DEAR SAINTS FANS, IT’S VERY EXCITING TO WELCOME
YOU ALL TO ST MARY’S FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS
NEW SEASON, WHERE WE HOPE TO CREATE LOTS OF
POSITIVE MEMORIES OVER THE NEXT NINE MONTHS.
It was amazing to get
off to a winning start
in our opening game,
a tricky game, against
Sheffield Wednesday.
Facing a newlypromoted
team away
from home in front of a
big crowd at a ground
with the atmosphere
that Hillsborough
brings, it was a good
test of what’s to come
in the Championship.
I thought our players
stepped up to the
challenge brilliantly,
I was really proud
of them. They really
carried out what we
wanted them to do
and what we’d been
working on throughout
the pre-season.
It’s such a different
way of playing to what
so many of them have
been used to, and it
takes a lot of courage
to do it effectively, but
I thought the way we
kept the ball, moved
it quickly and created
chances was really
encouraging, whilst
restricting them to only
one shot on target.
Of course it was
frustrating that they
scored from that
one shot, from a setpiece,
but we kept
playing our football
and got our rewards
with Ché’s late goal.
I really enjoyed the
way we controlled
the nine minutes of
stoppage time at
the end of the game
06 « SAINTS « we march on

without any alarms
at all, it was excellent
and testament to the
lads’ courage and how
much they'd made
Sheffield Wednesday
work out of possession
throughout the game.
The midweek trip
to Gillingham in the
Carabao Cup left me
with a very different
feeling. It was a
performance that
lacked the intensity
and courage that
you need to compete
against anybody,
and the best team
won on the night.
There were still plenty
of positives, including
three debuts and
some really good
signs from our young
players – they were
the standouts for
“Your support on
a Friday night in
Sheffield,
when the game
was on TV, was
outstanding.
Hopefully you
could see a
glimpse into the
future of the way
we want to play
and how it can be
effective.”
us on an otherwise
disappointing night.
Today we welcome
Norwich City, my
former club who I hold
in the highest regard.
I absolutely loved
my time there as a
player, and wish them
well for the season
ahead. Today our only
focus is to produce a
performance like we
did at Hillsborough,
win the game and
hopefully entertain
you along the way.
SAINTS COMPLETE
LUMLEY SIGNING
Southampton Football
Club is pleased to
confirm the signing
of experienced
goalkeeper Joe Lumley.
The 28-year-old free
agent has joined on a
contract until the end
of the season, adding
additional strength to
the Men’s First Team
goalkeeping group.
Lumley, whose deal
with Middlesbrough
expired in the summer,
arrives at St Mary’s
with 224 senior career
appearances to his
name, 42 of which
came during his loan
spell at Reading last
season.
Director of Football
Jason Wilcox (pictured
with Lumley) said: “Joe
has a lot of experience
in the Championship
and will be a good
addition to what is
already a strong stable
of goalkeepers here.
“Willy Caballero moved
on in the summer, so
08 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
it was important we
reinforced things a
little bit, and Joe fits the
bill well as someone
who is at a good
point in his career, but
who we also feel can
develop further under
the coaching of Dean
Thornton.”
Joe Lumley, who has
taken the number
13 shirt, said: "I'm
delighted to sign for
what is a massive club.
It's obviously come
down from the Premier
League and looking to
get back this season,
and hopefully I can
show what I can do
here and be a big part
of that.
"Dean was my goalie
coach when I was in
the youth team at QPR,
so I know him really
well and the way he
works. I know that he
pushes his goalies to
be the best they can
be. I’m really looking
forward to getting
back working with him.”

LIVRAMENTO
MAKES
NEWCASTLE
MOVE
Tino Livramento
has completed
a transfer to
Newcastle United.
The 20-year-old
right-back departs
after two seasons
at St Mary’s, in
which he made
34 appearances,
following a
significant offer
from the Magpies.
Although
disappointed to
lose Livramento,
the club chose to
accept Newcastle’s
latest bid as it both
represented fair
value for a player of
his ability while the
fee will also support
the wider rebuilding
project within the
squad this summer.
The club wishes Tino
every success for
the future and looks
forward to seeing
what he achieves.
STEPHENS SIGNS
NEW TWO-YEAR
CONTRACT
Southampton Football
Club is delighted
to announce Jack
Stephens has signed a
new two-year contract.
The 29-year-old
has put pen to
paper on the new
deal, extending his
commitment to the
club which stretches
back to 2011.
Making his debut as a
17-year-old, Stephens
has gone on to make
152 appearances for
Saints and has already
become an integral
part of Russell Martin’s
squad.
Jack Stephens said:
"I’m very pleased. It
was nice to get it all
sorted before the
season started and
just allows me to
focus on the football
and hopefully have a
positive season.
"I think over the
summer there was a
lot of uncertainty over
what was going on.
But I had some good
conversations with
the manager and he
made it clear that he
wanted me to stay
and I've loved working
with him these first few
weeks.
“I'm really confident
that we're going to
have a good season,
so it was an easy
decision for me to sign
the contract and I'm
really happy.”

