Nathan Tella makes
the breakthrough at
would find themselves
DEAR SAINTS FANS, WELCOME ALONG TO OUR SECOND
HOME GAME OF THE NEW SEASON, AS WE TAKE ON
QUEENS PARK RANGERS IN THE SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP.
I’d like to welcome
Gareth Ainsworth,
his staff and players,
and of course the
travelling fans to St
Mary’s this afternoon.
Our first home game
here, a fortnight ago,
was certainly one to
remember. As well as
having lots to improve
on from the game, I
06 « SAINTS « we march on
thought we showed
some real positives
against a Norwich side
that will be very
strong this season.
There was plenty of
exciting, attacking
football on show in a
game that ultimately
finished 4-4.
To come from behind
three times on the
day, the players had
to show togetherness,
character and
resilience in spades.
To do that in front of
a hugely supportive
crowd of more than
30,000 was crucial
in setting the tone
for what’s to come.
We proved that we
never give in again in
another really tough
game last week at
Plymouth. In our two
away games so far
we’ve faced two
promoted teams,
which is probably the
worst time to play
them when they are
still riding the crest
of a wave, but we’ve
stood up to that test
and got the win on
both occasions.
Being honest, I wasn’t
happy about our firsthalf
performance,
but we started the
we march on » SAINTS » 07
second half brilliantly.
We were dominant
after half time, kept
pushing and eventually
got our rewards with
Ché’s late goal.
In a perfect world
we would be leading
heading into stoppage
time, but to win games
in that manner does
a lot for the belief of
the group – especially
after last season, when
naturally the players’
confidence would
have taken a hit.
Their attitude and
approach has been
first class and we are
building whilst picking
up results, which is
crucial in this first
part of the season.
I was delighted to
“To win games
in that manner
does a lot for
the belief of
the group –
especially after
last season,
when naturally
the players’
confidence would
have taken a hit.”
welcome Flynn Downes
to the club this week,
a player we’ve worked
with previously at
Swansea. He’s a
brilliant character
– he’s aggressive, a
great athlete and a
winner. He will give
absolutely everything
every time he steps
on the pitch in a
Southampton shirt,
and I’m sure you’ll take
to him very quickly.
Your support down
in Plymouth was
incredible, and
definitely played a
significant part in
helping us over the
line late in the game.
I really enjoyed the
atmosphere here
against Norwich too,
and we will need
more of the same this
afternoon to get that
first home win on the
board and keep the
momentum growing.
SAINTS SEAL
LOAN DEAL FOR
DOWNES
Southampton Football
Club is delighted
to confirm the loan
signing of midfielder
Flynn Downes from
West Ham United.
The 24-year-old has
completed a move
to St Mary’s for the
remainder of the
season and reunites
with Russell Martin,
having also played
08 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
under the manager at
Swansea City.
Downes joined the
Welsh club in 2021 from
Ipswich Town, where
he had started his
career, with his form so
impressive that West
Ham signed him the
following summer.
In total, Downes has
made 184 senior career
appearances, scoring
four times, across
his time with Ipswich,
Luton on loan, Swansea
and West Ham.
Director of Football
Jason Wilcox said:
“Flynn is a really
dynamic player and
someone who will
add a lot of quality in
midfield.
“He’s got a great
relationship with Russell
and his coaching staff
already, which means
he also comes in with
a real understanding
of the system and how
we want to play, which
is ideal for both us and
him.”
Flynn Downes said:
“The ambition for the
club is obviously to get
promoted, to get back
in the Premier League,
and that enticed me
a lot.
“Obviously I’ve worked
with the gaffer and
his staff before, and
I know what they’re
about. Their attention
to detail, the way
they play, what they
demand of us players
– it’s just such a good
environment to be
in, so it’s a no brainer
really.”

WARD-PROWSE
DEPARTS AFTER
20 YEARS
James Ward-Prowse
has completed a
transfer to West Ham
United, bringing to
an end an incredible
20-year association
between the club and
the midfielder, who
departs as one of the
finest talents to ever
come out of the Saints
Academy.
Joining as an eightyear-old,
Ward-Prowse
rose through the
youth ranks to make
his senior debut in the
2011/12 season, as he
began a journey that
would feature 410 firstteam
appearances,
55 goals, European
campaigns, a major
cup final, becoming
captain of the side and
also the fulfilment of
his dream to represent
England.
His commitment to
Southampton FC
over two decades, his
professionalism both
on and off the pitch,
and his support in the
community means he
leaves with his legacy
as a Saints legend well
and truly cemented.
While the club is
naturally disappointed
to see him leave, we
understand his desire
to continue pursuing
his career both in the
Premier League and
on the European and
international stages,
and are satisfied
that we have now
received appropriate
compensation for a
player of his quality
and importance, which
can further support
the club’s own plans in
the remainder of the
transfer window.
