Turtles in Bali
In Asia, turtles have long been revered
as symbols of strength, wisdom, and
good luck. These gentle creatures
can live for decades, and their unique
appearance has inspired a vast number
of stories and legends. Sadly, turtles are
in danger of becoming extinct due to the
illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss, and
pollution.
Traditional History
Bali is world-renowned for its beautiful
beaches and vibrant culture, along
with a variety of spectacular wildlife,
including the sea turtle. Starring in
traditional legends, symbolism, and
used in ceremonies, the sea turtle plays
a significant role in the core beliefs of
Balinese Hindus.
In Bali, the turtle symbolises wisdom and
longevity. For centuries, Balinese culture
has been steeped in legend and mythology.
The turtle plays an important role in these
many different stories. In one particular
legend, the island of Bali was created when
two great turtles emerged from the sea
and supported the island on their backs.
In another famous tale, a turtle used their
shell to protect a jewel which had fallen
from the gods, and thus the island was
gifted by the gods as recognition for the
selflessness of the turtle.
It is also popularly told in legends that
Bali rests on the shell of a giant turtle
named Bedawang Nala, (translates to
mythical giant turtle). This giant turtle
is said to represent the balance between
good and evil. The good is depicted by