SAINTS RAMPANT IN PRE-SEASON
AGAINST BILLERICAY
Southampton FC
Women made a
triumphant return
to action on the
south coast for last
Sunday’s penultimate
pre-season friendly,
beating tier-three side
Billericay Town 14-1 at
AFC Totton.
It took Saints a while
to find their rhythm,
with Billericay looking
like stiff opposition and
closing down any real
opportunities in the
first 15 minutes.
A new-look Saints squad at AFC Totton
However, it wasn’t long
before Marieanne
Spacey-Cale’s side
began to show their
style, with new signing
Molly Pike breaking
the deadlock, stealing
the ball off her
defender’s foot before
dispatching into the
top corner.
Just after the half-hour
mark, Pike was able to
find the back of the net
again with a similarly
unstoppable strike
from inside the box
for 2-0, before Katie
Wilkinson lobbed the
keeper shortly after.
Lexi Lloyd-Smith then
hit a low effort past the
keeper to put Saints
safely in the driving
seat in the 35th minute.
As the end of the first
half approached, there
was no let up in the
home side’s attacking
onslaught, as Saints
began to play with
even more confidence
and freedom up top.
Alice Griffiths slotted
home from a Wynne
ball across to make
it five, before she
returned the favour;
Wynne sliding in at the
back post to convert.
Molly Pike also sealed
her hat-trick five
minutes into added
time, once again
beating the keeper
with a neat effort,
making it 7-0 going in
for half time.
Despite the first half
dominance of their
Captain Rosie Parnell gets on the scoresheet with a wonderful headed effort
opponents, it was
Billericay who scored
first in the second
period, as their number
9 flicked a ball over the
onrushing Beth Howard
in the Saints goal
following some sloppy
defending.
The first change of the
day saw hat-trick hero
Molly Pike replaced by
stalwart Lucia Kendall
in the 49th minute. A
key goalscoring threat
during the promotion
season, Kendall made
her intentions clear
with almost her first
touch of the game,
racing through to
collect a neat ball
and tapping past the
keeper with the outside
of the boot.
Wilkinson recorded the
second hat-trick of the
day in the 56th minute,
as pressure up top saw
her with enough space
on the ball to slot into
the bottom corner.
Saints continuied to
ramp up the pressure,
and soon Kendall was
once again on the
scoresheet with one
of the best finishes of
the day. Off balance
and under pressure,
she latched onto
a punched keeper
clearance, slamming
an effort high into the
net.
Two more substitutions
in the 64th minute
saw Laura Rafferty
and Paige Peake
enter the fray, with the
hardworking Megan
Collett and Chloe
Peplow making way.
The fans especially
enjoyed goal number
12, as captain Rosie
Parnell rose highest
at the back post to
head over the keeper’s
outstretched gloves in
the 67th minute.
Lloyd-Smith continued
her fine pre-season
form, netting the home
side’s 13th goal in the
87th minute, racing
forward into the box
and slamming her shot
into the top of the net
from what looked like
an impossibly tight
angle.
The final goal of the
game was scored by
substitute Kendall, as
unselfish play from
Wilkinson saw her
square the ball to her
strike partner, who
made no mistake in
dispatching the finish.

RUSSELL
MARTIN
THERE IS A RELAXED, WELCOMING MANNER TO
RUSSELL MARTIN, THE MAN CHARGED WITH LEADING
SOUTHAMPTON’S MISSION TO RETURN TO THE PREMIER
LEAGUE. THE SAINTS BOSS HASN’T HAD AN EASY RIDE
TO GET TO THIS POINT – THROUGH LIFE OR THROUGH
FOOTBALL – AND INSIDE HIM BURNS A DESIRE TO
SUCCEED THAT PROPELLED HIM FROM NON-LEAGUE
TO THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE AS A PLAYER. NOW HE’S
READY TO PROVE HIMSELF ALL OVER AGAIN…
“Don’t mistake
my kindness for
weakness,” Al
Capone, the notorious
American gangster
whose life has been
the subject of many
Hollywood scripts,
once said.
It was a quote recycled
by Simone Inzaghi, the
Italian manager who
guided Inter to last
season’s Champions
League final, when
pressed on whether he
was “too nice” to lead
international players.
Inzaghi, though
never chasing the
spotlight, saw his
impressive exploits
as a player with Lazio
overshadowed by
elder brother Filippo,
a prolific and popular
striker who plundered
14 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
more than 300 goals in
an exceptional career
littered with Serie A
titles, Champions
League triumphs and
even a World Cup
winner’s medal.
Many in Italy would
argue Simone was
the more talented
player, but “Pippo” had
an eye for goal and
predatory instincts
inside the penalty area
to rival the greatest
marksmen. When you
hear the name Inzaghi,
he’s the one you think
of.
Russell Martin grew up
as a determined player
overshadowed by
others. Whether it was
his brothers, who were
“much more gifted”, in
his words, than he was,
or teammates who
took the glory, Martin
was never the star
and had to fight for his
successes, of which
there would be plenty.
With more than 500
league games, five
promotions and 29
international caps
to his name in a 15-
year playing career,
Martin didn’t do badly
for a man who has
always felt pressure to
perform, and a need to
work relentlessly at his
craft.
“My whole career has
been built on proving
people wrong,” he
reflects. Growing up in
East Sussex, Martin was
never deemed good
enough for his county
team, or for hometown
club Brighton.

