One of Africa’s finest remaining wild places is considered the “heart” of elephant territory in the
Zambezi Valley of Zimbabwe. Mana Pools – remote, achingly beautiful and revered by almost
all who visit – is also the original home territory of a small but effective organisation called
Zambezi Elephant Fund (ZEF), whose conservation-support efforts have now grown outwards
and upwards, making an undeniable difference to the overall valley landscape over the past
seven years. Here, in this veritable paradise, the world’s largest land mammal roams free; and,
in the context of a world that sometimes seems set on self-destruction, the gentle presence of
elephants is a poignant reminder of how privileged we could all be to help protect these magnificent
creatures and their habitats for global good.
We stand up for elephants
Standing up for elephants, reaching as high as they do for their survival, is the simple but powerful
principle that propels Zambezi Elephant Fund’s (ZEF) efforts every day – and one that is
evident in the tremendous success this small organisation and its impact partners have
achieved.
06
JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
What began in 2015 as a response to an
unprecedented increase in elephant
poaching in the Zambezi Valley of
Zimbabwe has now evolved into
an all-encompassing mission to
protect and preserve not only
elephants but other wildlife
and their habitats, whilst
also supporting human
wildlife conflict issues and
the economic resilience of
local communities.
Ultimately, it is ZEF’s aim to
create a meaningful,
landscape-wide impact on
conservation and communities
in the Zambezi Valley of
Zimbabwe.
An innovative approach
ZAMBEZI ELEPHANT FUND
In step with the attributes of those that
first put the organisation together, ZEF
does everything possible to maintain a
characteristic of authentic conservation.
This trait continues to those organisations
who receive support from ZEF –
the impact partners in the landscape,
with whom a close relationship is maintained,
ensuring a strong culture of
safeguarding, operating standards,
efficiencies, ethics, and each of whom
share a far-reaching and common
vision for the future of elephants.

ZEF’s support over the years has come from all over
the world – dedicated lovers of elephants and the
wild, safari travellers who have felt inspired to help
protect what they have witnessed first-hand, family or
corporate funds whose own missions align with ZEF’s,
artists, whose work represents everything compelling
about the valley, and those who simply feel grateful
to do their bit and participate in the annual events
that have proved critical to keeping ever-important
awareness raised and support coming in.
These include the Saving The Elephants Run/Walk
(STER), an exciting event held in Central Park, New
York, which has benefited Zambezi Elephant Fund
since 2018 and attracts between 300 and 500 participants
every year. Then there’s the New York Marathon,
(with five charity places awarded to Zambezi
Elephant Fund), when the more tenacious runners
have gone all out in the last two years to raise critical
funding for elephants back in Africa. This year, five
runners will be participating in this prestigious event
on behalf of ZEF. ZEF has its own merchandise range,
featuring the work of Zimbabwean artists, Farai
Wallace, Jacqui Taylor, Keara Lee and Brigette
McNab.
Local Zimbabwean events have included art
auctions with the support of renowned artists Will
Maberly, David Filer and Brennan Seward, and the
Mukuvisi March for Elephants, a great family event
held each year in conjunction with STER.
Without the incredible support of its worldwide
network of friends, Zambezi Elephant Fund would not
be able to continue to uphold its vision: that the
Zambezi Valley, in its magnificent entirety, will always
be a safe environment where elephants and other
wildlife can thrive, for the benefit of Zimbabwe, its
people and global biodiversity.