We are also grateful
to the professionalism
that he has shown
throughout the entire
process.
Everyone at
Southampton FC
would like to extend
their heartfelt thanks
to James for what he
has given to the club
during his long time
with us. We wish him
every success in the
future.

WOMEN news
SAINTS RETURN TO
CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION
Southampton FC Women return to Barclays
Women’s Championship action, looking to
build on an impressive first season in the
league in which they finished 6th. With the
season kicking off tomorrow, we take a look at
the first five fixtures:
Sunday 27th August:
Lewes (A)
Tomorrow, Lewes
provide the first test
of the season for
Marieanne Spacey-
Cale’s side, with a trip
to The Dripping Pan.
The Rooks were stiff
competition for Saints
last season, holding
the side to a 2-2 draw
and then beating
them 1-0 at St Mary’s
Stadium. The latter
win was courtesy of
a sublime Emily Kraft
header – will the Irish
international be able
to provide the same
goods in a Saints
shirt?
Sunday 3rd
September:
Blackburn Rovers (H)
Saints’ first fixture
in SO14 sees them
welcome Blackburn
Rovers. Another side
who frustrated the
newly promoted side
last season, the squad
will be eager to put
performances behind
them and better their
two draws from two.
Rovers have gone
through an off-field
re-branding over the
summer break, but
their squad remains
largely unchanged,
save for the notable
departure of Kayleigh
MacDonald and
the return of Welsh
international Georgia
Walters.
Sunday 10th
September:
Sunderland (H)
It’s a long trip for
Sunderland as they
make their way to St
Mary’s for the third
game of the season.
Strugglers in last
season’s league
campaign, the Black
Cats will be hoping
for a revival, with the
two bottom-placed
teams now set for the
drop after a change
to the promotion and
relegation rules.
Saints beat Sunderland
1-0 in both encounters
– unable to make
their dominance of
possession pay further
dividends – but with a
new-look strike force
for 2023/24, this will
be an area they’ll be
looking to improve on.
Reading (A)
Newly relegated
Reading have had a
tumultuous time off
the pitch over the
summer as they tried
to rebuild following
club-wide difficulties,
the departure of longtime
manager Kelly
number of players
leaving.
However, familiar face
and former Oxford
have steadied the
difficulties, Reading
will certainly be no
Saints played Reading
at St Mary’s, but the
new-look Saints will
this time round.
Sunday 1st October:
One of this year’s
Birmingham City will
as October dawns.
City, who pulled off
an impressive run of
form at the end of the
2022/23 season, have
retained nearly all of
their players, including
top goalscorer Jade
Pennock who was
receiving interest from
a number of Barclays
Women’s Super League
clubs.
It was a win apiece
last season, with Lucia
Kendall sealing her
return from injury with
the goal that sealed
three points at home,
while City dominated
at St Andrew’s
coming away winners
JACK
STEPHENS
TWELVE YEARS INTO HIS SOUTHAMPTON CAREER,
THERE HAD NEVER BEEN MORE UNCERTAINTY FOR JACK
STEPHENS THAN HE FELT COMING INTO THE CURRENT
CAMPAIGN. HOW QUICKLY THINGS CHANGE. FROM
NAILING DOWN A STARTING BERTH TO SIGNING A
NEW DEAL AND HIS APPOINTMENT AS SAINTS’ NEW
CAPTAIN, THE DEFENDER IS LIVING EVERY MOMENT OF
AN ALREADY EVENTFUL SEASON…
12 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
we march on » SAINTS » 13
Jack shakes hands with Director of Football
Jason Wilcox (left) on a new two-year deal
“I think if I looked
back over the last
12 months, it would
probably scramble my
head a little bit and
be quite confusing
how I’ve ended up as
captain as the club,”
Jack Stephens pauses,
taking a moment to
process it all.
It’s been quite a
journey for the
Cornishman, whose
St Mary’s stay now
stands at 12 years, but,
as he points out, the
latest one has been
a rollercoaster of
uncertainty.
From being a tried
and trusted member
of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s
squad over the
first three and a
half seasons of the
Austrian’s reign,
14 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
Stephens found himself
bumped down the
pecking order following
a summer recruitment
drive in which Saints
signed ten new faces,
including two central
defenders.
On transfer deadline
day, he was loaned
to Bournemouth,
prompting uncertainty
over whether he
would ever wear the
Southampton shirt
again.
But in football things
have a funny habit of
going full circle. After
an impressive season
in which he helped the
Cherries, pre-season
underdogs, survive in
the Premier League,
Saints were relegated
in his absence and,
two managers later,
Stephens is leading the
team’s quest for a topflight
return.
