Prehistory
R. Marcolin, V. Manuzzato, G. Meneguzzo
70 x 48 cm (27.5” x 19”)
200 pieces + 3D model
Discover the human history with a journey that starts two
million years ago. Explore the Stone Age and the evolution of
the mankind, from the earliest hominids until homo-sapiens,
and see the animals that populated Earth during that time,
such as the great mammoths and the saber-toothed tigers.
Learn this chapter of history explained in a simple and fun
way, recreating the evolutionary stages of humans with a
handy 3D model and a colorful puzzle to build.
THE PALAEOLITHIC
FROM THE APES TO THE FIRST HUMANS
The Palaeolithic, whose name derives from the Greek palaiós
(old) and líthos (stone), is the first stage of Prehistory. It began
about 2 million years ago and ended 10,000 years ago.
The humans who populate Earth today
belong to the species Homo sapiens.
We are the result of the slow evolution
of hominins, or the first humans who,
according to scholars, date to more
than 4 million years ago.
The term Palaeolithic,
therefore, means ‘old
stone era’, a time in which
humans learned to work
with stone to create the
first tools.
The hominins belong to
the order of primates, the
same order as monkeys, in
particular a group of apes,
similar to humans, like the
chimpanzee, gorilla and
orangutan.
Box with iridescent details
There are still conflicting opinions on the origin of the human
species. There are many findings, especially in Africa, but we do not
know how hominins appeared in the family of primates. In Africa,
we know that between 4 and 5 million years ago, there lived some
species of hominins, called Australopithecus, who were different
from monkeys because of their erect posture and bipedal gait.

LIFE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN
GREEN TURTLE
A green turtle can be 125 centimetres
(49 inches) long and weigh up to 230
kilograms (507 pounds)! Each year,
groups of thousands of these turtles
migrate as much as 2,000 kilometres
(1,240 miles) to move from the areas
where they feed to those where they
mate and lay their eggs.
SPECTACLED PORPOISE
This type of porpoise is easy to recognise because it has rings
around its eyes. It has a black back with a large round fin and a
white belly. Spectacled porpoises eat squid and fish, and they live
in herds of up to twenty-five.
This porpoise is a very fast swimmer!

CHAGOS ISLANDS
The Chagos Islands are the world’s largest natural marine reserve and
a treasure trove of marine biodiversity. They include the largest coral
atoll in the world, a diverse array of trenches and ridges and an amazing
variety of corals, fish, turtles, crustaceans and marine animals. Pufferfish
are one of the many species represented, and they swim through some
of the deepest water.

Extraordinary Inventions
Many of Leonardo’s inventions were born out of his great ability to observe reality and to imagine
solutions to everyday practical problems. Some of Leonardo’s works of genius came to light
because of particular events during his life.
Great Floods
The Arno River flows through Florence, which
at one time when it was full brought floods and
destruction. So Leonardo began to imagine works
Revolving Bridge
and machines to protect people from floods. He
designed special boats to dredge the riverbed,
methods to make the banks sturdier, machines to
dig canals and even revolving bridges!
Leonardo and the War Machines
Notwithstanding Leonardo’s very many inventions, the rulers at that time contended
for his genius, especially for his ability to invent powerful war machines and effective
defence systems. During the Renaissance, in fact, many kingdoms were involved in
conflicts and had recently been introduced to firearms. It was very important, therefore,
to have machines that could cope with these new, deadly instruments!
Many Wars on the Horizon
In Leonardo’s time, Italy was divided into many different ‘States’, called duchies, seigniories and principalities, depending
on who ruled them. Each of these powerful rulers wanted to expand their territory and become ever more important. In
short, war was the order of the day! In this context, Leonardo’s intelligence was in high demand to build new and up-todate
war machines.
Mechanical Music
and Drummers
In Leonardo’s time there were many wars. In the
battlefields were ‘drummers’, boys equipped with a drum
who beat the instrument to the rhythm of the battle.
Unarmed and unprotected, these boys were often among
the first victims!
To avoid this unnecessary massacre, Leonardo devised
an automatic drum that advanced on wheels connected
to a roller on which the music was recorded, so the
drummer moving it could protect himself! Leonardo was
able to reuse this machine even in peacetime, removing
the wheel and replacing it with a crank. So during court
festivities the sound of automated music could be
heard... like that of a turntable!
Construction Crane
Dangerous Work Sites
Pile Driver
When Leonardo arrived at Verrocchio’s workshop in
Florence, architects and artists were holding their
breath in suspense because of an unbelievable
undertaking: the construction of Brunelleschi’s dome,
which you can still see in the city today! The workshop
was right next to the building site: what luck for
Leonardo to be able to observe up close the work and
machines for building the dome!
Although, working on the work site was tiring and
dangerous: many accidents occurred and often to
workers who were little more than children. Leonardo
studied the machines used on the site and began to
design them to be safer, alleviating the manual work.
Thanks to his innovations, many lives could be saved.
War, ‘Most Bestial Madness’
Despite his ability to create war machines, Leonardo detested
war, calling it the ‘most bestial madness’. His interest in arms was
therefore not military but rather pure technological curiosity! It
is no coincidence that Leonardo decided not to divulge or adopt
many of his military innovations.
An Innovation Too Powerful
One of his inventions was the ‘rapid-fire crossbow’. Loading the
crossbow, a major weapon in these times, was burdensome and
time-consuming. Leonardo invented an ‘automatic load’, which
allowed the crossbow to launch arrows in repetition. Leonardo
knew the crossbow would become a powerful weapon and chose
not to make known this dangerous invention.
The Submersible
On a codex sheet dedicated to military action against an enemy fleet, there is
a design for an underwater suit. Leonardo devised it as a kind of incursion to
sabotage the hulls of ships and sink them.
He also designed the first submersible that, hidden beneath the hull of a small
ship, could approach the enemy fleet undisturbed. Leonardo himself was
horrified by the destructive potential of this machine and decided not to make
this invention known to the public.