MAMA KAFTANS
our story
Mama kaftans is named after my late grandmother
Jubeda Smith, affectionately known as
“Mama” or “Aunty Juby,” for two reasons. One
being, that I named it Mama in honour of her,
during her battle with breast cancer, as a way of
showing her that I will continue on her legacy in all
that I do, and that is why our in house standard
colour is pink, which is commonly known as a
colour that represents breast cancer.
Second reason being that the design of the
kaftans are made with the mixture of two of my
grandmothers heritages in mind; African Malawian
and Indian cultures which
both incorporate the
kaftan in their traditional
wear. Mama kaftans
standard design was created
as a half African and
Indian kaftan in honour of
My Mama’s heritage.
At the top of the brand
name, their is a lavender
leaf logo, which was also
purposefully chosen in
honour of my grandmother,
who infamously
used Lavender oil to solve
a lot of our injuries as
children (A very effective
medicine, if i may say so
myself) And lastly, in
regards to our brand
colour, I infused a lavender
tone and a pink tone to
create the brand colour
that exists today.
So as we can now see,
everything surrounding the
brand name, colour, logo
and design of the kaftan all
has to do with my grandmother,
Mama Smith.
our products
We have four different types of kaftans: (1) Regular
kaftan that is available year round, (we are able to
make this kaftan with long sleeves too) (2) Karim
(Karim is my grandmothers maiden name) Kaftan
which is very similar to a t-shirt dress and is also
available year round. We have two seasonal
kaftans, (3) one linen kaftan that is only available
during the summer/warmer months of September-
April, and (4) one very luxurious cashmere long
sleeve kaftan that is available during winter months
May-August. As of 2023, we have just introduced
SILK kaftans, and they will be available year round
as well for a more formal look.
We take our orders in
person and request that
our customers contact us
via our Instagram and our
WhatsApp for an appointment
at our workshop.
We carry some stock in our
workshop which is located
at 28 Drew Road, Chisipite,
Harare, however, we
usually allow our customers
to come in by appointment,
select fabrics/colours
available in our workshop,
and allow our
customers to come in and
choose the fabric and
colour they would like. This
allows for us to also ensure
that we meet your specific
body measurements and
accommodate any
special requests in regards
to minor adjustments to the
kaftan.

“quality

- santana bruins

Something to note is, we are a very small business,
and keeping it small for me allows for it to keep the
authenticity of the brand in tact, and keep it exclusive.
So you wont see us nagging you on social
media every week to come in and buy our kaftans,
because we also believe that quality sells itself,
and going mass market can sometimes affect the
authenticity of the brand.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT
My name is Lexi Macmillan & I am a Certified Breast
feeding Counselor through Childbirth International. I
have a backround in health care, having started my
career as an administrative assistant at a Nursing
Agency, Nursing Personnel, in Perth 19 years ago.
18
JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
I loved working with the Nurses and it soon became
apparent that I wanted to leave my administrative
role and work more with the clients. I went back to
college at TAFE WA and did a Certificate in Community
Services, Certificate VI in Mental Health and
Certificate VI in working with people with Alcohol
and Drug Addictions. I was able to get a job working
in the community as a Mental Health Support
Worker, with Perth Homecare Services. I have a real
passion for mental health and wanted to learn as
much as I possibly could to help my clients. After 2
years, I left Nursing Personnel and enrolled to do a
Bachelor of Nursing at Edith Cowan University.
I worked 2 jobs, as an Assistant Nurse at Freshwater
Bay Nursing Home and at Flex Health Services as an
Agency Assistant Nurse in the community. It was
hard work and often worked night duty which made
studying tricky at times, but it was all absolutely
worth it when I graduated. I was able to get a full

time contract, as a Registered Nurse at Fremantle
Hospital and I did an undergraduate programme in
mental health whilst working there. After 4 years in
mental health and 11 years in the health industry in
Perth, I decided to move home to Zimbabwe to be
closer to family. I have since had a family of my own
and worked at 2 local preschools, looking after
babies and toddlers, which was a very unexpected,
but wonderful change.
Through this work, I realised how tough parenthood
can be in the beginning, for so many of the families
I worked with. One of the biggest challenges a new
mum can face, can happen almost instantly after
birth, and it is breastfeeding. It does not happen
"naturally" the way most of us expect it to. This can
make a mother feel helpless and like a failure and
can contribute to or even cause postnatal depression.
What alot of women don't realise, is this is in fact
an extremely common problem, that with a little bit
of professional guidance and support can often be
overcome.
my own private practice in April 2021 and I have
loved every minute of this journey. I still have a way
to go to become a Board Certified Lactation
Consultant, but I am slowly getting there. In the
meantime, you can find me here in Harare, helping
as many breastfeeding mums as I possibly can,
whilst being a mum to my own beautiful children.
With time, perseverance and a good support
network, the sky really is the limit. I would not have
found my dream career without so many wonderful
people in my life. To all my teachers, friends,
colleagues, clients, patients, home helpers, family,
kids and my amazing husband, none of this would
have happened without you, thank you.
To all the families expecting a little one, or new
mums struggling with breastfeeding, please don't
suffer alone. Reach out.

