What do I want to improve this year?

My favourite prayer:

I am the mum of...

Dear Catholic Mothers,

May this year be the year of true J0Y!

We often find that we are restlessly looking for happiness for

ourselves and constantly demanding it from the people around us,

only to realise that what we experience is fleeting, a temporary

feeling or in fact really hard to achieve due to circumstances and

life events!

May this year be different from every other year. May this be the

year in which fullness of joy finally lives in us! Not a passing

happiness but joy.

I wish you a year in which we discover that if our life, yes even

in its smallest actions, points towards God, we will truly own

perfect joy: in sadness, in stressful moments, in difficulties and

even in what sometimes appears to be the boring monotony of piles

of laundry, endless meals and work to help pay the bills. This

is our path to holiness.

Our Lady was filled with joy because Her life was lived for God,

Her life was lived in the will of God! Like the Mother of God

and with the help of the Mother of God may we be guided, hour

by hour, day by day, month by month, to the will of the Father,

in which is found fullness of life!

Pray for me, as I pray for you.

In Christ+

- GENESIS 3:20

The Mother of all Living, Eve

- GENESIS 3:20

The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.

Adam names Eve after the Fall. He does not name her “Temptress” or “Death-bringer”, but “Mother” and “life-giver.”

In the thought of the human authors of Scripture, a name was not just a title, but described the being and essence

of a person. The essence and heart of the feminine, no matter how broken or sinful she may be, is always Mother

and life-giver.

Eve finds her vocation after the Fall. She becomes Mother after both the first human sin and the first promise of

a Saviour (Gn. 3:15). In her motherhood she carries both of these realities. She passes Original Sin on to all of her

children, true, but her motherhood is also the means through which Jesus comes to save us. She is the Mother of All

the Living because God himself, the Life of all, will be born from one of her daughters. She is, therefore, the Mother

of Hope. All mothers pass on the sorrow of the human condition to their children, but more importantly, the hope

and promise of everlasting life.

Eve is the Mother of All the Living. Motherhood happens through nourishing an infant under the heart, feeding it

with one’s body and blood, and giving birth in pain, blood and labour. It is a kind of dying so others may live. Already

Eve points to the Cross and shares in the life-giving death of Jesus. The pains of every childbirth are sacred symbols

of life and love, revealing the Cross and Resurrection.

Spiritual

Challenge

Because names show the essence and

being of a person, the Name of Jesus is holy

and sacred. I will expunge all improper, profane,

or blasphemous use of His Name from my own

speech and that of my family. I will do this by:

bowing my head in love and adoration when his

Name is spoken in Mass; offering reparation

when His Name is profaned in my presence;

and doing a small penance, such as saying

a Hail Mary or giving some amount to

charity, if ever I use his Name in

any way other than in love,

in reverence and in

prayer.

“What do you

seek?”

When we have to do with

Jesus, the question is always

turned upside down: from

questioners, we become

questioned; “searchers”, we

discover that we are “sought”;

he, indeed, has always loved

us first (cf. 1 Jn 4:10).

This is the fundamental

dimension of the encounter:

we are not dealing with

something, but with

Someone, with the “Living

One”. Christians are not

the disciples of a system of

philosophy: they are men and

women who, in faith, have

experienced the encounter

with Christ (cf. 1 Jn 1:14).

Like the first disciples, follow

Jesus! Do not be afraid to

draw near to him, to cross the

threshold of his dwelling, to

speak with him face to face,

as you talk with a friend (cf.

Ex 33:1;). Do not be afraid of

the “new life” he is offering.

He himself makes it possible

for you to receive that life and

practice it, with the help of his

grace and the gift of his Spirit.

FOURTH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME

When we speak of the wife

obeying the husband, we normally

think of obedience in military

or political terms: the husband

giving orders, and the wife

obeying them. But while this type

of obedience may he appropriate

in the army, it is ridiculous in the

intimate relationship of marriage.

The obedient wife does not wait

for orders. Rather, she tries to

discern her husband’s needs and

feelings, and responds in love.

When she sees her husband is

weary, she encourages him to

rest; when she sees him agitated,

she soothes him; when he is ill,

she nurses and comforts him;

when he is happy and elated, she

shares his joy. Yet such obedience

should not be confined to the wife;

the husband should be obedient in

the same way. When she is weary,

he should relieve her of her work;

when she is sad, he should cherish

her, holding her gently in his arms;

when she is filled with good cheer,

he should also share her good

cheer. Thus a good marriage is not

a matter of one partner obeying

the other, but of both partners

obeying each other.

“Without confidence and love,

there can be no true education. If

you want to be loved…you must

love yourselves, and make

your children feel that

you love them.”

St John Bosco reminds us.

Remember that Christ loves

you immensely … He loved

you first and therefore YOU

can also love!

Find ways to show love to

your children with your

actions this week.

Tell them you love them every

night before going to bed this

week and from now on, if you

don’t do it already.

- GENESIS 30:22

The Mother of Joseph, Rachel

- GENESIS 30

God always hears our prayers, but his answer is sometimes hard for us to hear. At times when we pour out our

heart’s desires, God tells us “No” because what we asked for was not truly good. At other times, God tells us “Not

yet” and bids us wait for the right time to unfold. Rachel knew the challenge of waiting for God. Although she was

Jacob’s first love, Rachel was the last to marry him. Although she was the one whose son would save the Jewish

nation, for most of her life Rachel was childless. Although she would become the matriarch to many nations, Rachel

had to wait for eternity to see it. God blessed Rachel abundantly, but she had to wait for the blessing to unfold.

- Sr. Teresa Benedicta Block, OP,

SISTERS OF MARY, MOTHER OF THE EUCHARIST

Spiritual Challenge

Ask for the faith of Rachel when

God seems to bide his time.

Repeat the words of the Divine Mercy Chaplet

often this month, “Jesus, I trust in you.”

Although we may only read one page

at a time, trust in the good God

who writes the whole story our lives.

He works all things for the good

of those who love him

SOMETIMES THE ONLY WAY THE GOOD LORD CAN GET INTO SOME HEARTS

IS TO BREAK THEM.

- Archbishop Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

Saturday

Sunday

01 02 03

God has created me to do Him

some definite service. He has

committed some work to me

which He has not committed

to another. I have my mission.

I may never know it in this life,

but I shall be told it in the next.

I am a link in a chain, a bond of

connection between persons.

He has not created me for

naught. I shall do good; I shall

do His work. I shall be an angel

of peace, a preacher of truth

in my own place, while not

intending it if I do but keep His

commandments.

Therefore, I will trust Him.

Whatever I am, I can never be

thrown away. If I am in sickness,

my sickness may serve Him, in

perplexity, my perplexity may

serve Him. If I am in sorrow,

my sorrow may serve Him. He

does nothing in vain. He knows

what He is about. He may take

away my friends. He may throw

me among strangers. He may

make me feel desolate, make my

spirits sink, hide my future from

me. Still, He knows what He is

about.

The Two Mothers of Moses

- EXODUS

Pharaoh’s edict required the slaughter of all Hebrew baby boys. Jochabed put baby Moses in a basket boat and sent

him down the Nile, trusting in God to give her boy a chance at life. In surrendering Moses to God, she still lost her son:

he was adopted by another. But what mercy! Her trust in God’s love for her boy was rewarded with Moses’ life being

spared (and in turn, the Hebrew race).

When Pharaoh’s daughter came upon the basket and saw the baby, she at once understood: This was a

condemned Hebrew child. She probably suspected that the girl watching nearby was the baby’s sister, and the

proposed nurse was the boy’s mother. Yet her mother’s heart was filled with compassion and she willingly took

Moses under her protection and into her family. Her adoption resulted in Moses being able to save his people.

Ember Days

Ember Days, also known as the “fasts of

the four seasons” are three days of prayer,

fasting and abstinence kept within one

week and traditionally observed by

Catholics four times a year. They always

fall on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday

in each of the four seasons and were

traditionally associated with preparation

for the ordination of priests. Though they

are no longer mandated for Catholics

they are a wonderful opportunity to

pray for vocations for those training for

the priesthood and for the priests who

minister to us.

A Mother - in - Law and Daughter - in - Law

faith - filled relationship

Noami and Ruth

- RUTH 1

The book of Ruth is a wonderful story of love and faithfulness rewarded. The widow Naomi marries her two sons to

Orpah and Ruth. These women are gentiles from Moab but willingly take on the faith of their new family. When their

husbands die young leaving them childless, Naomi resigns herself to dying alone and sends her daughters in law

back to their parents. Orpah leaves but Ruth remains, proclaiming her fidelity to God and to Naomi: “Entreat me not

to leave you or to return from following you; for where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people

shall be my people, and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16) Naomi and Ruth return from Moab to Bethlehem and her

fidelity is repaid as Ruth meets and marries Boaz and she goes on to become the great grandmother of King David.

Sometimes God’s love is communicated to us through husbands, in-laws, friends and family but then he becomes

our own. As a gentile Ruth did not begin as one of God’s chosen people yet her fidelity to God was rewarded – once

she met God she gave herself to him fully and forever.

Spiritual

Challenge

Read the book of Ruth (it is very short) and

meditate upon the characters of Ruth and Naomi.

Think of all those who have brought you to faith –

pray for them.

Pray for all the converts you know, that they may

remain faithful to the calling they received.

Ask God for the faithfulness of Ruth as a

daughter-in-law and the wisdom of

Naomi as a mother-in-law.

Prayer to St Gianna

O God our Father, we praise you

and bless you because in St Gianna

Beretta Molla, you have given to

us a woman who witnessed to the

Gospel, as a young person, a wife,

a mother and a doctor.

We thank you because through the

gift of her life, we learn to accept

and honour every human being.

You, Lord Jesus, were for her a

privileged reference. She was able to

know you in the beauty of nature.

As she questioned her choice of life,

she always sought you and

how to serve you best.

Through her married love she

became a sign of your love for the

Church and for humanity.

Like you, the Good Samaritan,

she stopped at the side of every

sick person, small and weak.

Following your example,

she gave herself entirely out of love,

generating new life.

