RESUME

I am an Architectural and Urban

designer with eleven years of

experience in academic and practical

field. I learned from my deep studies

and work in the two fields, to have a

clear zoom out view of the project and

how to zoom in for details to achieve

the best for the user on short and

long term. In the end, what creates

unique design is the idea/concept

generated from the surroundings,

needs, and user behaviors. I got the

master thesis in 2016 in heritage

management from Stuttgart University

and Ain Shams University.

OBSERVATORY HOUSES

OBSERVATORY HOUSES

The sky-lounge took place in the new extension connecting the me- dieval fortress with the new project

and inside the remaining parts of the fort. The towers in the fort are used as observatory towers for

experimenting and training who are interested in astronomy. The cen- tral plaza was chosen to be in

the new extension in front of St. Peter church including the information zone and the bookshop, from

where the visitors are flexible to choose to a suitable touristic route they pre- fer to follow. Each route

has a purpose or specific sites to discover.

23

The pitched roof in the village is transformed into the new observation houses in the shape of a frame

that covers the solid parts of it, and this structure works as a unit which can be repeated when the

area of the house increases.

2017-2018

The Observatory houses, appartments and villa are designed by attaching two modules of the pitched

roof frame, where the bedrooms and the observation zone placed on the first floor, the services, the

reception, wellness area, games area, meditation zone and the pool on the ground floor.

OBSERVATORY HOUSES

25

OBSERVATORY HOUSES

The proposal aims to shut down as much as possible of disturbing noises on the ground to empower

the sky and let the stars take control over the site; its effect has reflected the forest translated in scattered

units between the wild landscape. The dark, mild and engraved in hills units allow the starts to

spread the feeling of relaxation, mystery, and spiritual atmosphere.

Roccascalegna village has houses which are featured with their pitched roofs. The way these

houses were designed inspired the proposal to create rectangular units with a nontraditional

proportion of pitched roofs. The ratio of each pitched roof differs from unit to another according

to the perfect angle to view the castle with the backgrounded sky and stars.

The mass plan shows the scattered units integrated with the landscape. A scanning of the

trees was done to choose the best places where the units can be installed and be able to see

clearly the sky and the fort while sitting indoor. The units were installed between the trees

and cutting the trees wasn’t an option to preserve the nature and prevent the buildings from

taking control over the nature. For the same reason, each unit was designed in its own without

connecting them in one form that will invade the nature and decrease the Nordic feeling

of it.

The materials and the color of the units aim to disappear and integrate with nature with a very

low lighting which allows the visitors to see their way to the unit at night and at the same

time don’t disturb the sky and the stars from taking-control.

A. DARB AL-LABANA

Darb Al-Labana project is one of the huge heritage management, restoration, aduptive resuse project

in Egypt. Frist it all started with an analysis to the condition of each building in the area. Then survey

with the resendest to know thier needs, expectations and problems. Then a decision for each building

were taken for being demolished or preserved, preserved all or just some parts or only the elevation,

changing the current use or keeping it as it is. Some new stakeholders were involved like investors

who bought some buildings to make a comples of old-modern design for houses, shops or cafes. The

project has 3 big pilot projects related to the investors and the rest are for the main residents who will

be relocated for only the time of the project with incintives, then they will return bake to thier homes

if they want.

New pLans of Pilot project

The outline of the project was taken from the current outlines

of the 9 buildings if they are still standing or even

demolished by tracing the old outline. The aim is to keep

the typolgy of the buildings the same as it was to keep the

sense of the historical place alive. There are paths opened

between the buildings to be one complete project and a

bridge also connecting the right and left parts for a smother

circulation flow.

CURRENT PLANS OF THE 9 BUILDINGS

The 9 buildings were separated each one has its own entrance,

different use, and users. There are some buildings

demolished and now an empty land. Some are standing

with bad condition and beautiful elevation that the project

tends to restore and demolish the rest for a new buildings

looks the same as the old.

more shops, which was a reason to make an extension with including 2

more buildings in the surrounding to add more 4 shops, a stair case and

Revitalization of Al-mahmoudiya canal

CONCEPT

2014-2016

Through the accumulation of many factors,

Al-Mahmoudia canal developed a very

bad digestive system where the inputs

are mainly deluted water from the Nile

pollutants of wastewater and garbage

coming from the factories, residential areas

and the forms, the outputs are of harmful

nature to the surrounding ecologically

the water unusable and the conventianal

wastewater treatments produces more

gas emmissions, economically there are

no investments gained from the use of the

canal, socially there is activities held on the

waterfront of the canal as it is used to be.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SQUARE

ADAPTIVE REUSE OF OKELLE MENASCE

As one of the most prominent buildings on the square, Okelle Menasce

was chosen as an example to be applied to the rest of the

historical buildings on the square.

