CEMETERY
INFORMATION
During the First World War Malta was a vital
base of operations and a medical hub which
treated wounded soldiers brought here from
across the Mediterranean.
Malta was besieged for more than two years
during the Second World War. More bombs
were dropped on the island than on London
during the Blitz. In recognition of their bravery
and suffering, the people of Malta were
awarded the George Cross.
CWGC COMMEMORATES MANY
INDIVIDUALS AT FOURTEEN SITES
ACROSS THE ISLAND. WE PROUDLY
CARE FOR AND HONOUR THE MEMORY
OF THESE INCREDIBLE PEOPLE, BOTH
MILITARY AND CIVILIAN.
Cemeteries in Malta are a uniquely beautiful
and poignant mix of Commonwealth war
graves (as well as burials from many other
nations) and striking private headstones. With
shallow earth and hard rock underneath, most
burials are marked by fl at headstones bearing
many names, so CWGC graves here look very
different to those in other parts of the world.