Holy Spirit, source of every

perfection, grant also to us wisdom,

intelligence and courage so that

through the example of St Gianna's

personal, family and professional

life, and through her intercession,

we too, are able to place ourselves

at the service of every person and

grow in love and holiness.

We ask this through Christ,

our Lord.

Amen

A Wise Mother

- PROVERBS 31: 25-30

The characteristics of the wise mother have been an inspiration to women through the ages. I found the following

verse written in my great-grandmother’s handwriting on a piece of paper in my mother’s cabinet.

“She looketh well to the way of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children arise up and call her blessed.”

In these verses, we are reminded that the work we do in our households can never be undervalued because the

effects of the work, however small or mundane they seem, or how often they are overlooked by the society we live

in, have lasting consequences for the future generations, and indeed heaven. In this work we must not be idle!

We are reminded of the characteristics we must aspire to in order to carry out the enormous duty of forming the

souls entrusted to us: “strength, dignity, wisdom, and teaching in kindness.” Indeed if we focus on these attributes

we will be able to “laugh at the times to come” for knowing that we have done our job to the best of our ability, we

can leave all the rest in God’s hands. It can be daunting to think of the world that our children will go into after they

leave our households but we must trust in God’s plan: they were built for these times and we were built to be their

mother and guide them; it is our path to sanctification.

Mary, mother of

the domestic church

May the Virgin Mary,

Mother of the Church, be also

mother of the domestic church.

Through her maternal help,

may every Christian family

truly become a little church

which reflects and relives the

mystery of the Church of Christ.

May you who are the servant

of the Lord, be our example

of a humble and generous welcome

of the will of God!

You who are the mother of sorrows

at the foot of the cross,

be there to lighten our loads,

and wipe away the tears of those

afflicted by family difficulties.

May Christ the Lord,

King of the Universe,

King of families,

be present, as at Cana,

in every Christian home,

to communicate his light, joy,

serenity and strength.

May every family generously

add its share to the coming

of his kingdom on earth.

To Christ and to you,

Mary, we entrust our families.

Amen.

Eve takes the fruit disobediently

from the tree of the knowledge

of good and evil. Mary stands

by another tree, the Cross,

which shows us good and evil:

we see the goodness of Jesus

and each wound on his body is

a consequence of our evil. But

Mary resists the temptation to

take the “fruit” from the tree

of the Cross; how much she

desired to take Jesus, fruit of

her womb, down from the Cross

to stop his suffering, yet she

obeyed God’s plan, waiting for

the Resurrection. At that very

moment when her mother’s

heart was fixed on her Son’s

agony, she was called to expand

her motherhood to others, to

John, and, in him, to all of us,

whose sins put her Son

in torment.

If Eve was mother of all the

Mother of the Church, Mother

of all those living supernatural

life through baptism. So close is

she now to Jesus in heaven, that

all his graces flow through her. If

Jesus is the head of the Church,

she is its “neck” as some saints

have said: all the graces of the

head pass through her!

In fact two of her titles, Tower

of David and Tower of Ivory, are

descriptions of the woman’s

neck in the Song of Songs.

Love and

Humility

We know nothing about the life

of the most holy family, but we

do know that Joseph, Mary, and

the child Jesus were glorifying

God by their very existence,

by their holiness, by their love.

Mary was no “intellectual”; she

was serving her husband and

the blessed fruit of her womb.

Any woman mediating upon this

undeniable fact will be given the

grace of understanding that the

most humble task, done with

love glorifies God infinitely more

than the most elaborate treatise

on theology.

Feminists look down upon

homely tasks as demeaning and

feel that such tasks are unworthy

of them. Mary teaches us that

love and humility are two facets

of the same jewel. What matters

is not so much what we do but

with how much love we do it.

Anyone who loves the Blessed

Virgin and wishes to imitate her

cannot possibly look down upon

house-work as demeaning: it

is meant to be a symphony of

love. Whether it is cooking or

washing, if it is done as a service

to God, it certainly glorifies

him much more than arrogant

“business” or intellectual work.

The Nursing Mother

and God’s greater compassion for his children

- ISAIAH 49:15

Reflection:

I didn’t feel completely overwhelmed by motherhood until I had my third baby. Driven to my knees in sleep deprived

desperation, I yelled at God. There is not enough of me. I can’t love them in the ways they need. Deep in my heart,

the answer resonated. Let me love you. Yes, this took on a practical bent, like asking for more help – actually allowing

people to help – and admitting I could not do it all. But even more than this, he was inviting me into a deeper

relationship with and reliance on him. My love for my children is deep and consuming and takes my breath away.

But his love for me? There are no words for it. And here is the lynch pin: If he loves me even more than I love my own

children, he will help me love them, with a far greater love than my own, even when I have nothing left to give. So,

at 5:30am, when the toddler bounded into my bedroom after a night of the infant cluster feeding and the five year

old creeping in at 3:00am to talk about her latest nightmare, even before I opened my eyes, I would do a spiritual

communion, and pray: I have nothing left to give. Love me with the love I cannot fathom, so that I can love them.

Somehow, no matter what, moment to moment, against all reasoning and my own natural abilities, I was sustained,

lifted up, and completely enabled to do exactly that.

Jesus’s Shoulder Wound

Our Lord did not reveal the

most painful part of his

passion until, after 1100 years,

he told St Bernard about his

Grandmother of Our Lord, Anne

The little we know about St Anne, mother of Mary, grandmother of Jesus, comes from pious tradition which tells

us that, after long years of infertility, she and her husband Joachim were granted the joy of answered prayers. Filled

with gratitude, Anne and Joachim placed their little daughter into service at the Temple of Jerusalem.

Based on this story and on how many of Jesus’s earthly relatives were steeped in Jewish observance, besides being

directly involved in his earthly ministry (for example, Elizabeth and her son John the Baptist; the cousins James,

Joseph, Simon, Jude and, of course, Mother Mary herself) one can infer with confidence that Mary’s parents were

also devout and God-fearing. Jesus’s family was bathed in the stories and customs, the worship and the hope of

generations. From that, they in turn transmitted their faith in a thousand ways – by keeping the rhythm of daily

prayer, annual fasts and celebrations, and performing delicate acts of charity with boundless generosity.

St Anne, hidden in the shadows of history, nurtured a fertile soil for Jesse’s Root. How do I tend the garden that has

been given to me?

TO GIVE, AND NOT TO COUNT THE COST, TO FIGHT, AND NOT TO HEED THE WOUNDS,

- St Ignatius of Loyola

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

02 03 04

From a homily for the feast of St Bonaventure:

“What I want is mercy, not sacrifice.” Perhaps it’s the age-old problem of dualism that

afflicts us, because the tendency is to read a statement such as this to mean that

God wants mercy, so we can forget about sacrifice or that it can be neglected; the

temptation is to dichotomise, and to emphasise one at the expense of the other, a

kind of dualism that divides rather than unites. However, this is not Jesus’s meaning.

This formulation of “I want A, not B” is a Hebraicism, a kind of Jewish idiomatic way of

saying that A is the goal, not B, but this doesn’t mean we can ignore B, rather it is the

means to attaining A. So, mercy is God’s desire and aim, and we achieve mercy through

sacrifice. Just think of the sacrifices we might have to make to be merciful to others –

we may have to give up our grudges and anger, sacrifice our cynicism, and give of our

time, energies, and material help to show mercy to others.

Above all, then, God shows his mercy towards us through the Holy Sacrifice of the

Mass; Jesus gives us the oblation of himself in the Mass, and so through this sacrifice

we receive the grace of God that heals us, converts us, draws us closer to God. This is

mercy: that we should turn from sin and become more like Christ our God.

Mother and teacher of life

- DEUTERONOMY 6: 6-7

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your

children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and

when you rise up.”

Proverbs 1:8

My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.

When you hear the word “teacher”, who first comes to your mind? Perhaps a beloved schoolteacher, or a

knowledgeable university lecturer. But another question may shift our perspective a little. Who taught you the most

important life lessons when you were growing up? The odds are that you will think of someone else. The deepest,

most important truths – that we are loved, that we were made by love and for love – are taught by being lived. In

God’s design, He has ordained that this should take place first and most especially in the home, through the loving

example of a child’s parents.

St Edith Stein wrote that “the woman’s soul is fashioned as a shelter in which other souls may unfold”, and this

“shelter” is the first place of learning. From the moment of becoming a mother, you implicitly teach your child what

it means to be loved and how to trust in that love, through the nurturing care that you give to them. This bond of

love and trust makes you the ideal guide for your child; you know your child in a way that no-one else can, and so

can speak to their heart in a unique way.

Mother of Kings,

mother of good counsel

- DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7

On the 19th September 1980 a pregnant mother was rushed to hospital with a severe haemorrhage, and was told by

the doctor that unfortunately her unborn baby was dead. Looking at a crucifix in the hospital room she asked God

to save her child and that if he did so she would consecrate that child to Him. At that same instant the child moved

in her womb. That day a baby boy was born.

That baby was me; the mother? She was my mother.

Through her faith, my mother saved my physical and spiritual life. She brought me into Mother Church! It was

Mother Church who then entrusted me to the care of the Mother of Mothers: Mary who is the Mother of all who in

Baptism are anointed Kings, Prophets and Priests, greater than all the mothers of the Kings of old. She is the true

mother of Kings! But Kings need counsel: Mary is also the Mother of Good Counsel because her practical advice and

direction is above all to trust in the will of God as revealed to us in her Son, Jesus Christ.

~ Fr Paulo Bagini

Spiritual

Challenge

Have you ever told your child their story?

They are children of God, but yours as well.

Mary is their mother, but so are you.

What is their story, which is also your story?

Mary guides us to Christ, but when did

the journey begin?

Meditate on it.

of the Sun

Most High, all-powerful, all-good

Lord, all praise is yours, all glory,

honour and blessings.

To you alone, Most High, do they

belong; no mortal lips are worthy

to pronounce your name.

We praise you, Lord, for all your

creatures, especially for Brother

Sun, who is the day through

whom you give us light.

And he is beautiful and radiant

with great splendour, of you Most

High, he bears your likeness.