Whilst working with the babies, I started to do my
research on what services were lacking in my area
to assist new mums and their families. Breastfeeding
was top of my list. We only had one breastfeeding
specialist in the whole of Zimbabwe at the time, who
is wonderful by the way and is definitely our breastfeeding
guru here in Harare. It wasn't a difficult decision
for me, I decided to study again and qualified
as a Certified Breastfeeding Counsellor. I opened

JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
What can I do
dazzled?
• Speak to your optician. Eight percent of
respondents to the Drive Zim survey said they’d
talked to their optician about glare. For those who
wear glasses, a special coating can be added that
can go cut down on glare. Around a fifth (22%) of
drivers said they wear such glasses now.
• Make sure you adjust your rear-view mirror. While
some cars have self-dimming rear-view mirrors or
tinted rear windows, most require you to manually
adjust the mirror in the dark. Doing so can cut down
on glare, and it’s something most drivers who get
dazzled (57%) said they do at night.
• Think about glare when you change your car.
While you’re perhaps more likely to want to get a car
with modern headlight technology if you want to cut
down on the dazzling effect of cars behind you then
look for one with a self-dimming rear-view mirror and
even darkened glass (sometimes called ‘sunset
glass’) when you change your car. Both can be
effective at reducing the bright light that reaches
you.
Am I causing
other drivers to
be dazzled?
It can be extremely difficult to know whether you’re
causing discomfort to other drivers from your car’s
headlights, and the only way you might know is if you
see them flashing at you. But if you suspect a problem
with yours, you won’t be alone – around one-in-five
drivers (18%) said they’d thought their headlights
might be dazzling others.
Check your car’s manual to find out how to adjust
the angle of your headlights, depending on the load
you are carrying. Even just having all the passenger
seats occupied may mean you need to manually
adjust the beam, and there’s likely to be a switch
close to the dashboard. If you don’t, you could be
causing other people problems.

DRIVE ZIM
How to stay safe on the
road. Useful tips...
• "Night driving glasses are a real boon for me. They
reduce the glare tremendously and I also wear them
for playing golf in the winter." You could also speak to
your optician about spectacles with an anti-dazzle
coating.
• "Make sure your glasses and windscreen are clean.
A clean windscreen isn't just about squirting the
outside with jets, it's about the inside, too. Particularly
in the colder months, a residue can form from
condensation; not just the visible misting up on a
damp day that you clear with the heater but
something that can only be shifted with clean
chamois leather or pad, or a microfibre cloth. This can
contribute to veiling flare.
• "Avoid touching the inside of your windscreen with
bare hands too; skin grease is easily transferred and
makes matters even worse. "Finally on older or higher
mileage cars even the smallest chip or abrasion built
up over years can cause star effects. Consider a new
windscreen if it's really bad."
Are brighter
lights solely to
blame?
The fact that we’re an ageing population isn’t
helping. “Between the ages of 15 and 65, the time it
takes to recover from glare increases from one to
nine seconds. “As we grow older, our eyes become
less able to react quickly to changes in light and we
can have difficulty with colours and contrasts in poor
light.”
Meanwhile, DZRA believes vehicle size is also a factor.
“Back when we all had halogen lights, there wasn’t a
huge variation in the heights of vehicles. You’d be
driving along in your Golf and virtually every other car
would be riding at the same height. Now the higher
mounted lights of increasingly popular SUVs will cause
more glare for drivers in lower cars.”

wilderness of Zimbabwe. Plans to enter
the world of biology were superseded by
the decision to pursue an artistic career!
After gaining a Fine Art Diploma at
Durban Art College in 1980, I worked as a

the Far East. In 1991, I returned to Zimbabwe
and became a full-time fine artist.
I believe that the essence of a subject
should be captured by direct observation,
which can only then become meaningful
abstraction.
All things are connected in the bigger

