Saturday program. We have seven 

intriguing classes for you, all using your 

hands and minds. 

Our new Writing Academy continues to 

present a series of core classes to teach 

both the basics and nuances of writing. 

There is a class for every level of writer, so 

take the plunge. 

The Adult School’s Community Partner 

this quarter is the Midpeninsula 

Community Media Center. We are both 

focused on supporting the community.

I’m was in the Peruvian Navy and came to America to study 

with the American Navy. I'm a Radar Engineer and Engineer of 

Telecommunications. 

I have a lot of experience with ESL because I studied the Beginning 

High level two times with teacher Susan Cole and teacher Mary Bazigos. 

It is the general opinion of different people and classmates that the 

teachers of ESL at the Adult School are excellent. 

Now I study at the next level, ESL Low Intermediate. Last week I 

started Fundamentals of Writing I. I hope to improve my writing, 

because I want and need to find a good job and go to a short-time college 

to refresh my professional skills and give a better life for my family.”

WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES: 

Beginning and Continuing 

Instructor: Kay Culpepper 

Begin at the beginning! Then continue to discover the 

magical versatility that only watercolor can offer. We will 

practice skills such as color mixing, wet in wet painting, 

mingling, value studies, glazing, washes, etc. Apply these 

techniques to still life and landscape painting. Go to

WATERCOLOR DESIGN AND CREATIVITY: 

Intermediate/Advanced 

Instructor: Ferenc Besze , 

 

Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of watercolor techniques. 

Develop your personal watercolor style with an emphasis 

on composition and design principles. Use your talents in a 

wide variety of subject matters such as landscapes, still life, 

portraits and cityscapes. Bring your own setup including a 

palette, brushes, paint and paper, and any preferred 

references.

Discover your artistic talents with oil or acrylic paints as a

Everyone has a story to tell, but how to 

start? Students will be guided through 

small group and individual exercises to 

transform a chosen life happening into a 

compelling narrative. Bring raw materials 

such as writings, photos, drawings, recipes 

or newspaper clippings, and a few key 

reflections to weave into a draft mock-up of 

your own personal story. You will be ready 

to develop your story into a scrapbook or 

an online book at the end of the session. 

Ms. Humburg is a volunteer oral historian 

with Stanford Historical Society and a visual 

storyteller in local schools.

are welcome!

RELAXING BATH PRODUCTS

Need to take time out of your hectic schedule to pamper 

yourself with a relaxing bath? Why not add a bit of luxury 

to take your bath to the next level by adding 100% natural 

bath salts, bath bombs and milk bath. All of these products 

are easy to make for yourself or to give as gifts. Students will 

leave this class with an 8 ounce bottle of bath salts, several 

bath bombs, and a 3 ounce container of a milk bath recipe 

plus an informational handout. Students must bring a mixing 

bowl and spoon to class. A materials fee of $20 (cash) is payable 

to the instructor at class.

BIRDING BASICS 

Instructor: Anne Creevy

Prerequisite: None 

Good birders should know about bird taxonomy, adaptations, 

field marks, habitats and GISS - including our general 

impressions of the sizes, shapes, postures, flight patterns and 

behaviors of birds. We will focus on identifying pelicans, 

terns, gulls, diverse water birds including swimmers, waders 

and, briefly, shorebirds, plus neighborhood birds to be found 

here during the winter. Practice using binoculars and field 

guides on four Saturday morning half-day field trips with 

dates to be announced at the first class.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS 

OF EFFECTIVE EMAIL

This three-hour workshop takes the mystery out of writing 

effective emails. What should a subject line include? What 

about the first sentence of an email—or the last? What are 

the characteristics of emails that are actually read? These plus 

many more useful tips that you can put to use right away!

Excellent Career Training—Affordable and Fast! 

The following programs are offered in partnership with Boston Reed College as part of a 

local Adult Education Regional Collaboration. These programs are designed to prepare 

participants for career training in healthcare. Most programs cost $2,995 or less. Course 

fees include textbooks, classroom materials, externship (where applicable) and certificate 

of completion. 

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANTS assist the 

physician with procedures, caring for patients, 

performing simple laboratory tests and administering 

medications. A Clinical Medical Assistant can 

pursue employment as a healthcare professional 

in a physician’s office or clinical setting. This 

course provides an excellent training opportunity 

for anyone with a desire to work in the thriving 

healthcare field helping people. 134 hours (including 

42 hours online training)/60 externship hours.

viewer downloads. A practice podcast will be created, with 

student participation, then broadcast during the class. Sample

drive. The instructor is a media specialist with a background 

in television production, web design, Photography and Visual 

Effects. He currently teaches classes at KMVT in Mountain 

View, an affiliated station of the Midpeninsula Community

TESTING SCHEDULE FOR NEW ESL STUDENTS 

AND NEW ENROLLMENT POLICY 

All students new to the Palo Alto Adult School English as a Second Language (ESL) program must 

take a placement test before attending the classes listed in this section. The testing dates and times 

for the Winter quarter are listed below. Please call (650) 329-3752 to make an appointment 

to take the test in the morning or evening. 

The test takes approximately three hours. Please be on time and bring your address, phone number 

and emergency contact information. Students wishing to attend class in the Winter 

quarter must enroll for an entire eight week session. The Winter quarter will begin 

on Monday, January 14 and end on Thursday, March 7. (Note: Students who leave 

the class before the end of the session may not re-enroll until the beginning of the

The new PAAS Writing Academy includes a series of core classes (Fundamentals of Writing) 

designed to address the basic writing needs of our students. Whether you need help writing 

clear sentences, coherent paragraphs or an eloquent essay, you will find a class that meets 

your needs. The classes are offered on the same day and at the same time so you can move up 

or down a level if you feel a class is too hard or too easy for you. Each class can be repeated 

multiple times for additional practice opportunities. Students can earn Certificates of 

Achievement and Proficiency in the Fundamentals classes by completing in-class 

assessments at the end of the quarter. 

Students who need more individual feedback and a guided and structured environment to

Learn traditional and contemporary ikebana. Each week 

students will complete one or two designs, then bring them 

home to display. Bring sturdy garden scissors, a pyrex bowl 

and a large pin frog for practice. Information will be given on 

what additional ikebana equipment you will need and where 

to get it. A $100 flower material fee is payable to the instructor, 

or students can bring their own flowers. The instructor has more

The winter dormant season is our best chance to prevent 

and control garden diseases. Learn what safe sprays will

summer bulb selection. Beginning gardeners gain confidence

Instructor: Palo Alto Police Department Staff 

The Palo Alto Police Department, in partnership with the Palo Alto 

Adult School, offers the Parent Project. This national program was 

created for parents with strong-willed teens. Topics addressed include: 

school behavior, attendance and grades; reducing arguing and 

conflict; understanding why teens do what they do; identifying gang 

involvement; music and media influences; friendships and dating; and 

alcohol and drug use. Cost is $120 per person or $155 couple. Class size

and Palo Alto Adult School share a common

appreciation and education. The Media Center 

offers individuals and groups the training and 

production equipment to create and distribute