We praise you, Lord, for Sister

Moon and the stars, in the

heavens you have made them

bright, precious and fair.

We praise you, Lord, for Brothers

Wind and Air, fair and stormy, all

weather’s moods, by which you

cherish all that you have made.

We praise you, Lord, for Sister

Water, so useful, humble,

precious and pure.

We praise you, Lord, for Brother

Fire, through whom you light

the night.

He is beautiful, playful, robust,

and strong.

We praise you, Lord, for Sister

Earth, who sustains us with

her fruits, coloured flowers,

and herbs.

We praise and bless you, Lord,

and give you thanks, and serve

you in all humility.

Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd,

I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in

green pastures;

he leads me beside

still waters;

he restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths

for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through

the darkest valley,

I fear no evil;

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff—

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy

shall follow me

all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the

house of the Lord

my whole life long.

Mother of Our Mother,

a service and a place of honour

- PSALM 139

Imagine a child lying at peace in its mother’s arms. Now ask yourself: who in this image could be saying the words

of this Psalm? It’s not as straightforward a question as it might seem. Both mother and child can speak these words

of the Psalm to God, their Creator. But some of these words can be addressed by the child to the mother. She

has played an important role in bringing him into the world, co-operating freely in God’s work of his creation and

allowing him to be knit together safely in her womb.

God could have brought about His plan for our salvation in any way He wanted, and what He has chosen to do

is to work through Christian motherhood – your Christian motherhood. He has chosen to bring new life into this

world through your free choice to be open to this gift and your commitment to welcoming it in love. The service of

Christian motherhood is not drudgery, but honour: the honour of taking part in the very work of God, who creates

each child “fearfully and wonderfully,” and entrusts you with the privilege of helping these children, by His grace, to

become saints.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary.

When you pray the Rosary, reflect on

how Our Lady Mary’s acts of motherhood

help her son Jesus, our Saviour, to carry

out his ministry.

What does this reveal to you about

“A sower went out to sow.”

In this parable Our Lord

imagines the world to be a

great ploughed field ready

for sowing. The seed is the

Word of God, as Jesus explains

to his disciples. The seed that

falls on fertile ground bears

very much fruit. We can think

of the beads of the Rosary in

the same way. Each bead is

a seed, and when we pray it,

we are broadcasting the good

seed of the Gospel. Every Our

Father and Hail Mary and

Glory Be are seeds falling

into the hungry earth and

producing great fruit.

Meditation

The Hail Mary tells us all we

need to know about Jesus

and Mary. It is a doctrinal

compendium. In the first

half we pray “Blessed is the

fruit of thy womb, Jesus.”

Now what grows in the womb

of a mother is a human child.

So, we can see here the full

humanity of Jesus.

In part two we say “Holy

Mary, Mother of God.” Here

we profess the full divinity

of Jesus, and Mary’s

motherhood. Jesus is God

and Mary is his mother.

Mary conceives the Divine

Person Jesus in his full

divinity and humanity.

This is true theology.

A Rosary

Meditation

The Rosary opens up for us a

whole wonderful supernatural

universe. Not only do we

enter into the heart of the

Incarnation of Jesus, but

we are reminded also of

our companions the angels.

The Hail Mary begins with

the angelic salutation from

Gabriel to Our Lady. The

Annunciation is the still point

of the turning world, and vast

realms of angels await Mary’s

reply. As we pray the Rosary,

we worship God with all the

choirs of angels in heaven,

and we bring great joy to our

“If only I can touch the fringe

of his garment I will be

healed.” The afflicted woman

in the Gospel has such great

faith in Jesus she believes

that just by touching the

hem of his tunic she will be

healed. Jesus is fully present

to her but she touches just

the hem. Jesus is present to

us Body and Blood, Soul and

Divinity in the Eucharist, but

our various sacramentals are

like the hem of his garment.

Above all, the Rosary is like

the fringe of his cloak, but

touching it and praying with

faith we too can be healed.

A Widow Mother

- 1 KINGS 17: 7-16

Becoming a widow is shocking! You don’t ask for it and you certainly don’t want it, but what can you do? If you

have children, then you continue to do what you have always done – feed them! This is our natural instinct from the

moment they are born. We feed them. But what if there is nothing left? The widow in the passage does this for her

son and a stranger, Elijah, but what then?

Fear not!

Does the Father abandon his children? Does the Father abandon the one who has co-operated with Him in creating

these children? No. We are all children of God and God the Father does not abandon us. The hardest thing for us is

to allow ourselves to be loved, to surrender ourselves to the one who loves us infinitely. To trust that all will be well.

Mary, our blessed Mother, was told “fear not”. She too became a widow. She too was a mother. She understands.

So lean on the one who loves you. Allow yourself to be held by those loving arms. Trust in the word of the Lord for He

knows our needs and He will provide. For His love never ends.

O merciful God, take pity on those

souls who have no particular

friends and intercessors to

recommend them to Thee, who,

either through the negligence of

those that are alive, or through

length of time are forgotten by

their friends and by all. Spare

them, O Lord, and remember Thine

own mercy, when others forget to

appeal to it. Let not the souls which

Thou hast created be parted from

Thee, their Creator. They are Thy

work, and though they have sinned,

they have been redeemed by Thee.

Vouchsafe, therefore, to look upon

them and to deliver them from the

intolerable pain of absence from

Thee; the light and love of all

Thy creatures. O, place them in the

number of Thy blessed Saints and

Christ their Saviour.

Mother of all mothers

- THEOTOKOS, DEI GENITRIX, GOD BEARER

Meditation.

We have reached Advent, and the time is full of expectation. The Blessed Mother, heavily pregnant with the Word of

God, has carried Christ in her womb for nine months. But her expectation does not end in a fanfare, or with great

splendour, but in her simply looking in wonder at her tiny baby. There, as Mary looked at Jesus, Mary became who

she was always meant to be, his Mother. But there is a further mystery here which concerns another birth. Some

thirty-three years later, at the foot of the cross, in another look between Jesus and Mary, the Church was born. Here

Mary took us into her own heart, to love each of us personally and tenderly. Maybe this is part of the deep mystery

of Motherhood: that the addition of more children does not diminish the love for the children we already have, but

that we find our hearts expanded to give and receive more life and love. Surely this is the meaning of Christmas:

that Christ came, through his Mother, and made each of us capable of loving in ways we could not have imagined

or even dreamt of.

~ Fr Mark Wharton

The Maronite Church:

The Maronite Church is one of those branches in full communion with the Pope

and the Catholic Church, with self-governance under the Code of Canons of the

Eastern Churches. It is headed by Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi since 2011

and seated in Bkerke northeast of Beirut, Lebanon. His Beatitude was made a

Cardinal on 24 November 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

------

St Charbel Makhlouf was a Maronite monk and priest from Lebanon. During his

life he obtained a wide reputation for holiness and he has been canonized by

the Catholic Church. He is known among Lebanese Christians as the “Miracle

Monk of Lebanon.” St Charbel is the Patron of Lebanon.

Gabriel at the Table

- after a poem by Edip Cansever

An angel full of the radiance of God

Shed his light on the table.

He tried not to alarm her

But he was more powerful than a galaxy

And was called ‘The strength of God’ for a reason.

She looked at the light on the table

That came from nowhere.

He placed his bright words on the table

Heavier than the whole universe

Lighter than all the worlds

both seen and unseen

He put the news on the table

Beside the flowering olive tree

The words of fire.

The waiting

With which the heavenly court were waiting

He held in his eternal heart

He placed it beside a stone cup

On the table of the small house.

He placed her question on the table

What should he reply? How to explain?

Had he been briefed for this?

Only trusted

“The Holy Spirit will cover you with its Shadow

The Holy One to be born

Will be called the Son of God.”

Her eyes fixed on the table

He saw that she saw

Something of the immensity that was laid before her.

He looked out and saw across the Judean countryside

to the far hill country

He brought this thought of her cousin Elizabeth

She who was barren in her old age

Now like an olive shoot around the table.

And she looked up

For no Word from God was ever known to fail

Around that table.

He heard her words with a joy

That would fill all heaven with their radiance

“May your Word be fulfilled in me”

And the window opened

And the sun could not have shone more brightly

As it danced that day

Across the table.

Prayers

Our Father

Our Father,

Who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name;

Thy kingdom come;

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, make me holy. Body of Christ,

be my salvation. Blood of Christ, let me drink your wine.

Water flowing from the side of Christ, wash me clean.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me. Kind Jesus, hear my prayer.

Hide me within your wounds

and keep me close to you.

Defend me from the evil enemy

and call me at the hour of my death

to the fellowship of your saints

that I might sing your praise with them for all eternity.

Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women,

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my Guardian dear,

to whom God’s love commits me here,

ever this day (or night) be at my side,

to light and guard, to rule and guide.

Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

Common Prayers

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God,

the Father Almighty,

Creator of Heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into Heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting.

Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things

and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I

cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself

wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known

that anyone who fled to thy protection,

implored thy help or sought thy intercession

was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence,

I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;

to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful;

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions,

but in thy mercy hear and answer them.

Amen.

Prayer to send your

Guardian Angel to Mass

O Holy Angel at my side, go to Church for me,

kneel in my place, at Holy Mass, where I desire to be.

At Offertory, in my stead, take all I am and own and

place it as a sacrifice upon the altar throne.

At Holy Consecration’s bell, adore with seraph’s love,

my Jesus hidden in the Host, come down from heaven above.

Then pray for those I dearly love, and those who

cause me grief, that Jesus’s Blood may cleanse all hearts,

and suffering souls relieve.

And when the priest Communion takes, oh, bring my Lord

to me, that His sweet Heart may rest on mine,

and I His temple be.

Pray that this Sacrifice Divine, may mankind’s sins

efface; then bring me Jesus’s blessing home,

the pledge of every grace.

Amen.

Prayers

The Benedictus

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,

for he has visited and redeemed his people,

and has raised up a horn of salvation for us

in the house of his servant David,

as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

that we should be saved from our enemies,

and from the hand of all who hate us;

to perform the mercy promised to our fathers,

and to remember his holy covenant,

the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,

to grant us that we, being delivered

from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him without fear, in holiness and

righteousness before him all the days of our life.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

to give knowledge of salvation to his people

in the forgiveness of their sins,

through the tender mercy of our God,

when the day shall dawn upon us from on high to give

light to those who sit in darkness

and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into the way of peace.

