We are in an era of unprecedented growth, set to continue for the
foreseeable future. 2018 saw student population reach one thousand
for the first time and 2019’s Year Seven intake is projected to be close
to 200 students.
We have been working for some time with the Ministry of Education
developing a comprehensive campus plan. The first stage of this
development is due to begin in May next year with a two story block
catering for The Arts and Technology on the ground floor and Year
Seven and Eight flexible learning spaces on the upper floor. The
second stage includes a new library and careers space with more
homeroom learning spaces. The next stages include a communal
whare building, admin and staff facilities and gymnasium extension.
We are also modernising some existing spaces to ensure our staff
and students will have the facilities they deserve as we continue to
strive to be the best possible learning community.
The Board of Trustees are currently reviewing our uniform and
although there are no planned changes for next year, they will
instigate a staged introduction to any agreed changes over the next
few years.
2018 was a year with many highlights. A personal highlight for me
was joining 8SL at their midwinter camp at Berwick. This was my first
time at this particular camp and it was a personal challenge to keep
up but I was ably supported by the students, staff and parents. The
infamous ‘mud run’ has to be experienced to be believed (but may
be a oncer!). It is good to be reminded how EOTC (Education Outside
the Classroom) provides such a valuable opportunity to challenge
individuals and to see how young people can lead and support their
mates through adversity so well.
Another highlight was our college musical, ‘Catch Me If You Can,’
which was performed to full houses throughout the entire season.
This was a slick, sophisticated musical challenge which a huge cast
of students and staff met head on with absolute commitment and
enthusiasm. The journey the cast went on together was a joy to
behold and proved to be a collaborative triumph.
Witnessing the unbridled joy from the students watching screens
in the gym when Zoi Sadowski-Synnott won a bronze medal at the
PyeongChang Olympics was the start of a school-wide celebration.
We believe that it is a New Zealand first for any school to have an
olympic medalist while still enrolled. Everyone was just so thrilled for
Zoi and it made us feel so proud as the whole country celebrated one
of our own.
One of the real strengths of Mount Aspiring College is the continued
focus on forming positive relationships and working successfully
alongside each other. Almost eighty Year 11 and 12 students applied
this year for Committee, House and Head Student positions for 2019.
This was a tremendous response and exemplifies to me the wonderful
spirit or wairua at the college.
I hope you have all enjoyed your year and wish you a safe and happy
holiday. If you are leaving us, I wish you well and remind you that you
will always be welcome so come and see us any time. I thank you all
and I remain very proud to be part of this amazing school.
BoT Chair Report
Kia ora koutou
On behalf of the Board of Trustees I would like to thank
everyone who has made MAC a great place to work and study
in 2018. The year got off to a great start with Year 13 Student
Zoi Sadowski-Synnott winning a bronze medal at the Olympic
Winter Games in PyeongChang and finished with Phoebe Young
competing creditably in multiple cycling events at the Olympic
Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires. In between those events
there were a multitude of students that did themselves and
MAC proud in academic, community, cultural and sporting
endeavours - hats off to all of you.
Two items have dominated the Board of Trustees agenda in 2018.
Firstly the uniform review which is being driven by a passionate
group of board, student, staff and parent representatives. This
is a massive task and is progressing nicely. The uniform survey
highlighted a desire for changes to be made to the current
uniform and the committee are currently looking at possible
designs options to bring back to the community. The second issue
is the development of a campus that can cope with our projected
growth. We still require a couple of important issues to be resolved
and we continue to work with the Ministry of Education around the
old Wanaka swimming pool site and getting phases one and two
of the campus development plan constructed concurrently so we
can keep up with the growth curve rather than lagging behind it.
To the students leaving MAC at the end of 2018, I hope you will
carry memories with you of great friends, great experiences and
an inspiring learning environment. We wish you all the best for
whatever your future has to hold.
Finally, thank you to Joe Strawson our Student Board of Trustees Representative who has immersed himself in the Board conversations
this year and has played a big part in the uniform review. We look forward to welcoming Bronson Toghill to the Board in 2019.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer and all the best for an amazing 2019.
Nga mihi
Head Girl, Head Boy
and
Student BoT Rep
I remember being Year 6, petrified to move on from my
memories and the environment of Hawea Flat School.
When I found myself in Clare Scurr’s class, I was surprised
how quickly I settled into MAC life. Throughout my
seven years at MAC, I have seen the strong interaction
between the juniors and seniors and, as Head Girl, I
wanted to continue this inclusive environment. I wanted
to be the friendly face of the school and to be involved in decision making
for the future of Mount Aspiring College.
There are many opportunities which came about with this role, such
as reading the Hawea roll of honour at the Hawea ANZAC Dawn Service.
I was involved in the discussion with the architects regarding the new
buildings and upgrade of the school and the Vision 2050 workshop with the
QLDC. Our fortnightly senior student executive committee meetings have
been a memorable experience as we had the privilege to give a student
perspective and voice on matters within the school. The Students in the
Community programme, Girls 1 st XI football tournament, orienteering and
making sure I keep on top of my academic studies have made it a very
busy but awesome year!
The knowledge I have gained throughout the year has helped prepare me
for university and the future. Next year I am studying a Bachelor of Teaching
and Learning (primary) and will be able to transfer many of the skills I have
learned, such as public speaking, interpersonal skills, working with students,
teachers and other adults within the wider community. I would recommend
all students to apply for leadership positions as they are an enjoyable but
challenging way to become immersed within the school, whether it be
service, sport, academic or cultural, House Leaders, Board of Trustees Student
Representative or Head Student.
