THE RESULTS ARE IN
Health care organizations worldwide agree that proper hand washing can prevent the spread of infectious
diseases. In August 2020, after an exhaustive two-year process, renowned researchers at the University of
Arizona concluded that there is “no data to support any human health claims relative to hand dryers versus
paper towel use.” The scoping review in the work, Comparison of electric hand dryers and paper towels
for hand hygiene: a critical review of the literature, culled the current breadth of data, including published
studies, news reports and online content, seeking to uncover which hand drying method, hand dryers or paper
towels, is more hygienic and safer relative to human infection risks.
The overall findings concluded that hand dryers are equal to paper towels for hygienic hand drying.

WHAT IS AN EPD AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
An Environmental Product Declaration is a standardized way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product
by studying the raw materials and energy consumption during its production, use and disposal. For buyers and
specifiers, the EPDs are a disclosure tool that helps purchasers better understand a product’s sustainable qualities
and environmental repercussions so they can make more informed product selections.
To create an EPD, there must first exist Product Category Rules (PCR) which create testing guidelines and reporting
methods through industry consensus, thereby permitting buyers and specifiers to compare products, apples-toapples.
The corresponding EPDs provide insight on the environmental impact of products from cradle-to-grave.
In 2016, UL Environment (a business division of Underwriters’ Laboratories), published the hand dryer PCR,
a first for the industry and the first global standard for any industry. Excel Dryer was asked to chair the committee
to create the PCR, working in collaboration with UL and other leading hand dryer manufacturers, to achieve the
necessary industry consensus.

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) investigates a product’s total
environmental impact from time of manufacture (beginning
of life) to time of disposal (end of life). Excel Dryer had an
LCA Study conducted by Quantis, an international life cycle
assessment research firm, which was peer reviewed to ISO
14040 Standards. The study determined that when compared
to traditional electric hand dryers and paper towels (virgin
and 100% recycled content), XLERATOR reduces the Climate
Changing Score (Carbon Footprint) of hand drying by up to 75%.

Excel Hand Dryers offer a new Electrostatic HEPA Filtration System that
removes 99.999% of viruses and 99.97% of potentially present
bacteria at 0.3 microns from the airstream 2 and is the only one
with a washable pre-filter for reliable performance and extended
filter life. The Electrostatic HEPA Filtration System is available as an
optional feature on XLERATOR/XLERATOReco and ThinAir Hand Dryers
or can easily be retrofitted into existing XLERATOR/XLERATOReco units.

1.1” NOISE REDUCTION NOZZLE (1.1N)
Reduces the sound level by 9 decibels by significantly decreasing air
deflection noise while only increasing dry time by approximately 3 seconds.

corporate branding or environmental messaging. Our exclusive Kolorfusion digital image technology