(Lk 1:68-79) - To be said in the morning

Morning Offering

O Jesus, through the most pure heart of Mary,

I offer you all my prayers, thoughts, works

and sufferings of this day for all the intentions

of your most Sacred Heart.

O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust

in you. O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place

all my trust in you. O most Sacred Heart of Jesus,

I place all my trust in you.

The Angelus

V. The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary...

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary...

V. And the Word was made Flesh.

R. And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary...

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy

grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation

of Christ, thy Son, was made known by the message of an

angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought

to the glory of his Resurrection. Through the same Christ

our Lord.

R. Amen.

The Regina Caeli

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

For he whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.

Has risen, as he said, alleluia.

Pray for us to God, alleluia.

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.

For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray; O God, who gave joy to the world through the

resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant, we

beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin

Mary, his Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting

life. Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayers throughout the day

The Magnificat

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God

my saviour, for he has regarded the low estate of his

handmaiden.

For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;

for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and

holy is his name.

And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation

to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered

the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put

down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of

low degree;

he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he

has sent empty away.

He has helped his servant Israel, in rememberance of his

mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his

posterity for ever.

(Lk 1:46-55) - To be said in the evening

The 3 O'Clock Prayer

to the Divine Mercy

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth

for souls and the ocean of mercy opened up for the

whole world.

O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,

cover the whole world and empty yourself out upon us.

O Blood and Water which gushed forth from the heart

of Jesus as a Fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in you!

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,

have mercy on us and the whole world. (3 times)

Jesus, King of Mercy, we trust in you!

Nunc Dimittis

Lord, now let your servant depart in peace,

according to your word;

for my eyes have seen your salvation

which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and for glory to your people Israel.

(Lk 2:29-32)

Prayer to the Shoulder

Wound of Jesus

O Loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I a miserable sinner,

salute and worship the most sacred wound of thy

shoulder on which thou didst bear thy heavy Cross,

which so tore thy Flesh and laid bare thy Bones as to

inflict on thee an anguish greater than any other wound

of thy most blessed body. I adore Thee, O Jesus most

sorrowful; I praise and glorify Thee and give thee thanks

for this most sacred and painful wound, beseeching thee

by that exceeding pain and by the crushing burden of thy

heavy Cross to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me

all my mortal and venial sins, and to lead me on towards

heaven along the way of thy Cross.

Amen.

Fatima Prayers

The Pardon Prayer

The Sacrifice Prayer

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee!

I beg pardon for all those that do not believe,

do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee.

O Jesus, it is for the love of thee,

in reparation for the offences committed

against the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

and for the conversion of poor sinners

[that I do this].

The Angel's Prayer

O Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious

Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ

present in all the tabernacles of the world,

in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and

indifferences by which he is offended.

By the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

I beg the conversion of poor sinners.

Novena Prayers

Espousal of Mary

and Joseph

Hail to our patrons, happy songs we tender,

As we observe the day of their chaste wedding,

Anew the faithful enjoy the holy splendour

Shining about them,

How beautiful thou art, O Virgin Mary,

The trinity has covered thee with graces

The lavish godhead splendidly adorns thee

As thou art married.

O blessed Joseph, to thee also we sing,

Thy virtue raises thee to highest summits

Thy sanctity is a mirror reflecting,

Thy saintly Mary.

Jesus was happy to be known as your son

How much he loved you, parents of such virtue

From your belov’d arms to the world his mission

Already is started.

O blessed couple, light of earth and heaven,

Continue to inspire us with your blessing,

While the renown of your names we may leaven

By our devotion.

Eternal praise be to the mighty Godhead

Who, by the gift of Mary and St Joseph,

To our poor lives have, by their merits, added,

Gifts of Divine peace.

3rd January

Decorative Name Card

- The Holy Name of Jesus -

Supplies

• a large piece of coloured

plain paper

• pens; stickers

• sequins

• embellishments

This feast day is celebrated shortly after

Christmas to commemorate the name of the

child Jesus: “At the end of eight days, when he

was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name

given by the angel before he was conceived in

the womb” (Luke 2:21).

St. Paul in his Letter to the Philippians wrote,

“So that at Jesus’s name every knee must bend

in the heavens, on the earth and under the

earth, and every tongue proclaim to the glory

of God the Father: Jesus Christ is Lord” (2:10-11).

The name of Jesus reminds us who He is and

what he has done for us.

When we say His name faithfully and with

love we are turning to Him and asking for His

assistance.

Method

1. Using your pens write the name of Jesus in

your best handwriting, very large across the

centre of the page.

2. Use your pens, stickers and anything you

can find to make His name look as beautiful

as you can. Maybe add a colourful border to

the page. Place it on a shelf or mantel and say

His name with reverence whenever you see it.

Letter Writing

- St Francis de Sales -

24th January

St Francis was born in 1567 to a wealthy family

in France.

From an early age he wanted to be a priest but

his father was against it and wanted him to go

into politics, so he studied at university until

he could no longer deny his vocation and he

went to the seminary.

Francis went on to become an incredible

preacher and evangelist, bringing thousands

of people back to the church after they had

left due to Calvinism.

He became great friends with a Catholic saint

and mystic called St Jane Frances de Chantal

and they founded an order together. They

wrote many letters to each other and for this

reason St Francis is the patron saint of writers

and journalists.

Method

Choose a family member you haven’t seen in

a long time and write them a letter. Maybe

read more about St Francis and tell them a bit

about him and his feast day!

Supplies

• paper

• pen

• envelope

3rd February

St Blaise Prayer

- St Blaise -

Supplies

• sheet of coloured paper

• picture of St Blaise sourced

from the internet, printed

and cut out

• white paper

• glue

St Blaise was a physician from Armenia

before he became a priest and then a bishop.

He spent many years living in a cave, where

people flocked to him for cure of their bodily

and spiritual ills.

He once miraculously cured a boy on the verge

of death with a fish bone stuck in his throat.

He was eventually persecuted by Emperor

Licinius, and was interrogated, scourged and

beheaded.

He is the patron saint of ear, nose and throat

conditions.

Method

1. Stick your printed picture of St Blaise in the

centre of the coloured paper and write his

name across the top in your nicest writing

with coloured pens.

2. Cut two large candles out of the white card

and stick them in a X shape at the base of

St Blaise.

3. Write a short prayer to him at the bottom,

asking him to protect you and your family

from any throat conditions.

Try and get to Mass on this day to receive the

special blessing of the throat!

Stars, Suns and Moons

- St Josephine Bakhita -

8th February

St Josephine was born in Sudan in 1869

and was kidnapped and sold into slavery

aged seven.

She was enslaved for twelve years and endured

many sufferings throughout this time.

She was eventually brought to Italy by the

family that owned her and while there stayed

with some nuns where she encountered God

for the first time.

She was eventually freed from slavery after a

court ruled her position as a slave was against

the law. She then chose to stay with the

Canossian sisters and became a nun herself.

She is the patron saint of human trafficking

victims.

Method

St Josephine once said: “Seeing the sun, the

moon and the stars, I said to myself, “who

could be the master of these beautiful things?’

I felt a great desire to see Him, to know Him

and to pay Him homage.”

1. Using the card and pastels, make yourself

a picture covered in stars, suns and moons.

Use glitter and glue if you like, to make them

stand out.

You could also look up some Sudanese recipes

to make for dinner like sweet potato, peanut

and spinach stew, or a Sudanese lentil dish.

Supplies

• black card

• pastels

• crayons

1st March

Crepe Paper Daffodil

- St David -

Supplies

• daffodils

• green and yellow card/

paper

• pens

St David is the patron saint of Wales and was

a Bishop of Mynyw during the sixth century.

He was a renowned teacher and preacher

and was key in denouncing the heresy of

Pelagianism (an idea that original sin did

not taint our souls and humans can achieve

human perfection).

His best known miracle took place as he was

preaching in a large crowd in the village of

Llandddewi Berf, when a small hill rose him

from the ground he stood on, and a white

dove came a rested on his shoulder.

Method

Daffodils are one of the traditional symbols

of Wales, and everyone wears daffodils on

St David’s Day. So maybe buy some daffodils

to decorate your home on the feast day.

Follow instructions on YouTube for how to

make a crepe paper daffodil or how to draw a

Welsh dragon.

St Joseph Altar

- St Joseph -

19th March

St Joseph is the patron and protector of the

Church, and he is also the patron saint of

workers, the sick and the dying .

Symbols associated with St Joseph are the

carpenter’s square and the lily. The square

symbolises his trade and also truth, and the

lily represents truth and his celibate marriage

to Our Lady.

It is tradition in Sicily around the feast of

St Joseph to make an altar in your home to

honour him. This originated during a period

of drought and famine many centuries ago

when the people of Sicily turned to St Joseph

for help. The rains came eventually and the

crops prospered.

In his honour they built an altar to honour

him, laden with food for the poor, flowers, fruit

and wine. The tradition continues to this day.

Method

1. Construct a small altar to St Joseph for his

feast day. Start the day by lighting the candles

and writing any intentions on paper to place

on the altar. You can find food to donate to

the poor through a foodbank and place it on

the altar and pray the litany of St Joseph for

your intentions.

Supplies

• small table

• mantle or shelf

• statue or image of St

Joseph

• candles

• St Joseph prayers printed

• flowers in vases

• food for the poor

24th March

Hand Print Palms

- Palm Sunday -

Supplies

• green and brown card/

paper

• felt tip pens

This feast day commemorates Jesus’s

triumphant entrance into Jerusalem a week

before his crucifixion. People cut palm

branches and laid them on the floor or waved

them in the air to salute their king.

- Palms were traditionally a symbol of victory

and goodness and were symbolic of the

victory that Jesus would soon have over death.

- By riding in on a donkey, Jesus fulfilled the

Old Testament prophecy of Zechariah 9:9

“See your king comes to you, righteous and

victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey”.