“It’s a massive honour
for me,” he says. “I want
to be playing football
here, and to be captain
is just incredible. It's
something that I'm
really proud of.”
The reality is that he
never wanted to leave
in the first place, but
Stephens is grateful
to Bournemouth for
trusting him in their
own survival battle.
Sometimes, a change
is as good as a rest.
“It was tough for me to
take in – being at the
club for so long and
having to move on,
thinking possibly that
could be it,” he says. “It
was obviously difficult,
ut I just kept my head
down and gave 100 per
cent.
“I actually think the
loan spell helped me
out after the initial
disappointment of
realising I wasn't going
to be involved as much
here. Once I got over
that, I think it was a
really positive season
for me.
"I felt like I learnt a lot
and I'm very grateful to
Bournemouth for giving
me that opportunity
to find my form again.
I felt like I improved
as a player and I feel
like I've come back a
better player.”
Stephens is a popular
personality at
Staplewood. There’s
something refreshingly
real – normal – about
him. Not a hint of ego,
and a true lover of the
game.
His passion for football
as infectious off the
pitch as on it, with a
depth of knowledge
seemingly spanning
every league in the
country, you just know
that lifting the Sky Bet
Championship trophy
at the end of the
season would mean
the world to him.
It was no surprise, then,
that Russell Martin,
a people person,
soon took a shine to
Stephens. Not only to
his character, but his
ball-playing ability,
which appears tailormade
for the new
manager’s Saints
vision.
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 15
With his future still up
in the air on day one of
pre-season, Martin was
the right manager at
the right time.
"I think I was probably
in a similar boat to
a lot of the players,”
Stephens admits not
knowing whether he
would stay or go. “But
I had some good
conversations with
the manager and he
made it clear that he
wanted me to stay and
I've loved working with
him.
"I can't speak highly
enough of him
because of how
he's treated me, first
and foremost. The
conversations we've
had, obviously coming
back from loan last
year, and the football
16 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 17
that we've played and
the training he puts
on is very enjoyable,
so it was a no-brainer
for me and I'm looking
forward to working with
him.”
The “no-brainer”
Stephens refers to
is his decision to
sign a new two-year
contract. Instantly
given the clarity he
craved, knowing he
had the trust of the
manager was all
the reassurance he
needed.
“It was an easy
decision for me to
sign the contract. I’m
really confident that
we’re going to have a
good season,” he said,
even before a ball was
kicked. “Hopefully I can
help the club get back
to the Premier League
to start with, but
ultimately we want to
stay there and push on
and get back to where
we were as a football
club a few years ago.”
Since then, things have
moved on again. After
helping Saints to a
dramatic late win at
Hillsborough on the
EFL’s opening night,
Stephens was given
the Saints captaincy
ahead of the team’s
first home game,
against Norwich, with
James Ward-Prowse
on his way out.
And so, 15 months
since his last
competitive
appearance at St
Mary’s, Stephens
returned with the
armband, leading
the team out for a
pulsating 4-4 draw
with Martin’s former
club.
“It was a lot to take in,”
he reflected. “Obviously
the game was quite an
emotional day, the first
one for me as captain
was incredible for me,
but not having Prowsey
there was a sad day.”
It says much about
the man that Ward-
Prowse’s impending
departure after 20
years of service
remained uppermost
in Stephens’s thoughts,
even on a day of such
personal pride.
"The manager spoke to
me and just said, 'if he
(Ward-Prowse) stays,
great, that's what we
want, but if he does
move on then I want
you to be the captain
and I want you to lead
the team.'
"So that was obviously
a massive privilege
for me and something
I'm really proud of, but
obviously I was still
hopeful that Prowsey
would stay and that he
would be leading the
team still – that would
have been better, I
think.
“But we have to move
on – we wish him well
and life goes on here.
We have to do our best
without him.”
His approach with the
armband, Stephens
insists, won’t change.
He points to the
influence of José
18 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
Fonte, “one of the best
leaders I've seen,”
and Steven Davis as
influential captains in
his younger years, and
“the way he shows his
professionalism every
day” of Ward-Prowse,
as the right examples
to follow.
“I've always tried to
be a leader in the
dressing room and a
leader on the pitch,” he
explains. “The position I
play obviously requires
a lot of communication
and that's something
I've always tried to
bring, so I don't think
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 19
that's going to change
too much, which is
good for me, because
it doesn't put too much
pressure on me to
do things that aren't
natural for me.
“I feel like it’s always
nice having a bit of
extra responsibility,
and I always try to
help the younger lads
coming through and
try to guide them in the
right way. Obviously
we’ve got some very
talented players at the
minute, so it’s a really
exciting time for the
football club.
