KILU RESEARCHERS BEHIND REVOLUTIONARY DISCOVERY
A revolutionar method for synthesising electronics smallest structures, so
called nanowires, which is more than a hundred times faster, continous
and much cheaper has been developed through a collaboration between
researchers at the Centre for Analysis and Synthesis at the department of
chemistry (Martin Ek and Reine Wallenberg) and at Solid state physics. The

”LUNDAFORSKARE REVOLUTIONERAR” (Sydsvenskan)
NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE IN CHEMISTRY VISITS LUND
On December 14 Nobel prize laureate in chemistry, Brian Kobilka visits Lund
and gives a lecture with the title “Smart Receptors on cell Surfaces” at
Kårhuset, LTH, at 15.15.
VR GRANTS FOR INFRASTRUCTURE AT KILU
Reine Wallenberg was granted 900 000 SEK as a planning grant to continue
the work on a national infrastructure network coordinating the HREM labs
for materials research of five Swedish universities. ARTEMI (Atomic Resolu-
tion TEM Infrastructure network) will provide enhanced access of strategic
infrastructure to academic groups at all Swedish universities and to industry
groups. ARTEMI will coordinate new investments and develop characteriza-
tion techniques for excellence in materials research, with positive impact also
for energy/environment and the life sciences.

BEST DIPLOMA WORK 2012 TO LORETA BLLACI
Loreta Bllaci has been awarded Best Diploma Work 2012 “Ultrasound Sample
Handling for Rapid MALDI MS”, LTH, Lund University by BO RYDINS
STIFTELSE för vetenskaplig forskning.
A diploma work performed at the Divison for Pure and Applied Biochemistry
under the supervision of Prof. Staffan Nilsson, in collaboration with Prof.
James Friend (RMIT University, Australia), Sven Kjellström LU, and Prof. Lena
Eliasson CRC, LU, resulted for the first time in a unique hyphenation of the
Surface Acoustic Waves atomizer to MALDI MS.
The newly developed method has been successfully used in the rapid peptide/protein
MALDI MS profiling of living islets of Langerhans releaseate in
Type 2 Diabetes studies. Moreover, it allows for fast MALDI MS analysis of
small volumes of biofluid collected on a membrane.
This work was sent to Analytical Chemistry, the highest ranked Journal in
Analytical Chemistry (5.8) and accepted with minor revision.
RESEARCHERS MET THE INDUSTRY DURING AIMDAY MATERIALS
Several researchers from the department of chemistry participated in this
year’s AIMDAY Materials (Acadamy Industry Meeting Day).

HBTQ-NETWORK FOR EMPLOYEES AT LUND UNIVERSITY
In September the new Hbtq-network for employees at Lund University held
a start-up meeting and in October the department of chemistry organized a
seminar about ”HBT in everyday life” with Jonas Gardell as a guest lecturer.
Hanna Anderberg, PhD student in biochemistry, thinks these kinds of arrangements
are good because they interest people that normally aren’t
involved with these questions.
The new hbtq- network is an interest group for gay, bisexual, transgender

NEW PHD COURSE IN
”INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS”
A PhD course in ”Intermolecular Interactions”
(10 hp) will be given jointly by the Divisions
of Theoretical and Physical Chemistry.
The course starts on Jan 22, 2013, and will
run during 11 subsequent weeks (1 week
pause around Easter), with two double-hour
lectures per week.
Examination via hand-in exercises (every week).
The course will be based on J. Israelachvili:
”Intermolecular and Surface Forces”, 3rd edition,
complemented by lecture notes.

the current search system Summon. LUBsearch
works in the same way as Summon as
an first access point to all articles, journals,
theses and books available at the libraries.
