INFORMATION<br />
During the First World War <strong>Malta</strong> was a vital<br />
base of operations and a medical hub which<br />
treated wounded soldiers brought here from<br />
across the Mediterranean.<br />
<strong>Malta</strong> was besieged for more than two years<br />
during the Second World War. More bombs<br />
were dropped on the island than on London<br />
during the Blitz. In recognition of their bravery<br />
and suffering, the people of <strong>Malta</strong> were<br />
awarded the George Cross.<br />

OF THESE INCREDIBLE PEOPLE, BOTH<br />
MILITARY AND CIVILIAN.<br />
Cemeteries in <strong>Malta</strong> are a uniquely beautiful<br />
and poignant mix of Commonwealth war<br />
graves (as well as burials from many other<br />
nations) and striking private headstones. With<br />
shallow earth and hard rock underneath, most<br />
burials are marked by fl at headstones bearing<br />
many names, so <strong>CWGC</strong> graves here look very<br />
different to those in other parts of the world.<br />

In the shadow of the<br />
ancient city of Mdina lies<br />
this beautiful, tranquil<br />
cemetery steeped in<br />
history. With over 1,400<br />
civilian and military<br />
graves, some of the<br />
headstones bear bullet<br />
damage, serving as a<br />
reminder of <strong>Malta</strong>’s<br />
suffering and resilience<br />
during the Second World<br />
War.<br />

Through the beautiful<br />
stone arch lies one of the<br />
most moving cemeteries<br />
in <strong>Malta</strong> and the fi nal<br />
resting place of over<br />
1,000 casualties from<br />
the two World Wars,<br />
as well as many civilian<br />
memorials.<br />

Over 1,400 servicemen<br />
are buried here.<br />
Many of those<br />
commemorated were<br />
from the Gallipoli<br />
campaign of 1915–<br />
1916. The memorial<br />
wall bears the names<br />
of casualties from<br />
what is now India,<br />
Pakistan and Nepal,<br />
as well as members of<br />
the Gurkha regiments.<br />
MALTA MEMORIAL<br />
Ir-Re Dwardu VII,<br />
Floriana, Valetta<br />
Unveiled by HM<br />
Queen Elizabeth II in<br />
1954, this memorial<br />
to the missing<br />
commemorates<br />
almost 2,300 airmen<br />
of the British and<br />
Commonwealth<br />
Air Forces with no<br />
known grave.<br />

Japanese Memorial<br />
Nestled between the<br />
trees you will fi nd the<br />
Japanese Memorial. You<br />
are likely to see many<br />
tokens and gifts left here<br />
by Japanese tourists who<br />
visit to honour their dead.<br />