The donkey symbolised peace, so those who

rode them showed they came with peaceful

intentions. Here Jesus reminds us that He is

the Prince of Peace.

Method

1. Using your whole family, draw around

everyone’s hands on the green card, and cut

them all out.

2. Cut out a long brown stem shape from the

brown card.

3. Stick all the hand print cut-outs to the stem

and create your own palm branch to display in

your home or in a front window to show the

street the significance of the day.

4. You can use pens to decorate the branch

with “Hosanna to the King!” or “Hosanna to

the Son of David” or “Hosanna in the highest”.

He is Risen Banner

- Easter Sunday -

31st March

Easter Sunday is the most important feast day

in the Christian liturgical calendar. In the same

way that we do with Christmas, it is important

to make this day (and week!) feel exciting

and a real celebration of life over death for

our family.

You can spend the evening of Holy Saturday

decorating your house with spring flowers,

which you could buy or pick that day – you

really can’t have too many! Bake cakes and

bread together and feast your way through

the week, celebrating Jesus’s resurrection

in style!

Method

1. Draw onto the card in large capital letters

that can be cut out “HE IS RISEN” – try and

make each letter a different colour or pattern

to the one next to it.

2. Cut out the letters and make a hole in the

tops of each letter with a hole punch and

thread the string through the letters. Hang

the banner up on a plain wall behind your

dining table, if you have one, or in your front

room window for all to see, and keep it up for

the whole of Easter week.

1st May

Month of Our Lady

Supplies

• a statue of Our Lady

• small altar or mantle

• pretty table cloth

• vase of flowers

• candles

• a rosary

• a wire

• beads

• miniature craft flowers

May is the month of Our Lady – it is traditional

within this month to crown Our Lady with a

crown of some sort in order to honour her as

the Queen of Heaven and Mother of God.

This can be done very simply in your home

by creating a small Marian altar and having a

short ceremony with the children.

Crownings usually take place on the 1st of May,

but you can do it any day in May. The feast of

Our Lady of Fatima (13 May) is also a nice day

to do it.

Method

1. Set up an altar for Our Lady in a prominent

place in the house using the candles, flowers,

tablecloth, and place the rosary at her feet.

2. Make a small crown for Our Lady using

gold craft wire that you can wrap around the

head of your statue a few times to make it a

perfect fit. Then thread on small seed beads

or sequins if you have any, or just continue to

form the wire into a simple crown shape.

3. Select a family member to crown Our Lady

after praying the rosary. As you do so, you can

sing or recite the following hymn, which is

used traditionally at May crownings:

Bring flowers of the rarest

bring blossoms the fairest,

from garden and woodland

and hillside and dale;

our full hearts are swelling,

our glad voices telling

the praise of the loveliest

flower of the vale!

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May,

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.

Our voices ascending,

In harmony blending,

Oh! Thus may our hearts turn

Dear Mother, to thee;

Oh! Thus shall we prove thee

How truly we love thee,

How dark without Mary

Life’s journey would be.

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May,

O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.

Miracle of the Sun

- Our Lady of Fatima -

13th May

Our Lady appeared to three young children

in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. The names of the

children were Lucia, Francesco and Jacinta.

She appeared to the children six times, and

they described her as “a lady more brilliant

than the sun”. She requested that they pray

the rosary every day to bring peace to the

world and an end to the war.

To end her apparitions, Our Lady promised a

miracle for all to see. Thousands gathered on

the hills and witnessed the “miracle of the

sun” – the weather was dark and raining, and

suddenly the sun shone through and started

to spin in the sky, creating many different

colours and looking as though it would crash

to the earth. Many people converted after

witnessing this miracle.

Method

1. Draw a large circle on your paper and then

add flames coming from the edges.

2. Using your crayons or pastels create a

multicoloured sun by filling your shape with

swirling colours, starting from the centre and

moving outwards to the edge.

3. Colour in the flames around the edges and

then use glue and glitter sprinkled on the top

to make it really look on fire.

4. Cut out your sun. If you have made a Marian

altar you can stick it on the wall above the

statue of Our Lady so she becomes Our Lady

of Fatima!

• paper

• pencils

• oil or chalk pastels

• gold glitter

2nd June

Procession

- Corpus Christi -

Supplies

• n/a

The feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the real

presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and

Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

It was proposed as a feast day by St Thomas

Aquinas to Pope Urban IV in 1264 to create

a feast focused solely on the Eucharist,

emphasising the joy of the Eucharist.

The traditional way of celebrating Corpus

Christi is by attending a procession. This

usually happens on the feast day itself or

on the Sunday closest to the feast day, and

often involves the Blessed Sacrament being

processed around the church or through the

streets outside. Children often dress in their

first communion outfits and throw rose petals

on the ground ahead of the procession, while

prayers are said and hymns sung. It is an

incredibly beautiful occasion.

Method

Why not try and attend a Corpus Christi

procession at your local parish? If there is not

one in your local parish then perhaps you

could make a day trip with the family to a

church in a town nearby that is holding one.

If you cannot manage to make it to a

procession, you could look up the times of

“adoration” in your parish and take the family

with you. Talk with the children before you go

about the meaning of the Real Presence – tell

them to sit quietly for a moment with Jesus

who so desperately wants us to visit Him and

spend time with Him – as much as He wants

us to adore Him, He also wants to look on us

with love. Make it a quiet and solemn time of

prayer for all of you.

The Rosary

- Immaculate Heart of Mary -

8th June

On this feast day we meditate on the interior

life of Mary – her joys and sorrows, her virtues

and perfections and above all her love for God

the Father, her maternal love for Jesus Christ

and her motherly and compassionate love for

all mankind.

The immaculate heart of Mary is usually

depicted with as being pierced with seven

swords or wounds, in honour of the seven

sorrows of Mary, with roses wrapped around

the heart.

Method

Try to gather your family together today in

front of a statue of Our Lady, lit with candles,

to pray a rosary together (if you don’t know

how, it is very simple and there are many

tutorials online to show you how).

A full five decades of the rosary should normally

take about fifteen minutes (depending how

fast you are!). If you don’t think your children

will manage saying the full five decades, try

saying one or two, which should only take

five minutes. You could choose mysteries of

the rosary that focus on Our Lady such as the

Assumption, Annunciation or Crowning of

Our Lady.

Don’t fret too much about them sitting/

kneeling quietly for now if you have never

done it before. Just stay calm, be patient and

demonstrate how you expect it to be done.

If they are old enough, get them to take it in

turns to lead by praying the first half of each

prayer. They will enjoy the responsibility and it

will help them to focus!

• rosary

• statue of Our Lady

• candles

• matches or lighter

23rd July

Peacock Feather

- St Liborius of Le Mans -

Supplies

• heavy card

• tissue paper in peacock

colours (blue, green, aqua,

purple, yellow)

• pva glue thinned with

water (1:1 ratio)

• black and/or metallic finetip

markers or Sharpies

• sticky gems or shiny

stickers (optional)

• ribbon or yarn to hang

St Liborius was the bishop of Le Mans in the

fourth century. He was a holy man in life,

and died in the arms of his friend, St Martin

de Tours. For this reason he is said to be a

patron of a good death. There is a legend that

a peacock guided his pallbearers to his grave,

which is why this bird became one of his

symbols. Traditionally, peacocks are a symbol

of resurrection because they shed their

feathers each year but regrow them just as

gloriously. Peacock feathers remind us of the

beauty of God’s glorious plan for us: to raise us

to eternal life to live with him.

Method

1. Draw a teardrop shape onto the piece of

card, making the outline dark so you will still

be able to see it through the layers of tissue

paper.

2. Paint a thin layer of the diluted glue over the

teardrop, add a layer of tissue paper (perhaps

a green to start with) then lightly brush

more glue over. You may want to add a few

more layers of the tissue paper to build up a

stronger colour. Don’t worry about creases

or even tears in the paper as this will give it a

lovely variegated effect. Also, don’t worry if you

go outside the lines, as the feather will be cut

out at the end.

3. Cut your remaining tissue paper colours

into ovals or tear drops of graduated sizes and

apply them to the fat end of the feather, one

atop the other, starting with the largest and

getting smaller. Use whatever colours you

like: there is so much variety in how peacock

feathers are drawn there truly is no one right

way. Try to be very sparing painting the glue

onto each layer, using just enough to dampen

it down completely, but if your feather does

get too soggy to work with just set it aside to

dry or help it along with a hairdryer. This is a

very forgiving craft!

4. Once you have all the tissue paper layers

you want, leave it to dry. When it is dry, cut out

the feather and embellish it with markers and

gems if you like.

5. There are several ways to finish this craft:

punch a hole in the end of one or two feathers

and thread a ribbon through to hang up; or

make about five feathers, glue them together

in a fan shape, and cut a peacock’s head and

body out of blue paper to glue in the centre;

or, if you have many children making multiple

feathers, you can cut out a larger peacock in

silhouette, hang it on the wall, and give it a

cascading tail of feathers.

Thinking of your Grandparents

- St Joachim and St Anne -

26th July

St Joachim and St Anne were the parents of

Our Lady. They are not mentioned in the bible,

so anything we know about them comes from

Catholic tradition/legend.

Any writings of them in ancient manuscripts

tell the same story – that Mary was promised

to Joachim and Anne by an angel, was

consecrated to God, and henceforth was

destined to remain a virgin all of her life.

However little we know, we can be certain that

Mary had good and faithful parents, who can

serve as role models to us, and deserve to be

emulated for their devotion to God, and Our

Lady the Mother of God, and their grandson,

Jesus.

Method

Think today about how you could devote

some time with the children to thinking of

their own grandparents. Maybe they could

print a picture of St Joachim and St Anne to

colour in, write them a letter on the back and

send or deliver it to them.

Maybe you could start a novena for their

grandparents to St Joachim and St Anne.

If your children don’t have any grandparents,

perhaps they could think of visiting an elderly

neighbour with you for a while.

Peg Dolls

- St Clare of Assisi -

Supplies

• multipack of wooden peg

dolls (available to buy on

Amazon!)

