Congratulations to Jacob Doll who recently passed his audition for active duty Marine Bands and will now be a Marine musician in the future. The former Bright American Legion post recently installed a bench at Bright Park (State Line Rd) honoring all veterans. The bench is located near the swings area… stop by and try it out. North Dearborn Library will hold its Third annual Veteran’s Day Social for all Veterans and spouses in November. Door prizes, good food, and excellent fellowship. The exact date will be in next month’s edition. The Lions (SE Indiana) will be conducting their annual eye tests at Bright Elementary School on Sept. 21. A big congratulations to Ruth Ann and Ray Schlemmer who celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary on Aug. 15… married in 1953. After his service in the US Air Force, Ruth Ann and Ray settled in Bright, Ruth Ann’s hometown. Ruth Ann and Ray have two children, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. We had several family members visiting during July and August. My nieces and nephews Shawn, Chelsey, and Brooke Andres from San Antonio, TX; Jason, Dylan, and Davis Andres from Eclectic, AL; my brother Ron Andres from Panama City, FL; his daughters Morgan Andres from Durham, NC; and Janine Andres from Cincinnati. Megan Fox came home from Nashville, TN as well. They enjoyed spending time with Mom and Grandma, Nettie Andres, as well as the St. Leon Firemen’s Festival. The Best Little Oktoberfest is set for Oct 6-7 from mid-afternoon until midnight at the St. Joseph American Legion Post 464. This year we’re selling four hundred Big Bucks Raffle tickets at $50 each for the Big Bucks Raffle prize of $5,000. (See ad on this page) We have created an atmosphere of celebration rather than just a place to eat and drink some beer. We call this celebrating the harvest, a time to relax and enjoy the occasion. Oktoberfest tradition dates back over two hundred years in Germany when the Emperor had a wedding for his daughter in October. Most of the people around St. Leon originated from Germany, so this is a natural fit. The beer garden features a variety of German and Domestic brews, and the meals are substantial. In closing (from my Sis-inlaw Mary)… It’s not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived. Callie Barrett celebrated her fourteenth birthday. famous fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes, green beans, coleslaw and dessert. Tickets can be purchased at the door for the chicken dinner. A super tasty smoked, thick-cut pork chop is also served with German potato salad, green beans, sauerkraut, coleslaw and dessert. Any of the dinners may also be purchased with a raffle stub. The one event that is so much fun is the pie auction. We usually have high drama as the bids go higher and higher for those pies. We usually have peach, custard, cherry, blackberry, apple... Music adds to the fun. To get the party started Friday, we always have a good showing for Karaoke. The festive Saturday night is topped off with German and American music to dance to. You might even see the chicken dance. Proceeds are used to support American Legion programs like Boys and Girls State. The Legion provides the color guard at military funerals, and contributions to the community. We make visits to service members at the VA Hospital in Cincinnati several times annually and support many other qualified charities. Happy anniversary to Jennie and Jerry Maune on Oct. 11. October 2023 THE BEACON Page 3B HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE By Vivian Kist Community Correspondent hvl@goBEACONnews.com A noticeable change in activity can be found around Hidden Valley Lake – fewer children are out and about during the day, yellow busses are on the roads again, and many after-school activities now dominate schedules. We wish all students and teachers a successful school year filled with positive academic challenges, the building of strong meaningful relationships, and the creation of great memories that will last a lifetime! HVL Garden Club is excited to sponsor its annual Fall Bunco Fundraiser on Sept. 30. The proceeds from this event are used to purchase the beautiful plants and flowers that adorn our community’s common areas. Speaking of the HVL Garden Club, they generate much anticipation each month as we look forward to learning who will win the Yard of the Month honor. Cynthia and David Lebourveau on Newcom Knoll were the August winners. Their house was chosen not only because of the many yard amenities but also because they have a beautiful butterfly sanctuary. Mark your calendars! The very popular HVL O ur Community Yard Sale is on Sept. 23-24 from 9 A.M. until 1 P.M. each day. Begin now to clean out your closets and garage to sell those no-longerneeded items. The Hanoi’s Lost Child Foundation’s Third Annual Golf Outing was a huge success. A surprise guest, Mike Dobbyn, was there to help raise awareness for this very special charity founded by Ryan Wilson. Mr. Dobbyn still holds the world record for the longest drive (551 yards in 2007). The Labor Day Bash is truly a labor of love for the HVL Civic Club. Let’s all send out a big thank you to the Civic Club members for their tireless efforts and volunteering to make this end-of-summer experience so much fun. The event contributes to the excitement and beauty of our Hidden Valley Lake community. SEI Fiber has brought the benefits of fiber optic to Hidden Valley Lake residents. New streaming offers are available for viewing at the POA Community Center. The Communities Long Drive World Champion Mike Dobbyn with several HLCF attendees. inaugural fiber installation was at the home of Donald and Robin Bohn. The installation was recorded with a 6-minute video that can be viewed online. For additional information or questions call the POA office or Southeastern REMC directly at 800- 689-4111. Georgetown Road between Fairway Drive and SR 1 will be closed on Oct. 7 from 9 A.M. until noon for a litter clean-up. Volunteers will gather at 8:30 A.M. at the exact meeting location TBD in the next few weeks. Amy Wilson from HVL was instrumental in organizing this clean-up effort. The Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Bright Fire Department will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all volunteers. The Dearborn County Highway Department will pick up the bags of trash that are collected. We owe all of them a big thank you as this clean-up will allow us to better appreciate the beautiful scenery as the fall colors develop. LOGAN By Susan Carson Community Correspondent logan@goBEACONnews.com Whose idea was it anyway that I should plant a garden this year? Apparently, it was me! In the past, my gardens have been mediocre at best. I didn’t plant until Memorial Day, so I thought I was running late. Once I had the ground tilled, I put in corn, green beans, Lima beans, zucchini, cucumbers, red and green peppers, kale, and spinach. Then my brother Mark brought some more plants and seeds to add to the things I had already planted, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Little did we know that we would get plenty of rain and sunshine over the next few weeks. Everything grew to far exceed our expectations. It wasn’t long before we were harvesting more than we could eat or give away. Cucumbers became refrigerator pickles, zucchini was shredded to make bread and Just one of the many plentiful crops from the garden. cookies, corn was eaten on the cob and frozen for later, and green beans eaten fresh or frozen. It’s been a great experience having plenty of produce, not only for ourselves but enough to share with others. My favorite person that I love to share with is 99-year-old Ann Jeffries of Logan. She loves cucumbers! It’s a delight to share with her when she giggles and smiles as she thanks me while I walk out the door. Neighbor Linda Lyness and I witnessed an interesting pattern in a sand trap while golfing one day. It seems some deer had taken a walk through the sand.