The Little
Prince
Illustrator
Susy Zanella
A distant asteroid, infested with baobabs and inhabited by a haughty
rose. A child with hair the colour of wheat. A pilot lost in the desert.
Few great classics are able to inspire such powerful fascination
as The Little Prince: a new edition embellished with enchanting
illustrations and a cover that brings this eternal story to the present
day, dedicated to those seeking happiness in the little things.
A book with a new look, elegant illustrations and an exquisite
presentation.
His first stop was an asteroid-planet ruled by a king. Adorned in
purple and with an ermine robe that covered the entire planet, he
sat puffed up upon a throne.
With iridescent details
‘Here is a subject’, he began to declare.
‘May I sit down?’ the Little Prince asked.
‘I order you to sit down!’ the king thundered. He demanded
obedience, but he was good, so he ordered the obvious and the
reasonable.
On this asteroid, however, there was no one else besides the king.
‘Sire, what do you reign over?’ asked the Little Prince.
‘Over all things’, the monarch replied, ‘Over the universe, the other
planets, everything.’
‘Can you order the sun to set?’ the child asked.
‘It would be like asking a person to fly like a butterfly. We must
demand from each only what each can give’, the king declared,
‘That is why everything obeys me.’
Surprised by the strangeness of grown-ups, the Little Prince
resumed his journey.

While the Lost Children embraced their new mother, on the
other side of the island a pirate crew was crafting evil plans. The
pirates, in fact, hated children, and the two sides were always at
war with each other.
The captain of the crew was James Hook, a man of refined
bearing but a menacing gaze. Pale, with long black curls and
terrifying ice-cold eyes, Hook got his name from the iron claw
that replaced his right hand.
‘I want to capture Peter Pan and cut him into little pieces’, Hook
would say, filled with anger, ‘He was the one who cut off my
hand and threw it to a crocodile.’
‘Are you afraid of crocodiles?’ asked Smee, his faithful helper.
‘Only of that monster that took my hand. Fortunately, he also ate
a clock. So, when I hear the ticking, I know my enemy is near’,
the captain explained, ‘Peter Pan must pay for what he did.’
On the pirates’ trail, however, there was no Peter Pan that day.
And not a crocodile in sight.

Little Red Riding Hood
E. Tomè, N. Fabris
Read a great classic of children’s stories
in an innovative format. This 32-page
book with beautiful laser illustrations
lets readers enjoy the fairy tale in a
whole new way!
Once upon a time,
in a distant land, there was
a sweet and lovely little girl
who lived with her mother in a
white cottage near the woods.
She always wore a beautiful red cape
that her mother had sewn for her, and
for this reason everyone throughout the
land called her Little Red Riding Hood.
The eyes belonged to a clever, black wolf, who, curious, had been following Little Red Riding Hood for a while.
The wolf greeted the girl with a gruff voice and asked, ‘Little girl, where are you going all alone in the woods?’
At that moment, Little Red Riding Hood forgot her mother’s warning and politely replied, ‘I’m going to visit my
grandmother, who lives alone beyond the woods and is sick in bed’. The wolf thought the little girl would make a
tasty treat, and he also thought he could eat the grandmother, too! So, the clever wolf proposed a race to the
cottage to make the journey more fun: ‘Let’s see which one of us arrives first at grandmother’s house!’