• acrylic paint

Clare was an Italian saint and one of the first

followers of St Francis of Assisi.

She was from wealthy parents who had

decided to marry her in line with family

tradition. However, as a teen she heard St

Francis preach, and then went to him to ask

how she could live out the Gospel. Shortly

afterwards she became a nun with the

Benedictines and later founded her own order

called the “Poor Clares”.

A while later, during the crusades, the convent

was about to be attacked by waring armies.

In an attempt to protect the convent St Clare

requested to be taken to its walls carrying

the Blessed Sacrament. There she prayed

begging Our Lord to protect them now, as she

no longer could. The army miraculously did

not attack and retreated.

She was canonised only two years after her

death.

Method

1. Look up some pictures online of wooden

peg dolls of St Clare of Assisi and have a

go! Paint her in her brown habit and veil

(which is relatively easy!) holding the Blessed

Sacrament in front of her to ward away the

armies.

Varnish if possible to protect the paintwork

once dry.

Prayer Card

- St Maximilian Kolbe -

14th August

Maximilian was born in Poland in 1894. His

life was strongly influenced by a vision of the

Virgin Mary that he had aged twelve.

As a priest he travelled around Poland

promoting Mary Marian devotion, and set up

a religious printing press.

When the Second World War began he was

one of the only Franciscans to remain in the

monastery and opened a hospital there for

the injured and also sheltered refugees.

He later refused to sign papers saying he was

a German citizen, and when the monastery

was shut down he was arrested and sent to

Auschwitz.

During his time there, some prisoners were

selected to be starved to death. Kolbe was not

one of them but he volunteered to take the

place of one of the men who had a family.

He was the last to die in the group and was

eventually given a lethal injection, after

spending his last days praying for and tending

to the needs of others.

Method

1. Print a small picture of St Maximilian Kolbe,

stick it on to a piece of card and then cut it out.

2. On the back of your prayer card, write a

short prayer to St Maximilian asking for the

graces to have a faith as strong as his, and to

always put others before yourself.

Supplies

• small printed picture of

St Maximilian Kolbe

• card

• glue

8th September

Birthday Cake for Mary

- Nativity of Our Lady -

Supplies

• cake ingredients of your

choice

This feast day celebrates the birth of Our Lady

and is celebrated nine months after the feast

of the Immaculate Conception.

It is celebrated in many different ways all

over the world. In Malta they have brass band

marches and concerts and firework displays;

in Mumbai they celebrate with a week long

festivity called Bandra Fair, where pilgrims of

all faiths flock to a shrine of Our Lady of the

Mount to leave prayer requests.

Method

Celebrate this special feast day by making

a special birthday cake for the family, with

candles, and sing Happy Birthday to Our Lady.

If you want to make it even more of a

celebration, invite other families to join you

and, asking everyone to bring an allocated

amount of cupcakes, make a cupcake rosary.

If you can’t get that many cupcakes together

you could always make enough to make one

decade!

Confession

23rd September

- St Pio of Pietrelcina -

Francesco (later known as Pio joined the

Capuchin order of Friars aged fifteen and

spent most of his life in the convent of San

Giovanni Rotondo.

He was marked by the stigmata (the wounds

of Christ) and he attracted many followers

who travelled from all over the world to see

him and have him hear their confessions.

He was renowned for his confessions, often

knowing what people were going to say (or

not say!) before they said it. He was a strong

proponent of weekly confession, describing it

as “the soul’s bath”.

His five rules for spiritual growth involved:

weekly confession, daily communion,

spiritual reading, meditation and frequent

examination of conscience.

Method

Why not try to get everyone in the family to

confession this week in honour of St Pio?

Dedicate some time to reading through a

children’s examination of conscience together

before you go and say some prayers to St Pio,

asking for his help and direction to make a

good and holy confession.

If none of the children have made their

confession yet, a discussion on things they

might have done to offend God and how they

could try harder next time would suffice.

Rosary Decade

- St Therese of Lisieux -

'

'

Supplies

• coloured card

• glue

• paper

• pens

Born in 1873 to St Louis and Zelie Martin,

she was one of five sisters. Sadly her mother

died when she was four and this affected her

greatly.

As a child, although she could be spoilt and

petulant, she was always very in tune with her

spiritual side. She used to count the sacrifices

she would make every day on her rosary beads

and offer them to Jesus.

After a long time of prayer and writing to

bishops and even the pope she became a

Carmelite aged fiftteen. She was known for

her quiet and humble life there, and it was only

after her death of tuberculosis aged twentyfour

that her writings to her mother superior

were discovered and circulated and published

as The Story of a Soul. She is a doctor of the

church.

Method

1. Cut twelve circles from your card and stick

them onto the paper in the form of a decade

of the rosary, with one at the start with a gap

(where you can draw some string) then ten for

the Hail Marys and a final circle at the end.

2. On the first bead pray to St Therese and

ask for her help and intercession to keep

you simple and childlike always, and to see

opportunities for small acts of kindness and

sacrifice every day, so that you may easily

reach heaven, as she did.

3. Try to offer up as many sacrifices and good

deeds as you can over the next few days – each

bead represents a day. Whenever you do one,

mark it on your bead for that day with a small

heart in pen.

4. On the last bead offer your sacrifices and

deeds to Jesus with a prayer.

St Teresa Colouring

- St Teresa of Avila -

15th October

Teresa of Avila was a Spanish Carmelie nun,

mystic and religious reformer.

Her mother died when she was fourteen and

her father had her moved into a convent aged

fifteen to be educated. She became a nun

aged twenty.

Aged forty she started a new order of nuns,

as she wanted to live a simpler life than the

one she had been leading. It was a silent

order, where she wanted everyone to devote

themselves to praying to and listening to God.

She wrote many books about prayer,

encouraging people to pray more.

She died in 1582, aged sixty-seven, and was

later made a doctor of the church.

Method

1. Find a colouring picture of St Teresa online

and print it off, leaving a space at the bottom

of the page and colour it in.

2. Then look up some of her most famous

quotes and inscribe it across the bottom.

One of her most famous quotes is:

“Let nothing disturb you,

let nothing frighten you.

All things pass.

God does not change.

Patience achieves everything.”

Soul Cakes

- All Saints‘ Day -

Supplies

• n/a

Also known as All Hallows Day or the Solemnity

of All Saints.

All Saints’ Day is part of the season of

Allhallowtide, from 31st October to 2nd

November.

On this day we celebrate al the saints in

heaven who are praying for us on earth.

Method

1. A traditional practice for celebrating All

Saints (and Allhallowtide) that started in the

medieval era is a practice called “souling”.

Have a look at how to make “soul cakes”. You

can have them blessed by a priest before

distributing them to your neighbours, friends

and family. Perhaps you could choose some

different saints to pray to for all the people you

give the cakes to.

Prayers for Souls

- All Souls‘ Day -

2nd November

On All Souls’ Day we remember all the faithful

departed. It is a great opportunity to take your

family to the local graveyard, to talk to them

about purgatory and to pray for the dead. You

can take jars with candles along with you and

maybe adopt a grave that looks untended and

pray for that soul.

There are indulgences available to all of those

who visit graveyards to pray for the dead in

November.

Method

1. Make a small altar for your souls in purgatory,

propping up any photos you have on the altar,

and lighting a candle in front of each picture

each evening to keep them in your mind and

prayers.

If you have suffered miscarriage in the past

maybe put up any scan photos or photos of

you pregnant to remember your babies and

to ask them to pray for you.

Supplies

• small table or mantlepiece

• tablecloth

• printed photos on card/

framed/laminated of

people close to your family

who have died

• tealight candles – enough

for each soul you want to

pray for

2nd December

Advent Wreaths & Christmas Paper Chains

- Advent -

Supplies

Advent Wreaths

• oasis ring and base

• greenery – such as

rosemary, holly, fir, ivy,

juniper, cedar

• five Advent candles

Paper Chains

• paper or card

• glue or stapler

Method – Advent Wreaths

1. Soak your oasis in the sink until bubbles stop

rising to the water surface and it feels weighty

to lift out of the water.

2. Starting with small bits of greenery, work

from the bottom sides and centre.

One can decorate it with dried orange

slices (slice oranges/grapefruits/tangerines

about half a centimetre thick and cook on

greaseproof paper on a very low oven setting

for around two hours until they have a dried,

almost stained glass aesthetic).

Method – Paper Chains

1. This is a lovely way for children to be in charge

of a decorating the home for a Christmas

project. To make the chains, cut strips of card

around one inch thick and eight inches long

out of pretty paper or old Christmas cards.

2. Glue or staple the ends together.

3. Loop the next strip through the loop, staple

the ends of that strip together and continue.

Dressing up for St Lucy

- St Lucy -

13th December

St Lucy was a virgin martyr in the early fourth

century.

According to legend she brought food and aid

to Christians hiding in the Roman catacombs.

In order to light her way and leave her hands

free to carry as much food as possible, it was

said she used to wear a candlelit crown on her

head.

Her feast day is known as a day of light and

is a precursor to the arrival of the “light of the

world” at Christmas.

Method

1. Traditional celebrations of St Lucy involve one

of the daughters in the family (traditionally the

eldest) dressing in white and serving coffee

and baked goods (usually ginger biscuits) to

the rest of the family, and to visitors during the

day.

If you’d rather not light a wreath on her head,

you could set the table with candles and turn

off all the lights to create the atmosphere!

Supplies

• white gown

• red sash

• green wreath crown with

candles

• ginger biscuits

• coffee

Zalabee

- The Baptism of Our Lord -

Ingredients

• 3g dry yeast

• 1 ½ cups lukewarm water

• 4 cups flour

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tbsp oil

• granulated sugar

• cinnamon

• vegetable oil (for frying)

Doughnut cakes, or zalabee, originally come

from Syria and have long been associated

with the Orthodox Church’s celebration of

Epiphany. While you prepare these doughnuts,

you’ll find that your actions directly mimic the

act of baptism: first, you dunk the dough in

oil, then you bring the cakes out of the pot

transformed, and finally, you cover them with

powdered sugar, just as baptism brings a

covering of the gift of eternal life.