“For me, it’s nice to see
them coming through
because at one stage
that was me, and it’s
nice to be at the other
end of that and just
help them out as much
as possible.”
As if the first week of
the season had not
been eventful enough
for Stephens, the fixture
list then pitted him
against his boyhood
team, Plymouth Argyle,
to whom he remains
grateful as “the club
that gave me the
platform to become a
professional footballer,”
at Home Park.
As football came
full circle again, fate
would have it that the
250th game of his
club career would take
place on the same
ground as the first.
“It was a nice home
game for my family,
which makes a
change,” he smiles.
“My dad walked to the
game, so that was
nice for him. It’s one
extreme to the other –
we had Plymouth away
and the next one away
is Sunderland!
“It was a little bit nervewracking
going back,
a little bit of pressure,
but it was a nice day.
A few of my mates are
season ticket holders
at Plymouth, so they
were cheering them
on. I’m just glad I had
the bragging rights
rather than them!”
Ultimately it was a
milestone to savour
for Stephens, as Ché
Adams’s stoppagetime
winner extended
Saints’ unbeaten start
to seven points from
three games.
The skipper
acknowledges there
is a lot of work to do if
the team is to fulfil its
ambition of promotion
at the first attempt,
but, as Martin points
out, Saints are building
whilst winning. There’s
more to come.
For Stephens, who was
here for the cup finals,
top-six finishes and
European campaigns,
there is a fresh wave
of optimism inside the
club, and it’s spreading
to the stands.
“We want the fans to
be behind us at all
times, but I’ve always
said we have to give
them something to
hold on to, something
to go off – it’s a
two-way street in
that regard,” he
acknowledges.
“Obviously it’s been
a really tough last 12
months for the football
club, for everyone
involved – players,
staff, but even more so
for the fans who pay
to come and watch us.
It couldn’t have been
easy last season.
“I can see that they’re
with us, for sure, and
hopefully they can see
we’re trying to put all
that behind us. We’ve
obviously got a new
manager, new staff,
and there’s some real
positivity inside the
club and we’re trying
to show that to the
fans.
“It really feels like, from
our point of view, they
believe in that, and
they can see that
we are doing things
differently this year.
Hopefully it’s the start
of a special season.”

ACADEMY
PRE-SEASON
PREPARATIONS
Following what
seemed a very short
off season the U21s
and U18s returned to
Staplewood during the
week commencing
26th June 2023.
There followed was
busy period for all
support staff as new
players were moved
into their first flats,
medical and S&C staff
carried out checks
and tests to make
sure the boys were fit
to train, and the club
nutritionists worked
with each player to get
them properly fuelled
for the intense sessions
ahead.
In addition, our
Operations, Grounds
and Kit & Equipment
teams made sure that
all the facilities and
training gear were
in the best condition
ready for the players’
return.
After a week of intense
training, the club
came together at St
Mary’s to celebrate the
new intake of 1st Year
scholars and award
them with their caps
to recognise their
successes so far. This
would also be their first
experience of moving
out of home and living
full-time with a host
family. We thank the
hosts for their ongoing
support.
UNDER-18S
TOUR ITALY
Having spent so much
of their first week
building fitness, both
U21 and U18 groups
were keen to get on
the pitch and face
their first pre-season
opposition.
The 21s played their
first game on 11th July
at Northampton Town
with further matches
against Oxford
United, Leyton Orient,
Weymouth, Torquay
United and Nottingham
Forest all before their
season opener at
Newcastle United.
The 18s pre-season
was a little different.
Following an initial
pre-season game at
Staplewood against
Forest Green Rovers,
they left for a 13-day
tour of Italy.
The tour, which was
part of the Erasmus
scheme, saw them
train – doing double
sessions – in intense
heat. But the boys
acclimatised to this
very quickly. In the 13
days they were away,
they played three
games – against Real
Vicenza, FC Krka of
Slovenia and Atalanta
U19s.
The boys were
also exposed to
cultural experiences
in Milan and
undertook language
lessons as well as
completing formal
education as part
of their scholarship
agreements.
Following the
successful tour the
U18s played one more
pre-season friendly
against Swansea City
ahead of their season
opener at Crystal
Palace on 12th August.
Congratulations to all
those involved in the
successful planning
and delivery of the
pre-season and we
wish our Academy
teams all the very best
for the season ahead.

after time in prison.

Saints Restart will work
with male offenders
who are due to be
released from HMP
Winchester, helping
them resettle into
community life. A
member of specialist
Saints Foundation staff
will support offenders
ahead of their release,
preparing them
to reintegrate into
community life using
one-to-one mentoring
and group sessions.
Our engagement then
continues beyond the
gate, working closely
with probation officers
to help participants
settle back into
Southampton. It’s
hoped this continuity of
support will help break
cycles of reoffending
and ultimately provide
a new pathway in life,
away from criminality.