ART
Working towards the exhibition this you, I have collaborated
with Johnson Zuze and Kelli Barker. Fire is one of
our themes. I have always been fascinated by fire, its
terrible beauty; its dual nature; destructive and
creative at the same time…
Under pressure, we proffer Burnt Offerings; we Re-Invent
ourselves and the world around us; we Take Flight.
The Fire story of the Mahenye Clan in South East Zimbabwe
is one close to my heart, in which they, who
possessed no fire, were able to harness the power of
fire by carrying burning embers back from a neighbouring
clan’s hearth, in a giant African land snail shell.
Our exhibition is titled: “Burnt Offerings, Re-invention,
Taking Flight….”
Lin Barrie (fine artist), Johnson Zuze (wire and found
objects artist) and Kelli Barker (make-up, film and body
artist) present a collaboration - a collection of paintings
and installations, found objects art, body art, and
an art film, incorporating body painting, dance,
fashion, music, with a floral installation by guest artist
Neels Scott.
The venue will be Pikicha Gallery, at Helensvale Shopping
Centre, Harare.
The exhibition will be curated by Kuda Chakwaz.
Public opening:
Friday 2nd June 2023
Introduction by Kuda Charwaz, Curator.
Opening by Hope Masike, Musician.
This is an exhibition celebrating the ability within all of
us to rise above the physical and metaphorical fires

humanity, to renew nature.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My interest in found objects was sparked after the
burning down of my parents house in 2009. I went
through the rubble to express myself in that time of
desolation.
I created a work called "The Beautiful Struggle", which
earned me an award at the Delta Gallery “Unity”
Exhibition. This work was sold to Lin Barrie's daughter
Kelli Barker and within a short time they also experienced
a house fire and
the Beautiful Struggle
was burnt. Lin brought it
back to me for restoration.
We then decided to
come up with this
collaborative exhibition
based upon our
common experience.

That's the basis for this
Burnt Offerings Exhibition:
Finding and
preserving the Beautiful
in the Hideous.
I create art using items
of urban junk that
collect from street
corners and land fills. I
give them new
existence and present
them with a lively
presence beyond their
primary use into poetic
dimension.
I learned how to handle
tools from my father
who used to make kitchen
and hardware products
using wire, like iron
stands, cup hooks etc.
My early works were
mainly made of wire.
"Burnt Offerings" indeed, this exhibition
reflects the cycle of loss, sacrifice and
continued perseverance and faith.
I am proud of these Zimbabwean
creatives whom I am honoured to work
with:
Johnson Zuze artist, calligrapher with wire
and found objects - a true visionary and
master.
Kelli Barker, body artist, poet and film

JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
The inaugural Savé Valley Conservancy (SVC) ‘wild’
MTB Challenge 2023, now rebranded to MTB EXPERI-
ENCE ‘Come ride with us’ for 2024 and beyond, was
successfully held from the 11th to the 14th of May
2023 - offering an unforgettable and unique experience
to riders, exposing them to the Savé Valley
Conservancy with its bio diverse ‘Big-5’ landscape
and breath-taking beauty.
This maiden event included regional and local
participants.
The venue for the event was the SVC’s member
ranch, Chishakwe, which offered a comfortable
and enjoyable venue from which to stage the
event, with the riders enjoying the hospitality and
variety offered by the various routes over a four-day
period.
The longest route was on the 1st day, which was a
challenging 54km in extent highlighted by the fact
that a large number of Giraffe decided to join the
cyclists and ran parallel to them in perfect timing for
a number of kilometers - a unique experience.
Safety of the riders was paramount and the SVC’s
Special Species Protection Unit (SSPU) kept a watchful
yet unobtrusive eye over proceedings with the
help of drone technology.
Entertainment after the days’ ride was provided on
two of the nights by two of the Conservancy’s
unique residents, namely: renowned filmmaker and
‘hyena man’ Kim Wolhuter, who shared his research
with regards to these fascinating and oft misunderstood
animals. Kim highlighted and dispelled the
myth that surrounds them in the indigenous Zimbabwe
culture and informed that after many years of
researching them and being fully accepted as a
member of their clans, he has established that these