“That was always
a sense of
disappointment for
me. I would’ve loved to
play for them – from
very early on it was a
dream.
“Back then you could
have two teams
because one was in
Division Two and one
was in the Premier
League, so I supported
Spurs and Brighton.
The ultimate aim was
to play for Brighton
and then play for
Spurs,” he smiles. As a
boy with a dream, it all
felt so straightforward
at the time.
Instead he took
a different route.
Alongside studying
at College for his A
Levels, Martin worked
two jobs. He was up at
4am cleaning pubs,
and in the evenings
he worked in the local
Spar just over the road
from home, where he
lived with his brothers.
His parents had moved
away.
“Those were the
toughest two years of
my life,” he says. But he
wouldn’t change it. “I
had a perspective on
reality.”
Despite all those
commitments in his
life, and looking out
for his four brothers,
including foster brother
Rob, Martin always
found time for football.
He was training with
non-league Lewes
and playing for the
England Colleges team
when he agreed a
scholarship in America.
“I was going to go
there, and then went
on trial at Wycombe
and signed for three
months, non-contract
professional forms,
which killed the
America thing, but it
was a risk I wanted to
take,” he explains. After
being overlooked by
Brighton, this felt like
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 15
his last shot at making
it in the Football
League.
“It was a really difficult
period, but I was so
grateful for it that by
the time I actually
started playing
professional football
I had nothing but
gratitude. I just wanted
to work as hard as I
possibly could. I just
had excitement and
curiosity, wanting to
learn and wanting to
be better. I think that’s
probably what ended
up getting me so far.”
Wycombe were in
League Two, where
they would stay
throughout Martin’s
four seasons as a
player, but by the end
he was an established
starter, making the
jump to League One
to join Peterborough in
2008.
In his first season at
the higher level, Martin
was made captain at
22 and led Posh to the
Championship for the
first time in 15 years.
“My whole career has
been based on ‘go
to League Two, play,
people think you’re not
good enough to go
again, go to League
One…’ and every time
I got there, I thought ‘I
can actually do it’.
“I’d captained every
team, as a kid, that I

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 17
played in. Even teams
when I played in the
year above.” Where
do those leadership
instincts come from?
“Probably the role I
played in my family
growing up, a little bit,
I had to try and look
after people.
“I grew up in a
fairly tough place –
definitely with a tough
family.” Martin revealed
in an interview last
season that his dad
suffered with gambling
addiction, and his
family had to move
home when he was
eight because of
spiralling losses.
“I think the biggest
thing I learned was
understanding people,
picking up certain
things from people
and energy, all that
stuff. It came naturally
to me when I played
in a team. I enjoy
responsibility, I still do
– that’s why I’m doing
the job I’m doing now,
probably.”
With Peterborough
struggling in the
Championship, Martin
returned to League
One to join Norwich,
who had just been
relegated to the third
tier for the first time
in half a century. It
would prove a match
made in heaven, but
only thanks to his
decision to turn down
the chance to live his
childhood dream.
“I was leaving
Peterborough and
I was going to go
back to Brighton,” he
picks up the story. “I
was going to play for
my hometown club,
which was something I
wanted to do, and then
Paul (Lambert, then
Norwich manager)
rung me. He found out
I might be leaving and
going there.
“They had Iñigo
Calderón on trial at
Norwich and I was
going to Brighton. Then
I went to Norwich and
he ended up playing
for Brighton!”
Calderón would prove
a roaring success
on the south coast,
helping the Seagulls
soar from League
One to Championship
promotion contenders,
but Martin went one
better, as the Canaries
flew straight through to

the Premier League in
two seasons.
A third promotion
would follow in 2014/15,
as captain under
Alex Neil after a first
relegation of Martin’s
career, but it was
Lambert, who had
previously managed
the Saints boss at
Wycombe, who started
the club’s resurrection.
“As soon as Paul rung,
the lure of home was
big, but the lure of
playing for him again,
the aura he had, I
loved playing for him,
so he was massive for
us,” he says.
“I went there and it was
massive expectation
playing in front of
25,000 people all
of a sudden with a
manager I trusted, who
I really loved, who I
probably played some
of my best football for.
“I had kids there, I felt
like such a big part
of the culture – not
just on the pitch but
with the staff, with the
players, had some
brilliant times with
three promotions, two
relegations, some
tough times as well,
but I just felt like it was
a great place to live
and I felt like such a
part of something. I felt
like I belonged there.
“I loved it. I’ve got
nothing but good things
18 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
to say about it. It had to
come to an end, which
it did, everything does,
and I really struggled
with that for the first few
months after I left there.
I didn’t want to go back
– it was just too painful
for me.”
It speaks volumes of
Martin’s affection for
today’s visitors that it
took a full season for
him to return to the
scene of his fondest
football memories,
where he raised a
family and became a
cult hero dubbed “the
Norfolk Cafu” for his
tireless running up and
down the right flank.
When he did go back,
for his Testimonial in
2019, it was a night
to savour alongside
a host of Norwich
legends and former
teammates, as Martin
and Wes Hoolahan
captained the sides
in front of a crowd
of nearly 20,000 at
Carrow Road.
Martin and Lambert
remain close, 11 years
since they last worked
together, but as a
manager the 37-yearold
is doing things in
his own way.
After spells with
Rangers and Walsall,
the former Scotland
international cut his
teeth in management
at MK Dons, the
club where he had
just called time on
his playing days
after promotion
number five.
His possession-heavy
approach, by his own
admission at odds with
how he played for the
majority of his career,
was evident from the
start. Only Manchester
City and Barcelona
had a higher average
possession in Europe
than the Dons in his
one full season in
charge, which included
a goal scored after 56
consecutive passes –
a sequence spanning