Alice in Wonderland
I. Trevisan, N. Fabris
Discover one of the most beautiful
fairy tales of the East within the finely
die‐cut pages of this book and let
yourself be carried away by its magic.
Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Alice. In the
summer afternoons, Alice spent long hours reading aloud with
her sister in the garden. One day, she was bored and about to
fall asleep when, suddenly, she saw a curious white rabbit running
breathlessly towards her.
‘Poor me, how late it is!
I am so very late!’
repeated the rabbit to himself,
looking nervously at his watch.
The little rabbit, hurrying about in his waistcoat,
rushed to the entrance of a deep den. Alice was curious
and decided to follow him.
‘This den is quite strange’, Alice murmured as she stepped into
the darkness. Suddenly, a hole opened in front of her and the
little girl tumbled down. She fell gently, slowed by her fluffy
skirt. Arriving at the
bottom of the hole,
Alice found herself
in a room full of tiny
doors. Through a
keyhole Alice saw
a beautiful garden.
Unfortunately,
however, the door
was locked.
Determined to open the
door, Alice looked around
and found a bottle labelled
with a note. Written on the
note were the words: ‘Drink me’.
The invitation was clear. The
little girl tasted the contents.

Iris hated using her fork to eat, sitting up straight, wiping her mouth
with her napkin, tidying up her toys and putting on her pajamas to

up in the black sky, she was forced to get under the covers. On
Christmas night, however, Iris discovers a monster under her bed...
and realizes she is not the only one who always wants to do things
“upside down”!
A Christmas story dedicated to the beauty of thinking for yourself
and accepting someone else’s point of view even when it is different
from your own.
That evening, however, Iris had sat up straight
at the table with a napkin on her lap, she had used
her fork to eat and was now ready in her pyjamas
after having tidied up her toys, all set for bed.
She got into bed and turned off the light without a word.
This was because she could not wait for the morning
to arrive: Christmas morning.
Iris did not turn on the light for fear
that the monster would disappear,
just as many dreams do in the morning light.
The little monster was sleeping and he didn't seem
to want to wake, despite Iris’s gentle taps and pinches.
Suddenly he opened his eyes as if it were daylight
and he smiled and said:
‘Hi, I’m Milo!’
Mum, as always,

the monster was

It was just

Little Otter
gives up the Dummy
C. Gobbetti, D. Nikolova
Little otter’s dummy is missing! Or maybe someone took it.
Little otter sets out to investigate. Where could the dummy be?
This rhyming story uses sweet characters to show children that
life without a dummy is perfectly fine—and maybe better.
This illustrated book gently and playfully guides children as
they transition toward independence.
Little otter began to search,
but the dummy
wasn’t on its perch.
The dog huffed.
Its chest was puffed.
‘Do you see me? I’m big and strong.
I go without a dummy all day long’.
Little otter considered
that a dummy so cool
might be taken by a
DOG that drooled.
One morning little otter rose,
waking from a heavy doze
to find the DUMMY wasn’t in its place.
It had disappeared without a trace.
Little otter always wanted it near,
whether out of joy or out of fear.
Happy or sad you could bet
without the dummy little otter
was upset.
WHERE?
Little otter went to ask the FROGS,
who hopped and splashed
in their bog.
The frogs responded with surprise
and looked at him with bulging eyes.
‘Little otter ’, the frogs croaked,
‘why are you here? Want to soak?’
‘I haven’t seen my DUMMY, have you?
Might it be here amidst the bamboo?’
The frogs swiftly heeded little otter
and searched the stones and in the water.

Little Otter
cleans up
C. Gobbetti, D. Nikolova
Little otter never washes. Who ever heard of an otter who won’t
go near water? Little otter needs to learn that the bathroom is
fun. This sweet rhyming story uses surprising twists to teach
children the basics of good hygiene and the importance of
keeping clean.
This illustrated book gently and playfully guides children as
they transition toward independence.
‘You’re quite dirty, little otter.
Shall we fill the tub with water?
My little sweetheart, do the math.
I think it’s time to run a BATH.’
SOAP
Mum asked, ‘What can that smell be?’
and placed paw over nose daintily.
Covered in mud from head to toe,
little otter said, ‘I don’t know.’
NOTHING
CLEANS BETTER!
‘A BATH I simply do not need.’
Little otter ran off at top speed.
Down the hall and out the door
before mother otter could say more.
As little otter passed right by,
someone said, ‘You need a wash and dry.’
The speaker was a young DONKEY,
relaxing in the shade of a tree.
‘I don’t want a wash and dry.
Who likes to be wet? Not I!’
Little otter paid the donkey no mind,
and left, trailing a stench behind.

