54 Years with
The Dietert Center
In August 1969 at the age of 73, Harry Dietert
purchased a small house on Jefferson Street in
Kerrville to set up a community activity center for
senior citizens.
Working with Kerrville State Hospital’s Volunteer
Services Council, Mr. Dietert organized
the Dietert Senior Citizen’s Center.
Their goal was to address the challenge of leisure
time and the desire of older citizens to involve
themselves in helping others.
Mr. Dietert envisioned the center as a place where
older adults in the Hill Country could “stake their
claim for the gold of their golden years” in an
atmosphere that promoted fellowship,
support and caring.
True to Harry Dietert’s original vision, we are
a volunteer-driven, community-based nonprofit
organization that helps men and women maintain
active, healthy and independent lives in their older
years.

Safety/Gun
*Buying Your First Handgun
Instructor: Larry Arnold
This class won't tell you what handgun you should
buy; it's about helping you make up your own mind,
based on your needs. It covers four secrets that nobody
remembers to tell new shooters. The interactive
classroom session will help you identify what type
of handguns are available, learn how to shop for a
handgun, and find training on how to fire it. In the
hands on session at the shooting range, you'll get to
shoot several different types of handguns and learn
how to handle them safely. Shooting and shopping,
how can you pass that up? During the two-hour range
session, students may bring their own handgun with
their own ammunition, which must pass inspection
before being fired. You are encouraged to bring your
own ear and eye protection.

and visitors appreciate; and that dog-friendly
businesses expect.
Topics include respecting space and setting
boundaries; learning skills such as SIT, WATCH,
RECALL (Come or Here), etc.; walking nicely on

*How to Grow Healthy Plants
Instructor: Mike McGinnis, Ph.D.
Plants can become members of a family just like pets.
Plants require attention, proper nutrients for good
health, and an environment that supports their needs.
Like humans and pets, plants can have health issues
caused by nutritional deficiencies, as well as infections
caused by insects, bacteria, and fungi. The purpose of
the presentation is to address the requirements
necessary for indoor and outdoor plants to be healthy
so that their beauty can be enjoyed.

*World of Beautiful Mushrooms and
Other Fungi
Instructor: Mike McGinnis, Ph.D.
The Hill Country is home to many different kinds of
mushrooms, toad stools and puff balls. Aesthetically,
they are among the most beautiful things that we often
encounter in woody areas following a rain. The
identification of these fungi is an art that is easily
learned. Great care must be exercised to distinguish
poisonous types of mushrooms from those that are not.
Some fungi have had a major influence on people and
our culture. Some examples include hallucinogenic
mushrooms, truffle hunting, the cause of the Great
Potato Famine, and the Salem Witch Trials. The
purpose of the presentation is to explain how these
fungi are identified and what their influence has been.