The project has now
started the early
stages of delivery,
with the first inmates
beginning to receive
support ahead of their
release.
ON THE
ROAD WITH
THE SAINTS
by Barry Webb with Leon Burton
IN THE LAST PROGRAMME I MENTIONED FOOTBALL
SPECIAL TRAINS FOR TRAVELLING FANS. THE
POSTER BELOW SHOWS WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR
FANS TRAVELLING FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT OVER
100 YEARS AGO –TO GET TO A HOME GAME.
It was by train that
guest writer Leon
Burton made his
first away trip to
Liverpool for a Fifth
Round FA Cup tie on
13th February 1971. He
describes how it came
about and bravely
attempts to write in
a Liverpool accent!
34 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
In 1971 I was 16 and
working in the first
year of my print
apprenticeship at
Caustons, a huge
printing company in
Eastleigh. In those days
the big printing presses
had two “minders”
running the press
and two assistants
loading in the huge
sheets of paper. There
was little emphasis
on health and safety
then with virtually no
guards on machines.
As “minder two” my
job was to assist my
“number one”, Colin.
Colin was born and
bred in Liverpool
with such a broad
accent that I could
hardly understand a
word he said half the
time. But I understood
him alright when he
said, “Hey Leon lad,
howz about going to
watch Liverpooool play
Saints with yer dad?”
My dad Frank also
came from Liverpool,
but he had a less
strong accent
than Colin. I could
understand every
word my dad spoke
– probably down
to having lived with
him for 16 years.
It was easy to ask
dad as he was also a
“number two” minder
on the adjacent
printing press. Colin
called him over. “Howz
it going Frank? Yer lad
here, Leon, wants to
go Anfield to watch
the cup game. Whad
aboud it Frank?”
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 35
So it came about
that the three of us
boarded the Football
Special train for the
trip from Eastleigh to
Lime Street station in
Liverpool. We settled in
for the journey which
would take about three
hours. Out came the
tinnies, the playing
cards and Colin’s
cigarettes – “fags”, as
they called them. Frank
took a fag and Colin
offered me one. I did
smoke, but never in
front of my dad. Colin
urged me, “Go on lad,
have one, yer dad
knows youzz smoke.”
Soon we were on our
way, all three of us
having a fag, playing
cards and drinking
from our tinnies.
I can’t recall how we
got from Lime Street
to Anfield but when
we got there we found
that our seats in the
stands were close to
the Kop end. Until then,
I thought the Milton
Road end was loud but
the Kop was even more
so. The Liverpool fans
sang “You’ll Never Walk
Alone”, swaying and
holding their scarves
aloft. I remember
thinking that this
was their church...
but on a Saturday.
The Saints emerged
wearing their away
strip in a colour known
as old gold. The teams
lined up as follows:
Liverpool: Clemence,
Hughes, Yeats,
Smith, Lloyd, Lawler,
McLaughlin, Hall,
Boersma, Toshack,
Heighway.
Southampton: Martin,
Kirkup, Hollywood,
Fisher, McGrath,
Gabriel, Paine,
Channon, Davies,
O’Neil, Walker.
It was the first time
the Saints had played
at Anfield since their
manager Bill Shankly
had accused our
team of playing
“alehouse” football.
His remarks followed a
hard tackle made by
John McGrath on Alun
Evans in a match at
The Dell in the previous
September – the Saints
had won 1-0. Ironically,
in this cup tie Liverpool
had an early goal
ruled out because
of a foul by John
Toshack on McGrath.
When the Saints
played away they were
under constant attack
from most teams and
Liverpool were no
exception. The home
side’s persistence paid
off when right-back
Chris Lawler scored in
the 29th minute to give
them a half-time lead.
In the second half the
Saints pushed forward
with nothing to lose,
it being a cup game.
Jimmy Gabriel went
forward more and
more but Liverpool
kept the Saints at
bay, in large measure
as a result of Ray
Clemence making
some outstanding
saves, notably two that
frustrated Ron Davies.
In a courageous
performance the
Saints dominated
the second half – as
seen in the banner
headline in the Echo
– but this was not to
be our season for cup
success. That would
happen five years later.
The journey home was
much the same as the
trip north but a little
more subdued and
so ended the first of
my many away trips
to watch the Saints.
THE LAST PROGRAMME FEATURED
WHAT IS PROBABLY THE EARLIEST
FOOTBALL MEMORABILIA PERTAINING
TO SAINTS, GEORGE CARTER’S
SASH DATING FROM 1887.
That was the year St
Mary’s played their
first-ever competitive
fixture when entering
the newly-formed
Hampshire Junior
Cup. Since their first
match in November
1885 St Mary’s been
playing friendlies, but
the Hampshire Junior
Cup meant Saints were
chasing silverware!
