FALMOUTH CEMETERY
Located on the south-western tip of
England, Falmouth was an important Royal
Navy and Royal Naval Air Service base
during both World Wars. During the Second
World War, the famous Operation Chariot
commando raid on the docks at St. Nazaire
was launched from here. Today, Falmouth
Cemetery is the final resting place of almost
180 service personnel, including several
who died during the St. Nazaire raid.
During the World Wars, more than
400 service personnel were buried
here. Many had local connections
to Exeter, while others died in one
of the military hospitals established
in the city. You will also find a small
plot here that contains the graves
of 30 German servicemen, almost
all of whom were airmen who were
shot down over Exeter during the
Second World War (1939-45).
PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL
This is one of three great naval
memorials built by the CWGC in the
United Kingdom to commemorate the
missing of the Royal Navy from the
two World Wars. Over 23,000 service
personnel who have no known grave
but the sea are commemorated at
Plymouth.
PLYMOUTH (EFFORD) CEMETERY
Plymouth has been a major hub for the Royal Navy
for hundreds of years. Opened in 1907, Efford
Cemetery was used for service burials throughout
both World Wars. Today, you will find 450 war
graves here. Some casualties had loved ones who
lived locally, while others lie far from their homes
of Australia, Canada, South Africa and beyond.
SUTTON VENY (ST. JOHN)
CHURCHYARD
Located near Salisbury Plain (which was a
key military training ground from the late
1800s), Sutton Veny and the surrounding
area housed several large military camps
during the First World War (1914-18). This
idyllic churchyard is the final resting place of
over 160 service personnel, the majority of
whom served with the Australian forces.