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 19
Wembley memories: Celebrating his favourite
promotion with Norwich (left) and facing
Wayne Rooney for Scotland (below).
more than three
minutes of play.
Two summers ago,
Martin’s career took
him to Swansea,
who pointed to his
“attractive, attacking
style” as a seamless
transition from
Graham Potter and
Steve Cooper before
him, and Roberto
Martínez, Brendan
Rodgers and Michael
Laudrup before that,
who have helped
redefine the club’s
image since the turn of
the century.
But Martin is more than
a purist. He’s a people
person. Relaxed and
engaging company,
he makes time for
everyone.
It was noticeable
how quickly he
learned the names
of staff members at
Staplewood, some of
whom have been given
nicknames created by
him. He wants a family
feel, and has a gift for
making you feel part
of it.
“I care about people,”
it’s a natural thing,
he says. “Hopefully,
even in the short time
here, the players will
see that. That’s why
leaving Swansea and
leaving MK before
that was really painful

for me, because I get
connected to people. I
love working with them.
“I was the same when I
was growing up, trying
to look after people
and help as many
people as I could.”
His latest job sees
Martin inherit a
scenario he’s lived
through before. Of the
quintet of promotions
he achieved as a
player, the one that
ranks above the others
was won at the first
attempt after Norwich’s
first relegation from
the Premier League.
“Because of the pain
you went through
the year before,” he
explains. “The first one
was amazing because
it was so unexpected,
but to do it when
there’s a pressure on
you and you’ve been
part of the relegation
the year before, so you
can make up for it a
little bit…” he pauses.
“Best feeling ever.”
20 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
At 37, Martin is the
second-youngest
manager in the
Championship, born
four months before
Ipswich boss Kieran
McKenna, but that’s
not to say he lacks
experience.
The man charged with
leading Saints’ revival
has seen most of what
football has to throw
at you – at every level
from non-league to
international – and
has identified a fast
start as key to his
new club’s promotion
prospects.
“We need to get back
to winning games and
having a mentality that
we turn into winners,”
he states. “The way
we’re playing takes a
lot of time, a lot of work,
a lot of patience, but
finding a way to win
during that and having
the tools to win during
those games early on
in the season could be
really important.
Nathan Tella runs to
celebrate with his new
boss after Saints’ first
goal of the season. Left:
Enjoying a deserved win
at Hillsborough.
“Burnley did that. They
were a really different
animal at the end of the
season than they were
at the start, but they
found ways to win early
on whilst they were
building and improving,
so we have to do the
same – it’s that simple.”
Whilst targeting a good
start is no different to
his 23 Championship
contemporaries, in
Saints’ case, Martin
says, it’s about shaking
off the Premier League
hangover – just as
Burnley did under new
management last
season, and just as his
Norwich side did when
he led them to playoff
glory in 2015 on his
favourite day in football.
“I sensed the
disappointment and
the feeling everyone

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 21
had in the first few
days,” he recalls
of his first week at
Staplewood. “The
unknown and the lack
of certainty you have
after all that, people
being made redundant,
it affects everyone.”
“I was the captain
when we got relegated
and, fortunately, I was
still the captain when
we got promoted, so
you feel such a huge
burden and weight of
responsibility.
“Then you see people
losing their jobs and it
hits home. You’re the
guys that have ended
up costing people
their jobs. That’s part
and parcel of football,
unfortunately.
“We took too long
to click into gear at
Norwich, or we would
have got promoted
automatically, so we
ended up doing it via
the play-offs, which
was incredible, but
there was too much
disappointment, even
in the first few weeks of
training.
“The parallels are
that you have a great
club – Norwich was a
great club with great
people at that time,
and there’s some
brilliant people here –
and everyone now is
geared up to get back
there as quickly as
possible and make up
for last season.”
His sons grew up
wearing the yellow
and green, but Martin
insists there will be no
divided loyalties in the
family this afternoon.
“They still end up
getting sent the
[Norwich] kits from
friends, but they
support wherever we
are. They’re the biggest
Southampton fans
ever now,” he enthuses.
“My boys want all the
kits – they’ve got the
home kit and tracksuit.
I’m being pressured
into buying them the
away kit now!”
It’s no surprise that
Martin wants everyone
on this journey – kids
included – but only if
they’re “all in”, as he
puts it. His reaction to
the shock Carabao
Cup defeat at
Gillingham this week
showed a ruthless
streak, while his path
through life and
football paints a desire
to succeed that still
burns inside.
Saints may not be The
Untouchables just yet,
but don’t be fooled.
He’s here to win.

