will be music to the ears of his growing fanbase
as he has released his most powerful single to
date, bringing together stunning vocals with
moving lyrics in an ode to his new baby
daughter, Bonnie. Exploring the ups and downs
of early fatherhood, the unmissable milestones
and the sense of responsibility that comes from
the moment of their first cry, Bonnie’s Song will
resonate with anyone who has opened their
PHILIP SETH CAMPBELL :: At Hoxton Hall,
London. The Scottish singer-songwriter has
unveiled “Magical West”, the first single to be
taken from his forthcoming solo album ‘City
Lights’ (out 1 September 2023 via Assai
Records). The artist has also announced an
extensive UK and Ireland tour for Autumn 2023,
as well as three in-store shows in his native
Scotland to mark the album’s release. An
amalgamation of Campbell’s life and career up
until this point, the new record unfolds like a
series of cinematic snapshots captured in
timeless technicolour. From new single and
album opener “Magic West” to plucky ballads
like “Break The Curse” and “Sober Boy”, and
from the bluesy soulful title-track “City Lights”
to riled-up and rocky “Gut City Blues”, the LP
sees the artist traverse time and genre with a
deft sense of musicality that glints and glimmers
like an unearthed trove of deep-buried treasure.
great artist he is today. He has sung in church
choirs, been a session singer for niche labels
Summerhall / NEHH presents ..... JP
COOPER :: At Summerhall, Edinburgh. 7pm. It’s
often said that today’s musicians don’t “pay their
dues” in the way previous generations did,
whether it was the Beatles’ residencies at the
Star Club in Hamburg or David Bowie hauling
himself around clubs for years. However, JP
Cooper has done all this and much more. He
may now be scoring multi-platinum hits and
collaborating with the likes of Stormzy. However,
He’s been the guy standing outside a venue,
handing out flyers for his music and tracks on
burned CDs. He’s humped gear into the back of
his Dad’s Nissan Micra to drive 200 miles to play
for 20 people, a sound engineer and his dog.
GIGspotlight .....
Dougie MacLean chooses Dunfermline’s
Alhambra for Special Rare Performance!
GIGnotes :: Alhambra, Dunfermline - Saturday, 2 September at 7.30pm. Ticket available online @
www.alhambradunfermline.com or call Kingsgate box office on 01383 733666 (Mon-Sat 11-4pm)
“I’m so looking forward to my
concert at the Alhambra in
September! It’s one of those
venues which still has that ‘old
theatre’ feel, with the proscenium
arch over the stage and seating in
layers…up to ‘the gods … where
even a big audience feels close”
comments Dougie MacLean.
It’s been a surprising and adventurous route out of covid and lockdown
for Scotland’s singer songwriter, composer and wonderful performer
(who wrote the song Caledonia and the tune The Gael!). Dougie
MacLean has not contracted Covid to date…but it has changed his life!
Pre 2020 MacLean was continuously touring the world performing. For
almost 50 years, from Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall to Carnegie Hall in
New York, from the Festival Theatre in London to the Sydney Opera
House his concerts and festival appearances have delighted audiences
of all ages. Now his music is reaching places where he has never set
foot! Due to the success of his regular broadcast of live streamed
concerts which began on March 20th 2020 from his Old Schoolhouse in
Perthshire (renamed the Butterstone Global Streaming Theatre!) his
worldwide audience has been consolidated and grown into a truly global
phenomenon! Over 3.5 million people in almost 70 countries are known
to have tuned in. Audiences have watched on phone, tablet, laptop or
Smart TV from every continent, from Iceland to India and New Zealand
to Brazil as well as every part of Europe and North America.
He’s also been able to deliver several live streamed concerts from his
atmospheric Old Farmhouse on the west coast of the Island of Lewis in
the Outer Hebrides. The four camera broadcasts with great sound,
lighting and staging, transport viewers right into MacLean’s special
spaces where he encourages involvement in his much loved songs and
engaging stories. He even has his global audience joining in choruses
and dancing to fiddle tunes!
There continues to be volumes of feedback every week on social media
plus emails and letters describing how the concerts and Dougie’s songs
are giving so many viewers something to look forward to … how
appreciated they are in these still often unpredictable and disturbing
times.
Dougie still glows with enthusiasm commenting “I’m amazed and
still surprised at how much I enjoy the Live Streamed concerts. It’s
definitely a very satisfying experience that continually brings out the
unexpected and it’s somehow really gratifying to know that there’s an
audience all over the world who genuinely appreciate my music … they
choose to tune in and then they respond. It’s quite magical!”
This also makes his chosen handful of Dougie MacLean concert and
festival performances in any year all the more special … and enthusiasts
for his music are coming from many different countries to enjoy his
performance at one of his favourite venues, the historic Alhambra in
Dunfermline on Saturday 2 September.
In between the performances Dougie finds time for his fascination with
Fergie tractors, old Honda mopeds, archery, bee-keeping and of late the
collecting and restoring of Singer sewing machines from the 1880s to
1960s! He also joins with his son Jamie MacLean in their studio for
composing and recording music for film and TV and for MacLean’s ever
popular albums … he may just have a new album ready for his special
September concert!
John produced his debut movie - Otway the Movie: The Story of Rock n Roll’s Greatest Failure. The film was then
voted the 2nd best film of the year in a poll of its readers conducted by The Guardian newspaper. Otway recorded a
popular series of Face-book live shows during the 2020 Lockdown in the UK which has a regular audience of 10,000
viewers (or two and a half Royal Albert Halls which is Otway’s preferred numbering system). The constant gigging
4th Dimension, was released on 6 April 2017
Prize in the same year. Their latest album "Here
Is Everything" was conceived during the weight
and worry of lockdown in a pandemic. Lives
became seismically different, whilst every day a
carbon copy of the last. So, whilst Covid pulled
the duvet tightly up over our heads, it was also
the unlikely backdrop to welcoming new life.
THE ANIMALS :: At MacArts, Galashiels. In
1964 a wave of new energetic rock and roll
swept over the youth of the world. On the crest
of this wave was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones
and of course The Animals. From the banks of
the River Tyne came the North East's offering; a
brand of rhythm ‘n blues that the whole world
seemed to grasp greedily. 2017 marked founder
member John Steel’s 60th year as performing
musician. Back in 1957 John Steel along with
fellow Animals co-founder Eric Burdon began
playing their trade in and around their native
Tyneside with not even the slightest inkling that
they would, in few years, find themselves part of
a group that would be forever bracketed with
the very best of British music
Scotland to mark the album’s release. An
amalgamation of Campbell’s life and career up
timeless technicolour. From new single and
album opener “Magic West” to plucky ballads
