Across the United Kingdom there are war<br />

graves and memorials at over 12,000 locations.<br />

From towering and dramatic memorials<br />

which bear the names of tens of thousands of<br />

missing personnel, to small and intimate local<br />

churchyards where perhaps only one service<br />

person is commemorated, there is so much to<br />

discover.<br />

Across <strong>South</strong> <strong>West</strong>ern <strong>England</strong> the<br />

Commonwealth War Graves Commission<br />

(<strong>CWGC</strong>) commemorates more than 41,000<br />

service personnel at over 1,750 locations.<br />

Located on the south-western tip of<br />

<strong>England</strong>, Falmouth was an important Royal<br />

Navy and Royal Naval Air Service base<br />

during both World Wars. During the Second<br />

World War, the famous Operation Chariot<br />

commando raid on the docks at St. Nazaire<br />

was launched from here. Today, Falmouth<br />

Cemetery is the final resting place of almost<br />

180 service personnel, including several<br />

who died during the St. Nazaire raid.<br />

During the World Wars, more than<br />

400 service personnel were buried<br />

here. Many had local connections<br />

to Exeter, while others died in one<br />

of the military hospitals established<br />

in the city. You will also find a small<br />

plot here that contains the graves<br />

of 30 German servicemen, almost<br />

all of whom were airmen who were<br />

shot down over Exeter during the<br />

Second World War (1939-45).<br />

PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL<br />

This is one of three great naval<br />

memorials built by the <strong>CWGC</strong> in the<br />

United Kingdom to commemorate the<br />

missing of the Royal Navy from the<br />

two World Wars. Over 23,000 service<br />

personnel who have no known grave<br />

but the sea are commemorated at<br />

Plymouth.<br />

PLYMOUTH (EFFORD) CEMETERY<br />

Plymouth has been a major hub for the Royal Navy<br />

for hundreds of years. Opened in 1907, Efford<br />

Cemetery was used for service burials throughout<br />

both World Wars. Today, you will find 450 war<br />

graves here. Some casualties had loved ones who<br />

lived locally, while others lie far from their homes<br />

of Australia, Canada, <strong>South</strong> Africa and beyond.<br />

SUTTON VENY (ST. JOHN)<br />

CHURCHYARD<br />

Located near Salisbury Plain (which was a<br />

key military training ground from the late<br />

1800s), Sutton Veny and the surrounding<br />

area housed several large military camps<br />

during the First World War (1914-18). This<br />

idyllic churchyard is the final resting place of<br />

over 160 service personnel, the majority of<br />

whom served with the Australian forces.<br />