Method

1. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water.

2. Sift the flour with the salt into a large bowl.

3. Stir the yeast and the oil gradually into the

flour.

4. Knead briefly until the dough is well-mixed

and smooth.

5. Let the dough sit, lightly covered, for 45

minutes to an hour – until the dough has risen.

6. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch, and cut

it into strips about 2 inches wide and 7 inches

long.

7. Fry the strips in a frying pan in about 1/2 to

3/4 inch of hot oil until they are golden brown.

8. Drain on paper towels.

9. Sprinkle the zalabee with sugar and

cinnamon.

Sudanese Beef Stew

8th February

- St Josephine Bakhita -

St Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of

both Sudan and South Sudan, was born in

the Darfur region in western Sudan. Born into

a respected family and living, as she put it, a

“happy and carefree life”, she would certainly

have eaten this wholesome and hearty stew

or a version of it. Later in life as a sister in the

Canossian convent at Schio, Italy, she served,

for a time, as cook among many other roles,

quite possibly bringing this taste of Africa to

the other nuns.

Method

1. In a large casserole dish , sauté the onions

for 2–3 minutes. Add the beef and cook until

brown.

2. Add the cinnamon stick, spices, and a bit of

salt and pepper. Add the carrots and tomatoes

and cover with a lid. Cook on low to medium

heat for 15–20 minutes stirring occasionally.

3. Remove the lid and add minced garlic,

potatoes and 1 ½ cups of beef broth. Stir in

tomato paste, cover with the lid and cook for

an additional 40–45 minutes.

4. Remove the lid and stir until some of the

liquid evaporates. Add more salt and pepper

according to taste.

5. Serve with rice or flat bread.

Ingredients

• 2 lbs cubed beef

• 3-4 tbsp vegetable oil

• 4-5 sliced onions

• 2-3 diced carrots

• 1 cinnamon stick

• 1 tbsp coriander powder

• 1 tbsp cumin powder

• 1 tsp curry powder

• ¼ tsp ground cardamom

• 1 (14.5 oz) can diced

tomatoes

• 2-3 cloves garlic (minced)

• 1 ½ lbs diced potatoes.

• 1 ½ cups beef broth

• 2 tbsp tomato paste

• salt and pepper

Duck Confit

- Our Lady of Lourdes -

Ingredients

• 4 duck legs

• handful of thyme sprigs

• sunflower oil, for drizzling

• 500g carrots, sliced

• 4 garlic cloves, finely

chopped

• 2 x 400g cans of white

beans, drained

Did you like this recipe?

Depending where you are in the world,

this could be an incredibly lavish or rather

economical meal, as duck legs, expensive

and somewhat hard to find here in London,

England, are rather less so in other places.

Never the less this tender and aromatic meal

is always a crowd pleaser. St Bernadette is

likely to have eaten this French cuisine classic

with her family, quite possibly with plenty of

duck when the times were good in her early

childhood, and definitely with more beans

than anything else during the hard times

when they lived in a one room converted jail!

Method

1. Salt the duck legs a day or two before

cooking, scatter with some of the thyme

sprigs, then cover and chill until needed.

2. Heat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan.

3. Heat a little oil in a shallow casserole or

roasting tin. If the duck legs have been salted

in advance, pat them dry with kitchen paper.

Sizzle the legs in the tin or casserole, skinside

down until golden brown and the fat has

rendered out. Turn and cook for 10–15 mins to

brown them all over.

4. Remove the duck legs to a plate and pour

away half the fat from the casserole or tin.

5. Return it to the heat and fry the carrots,

garlic and thyme along with some seasoning

for 5 mins until the carrots are starting to

soften.

6. Sit the duck legs on top, skin-side up, then

pour about 100ml water over the veg. Bring

to a simmer, cover and transfer to the oven to

cook for 1 hr 30 mins.

7. Remove the casserole from the oven and

uncover it.

8. Turn the oven up to 200°C/180°C fan.

9. Lift the duck out onto a plate and stir the

beans through the carrots and thyme. Sit the

duck back on top, then return to the oven,

uncovered, to cook for another 20–30 mins

until the duck skin is crisp and the beans are

Remove from the oven and leave to rest for 10

mins, then serve straight from the dish.

Lentil Soup

14th February

- Ash Wednesday -

As we begin the wonderfully challenging

season of Lent it can be difficult to plan what

to feed our families. This soup, with its protein

rich lentils, is excellent whatever season of

motherhood you’re in. It can be blended

smooth for texture-shy toddlers, doubled or

trebled in quantity if your table is surrounded

by young people who resemble bottomless

pits at dinner time, and it is also good to

freeze if you’re at that rather particular stage

of motherhood where you don’t know if it will

be just you and your husband, or you, your

children and their friends, as hungry for the

family meal time as the meal itself.

Method

1. Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium

heat. Add onions, carrots and celery; cook and

stir until the onion is tender. Add in garlic, bay

leaf, oregano and basil; cook for a few more

minutes.

2. Stir in lentils, and add water and tomatoes.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer

until lentils are tender (at least 1 hour).

3. When ready to serve, stir in spinach and

cook until it wilts. Stir in vinegar and season

with salt and pepper.

Ingredients

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 1 onion, chopped

• 2 carrots, diced

• 2 stalks of celery, chopped

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 bay leaf

• 1 tsp dried oregano

• 1 tsp dried basil

• 2 cups dry lentils

• 8 cups water

• 1 (14.5 oz) can crushed

tomatoes

• ½ cup spinach, rinsed and

thinly sliced

• 2 tbsp vinegar

• salt to taste

• ground black pepper to

taste

Pan - fried Sea Bream fillets and Potatoes

- Fish Friday -

Inrgedients

• 1 sea bream

• 1 lb (500 g) potatoes

• extra virgin olive oil to

taste

• fine salt to taste

• black pepper to taste

• 1 clove garlic

• 1 sprig rosemary

• 1 sprig thyme

Makes 12

Our fish Friday recipes might just be the most

popular part of the planner recipe section.

Whether you’re in a country that abstains from

meat every Friday and need to add some new

ideas to your repertoire, or are somewhere

that only abstains in lent and need to come

up with six Fridays of meals, I hope we can

help you to live this liturgical time around the

domestic altar of your dinner table.

Method

1. Cut the potatoes into roughly 0.2-inch slices,

without peeling. Place them in a bowl and

season with salt black pepper and oil.

2. Add the garlic clove, the thyme and

rosemary sprigs. Place the potatoes in a large

pan and cook on a medium flame for around

30 minutes. Try not to turn them over too

frequently to avoid breaking them up. Clean

the sea bream in the meantime. Gut and

descale the fish.

3. Place the sea bream on a cutting board and

cut the first fillet using a knife. Turn the fish

over and cut the other fillet out.

4. Once the potatoes are soft and have

browned, place them in a container and leave

them on one side.

5. Place a drizzle of oil in the same pan you

used to cook the potatoes and place the sea

bream fillets in the middle. Cook for around

10 minutes on a low flame and gently turn

the fillets over halfway through. Add salt and

pepper to taste.

6. Add the potatoes when the fillets are done.

Heat them up and serve your pan-fried sea

bream and potatoes!

Vegetable Pie

15th March

- Meat-Free Friday -

This vegetable pie is as good looking as it is

delicious. If you let it cool slightly it’s portable

too, great for parish or school events that seem

to roll on regardless of the Lenten season. Or

how about making double and dropping

one round to someone in need, a new mum,

someone home from hospital, or someone

new to your parish community.

Method

1. Start with the bechamel: heat the milk with

a pinch of nutmeg in a saucepan and bring to

the boil.

2. In the meantime, prepare the butter and

flour in another saucepan: melt the butter

and add the sieved flour and salt. Stir until the

mixture thickens to a smooth paste.

3. Now add the milk to the mix, stirring all the

while until the bechamel thickens correctly.

When thickened and smooth leave it to cool

at room temperature.

4. In the meantime, beat the eggs and add the

grated parmesan cheese. Add this mixture to

the bechamel and amalgamate thoroughly.

5. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

6. Now prepare the base for the vegetable

pie: roll the puff pastry out using a rolling pin

according to the shape of the baking tray

you’ll use; place it inside a 9 inch baking tray

that is 2 inches tall and, if necessary, cut away

any excess pastry around the edge.

7. Now prepare the vegetables: wash the

courgette and peel the carrots, then use a

mandolin to thinly slice them lengthwise,

creating ribbon strips.

8. Pour the bechamel and egg mixture onto

the pie base and start decorating the pie with

the vegetable ribbons: carefully arrange them

vertically to create a concentric decoration

covering the entire surface.

9. Now dab some oil onto the pie and add a

little salt. Bake in the oven for around 50–60

minutes at 180°C and your vegetable pie is

ready!

Ingredients

• 1 roll puff pastry

• 350g courgettes

• 350g carrots

• fine salt to taste

• 40g extra virgin olive oil

• 300ml whole milk

• 25g plain flour

• 25g butter

• nutmeg to taste

• 40g parmigiano Reggiano

DOP cheese for grating

• 2 medium eggs

Unleavened Bread

- Maundy Thursday -

Ingredients

• 300g bread flour

• 200ml hot water

This bread recipe could as easily be in the

activity or even prayer section of the planner.

As mums we can use the simplest things to

teach our children, and oftentimes these

little things are mentioned as cornerstones in

their lives a decade later, when we’d planned

them not 5 minutes before! On this day

where we remember most the institution of

the Eucharist, you could prepare and eat this

bread with your children while reading and

talking about the Gospel of the Last Supper,

helping to bring alive one of the most vital

parts of our faith, especially for those yet to

make their first Holy Communion.

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C.

2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Mix the flour and the water together until

the dough is soft and smooth. Knead for 5

minutes.

4. Place the flattened dough in the oven tray

and bake in the preheated oven until bread is

cooked, 20–30 minutes.

Puff Pastry Doves

19th May

- Pentecost -

These doves are just great! Ideal for pentecost

picnics or parish parties they look good,

taste even better and, of course, provide an

opportunity to talk with the children about the

descent of the Holy Spirit. If you have children

or god children making their confirmation this

year, this is also an excellent decorative and

delicious dessert for their party or reception.