DARIAN PALMER
honey.badger.fitness
Born and raised in Zimbabwe in the
prime year of 1995, Darian Palmer has
since climbed his way up the fitness
rope, attending the CrossFit Regionals/Fittest
in Cape Town (FiCT) twice
with a team and becoming one of
Harare’s most well known and highly
recommended Fitness and Personal
Trainers. We got to interview the Cross-
Fit King and asked him a few questions
to keep us motivated this winter.
Where do you get your
training workout
ideas? “I'm inspired by a lot of my
peers that I train with. I try to always
think about the stuff that’s hard and
program to train my weaknesses
(turns out I have a lot). Also my
coach Ryan Burt @tcb.coaching is
brilliant and is always finding ways to
make my training life difficult.”
What inspired you to
become a personal
trainer? ”Nothing quite brings a
smile to my face like helping people
along their fitness journeys.”
What is your favourite
workout / workouts?
“I'm a huge fan of any and all
Olympic Lifts! If it's lifting heavy I like
it!”
Where are some of
your workout spots?
“I train mostly out of CrossFit Kyma
and squeeze in a session or two a
week at Migym.”
What do you do
outside of training?
“Apart from eating a lot and taking
naps I also love any physical and
outdoorsy events like hiking, playing
any sports, and swimming. I also
dabble in gaming a bit.”
Do you have any
additional skills or
talents? “I am also a Swedish
and Sports Massage Therapist which
is really useful for my clients after I've
put them through their paces. I am
also a musician (but shhh that's for
close friends and family).”
What/Who is your
biggest motivator?
How do you stay
motivated? “My biggest
motivator growing up was my
Grandad. He was just the biggest
and strongest man that I knew and I
always wanted to be like him
growing up. I remember always trying
to chase his numbers in the gym and I
can solely thank him for getting my
fitness journey started. I stay
motivated by saying no to the
nagging little voice that tells me "I'm
tired" and "maybe it's okay to skip a
day." Discipline and friends that hold
me is what helps me most days.”
What advice do you
have for us this winter
“Just keep
moving and do the little things that
keep you motivated. The small
consistencies every day make the big
difference.”

SPORT
2023 LONDON
MARATHON
By Marc Pozzo
What an apt theme for issue 7 “ The Sky is the Limit”.
Having been and still an avid runner although age is
beginning to catch up on me, the interest in the big
road running races around the world interest me no
end. These athletes put so much work into their
training and when one sits and watches you kind of
sense the inner reward they actually feel as well.
A few weeks ago it was the 2023 London Marathon
where over 48,000 runners took part on a wet cloudy
day in London. The route has remained largely
unchanged since the inaugural race in 1981. It take the
runners out, of Greenwich Park, looping through
Greenwich before heading towards Rotherhithe en
route to Tower Bridge at halfway then passing some of
London’s famous landmarks before finishing on the
Mall opposite Buckingham Palace.
There was massive hype, as to who would win the
men’s and ladies title and anyone watching this years
race would agree it was the finest finish ever.
40
JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum smashed compatriot Eliud
Kipchoge's course record to win the men's London
Marathon in the second-fastest time ever. The
23-year-old was just 16 seconds outside Kipchoge's
world record, finishing in two hours one minute 25
seconds. Sifan Hassan also produced a remarkable
run to win the women's race. The Dutch Olympic track
champion, 30 a former refugee, who left Ethiopia for
the Netherlands as a 15 year old, suffered with a hip
injury but battled to win on her debut at the distance.
Kiptum knocked one minute and 12 seconds off
Kipchoge's previous course record to beat
second-placed compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor by
almost three minutes.
SPORT
Let’s start with the ladies first, Sifan Hassan who won
the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics in
2021 and had never won a marathon before this,
appeared out of the women's race after dropping back
early on with a hip problem, but somehow fought back.
Even the commentators suggested she should pull out
of the race, to avoid any further injuries. Hassan's
rollercoaster of a race looked all but over after she fell
off the leading group with just an hour gone. She just
continued losing ground and then she produced a
sprint finish like no other to win in two hours 18 minutes
33 seconds. After battling through the pain, Hassan's
track speed proved telling down the Mall, as she beat
Ethiopia's Alemu Megertu into second place, while
Kenya's previously unbeaten Olympic champion Peres
Jepchirchir was third. Speaking after the race she
said, "I had a problem with my hip, which made me
stop. But it started to feel a little bit better," "And then I
missed one of the drinks stations. I didn't practice that
part of the race because I have been fasting [during
Ramadan] and so that was quite difficult. But I needed
it. ”At 20km I knew that I could kick on because I didn't
feel that tired and I didn't care how I finished, I just
wanted to get there.” Incidentally Hassan's build-up
was also impacted by the holy month of Ramadan
which, as with others who follow the religion of Islam,
meant abstaining from eating or drinking during
daylight hours. That is not ideal preparation for a
marathon.
Kiptum produced the fastest marathon debut in
Valencia in December, where he finished in 2:01:53 -
the third-fastest time in history. He went faster still on
the streets of London, leaving a high-class field in his
wake, with Ethiopia's reigning world champion Tamirat
Tola in third, three minutes and 34 seconds behind.
Emile Cairess, 25, produced a superb run to finish as
the first British man home, taking sixth in 2:08:07 on his
marathon debut. It was the third-fastest marathon time
by a British man - behind Mo Farah and Steve Jones -
and the second fastest by a Briton in the London race.