and a New Baby
C. Gobbetti, D. Nikolova
Little otter has been always been the focus of mother’s
attention. But that’s all set to change with the arrival of a
new baby. Little otter wants mother to forget about the new
sibling and bring someone else home instead. This imaginative
rhyming story helps prepare children for the arrival of a baby
sister or brother.
This illustrated book gently and playfully guides children as
they transition toward independence.
‘Little otter, I’ve got a surprise’,
said otter’s mother with joy in her eyes.
‘I like surprises. You know I do! Little otter stuck a finger in the air.
Where will I find this gift from you?’
Little otter gave a scratch of the head,
‘What’s a surprise doing there?’
‘It’s right here, in my TUMMY!’ trying to make sense of what she’d said.
SURPRISE!
cried little otter’s happy mummy.
‘I don’t want a baby, of course.
I’d rather have a ROCKING HORSE!
‘I want a horse I can ride a lot,
not some baby that can’t even trot.’
Little otter looked to and fro,
then waved a paw to say NO.
‘It may seem strange,
but it’s true.
There’s a special gift for you’,
said little otter’s papa proudly,
and then he continued loudly.
‘Little otter, wait until you hear,

C. Ravizza, S. Covelli
Whale always felt very lonely. Because of her size, it seemed to her
that everyone was afraid of her. Yet she felt she had a heart as big
as her gigantic tail... Discouraged, she swam away from everyone,
crying. Her tears, however, illuminated the ocean depths with an
enchanting rainbow, and fish began to dart in her wake. From that
moment, Whale continued to offer her colourful tears to the ocean,
though now they were tears of joy.

Fishing for Words

Fishing for
Words
Chiara Sorrentino
Illustrated by Martina Rotondo
Docked on a pier up in the sky is a ship that each night lifts its
anchor and sets sail. On board the ship is a family of fishers. No one
knows their names: everyone calls them the word fishers. They fish
the skies all around the world, looking for words that are stuck in
mid-air, wating to be written or spoken again. From their ship they
cast nets woven of stars that light the darkness and capture the
things said and the things left unsaid during the day.
FISHING FOR WORDS
A sweet story dedicated to the power of words.
On the Milky Way, one hundred wing beats from the North Star
and one thousand waltz turns from the moon, there’s a pier
that floats on the clouds.
It rests on dandelion seeds blown by children making wishes.
Docked on that pier up there in the sky is a ship
that each night lifts its anchor and sets sail.
On board the ship is a family of fishers: mother,
father, and their son. No one knows their names.
Up there amidst the clouds, a place only those with wings
can reach, everyone calls them the word fishers.
LOVE
Dawn is breaking, and it’s becoming more difficult to see the words.
They turn as transparent as air. The fishers yawn and squint their
eyes. They know that soon they’ll have to return to the dock to rest.

‘We’ll get it next time’, their son says. ‘Look what I caught!’
And he shows them his bottles full of words.
His parents look them over. They shake them gently,
and then they turn to him and smile.
‘Good job, son. You’ve outdone us.’
The word fishers fish the skies all around the world,
looking for words that are stuck in mid-air,
waiting to be written or spoken again.
From their ship they cast nets
woven of stars that light the
darkness and capture the things
said and the things left unsaid
during the day.
But while the son is smiling with satisfaction
over his catch, his parents look sad.
‘We lost it’, they sigh.
Just then, as the ship docks and the sun climbs above the
horizon, the large firefly word lands on the prow of the ship.
The letters have almost completely faded now, but they can
just be made out in the morning haze.
When they bring the nets back up
to the surface, they see wriggling
inside them words of all kinds
and all shapes.

LOLA
and the purple cloud
Chiara Sorrentino
Francesca Galmozzi
One morning the teacher asked Lola:
‘What is eight times nine?’
‘Seventy-two’, thought Lola, but that very
same tangle formed again in her head.
‘What if I’m wrong?’
The purple cloud reappeared.
Lola tried to shake it away, but the cloud
didn’t budge, and hammered at her temples.
Small drops began to fall on Lola’s cheeks.
It was the purple cloud’s rain.
‘The teacher is angry with me...’
But it wasn’t that at all. The teacher
approached Lola and encouraged her
to recite the eight times table.
With each sound that came from Lola’s mouth,
the cloud dwindled.

be sure the ball always remained perfectly round. Proud to
be so perfect and so loved, the ball of yarn decided to go out
and show itself to the world. It saw so many beautiful things
all around and ventured into beautiful new places! It was all
so different from the nice, safe straw basket with a silk lining