Totton were accounted
for in the first round,
followed by a 10-0
demolishment of
Petersfield in the
second. Lymington
were next up and, in a
game played on a field
behind the Anchor pub
in Redbridge, St Mary’s
won 4-0 with the only
black mark being the
misbehaviour of some
of their fans forcing the
committee to apologise
to a Mr Steadfast
who owned the field.
Bournemouth Arabs
were now standing
between Saints and the
final and a close game
ensued which produced
three goals, two of
them scored by men
wearing a red sash.
The 2-1 victory meant
St Mary’s were now in
the 1887 final where
they were due to meet
another Southamptonbased
side, the Harriers.
The venue for the
game was the County
Ground in Northlands
Road which Hampshire
Cricket Club had moved
into two years before.
A keenly-fought game
ensued and finished
2-2, necessitating
a replay a fortnight
later. Approximately
600 spectators were
present as the two
teams entered the field
of play for the re-match
which, again, became
finally balanced.
Eventually, St Mary’s
established a 2-0 lead,
but the Harriers pulled
a goal back to set up
a barnstorming finish.
Press reports said
Ralph Ruffell, Saints
goalkeeper pulled off
a “grand” save in the
dying moments to
ensure the Hampshire
Junior Cup would be
presented to Charles
Bromley on the Pavilion
steps by a Mrs Winifred
Shute. Each player
received a “handsome
silver medal in a
Morocco leather case,
in commemoration of
the match”. Pictured
is the one presented
to George Carter
which remains in the
possession of his family.
Saints, naturally,
defended the cup and
in the first round were
drawn against Havant.
The County Ground
was again used as a
venue and the first 45
minutes were scoreless.
It was a different
picture in the second
half with Saints totally
in the ascendancy
as a Charles Bromley
hat-trick propelled
the team to a 5-0
win. Bromley was
studying to become a
dentist so had recently
relinquished the
captaincy to Carter.
A bye in the second
round was followed
by a clash with
Fordingbridge Turks,
the oldest club in
Hampshire, having been
formed in 1868. The
Turks from the Forest
put up a good show but
with the score poised
at 2-2 there came a
controversial moment
when Saints scored
following a disputed
corner. Fordingbridge
were incensed but the
goal stood – and Saints
added another before
the end to triumph 4-2.
Next came a semi-final
which would be talked
about in local football
circles for decades.
Cowes, from across
the Solent, were Saints’
opponents and they
brought to the County
Ground many of their
supporters who had
travelled by chartered
boats to swell the crowd
to an estimated 2,000.
After a 1-1 draw, St
Mary’s emerged
triumphant by winning
the replay 2-1, but
Cowes submitted a
written appeal to the
Hants FA claiming
that the ball had not
crossed the line for
the winning goal. A
massive row erupted,
the upshot being the
FA ruled the game
should be replayed.
The rumpus
surrounding the
appeal had stimulated
interest and a crowd
approaching 7,000 –
including 800 islanders
– gathered, the biggest
ever assembled for
a sporting event in
Hampshire, as Saints
defeated Cowes
4-1 to set up a final
against Christchurch.
The showcase match
was played at Bar End
in Winchester. Although,
after the epic semifinal
encounter with
Cowes, the final was
something of an anticlimax.
Christchurch
were ruthlessly dealt
with by St Mary’s who
won 3-0. The trophy was
therefore presented to
the club for a second
year running and the
players were presented
with an intricately
designed medals of
silver and red enamel.
The one seen here
(front and obverse)
was to awarded to
Arthur Farwell.

A 4-0 thumping at
Watford on the opening
day of the season did
little to dispel concerns
that Queens Park
Rangers would struggle
this term.
QPR conceded 71 goals
last season – the
second most in the
Championship – and
boss Gareth Ainsworth
saw his defence
continually carved
apart at Vicarage
Road. Tom Dele-
Bashiru put the hosts
ahead after just 33
seconds and Rangers
were unable to contain
their opponents,
who established a
4-0 half-time lead in
Hertfordshire.
“We’re billed as
(finishing) bottom of
the league and we’ve
got beaten 4-0,” said
Ainsworth afterwards.
“Everyone’s getting it
right so far, but we’re
going to buck this trend
and start winning some
games.”
Rangers did exactly
that the following
weekend as Sinclair
Armstrong’s first
professional goal and
Kenneth Paal’s effort
secured a 2-1 victory
at Cardiff City. Despite
a battling display,
they were beaten 1-0
at home to in-form
Ipswich Town last
weekend.