ZANZIBAR
The allure of Zanzibar is timeless. White
sands and turquoise waters ring the
island, and African, Indian, Arabic
and Persian influences intertwine in
Stone Town to form a rich cultural
backdrop.
Zanzibar’s beaches are justifiably
famous. Fine white sands edge clear
turquoise waters, traditional Arabic
dhows sail into the dawn, silhouetted
against pastel-tinted skies.
Zanzibar Town is the island's main
settlement, and the historical old
Stone Town is its heart and soul. It's
also a wonderful spot to get immersed
in island rhythms.
MAURITIUS
You know that vivid picture you call
up in your mind’s eye when you imagine
an island holiday? You know, the
powdery sand, the azure waves, the
palm tree lazily blowing in a breeze?
You’re imagining Mauritius. No matter
which way you slice it, Mauritius is the
quintessential island destination and if
it’s tropical heat you want, this is the
place to get it.
Mauritius is also in the enviable
position of enjoying some of the best
island weather to be had around the
globe. Warm and pleasant
year-round, Mauritius' weather cools
down slightly around July and peaks
in February when summer is at its
apex. Luckily the ocean is always nice
and balmy, which means that you
can always hit the waves when the
mercury rises.

BUSINESS
Is your Thinking
Creating Problems
for you?
52
JULY - SEPT 2023 | ISSUE 7
Written by: Sally Palmer, High Performance
Trainer and Coach at Sabre Business World
With the continual uncertainty of the past few years,
many people have resorted to “short term thinking”
where they are thinking only about what they have
got to do today or this month to get through. You
may find that this happens to you in waves.
The danger with uncertainty is that, as business
leaders, we risk adopting a “survival mindset” which
focuses on fixing problems and implementing
solutions for today which in turn reduces our horizon
and limits long term sustainability.
The nature of the human mind is that it is
predominantly focused on survival where it’s
fundamental activity is to protect our basic human
needs at all costs and if we are not conscious of this,
we can easily fall into the short term thinking trap.
When our lives are plagued with impending short
term problems, it takes a lot of effort to be “Future
Focused” and create “Long Term Thinking”.
The way we think directly determines what we focus
on in our current reality and the actions that we take.
To ensure we continue to make progress in our lives
and businesses and to avoid stagnating, we must
always remember that next month, next year and
next decade are coming and we must bring the
future results we desire into our present thinking to
correctly influence our present actions.
“Think
long term,
execute
short term”
An easy way to identify how you are thinking is to
look at how you are planning your day.
If you are in the short term thinking mindset, you may
ask yourself…“What have I got to do today?”
With this mindset, you are at risk of implementing
short term solutions and from experience, short term
solutions always lead to long term problems as we
generally take the easier, faster, cheaper route to
get rid of a headache, rather than the correct, long
term, sustainable route.
To instigate long term thinking which generates long
term solutions, a better way to start your day is to ask
yourself the following questions:
1.Where do I want to be in 5 years time?
2.What do I need to do to get myself and my business
closer to that?
3.What do I need to change?
4.How can I fix this problem forever?
5.Then and only Then…. ask yourself… What do I
need to do today?
By giving your mind a long term thinking framework
from which to operate within, you broaden your
horizon, raise your thinking and free yourself from the
trap of focusing on the short term problems.
It is a common trait of successful people that they
spend at least 15 minutes planning their day so that
they become more intentional with their actions and
consciously create long term success.