SAINTS ACADEMY ALUMNI
As part of our ongoing
support and after
care programme for
Academy players,
approximately 18
months ago we
launched our Alumni
programme.
This allows players
to reach out for
assistance on any
matter and maintain
links with the club.
Since launching the
programme we have
developed a quarterly
newsletter that keeps
ex-players informed of
events at the club, as
well as offering them
a chance to apply for
a pair of match tickets
for each home game.
The response to
the newsletter and
tickets has been
encouraging and
we have now moved
the programme on
to a new level by
inducting players
back in to a Hall Of
Fame. This recognises
James White
while part of Saints
Academy, and also
for the work he does
to promote his charity
and his excellent and
positive outlook on
life. Ben has been
recognised by the
Premier League, too,
and will be awarded
the PL Alumni Award for
2023 later this month
at a ceremony in
Manchester
achievements away
from Southampton FC.
The first two inductees
are Ben Cull and
James White.
BEN CULL
Ben was with us until
he was 19 and in that
time was diagnosed
with cancer in one of
his knees. He had to
undergo surgery for a
full knee replacement
and had to retire
from the game. Ben
has subsequently
undergone
numerous bouts of
chemotherapy but
unfortunately the
cancer has returned.
Ben is being awarded
this cap as recognition
for his achievements
JAMES WHITE
James left us when
he was 19 and initially
took a different career
path as he completed
a four-year degree
course at St Leo’s
University in Tampa,
Florida. Since returning
to the Academy,and
with the club support,
James has completed
his goalkeeper
coaching badges.
James initially utilised
these skills to work
back with us at SFC
but has now moved
on to become the
goalkeeping coach for
Reading Women and is
also now helping with
coaching at the FA
with England Women
Under-18s.
Congratulations to
both former players.
We will be inducting
further players into the
scheme in the near
future.

STANDS IN NORTHLANDS ROAD.
Unfortunately, it is
almost 100 per cent
certain that the ball
no longer exists which
means in all probability
the oldest known Saints
heirloom is George
Carter’s red sash which
he pinned to his white
shirt when he played
in Saints’ first-ever
competitive fixture, a
Hampshire Junior Cup
cup-tie at Testwood
Lane, Redbridge vs
Totton in 1887.
That sash is now
displayed in the
club’s 1885 suite, and
we must be grateful
to George Carter’s
daughter-in-law, Nellie
34 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
who kept it safe for
decades and handed
it over to me in the
that once the club had
organised some sort
be handed over.
Nellie is no longer with
us, but it is pleasing
that her wish was
finally granted. If you
look closely at the
featured picture of
George, was taken in
be seen attached
to his sash. More
of those in the next
programme, but
below the sash can be
seen a shield-shaped
cloth badge. That
badge was presented
to any player
who represented
Hampshire, as George
did, and again Nellie
had held on to this
badge and was happy
for me to photograph
it for posterity.