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

2. Start by making the cream: heat the milk

in a saucepan with half a vanilla bean and its

seeds; beat the egg yolk and sugar together in

a bowl with a whisk, then add the flour.

3. Remove the vanilla bean and gradually add

the warm milk to the mixture and stir with a

whisk.

4. Place the mixture back on the stove and stir

continuously until it thickens.

5. Place the pastry cream in a bowl and leave

to cool.

6. Now take the puff pastry, sprinkle the work

top with flour and gently roll the pastry out

with a rolling pin.

7. Print or draw a dove-shaped template, cut

it out from stiff material, like cardboard, place

it on the puff pastry and cut the doves out

by running a knife around the edge of the

template.

8. Once you have cut out the doves, place

them on an oven tray lined with parchment

paper and use a brush to dab with an egg

beaten with a spoon of cream. Sprinkle the

powdered sugar over the doves and bake in

an oven preheated to 180°C for 20 minutes.

9. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

10. Once cooled, carefully cut your doves in

half and fill them with the cream. Close it with

the top half of puff pastry and dust with the

powdered sugar.

Ingredients

• 460g puff pastry

for the pastry cream:

• 500ml whole milk

• 50g flour

• 150g sugar

• 6 egg yolks

• 1 vanilla bean

for garnishing:

• 1 egg

• powdered sugar to taste

• 1 tbsp cream

The apparitions of Our Lady in Akita, Japan,

in 1973 are associated with a carved wooden

statue of Our Lady that has wept repeatedly.

The apparitions were unusual in that the

weeping statue of the Virgin Mary was

broadcast on Japanese national television.

to this lesser known modern apparition of Our

Lady, find Akita, Japan, on the map and even

separate shallow plates then coat one fillet

at a time first in flour then eggs and finally in

breadcrumbs. Season the chicken with salt

and pepper.

plate, the chicken next to the rice and pour the

vegetable curry on top. Serve immediately.

Sant‘ Anna’s Tears

26th July

- St Anne -

Saint Anne represents the model

grandmother. She provides the religious

foundation for someone who is of central

importance to the Italian family.

Her importance is attested to in Italian Catholic

tradition by the vast number of festivals and

recipes which are dedicated to her.

According to a legend Saint Anne prayed to

the Lord for 40 days, with many tears and

from these tears a very special dessert comes

to life which in Salento they prepare in honour

of the saint, and which is called “Saint Anne’s

Tears”.

Method

1. Mix the flour with the sugar and the lard.

Add the glasses of brandy and continue

kneading; add the egg yolks, still working the

dough well, then pour in the orange juice and

mix well.

2. From the dough roll out long sticks and cut

them into small pieces roughly 1 cm.

3. Fry them in very hot oil, drain them well and

mix them with the chopped almonds.

4. Pour them into a pan, where you have

melted the honey over a low heat, for a few

minutes.

5. Put everything onto a serving plate, shaping

it into the desired shape (cake, doughnut,

etc.) and garnish it with the aniseed sugared

almonds.

Ingredients

• 1kg flour

• 200g sugar

• 200g lard

• 5 shot glasses of brandy

• 5 egg yolks

• 1 orange (juice)

Saint Lawrence skewers

- Saint Lawrence -

Ingredients

• 1kg chicken thighs,

boneless and skinless and

cut lengthways

• 150g natural yoghurt

• 2 tsp paprika

• 2 tsp ground cumin

• 0.5 tsp cinnamon

• 0.5 tsp dried chilli flakes

• 2 tsp garlic granules

(or 3 cloves of fresh garlic)

• 1 lemon, zest and juice

• salt and freshly ground

pepper

If you want to tell your children the story

of St Lawrence today, forget the shooting

stars, just make them a ham sandwich. This

martyr of the Early Church is renowned for

being burned to death on a grill, but his

works of mercy helping widows and orphans

are just as famous. For many centuries the

convent of Poor Clares next to the church of

San Lorenzo in Rome, Italy, which bears his

name has distributed bread and ham to the

poor on his feast day. This ancient tradition,

in Latin “Panis et perna” is so enduring that it

has been added to the name of the church,

the street and the whole neighbourhood, now

called St Lawrence in Panisperna. So consider

this recipe a two for one, as in honour of his

flame–grilled martyrdom we have chicken

skewers ready to barbeque and hearty ham

sandwiches to recall his good works. With

both his faith and good works he is a Saint

who is really in love with God. Let him inspire

us and our children in self sacrifice and the

service of others.

Method

1. Mix the marinade ingredients together well

in a large bowl.

2. Add the chicken thighs and marinate for at

least 30 minutes or, even better, overnight.

3. Thread onto skewers and cook for about

20 minutes until golden on the outside and

cooked through.

Bocadillos

12th October

- Our Lady of the Pillar -

The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar is celebrated

on 12 October, and she is the Patroness of the

Hispanic peoples. A grand nine-day festival

known as Fiestas del Pilar is celebrated in

Saragossa (Zaragoza) every year in her honour.

Bocadillo, or bocata de lomo, is a Spanish

sandwich that consists of bread filled with

pork tenderloin.

Method

1. Season pork steak or chop with salt, pepper,

garlic powder, onion powder and paprika

to taste on both sides. Drizzle with olive oil.

Marinate 20 minutes at room temperature.

2. Rub both sides of baguette halves with cut

side of garlic clove.

3. Grate tomato, cut side down, directly onto

cut sides of bread. Spread evenly with a knife.

Season to taste with salt. Set aside.

4. Heat cast-iron skillet over high heat. Cook

pork steak or chop until well-browned and just

cooked through, about 2–3 minutes per side.

Remove to plate and let rest 5–10 minutes.

5. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place

on bottom half of bread and drizzle with a

little olive oil. Cover with top half and serve

immediately.

Arroz Rojo

- Our Lady of Guadalupe -

Ingredients

• 1 cup long grain white rice

• ¼ cup olive oil

• ¼ diced onion

• 1 medium diced garlic clove

• 2 cups hot water

• ½ cup hot chicken broth

• 1 cup tomato sauce

• 1 tsp salt

Did you like this recipe?

Arroz Rojo, or Mexican Red Rice, is a staple

in Mexican cuisine, and perhaps the most

commonly served side dish. Juan Diego, to

whom Mary appeared, was a peasant and this

kind of cooking, taking simple, economical

ingredients and adding time and love to

bring something delicious to the table, is

something peasant mothers have been

doing for centuries. Let us take Our Lady, in

her simplicity, as our model for serving our

families and those around us.

Method

1. In a medium saucepan heat ¼ cup of oil on

medium heat. Once hot, add one cup of long

grain white rice.

2. Sauté the rice until it turns a golden-brown

colour (but be careful it does not burn). This

should take about 5 minutes.

3. Next pour the rice and the oil into a sieve

and allow the oil to drain from the rice.

4. Add diced onion and diced garlic to the

saucepan where you cooked the rice. There

will be just enough oil left in the saucepan to

sauté the onion and garlic. Sauté until soft.

5. Add the rice back in, along with 1 cup of hot

water, ½ cup of hot chicken broth, ⅓ cup of

tomato sauce, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Using

a fork, carefully stir everything together just

until combined. This is the only time you want

to stir during the cooking process. Too much

stirring will break up the rice and make it

mushy. Bring the mixture to a simmer, turn

down the heat to medium-low and cover.

6. After about 10 minutes, use a fork to dig a

small hole in the middle of the rice until you

reach the bottom of the pot. If there isn’t any

more water left, add another ½ cup of hot

water and cover again. After about 5 minutes,

repeat again and check for water. If there isn’t

any more water left, add another ½ cup of hot

water and cover again. This last time the water

should dry much faster. Be sure to not leave

the rice unattended so it doesn’t burn on the

bottom. As soon as the water has dried up,

take the rice off of the heat. Carefully fluff with

a fork, being sure not to over-mix or break up

the rice pieces.

Partridge in a Pear Tree Dessert

25th December

- Christmas Day -

The Gift of Christ in ‘The Twelve Days of

Christmas’.

The song was written somewhere between

the 16th and 19th centuries when Roman

Catholics in England were not permitted to

practice their faith openly. So the Christmas

carol was written using secular imagery to

help catechise children in the faith. The “true

love” mentioned in each verse does not refer

to a young man or woman, but our Lord Jesus

Christ, and the “me” represents the baptised

Catholic.

The “partridge in a pear tree” is also Christ,

since that species of bird is willing to sacrifice

its life to protect its young by faking an injury

to draw predators away.

The two turtle doves stand for the Old and New

Testaments. The three French hens represent

faith, hope and love. The four calling birds

are the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke

and John. The five golden rings symbolise

the first five books of the Old Testament. The

six geese a-laying recall for the six days of

creation. Seven swans a-swimming represent

the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The eight

maids a-milking signify the eight Beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the

Holy Spirit. The 10 lords a-leaping represent

the Ten Commandments. The 11 pipers piping

stand for the eleven faithful Apostles. The 12

drummers drumming symbolise the 12 points

of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Combine the brown

sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and salt.

Set aside.

2. For the partridge, roll out pastry crust

and cut into bird shapes. Bake according to

package instructions and set aside.

3. Set the pears (sliced side up) in the pan.

Combine the lemon juice and vanilla and

brush over the pears to prevent browning.

Sprinkle with brown sugar mixture and

spread the cubed pieces of butter evenly on

top of the pears.

4. Bake for 30 minutes sliced side up. Turn the

pears sliced side down and spoon the caramel

over the top of the pears to prevent browning.

Bake for an additional 20–40 minutes . Top off

with remaining caramel sauce and crushed

pecans. Serve with vanilla ice cream and

partridge pastry.

Ingredients

• 4 medium/large pears

peeled, cored and halved

• juice from half a lemon

• ¼ cup dark brown sugar

• ½ tsp cinnamon

• ¼ tsp all spice

• ¼ tsp nutmeg

• pinch of salt

• 3 tsps chilled butter cut

into cubes

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• pecan pieces

• sweet short crust pastry
