Filling the gap between
injectables and aesthetics
Topical aesthetic
treatments such as
microdermabrasion, laser
treatments, skin needling and
chemical peels work beautifully
with injectable treatments
such as mesotherapy, fillers
and neurotoxins. When the
two arenas of aesthetics join
forces, they complement each
other and provide a healthy,
natural result, assisting you to
be the best version of you, not
a different version of you.
If you have a lot of photoaging
– also known as sun
damage – and volume loss
and wrinkles from muscle
movement, the perfect synergy
of treatments will treat colour,
texture, tone and volume. It is
usually better to perform colour
correction first with either
peels, laser, IPL or diathermy,
and more often than not a
combination of these treatment
modalities.
When injectables are used
by a qualified and skilled
professional, fillers and
neuromodulators such as Botox
are a natural and safe way to
help men and women achieve
a more relaxed and youthful
appearance. Trying to turn
back the clock can also make a
person look significantly older
when performed incorrectly.
Fillers can be divided into
two main groups: hyaluronic
and non-hyaluronic acid types.
The most popular are the
hyaluronic acid fillers, where
they work much like a sponge,
binding with large amounts
of water and plumping up
the space into which they are
injected. As science has refined
over time, there are fillers that
are thicker or thinner. This then
determines where they are used
in certain areas of the face,
neck, chest or hands where
there is more volume loss.
Non-hyaluronic fillers, in part,
work by stimulating collagen
in the area into which they are
injected.
The most common areas for
The Local Voice Since 1991
fillers to be used are:
Nasojugal folds – the area in
our cheeks right under the eye;
Marionette lines – the lines
running from the corners of our
mouth down to our chin;
Nasolabial folds – the lines
running from the outside of the
nostrils to the corners of our
mouth; and
Lip Line and Body – this will
assist to add volume and
definition.
To maintain balance and
symmetry, overfilling the face
should be avoided. Often when
the face is overfilled, filled
without an artistic eye or the
incorrect filler is used, the
result is exactly the opposite
of enhancing a youthful
appearance. Thankfully, filler
can be dissolved, and a longterm
crisis does not need to be
lived with.
Neurotoxins, such as Botox
and Dysport, are used to
treat lines and wrinkles that
have been caused by deep
underlying muscle movement.
These injectables are temporary
and may last anywhere from
4 -12 weeks. The three most
common areas for treatment
with neurotoxins are:
1. Crow’s feet around the eye
area;
2. The horizontal lines on the
forehead;
3. The glabellar which is the
area between the eyebrows;
Other popular areas to be
treated are smoker’s lines
around the lips, excessive
sweating in the underarms,
hands and feet, migraines and
headaches, and jaw and teeth
grinding and clenching.
The frozen look can be the
result of neurotoxins being
overused. Too little brow
and forehead mobility can
make a face look severe and
certain facial features appear
exaggerated. It is always best
to start off with less, you can
always add more. Neurotoxins
cannot be dissolved like fillers,
they have to wear off.
Using skin boosters with
mesotherapy is an amazing
treatment assisting with
rejuvenating the skin from the
inside out. Unlike injecting
with fillers, mesotherapy with
various cocktails of boosters
for the skin does not add
volume or structure to the
face but instead skin vitality
and turgidity. Crepey, dull
and dehydrated skin benefits
greatly from mesotherapy
treatments.
The ‘Zoom Boom’ era has
increased demand for noninvasive
treatments and
‘tweakments’ combining
aesthetic and injectable
solutions to achieve skin
rejuvenation and results.