he went on to serve
the club as a player
until 1893 when a leg
injury forced him to
hang up his boots. He
continued to serve the
club as manager of
the Reserves between
1901 and 1915.
He retired from the
Ordnance Survey in
1927 and in his old
age went to live with
his son (also called
George, a teacher at
Taunton’s) and Nellie.
It was in their house
in Southampton’s
Southview Road
that George met an
unfortunate end when
in January 1945 he fell
onto an electric fire
in his bedroom and
received extensive
burns which lead to
his death in hospital
that same day.
By holding onto his
memorabilia, his
daughter-in-law not
only kept alive his
memory, but also
ensured – with the
sash– that Saints
can now proudly
display an artefact
that goes back to
when the club was a
mere two years old.
ON THE
ROAD WITH
THE SAINTS
by Barry Webb with Viv Broadway, Travel Club Coordinator
RUSSELL MARTIN SAID RECENTLY
THAT WHEREAS PLAYERS AND
STAFF IN A CLUB CHANGE,
SUPPORTERS ARE PERMANENT.
They are an important
part of a club’s history
and, reflecting on
that, I began to think
about how to capture
some supporters’
experiences here.
The idea grew
when I recalled
two programme
contributions towards
the end of last season
by Tara Doel (the trip
to Be’er Sheva) and
by Mick Paget (the
memorable League
Cup semi-final win at
Anfield). So, here we
go, featuring Saints
travelling fans.
We start with a look
at the history of the
official Saints Travel
Club. I hope to feature
the independent
Saints Away Travel
in future editions,
as well as sharing
tales of supporters
who make their own
way to games.
At the beginning
of September 1975,
Southampton FC
issued an invitation
to a meeting for
anyone interested
in formulating the
“Saints Traveller Club”.
The club said it was
“very conscious of the
need to supply regular
travel... to Saints
away games either
by coach or by rail”.
The meeting held
at The Dell on the
3rd of that month
was attended by a
number of supporters
and other interested
parties. The Saints
Travellers Club was
duly born (later to be
known as the official
Saints Travel Club).
Two coaches travelled
to Blackpool for the first
trip on 20th September
1975, a match which
the Saints lost 4-3.
At that time even
the most optimistic
supporter could not
dream that the season
would end with us
travelling to Wembley
to win the FA Cup.
Since then the club
has run trips to away
games on a regular
basis. In the early days
supporters amused
themselves on the
coaches with raffles
and games of bingo,
attracting the name
of “bingo buses” from
some supporters. This
was well before the
age of the mobile
phone, personal
stereos, computer
games and video
players on coaches
– all things that now
help to make trips
pass more quickly.
The vehicles have
improved significantly
36 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 37
since 1975 and so too
has the motorway
network: early trips
happened well before
the completion of
the M3, M25 or M40.
The club had
purchased blocks of
train tickets for long
trips such as Carlisle
and Blackburn but
this had advantages
and disadvantages.
Travel was faster and
more comfortable, but
often supporters had
to change trains or
catch buses as well as
having to walk some
distance to the ground
– all of which added to
the length and costs
of the journey. For trips
via London there was
also a dash across
the capital to avoid a
long wait at Waterloo.
Such costs and
complications meant
that official train
travel soon became
a thing of the past.
At one time, the Saints
Travel Club comprised
members who were
offered reduced prices
for the trips: nowadays
the cost of the travel
is £2 less for season
ticket holders. I still
have my membership
card (as shown
bottom left) for the
2000/01 season. I was
a relative latecomer
to the Travel Club
when I opted for the
coach after many
hours spent driving to
and from matches.
The Saints Travel Club
has been to hundreds
of matches, covered
thousands of miles and
has led to many lasting
friendships. There have
been many highs:
winning at Anfield; Old
Trafford; Highbury;
and trips to Wembley
and Cardiff. The photo
shows some of the
coaches lined up for
our trip to Wembley
to watch our victory
in the Johnstone’s
Paint Trophy Final
in March 2010.
There have also been
many lows: one of the
worst was losing 4-3 in
a cup tie at Tranmere
Rovers after leading
3-0. I recall the horrible
silence on the return
trip from Merseyside:
a coachful of people
stuck for words!
Another low was
the trip to Fratton
Park in April 2005
when, although not
mathematically, we
effectively gave up
our Premier League
status. Humiliated by
our closest rivals, the
Pompey fans made the
most of their victory.
At least we only had a
short journey home.
But let’s remember
that trips to Bristol
Rovers, Dagenham
& Redbridge, and
Oldham Athletic (to
name but a few)
have offered away
supporters some
interesting adventures.
Indeed, victories
down in League One
were particularly
special as we started
our return to the
Championship and the
Premier League. Let’s
recreate that feeling
this season and climb
back to the top flight.
ROD RUDDICK
AN APPRECIATION BY GORDON SIMPSON
WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF THE
SOUTHAMPTON ACADEMY,
THERE ARE MANY INCREDIBLE
NAMES THAT SPRING TO MIND.
Were it not for the
work of Rod Ruddick,
though, that list may
not have been quite
so impressive.
It was with great
sadness that the
club learned of
Rod’s passing late
last month at the
age of 80, but the
remarkable legacy
that he leaves as one
of the most influential
scouts in its history
will live on forever.
He was, after all, the
man who spotted
and recommended
a nine-year-old
Gareth Bale to the
club, and who would
later play a crucial
role in convincing
them not to release
the young Welshman
as a teenager.
That alone would be
enough for anyone
to cement a special
place in Saints folklore.
Yet the list of notable
young players whose
careers Rod played
such an important part
in feels almost endless.
It features the likes
of club legend Jason
Dodd – “I would not
have had a career if it
wasn’t for Rod, simple
as that.” – as well as
current Saints defender
Jack Stephens and
countless others in
between, including
Nathan Dyer, Sam
Gallagher, Martin
Cranie and many,
many more.
His association with
the club began in
the 1980s as a parttime
scout, before he
became the long-time
manager of the Bath
Satellite Academy
that played such an
important role in the
club’s famed youth
development, before
working as part of the
youth recruitment
team in various
guises until 2020.
Dodd, who would
end up becoming
Southampton captain
and making 483
appearances for the
club, is one of the
players who feels
he owes a debt of
gratitude to Rod.
“I was at Bath City
and wasn’t picked up
by anybody,” he said.
“I was 18 and I’d sort
of missed the boat
on youth football a
bit. But Rod was the
driving force that got
me the trial down here
for six weeks. I wasn’t
sure about it, but he
was instrumental in
saying ‘You’ve got to
give it a go, I believe
in you’ and luckily for
me Chris Nicholl, the
manager at the time,
also believed in me.
“Because of Rod I got
to come down and
earned a professional
contract. I was just
lucky I had someone
like Rod who believed
in me, pushed me
and helped me fulfil
a dream I didn’t think
I would be able to.”
Jack Stephens was
another who credits
the influence of Rod
on his career.
"I think I was about
11 or 12, playing in a
38 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 39
tournament for my
school, and Rod was
there working as a
scout for Southampton
and he spoke to my
dad and obviously
realised it was too far
for me to come for a
trial, so he spoke to
someone he knew at
Plymouth and got me
a trial there,” he said.
“He was a massive
part of me eventually
coming here, but
originally going to
Plymouth, so I've got
a lot to owe Rod for.
"He had so much
passion for his job.
He loved scouting
and watching games.
You could just see
how proud he was
that he was able to
find so many players
that could help this
football club and other
football clubs as well.
There's hundreds that
he's probably had a
big influence on.
"He was a brilliant,
brilliant scout, but
just an even better
bloke. A real nice man
who had time for
everyone. Just an allround
brilliant guy.”
Dodd echoed those
thoughts, saying: “He
was a friend and was
someone you could
rely on. He was just a
lovely man. He was
very, very good at
what he did and it’s
not a surprise he was
instrumental in getting
numerous players
professional deals and
helping them make a
living out of football.”
In December 2021,
Rod was diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s and
vascular dementia,
before passing
away recently, with
his funeral held
earlier this week.
His daughter, Tina, who
helped care for him,
said the outpouring
of emotion had been
of immense comfort
to the family.
“It’s meant so much,”
she said. “I’ve got two
boys and when they
started reading the
responses and the
respect he was held
in, it was really quite
emotional for all of us.
“It was his life,
completely his life.
He took so much joy
out of it and was so
passionate about it.
But he was extremely
modest too, so I
think we only really
knew the half of it.
“We are all really,
really proud of him.”
Lea Residential Care Home,
Rod was cared for, are
Norwich toiled to a
13th-placed finish in
the Championship last
season, failing to score
at home after February
and winning only one
of their last 11 games.
Understandably,
expectations are mixed
for the new campaign
and, as they embark on
a consecutive secondtier
season for the first
time since 2018, the
club have revamped
their squad.
Experienced players
Ashley Barnes, Shane
Duffy, Jack Stacey and
Swiss international
Christian Fassnacht
arrived over the
summer, while fans’
favourite Teemu Pukki,
who scored 88 goals
for the club, departed.
“I have a good feeling
about this group in
terms of the spirit, the
atmosphere and the
togetherness,” said
head coach David
Wagner in the summer.
“After last season
we said we need
more leadership and
experience.
“We’re one of 10 to
12 teams who like to
chase for promotion. I
will not hide away from
saying it, but I can’t
promise it. What I can
promise is that this
group of players will
work hard every single
day and we have to
see what we can get
out of the season.”
In Wagner’s first preseason
at the club
following his January
arrival, he set about
conditioning his squad
to be one of the fittest
in the Championship,
as well as playing a
style of aggressive,
pressing football.
The early signs are
good. Norwich were
unbeaten in their seven
pre-season games and
then came from behind
to defeat Hull City on
the opening day of the
campaign thanks to a
stoppage-time strike
by substitute Adam
Idah.
THE BOSS:
DAVID WAGNER
Norwich appointed former
Huddersfield Town boss David
Wagner as their new head
coach on a 12-month rolling
contract in January. The
51-year-old succeeded Dean
Smith, who was sacked the
day after City’s defeat at Luton
Town on Boxing Day. Germanborn
former United States
international Wagner arrived
at Huddersfield as a relative
unknown in 2015 having worked
for Borussia Dortmund II. He
guided the Terriers to Premier
League promotion in 2017 and
kept them in the top flight for
a season before leaving by
mutual consent in 2019. Wagner
was then appointed boss of
German giants FC Schalke
04, but he lasted just one full
season having finished in the
bottom half of the Bundesliga.
He was sacked just two games
into his second campaign and
then took charge at Swiss side
Young Boys. His stint included a
Champions League group stage
win against Manchester United.
ONE TO WATCH:
GABRIEL SARA
Gabriel Sara became the
first Brazilian to represent
Norwich when he joined the
Canaries from São Paulo for an
undisclosed fee in July 2022.
He scored seven times in his
debut season in England and
was named Norwich’s Player of
the Year in May. Born in Joinville,
Brazil, the skilful and strong Sara
progressed through the youth
ranks at São Paulo, making his
senior debut in the Brasileiro
Serie A in 2017. He went on score
17 goals in 113 appearances
for São Paulo, playing in the
Copa Libertadores and Copa
Sudamericana, South America’s
equivalents of the Champions
League and Europa League,
respectively. “I’m a very
intense player who will fight
for the team,” he said upon
signing for Norwich. “When
the opportunity arises, I go for
goal. It was always a dream
for me to leave Brazil and play
football in another country.”
Predominantly a central
midfielder, the left-footed Sara
can also operate on the right
wing or in the No. 10 role.