Last season was a
strange one for the
R’s. Top of the league
in late October, the
departure of Mick
Beale to Rangers (the
Glasgow version) saw
the Hoops sink like a
stone. Neil Critchley
was in charge for just
12 games, with fans’
favourite Ainsworth
taking the reins in
February.
Relegation looked
a real threat at
one stage, but QPR
eventually finished six
points above the drop
zone.
With only two clean
sheets in 14 matches
since Ainsworth took
charge, the R’s will need
a vast improvement
to avoid another sticky
season.
THE BOSS:
GARETH
AINSWORTH
Gareth Ainsworth left Wycombe
Wanderers after more than a
decade in charge to become
head coach of his beloved QPR
in February. The 50-year-old
replaced Neil Critchley, who was
sacked after just 12 games in
charge. “The club is so special to
me,” said Ainsworth at the time. “I
want to get Loftus Road rocking
again.” Ainsworth spent almost
seven years as a QPR player
before joining Wycombe in 2010,
becoming their manager two
years later. He led Wanderers to
two promotions – from League
Two in 2017/18 and League One
in 2019/20.
Before his Adams Park exit, he
was second in the list of longestserving
managers in England’s
top four divisions. As a player,
Blackburn-born Ainsworth had
notable spells as an attacking
midfielder for Preston North
End, Lincoln City, Port Vale,
Wimbledon, QPR and Wycombe.
Nicknamed “Wild Thing” due to
his love of rock and roll, longhaired
Ainsworth has fronted
several bands, the latest being
The Cold Blooded Hearts.
ONE TO WATCH:
ILIAS CHAIR
One of the bright sparks for
QPR in recent seasons, it
was no surprise to see gifted
midfielder Ilias Chair linked with
a move away from Loftus Road.
However, Gareth Ainsworth
is desperate to keep hold of
the 25-year-old, who recently
made his 200th league and cup
appearance for Rangers. Born
in Belgium but with Moroccan
heritage, Chair joined the R’s
from Lierse SK in 2017 and made
his Hoops debut at the age of
19. A loan spell at Stevenage
saw him return to west London
to become a key figure under
Mark Warburton, with Chair
taking the iconic number 10
shirt in 2020/21 following the
departure of Ebere Eze. Eight
goals that season was followed
by nine the following campaign,
form which saw Chair called up
by Morocco. He was part of the
Morocco squad which finished
fourth at the 2022 World Cup,
and scored five goals last term
as well as claiming nine assists.
THE LOCAL
LOWDOWN
WE ASKED OPPOSITION EXPERT AND SPECIALIST QPR
REPORTER TONY INCENZO TO PREVIEW TODAY’S GAME
FROM THE VISITORS’ POINT OF VIEW…
Last season was a
difficult year for QPR
after two top-half
finishes. What went
wrong?
In my opinion, the
stuffing was knocked
out of our club when
head coach Mick Beale
dramatically left for
Glasgow Rangers in
November. After that,
there were a host of
injuries to key players
while others lost form.
In addition, the home
record has been very
disappointing. We
have only won a single
game amongst the
last 17 hosted at Loftus
Road in league and
cup dating back to
October. That is the
most desolate run I
have experienced in
my 50 years supporting
the R’s.
One win and two
defeats in the league
so far – what have
you made of Rangers’
start?
A mixed bag. Losing
4-0 at Watford on the
opening day was a
huge body blow before
we turned it around
with a richly deserved
2-1 success away to
Cardiff City. Then there
were some real positive
signs in last Saturday’s
home game versus
Ipswich Town. Rangers
performed very well in
the first half. Indeed,
Sinclair Armstrong
was extremely unlucky
not to break through
mustering a fierce shot
that rattled both posts
before squirming to
safety. However, injuries
to Sinclair and reigning
QPR Player of the
Season Sam Field after
the hour mark were
pivotal. Ipswich seized
control and scored the
only goal.
What is the fan feeling
towards head coach
Gareth Ainsworth, and
what changes has he
implemented since
being appointed in
February?
we march on » SAINTS » 45
Gareth was a playing
legend at Loftus
Road as part of our
2003/04 team that
gained promotion to
the Championship.
I can still envisage
his buccaneering
forays down the
wing including one
game where he
unsuccessfully tried
to run off a broken
leg. Therefore, I
always felt he would
return to Rangers as
manager. However,
he inherited a losing
side when he took over
but did well to avoid
relegation courtesy of
vital victories away to
Burnley and Stoke City
in April. Since then, he
has been working hard
to bring necessary
leadership qualities into
the camp by signing
experienced players
like Asmir Begovic,
Morgan Fox, Steve Cook
and Jack Colback.
Young striker Sinclair
Armstrong is being
tipped for a breakout
season. What does he
bring to the team?