The Okelle was built between 1883 and 1887 and designed by the

architect Antonio Lasciac in Neo-Renaissance style, mixing the

original Wekala and the Milano Gallery.

The proposal suggests a solution to each problem:

-Treansferring the informal shops to another building on the

square.

- Reorganizing the commercial signs.

- Clearing the court for cultural activities and events.

111

Negotiating the Future

Aswan and the high dam represent a geographical obstruction of the Nile. This landscape

obstruction evolves into a disturbance of the Nubians settlements on the islands with the

elimination of agriculture and trading as their main economic activities, being forced to rely

on tourism, which jeopardizes their identity. After some discussion the aim of the catalogue

shifted from a more geographical reflection including the islands of Elephantine, Soleil, The

botanical garden and Hessa to the particular situation of the S islands trapped between the

two dams on Aswan Lake.

The trapped condition of Aswan Lake islands; Awad, Philae, Bigga and Hessa, increases their

reliance on tourism in order to survive. Nonetheless the Nubian community is aware and

reluctant of letting go their identity. The aim of this catalogue is to give a critical view of

the islands imbalance present and future if equilibrium between livability and identity is not

reached. In order to keep a Nubian identity it is necessary to hove a balance between the

traditional way of life and new economic systems.

Dichotomies are understood as a contrast between two matters that are represented Gs being

opposed or entirely different. In this port, we utilized the notion of ‘dichotomies’ to highlight

on interesting urban topics in Djerba Island. As we try to capture these phenomena at a cerain

time, we sitress out on the ideo thet these dichotomies clong with thecaptured phenomena

continuously undergo G process of formation and change.

Snapshots in time

Tipping the balance

In order to understand the current status of the threetrapped islands, a snapshot of the

cotaract islands’ history was token. The history of this area has been subject to three

crucial transformations that have changed the face of the islands; socially, economically,

environmentally and spatially. In this section, an analysis of the transformation that

happened was carried out starting from the floeding period before having any dams, then

after building the Aswan dam reaching thecurrent situation of having also the high

(In}balance on the islands

The previous section illustrated thebeginning of the imbalanced islands’ situation, wherethey

are trapped between preserving identity and maintaining liverbility. This section examines

the impact of the foced forces that could lead to extreme scenarios thus fipping the balance

Through a set of collages, we show two scenarios First scenario is the islands’ mutation ond

loss of identity as a result of the excessive tourism forces. Second scenario is the complete

death of the islands and the loss of livability as a result ofcompletly resisting the forces and

holding fo identity. Tipping the balance.

Detached from their natural chain of the firstcataract, thetrapped islands on the Aswan

lake are faced with different forces that have resulted in their current state. Using the

concept of a balance this section will discuss the effects of the forces on the Identity and

liveability of the islands.

Intervention strategies

Apart from the open space that is proposed to be a playground, the three blocks in the site define

an existing open space that is the intervention point for this proposal. Since the space is currently

underutilized, with effective programing and phasing as a strategy, it is possible to create an active

self-actualization platform. Accordingly there will be four phases of projects in the camp all of which

will be part of a program to assist refugees gain a sense of control and feel responsible to their space.

The major advantage of phasing these very similar projects is to become more accurate in thetechniques

used, the amount of material needed and the time it would take to yield produce. Moreover it

would be easier i to get sponsors and testthe willingness of the refugees to engage in the project.

VIRTUAL REALITY TOWARDS PRESERVING ALEXANDRIA

HERITAGE

Abstract

Heritage preservation,

Virtual reality, Public

awareness, Alexandria

historical buildings.

One of the biggest problems facing Alexandria nowadays is the

ongoing destruction of the historic buildings to accommodate the new

high-rise residential buildings done by the construction mafia, with the

aid of the landlords and the silence of the locals, to gain a

considerable quantity of financial profits in a remarkably short period.

Through previous data collection and surveys, it was concluded that

most of the residents don't have an adequate consciousness about

the significance of these structures and the destruction actions

happening to it. Here arises the role of virtual reality, where the

research attempts to discuss its impact on raising the knowledge,

enhancing the participatory heritage conservation process and its

ability in encouraging the residents to save their heritage from

destruction.