THE LOCAL
LOWDOWN
WE ASKED OPPOSITION EXPERT PADDY DAVITT, NORWICH
CITY EDITOR FOR THE PINK UN, TO PREVIEW TODAY’S
GAME FROM THE VISITORS’ POINT OF VIEW…
Norwich finished 13th
last term after coming
down from the Premier
League the year
before. How was the
season perceived by
the club and the fans?
A failure. No other
way to sugar-coat it.
To be fair, that was
acknowledged inside
the club as much as
within the fanbase. Both
towards the end of the
season in public words
and messaging, and
action during the close
season. David Wagner
inherited a difficult
situation coming in
midway through last
season, in terms of a
squad built by Dean
Smith and trying to
implement his new
ideas, while striving to
make up ground and
win games of football
in a league which is
relentless. However,
with Norwich looking in
decent shape to make
the play-offs around
late March they won
one of the last 11 in the
league. Compounded
44 « SAINTS « we march on
by no goals and no
wins in the last five
games of the season
at Carrow Road. That,
for a club who began
the season stating
a third consecutive
promotion at this level
was the objective,
ensured there was a lot
of frustration expressed
by many supporters.
What is the
expectation of the
team coming into a
new campaign?
As much as preseason
is about
fitness, and primarily
a chance to get
tactical ideas across
and integrate new
signings and refresh
the squad generally,
Wagner admitted
himself it was a very
good pre-season. They
were unbeaten and
conceded very few
goals against some
decent European
level opposition. The
German has brought in
a degree of experience
in players like Ashley
Barnes, Shane Duffy
and Jack Stacey to add
that streetwise edge he
felt the group needed.
Allied to that they
have some exciting
young talent. Now
the question is how
well, and how quickly
can they gel? Given
the backdrop of last
season’s frustration I
think there is a holding
pattern at present
regarding what they
can achieve. Wagner
said before the first
league game of the
new season Norwich
is one of ’10 to 12’ clubs
who will feel promotion
is realistic.
A late winner secured
a 2-1 home victory over
Hull on the opening
day. How was the
performance, and
what sort of challenge
should Saints expect to
face today?
Excellent. From the
outside it might
look like they were a
touch fortunate to
win the game with
a 96th minute goal
that was not without
controversy in the
build-up. However, they
created 28 chances,
played some excellent
football, and apart from
a poor goal conceded
due to a defensive mixup
they looked solid
out of possession. A
marked improvement
from what had gone
before at Carrow Road
this year. They will
travel with optimism
renewed today, and
while acknowledging
Southampton are likely
to be at the right end of
the table come the end
of this season, they will
relish the challenge.
Russell Martin won
three promotions with
Norwich as a player.
How is he remembered
by the fans?
The first two under
the management of
Paul Lambert were a
particularly memorable
period when the whole
club felt energised
and on the up. His third
promotion was when
he captained the side
to a Wembley playoff
final win in front
of 40,000, on a day
many City fans would
happily tell you was
their best supporting
the club. Funnily
enough I remember
seeing Russell with his
lad at the team hotel
the following morning
and he told me he had
slept with the play-off
trophy beside him. Still
a very popular figure,
although he underlined
there are no divided
loyalties anymore when
he brought Swansea
to Carrow Road for the
first time as a coach at
the end of last season,
and won 3-0.
How do you see the
game going today?
2-2. Russell and Matty
Gill will be keen to
get off to a winning
start at home in the
league, and build
on the Sheffield
Wednesday result. I
would expect Saints
will dominate territory
and possession, but
this Norwich side under
Wagner are better on
the counter. If they
defend properly, they
will cause problems
going the other way.
INTRODUCING...
THE FAN ADVISORY BOARD
THE FAN
ADVISORY
BOARD
In May 2023, we
formalised Saints Voice
into the Saints Fan
Advisory Board (FAB),
with the aim of building
a closer relationship
between the club and
our fanbase. We want
to make sure your
voice is heard and
through the FAB we’re
looking for feedback
56 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
on your experiences as
a Saints fan, to ensure
we’re properly informed
when it comes to club
decisions that impact
you.
Fan Advisory Boards
were nationally
recommended by
the Fan Engagement
Standards and we’re
excited to be driving
forwards with what has
already proved to be
such a vital link to you,
our fanbase.
WHO SITS ON
THE FAB?
The Saints Fan Advisory
Board is co-chaired by
Mike Sadler (supporter
member) and Charlie
Boss (Saints Chief
Commercial Officer),
supported by further
members from the club
and representatives
from the fanbase. The
fans on the board
were originally elected
to Saints Voice by a
supporter vote (the
previous supporter
body) and so now
continue that work
with the FAB. Each
will sit on the board
for up to three years.
We currently have 16
active and committed
members who
represent a broad
cross section of our
fanbase covering age,
gender, Season and
non-Season Ticket
Holders and both Men’s
and Women’s team
fans - members sit in
all different areas of the
ground so you’ll likely
have seen them about.