The word I use to
describe Sinclair is
“raw”. He has so much
raw potential at the
age of 20. Pace and
power combined with
a never-say-die 100
per cent attitude which
the fans love. Now
that he has scored his
first competitive goal
in the win at Cardiff,
I am sure Sinclair will
notch at least 15 this
season and make his
full international debut
for the Republic of
Ireland. His attributes
are very similar to
those of Les Ferdinand
who we idolised so
much as a legendary
QPR marksman. But I
have to say Sinclair’s
current progress is
better than Ferdinand
achieved at the same
age. The young ‘Sir Les’
was eventually sent
out on loan to Besiktas
before he really started
to make an impact at
Loftus Road.
Who else should Saints
look out for?
Ilias Chair almost
scored from 50 yards
against Ipswich last
week but visiting
keeper Vaclav Hladky
backpedalled to
conjure the ball over
the crossbar. Chair is a
maverick who can win
a game on his own.
How do you see
the game going on
12. In loving memory of
Royston Kenneth Warwick
(24.10.36-09.06.23), who
has passed away aged 86.
Royston’s son Kevin says: “He
took my brothers Stephen
and Nicholas to their first
game in 1967 – a 6-2 win
vs Aston Villa in 1967 – and
they’ve been hooked ever
since! My first game was
a 2-2 draw vs Wimbledon
in 1988. He also took us to
Europe to watch Saints vs
Athletic Bilbao. His favourite
memory, though, was when
we all watched a 3-1 away
cup win at Spurs in 1990. .
RIP, dad. Saints and football
mad – and sadly missed.
13. William (Bill) Dell
was a loyal QPR fan who
always used to attend
home games, until he sadly
passed away on 20th June
2023. We all miss and love
you so much. Forever in
our hearts. RIP dad and
RAINBOW SAINTS
TODAY IS SOUTHAMPTON PRIDE AND WE’RE
DELIGHTED TO BE HIGHLIGHTING OUR CONTINUED
WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH RAINBOW SAINTS, THE
OFFICIAL LGBTQ+ SUPPORTERS' GROUP FOR THE CLUB.
Rainbow Saints was
founded in 2021
following our “No
Place for Homophobia
in Southampton”
campaign. The group
was formed by our
supporters to create a
safe space for LGBTQ+
people and allies to
enjoy the beautiful
game at St Mary’s and
support the club to be
more inclusive of the
LGBTQ+ community.
Despite being one of
the youngest LGBTQ+
supporters' groups,
Rainbow Saints
has grown to over
70 members and
continues to welcome
new members. The
group regularly attend
matches together
and have a vibrant
group chat where
they discuss all things
LGBTQ+ football.
This season Rainbow
Saints has expanded
its committee to set
56 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
up grassroots events
to encourage more
LGBTQ+ people to
engage with the
club. This includes
teaming up with
Saints Foundation to
run football training
sessions for LGBTQ+
people, setting away
day trips with their
members and provide
opportunities for
LGBTQ+ people to
come to their first
match at St Mary’s. All
of this while remaining
devoted fans of
both the Men’s and
Women’s teams.
To recognise
Southampton Pride, we
spoke with Rainbow
Saints members to find
out what the group
means to them:
“Rainbow Saints is
a safe space and a
friendly community
where LGBTQ+ folks
and allies can connect
and share in the highs
and lows of being a
Saints fan.”
“Rainbow Saints is a
space where I feel safe
to talk about all things
football with likeminded
people.”
“For me, Rainbow
Saints means
togetherness. We hear
a lot at the moment
about football at its
worst but football
at its very best is a
community.”
“I’ve made some
amazing connections
and had some
amazing experiences
and I found my love
of football once again
because of this group.”
“For me, being part
of Rainbow Saints
means being part
of something bigger
than myself. Being part
of something that’s
affecting change
not only within our
community but on
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 57
a national level and
maybe one day
throughout the entire
sport as a whole.”
“Growing up, I had a
Season Ticket with my
family and football
was a family event.
My coming out in
2011 led to my family
estrangement and left
me without a group
of people to share my
passion with – I felt like
football wasn't a place
for me. I avoided St
Mary's for 10 years until
I found Rainbow Saints
and built new football
connections – it also
helped me to see
football is a place for
all of us and reigned
my desire to return. I’m
now in my second year
as a Season Ticket
Holder.”
Southampton Pride
takes place annually
and was launched in
response to the horrific
attack on the LGBTQ+
nightclub, Pulse, in the
USA in 2016.
Since launching,
Southampton Pride’s
mission has been to
promote equality and
diversity, advance
education and
eliminate homophobic
and transphobic
discrimination within
our community.
The event itself is a
family friendly LGBTQ+
safe space, situated in
Guildhall Square and
is free for everyone to
enjoy, with food, drinks
and entertainment
throughout the day
as well as a buzzing
market hall.
