photo did not indicate that Joy
jumped through any window.

all. Ruth asked questions,
she could not get clear

Kenyans heed a distressed
mother’s call
When the Albanian police
and the media visited Joy
apartment after the attack, it
was a total mess. Partly eaten
food was strewn all over the
floor and some was found on
her bed. However, there were
no suspects detained
from the incident. No
CCTV footage was handed
over, and no case files were
made available. However,
Ruth has a somewhat more
detailed story of what
transpired days before
Joy was attacked. That
very evening of the attack,
Ruth was on the phone with
Joy. Joy having her dinner.
Abruptly, Joy’s phone just
went off. Ruth never heard
from Joy again. Hours later
the next day, Ruth was told by
Joy’s employer that Joy was
found unconscious outside her
apartment and taken to a local
hospital. As the news spread
in the diaspora community,
Ruth relocated temporarily
to Albania to care for her
daughter who was in a coma.
The world media remained
conveniently quiet about Joy’s
story but Kenyans from all
over the world responded to
Joy’s mother’s call to help.
The story soon went viral on
social media. Had Kenyans
not raised the siren Joy’s
Kenyan Solidarity Abroad
Kenyans abroad are a special
breed indeed. As Joy’s story
gained momentum, hundreds
of well-wishers from all over
the Diaspora rallied behind
Joy. In Europe, Margaret Rulf
(Mudge), based in Germany,
urged all Kenyans and wellwishers
to come forward
and support Joy. A Kenyan
living in Albania called Suzzie
Lavi provided Ruth with
translation, transportation,
and food. In the USA, the
Chairman of Kenya Diaspora
USA, Dr. Marasa, appealed
to every Kenyan in the US to
donate at least $5 dollars to
this cause. His sentiments
were echoed by the Secretary
for the Association of
Kenyans in Diaspora, Sheila
Maonga. Kenyans everywhere