A good exercise to do is to look at what you have on
your list today and value each of the tasks from $10
to $1million.
If you have lots of low value items on your to do list, it
is a sign that your horizon is shrinking.
Challenge yourself to take on the more difficult,
important but not urgent tasks that set growth into
motion and deliver long term results.
If the items on your list are hard, then you are in the
right zone – you are leading.
If they are easy, you are simply working and keeping
things going.
Delegate as much of your lower value tasks as
possible
Focus on the high value, high return actions.

in a room; they add colour and style while unifying a
space. Furthermore, rugs add a layer of insulation to
the floor, trapping cool air underneath and keep it
from seeping up and cooling the room. The warmth
of the rug will keep your feet toasty, too.
Lighting
The lighting in your home can also enhance the
ambience of your space. Table lamps and ceiling
lights are options, however when it comes to distinguishing
your space this cold season it’s all about
floor lamps. Tall, slender and elegant floor lamps in
different styles, deliver light at a height to create a
moody ambience.
Candles
In addition, candlelight is another seasonal staple
and wonderful lighting option. Perfect for creating a
restful atmosphere candles are a beautiful way to
give your home that winter glow. Place multiples
around your interior for maximum impact, scattering
a few thoughtfully chosen candles across bookcases,
mantelpieces, windowsills and tabletops. Use
scented candles to add an aroma of warmth and
comfort in your space.

Isn’t it beautiful?
To Make This Paper Plate Turtle Craft
You Will Need:
1. Paper plate turtle template
2. Tissue paper (cut into 1-inch squares)
3. White school glue
4. Wiggly eyes
5. Scissors
6. Green marker
7. Paper plates

11. Black marker
Paper Plate Turtle
Craft Directions
1. After gathering supplies,
spread glue over the bottom
of the paper plate with a
paintbrush.
3. If desired, sprinkle glitter over the
tissue paper squares while the glue
is still wet.
2. Cover the paper plate with
tissue paper squares. When
you get to the edge of the
plate, fold the tissue paper
underneath.
4. Cut out the free
turtle template on
the next page and
colour in.
5. Glue 2 wiggly
eyes to the turtle’s
head, then draw a
nose and mouth on
the turtle’s face with
the black marker.
6. Secure the turtle’s
head, legs, and tail
to the paper plate
with double-sided
tape.
And you’re done!
It’s the perfect craft
to pair with learning
all about turtles.

TERRIFIC
TURTLES
1. Turtles belong to one of the oldest reptile groups in
the world – beating snakes, crocodiles and alligators!
2. These creatures date back to the time of the dinosaurs,
over 200 million years ago – woah!
3. Turtles are easily recognised by their bony, cartilaginous
shell. This super-tough casing acts like a shield to
protect them from predators – some turtles can even
tuck their head up inside their shell for extra protection!
4. Just like your bones, a turtle’s shell is actually part of
its skeleton. It’s made up of over 50 bones which
include the turtle’s rib cage and spine.
5. What a turtle eats depends on the environment it
lives in. Land-dwelling turtles will munch on beetles,
fruit and grass, whereas sea dwellers will gobble everything
from algae to squid and jellyfish.
