Fertility and
Sustainability
A common theme that has run throughout this
journal is the nutrient rich, fertile soil of Bali.
The volcanic history that has taken place in
order to create the Island of Gods has bestowed
the Balinese with agricultural abundance.
Maukami
21
International visitors and influence
has been rapidly increasing in Bali
over the last decade. The stunning
beaches, crystal clear waters, Jurassiclike
wilderness and mountains have
become more and more the ideal holiday
destination for people traveling from all
over the globe.
In the last two years, Bali has suffered
particularly hard due to the effects of the
corona virus on international travel. I
say this because Bali relies a lot more on
the tourism industry than most of the
rest of Indonesia. Therefore, it is more
important now than ever, as Bali recovers
from its recent hardships and continues
to expand its tourism industry, in order
to preserve and maintain the essence of
Balinese culture, to secure economic
independence for the local people, and
ensure environmental sustainability of
their lands.
Of course, there are many different ways in
which this can be done. What I am going
to talk about now is how these issues can
be tackled and how these aims can be
acquired, through organizations aimed at
education and development of sustainable
agriculture.
