COTTESMORE (ST NICHOLAS)
CHURCHYARD
In March 1938, the Royal Air Force established
an airfield and training centre at Cottesmore
and space in this churchyard was put aside for
military burials. In 1939, Britain went to war.
By the end of the conflict 88 Commonwealth
servicemen had been laid at rest here. Their
average age is just 22.
During the First World War, Cannock Chase was
an important military hub and was home to
bustling military camps, hospitals, and training
areas. 400 British, New Zealand and German
soldiers who died while serving or imprisoned
here were laid to rest in this cemetery. Located
nearby is Cannock Chase German War
Cemetery. Established in the 1960’s, it is the
largest German military cemetery in the United
Kingdom with over 5,000 burials.