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 57
WHAT WORK DID
SAINTS VOICE
DO AND WHAT
CAN WE EXPECT
FROM THE FAB?
Before the FAB was
formed, Saints Voice
was involved in many
successful initiatives
around fan loyalty
and experience
which included
giving feedback on
pricing structures
for Season Tickets,
how the Fans Fund
was spent, catering,
communication
and atmosphere.
It also pushed the
sustainability agenda
and maintained a
strong focus on fan
driven issues such as
away fans in home
areas. Working with
the club, Saints Voice
was a great asset in
enhancing the fan
experience and we’re
excited to build on
that work together
now through the Fan
Advisory Board.
HAS THERE BEEN
A FAB MEETING
YET?
The first FAB Meeting
was held in May 2023
and attended by club
Chair, Henrik Kraft, a
keen supporter of the
group and what its
formed to achieve. If
you want to see what
was discussed, the
minutes are available
to read on our website,
southamptonfc.com.
The FAB will be meeting
four times a year
alongside a series of
subgroups who’ll meet
more frequently to
progress discussions
on communications,
sustainability, stadium
topics and special
projects, for example
the new streaming
products. The FAB has
already played an
important role in the
launch of our Season
Ticket campaign, with
more Season Tickets
sold so far for the
2023/24 campaign
than was sold at this
point ahead of the
2022/23 season.
The next meeting will be at
the end of August. For further
information on the Fan Advisory
Board, and if you have a
topic or issue you would like
raised with us, please email
southampton.fc.fab@gmail.com.