I am very grateful for the opportunities and support the college has provided
over the last seven years, the hard work the teachers have put in, also the
encouragement my family has provided. I can’t wait to see what the future
holds and start writing the new chapter of my life!
Bella Fraser
Having the opportunity to serve as the 2018 Head
Boy has been as much fun and insightful as it was
a challenge, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every
moment of it. I am wildly grateful to, and humbled by,
the people who helped me get there. Looking back, I
believe that it was the moments in my schooling years
that stretched my comfort zone even a little that are
now my fondest memories. Times where I was put
into situations or places that challenged me, like cross country or speech
presentations, are the experiences of high school that I now reflect on with
nostalgia. Everyone takes time to find their feet in different aspects of their
lives and great things take time but that's what truly makes them great.
I have been extremely lucky to be able to work with Bella this year, she
is a wonderful role model and a trustworthy leader. Her organizational
skills are second to none and she has inspired me to invest in a diary for
my future.
To each and every one of you, I wish a truly memorable time at school
filled with experiences, challenges and beyond. Our paths may even
meet in the future, until then… try to catch me if you can. The difference
between the ordinary and the extraordinary is that little bit extra - give
people something to talk about, or a reason to smile.
Where Are They Now?
Tell us Luke, what are you doing these days?
When you were little, were you the kind of kid that
wished you could stay up as late as you liked,
watching movies and eating junk food? Your
parents always being the boring, responsible Fun
Police, telling you “no, you have to go to bed”. As
you grew older, did the boundaries slip, did your
parents relent, did you get to stay up late? Did
you realise after the first few late nights that your
parents might just have been onto something
with that whole “early to bed, early to rise” thing?
Did you find that having the freedom to choose
more often than not just made you choose the
boring, “healthy” option yourself?
That’s my life now.
The best thing about studying and living away
from home is the freedom I have. My time is
now entirely my own, so if I want to skip today’s
lectures and just lay in bed all day, I can. No one
cares. The problem is, I’m the one responsible
for myself now, and I know that missing a day’s
worth of learning is probably counterproductive
towards my university career. I can stay up till
three in the morning watching Netflix every single
night, but I know that then I’ll be completely
useless the next day, so I don’t. In my opinion the
absolute freedom can be the most challenging
part of university, but easily the most rewarding.
Figuring out how best to spend my time by
balancing study, fun, sport and most importantly
sleep isn’t easy, but does make for some darn
good times.
These days I’m playing hockey for the university
club, playing guitar in a band made up of other
first-years, and trying to exercise enough to
balance out all the food my hall feeds me. I’m
in the second semester of my first year of a
Mechatronics Engineering degree, which is eating
up most of my time and only keeping me up most
nights. It’s a fine balancing act, but I’ve always
preferred having what I call an 'insane, crazy,
hectic, busy!' schedule to an empty one.
I see. How would you say MAC life prepared
you for this wonderful misadventure?
To be honest, words can’t explain the sheer
gratitude and respect I have for MAC. Words
can’t express the pride I feel being able to call it
my school. Words can’t come close to describing
the help and support I received from my teachers,
or the friendships that I made.
So I won’t waste them.
Suffice to say MAC gave me every single tool
and opportunity that got me here today (as
well as the motivation to do so) and I will always
remember it fondly.
Thanks Luke, that was beatiful... wait, are you...
crying?
No, my eyes are just a little sweaty today.
Uh huh. Finally, what advice would you give to
the folks at school on making the most of it?
I would say “make the most of every opportunity,
you’re so lucky to live where you do, live in the
moment”, but if they’re not sick of hearing that
by now they’ve probably not been listening hard
enough. No, what I will say is simply “have fun”.
Taking school seriously is always a good idea, but
if they ask you to write a couple of paragraphs
describing your life at uni, don’t be afraid to inject
just a little humour. Bad example maybe.
What I’m trying to say (here come the clichés)
is that one day you will look back on your high
school days fondly, and you should do your best
to make good memories to reflect on. Work hard,
but when its playtime, just have some fun. Do
cool stuff with your weekends. Get some hobbies.
You get it, just have some fun. But not too much.
Also not too little. You’ll figure it out.
That’s it from me, always a pleasure to be able to
impart some of my wisdom.
Yours truly,
Luke Burke
For over 16 years I have innocently grown up in
the small bubble of a town that we all love to call
home - Wanaka. Even though Wanaka has been
a treat to grow up in, I reached my time where I
was ready to leave and see what else the world
has to hold for me, a feeling which I’m sure many
seniors will have growing upon them as they get
closer to their departure from school and home.
This year I have moved three hours down the road
to Dunedin where I am studying a Bachelor of
Nursing at the Otago Polytechnic. I cannot explain
the feeling of finally being able to study something
you are passionate about and what you want to
do for the next chapter of your life, if not the rest
of your life. To think one day I’ll be helping save
people’s lives is a scary thought for me (and
whoever ends up in the hospital bed in front of me),
but I am literally counting down the days until they
let me into the hospital… I CAN’T WAIT!
I think it’s impossible to be fully prepared for the
change of moving to University or Polytechnic.
I was extremely shocked with the expectation
and the standard of work required just to pass a
paper and the time required to make passing a
reality. It’s hard not to get caught up in the social
and sporting life and come home to realize the
mountains of work you still have to do when you
really just want to get some sleep. It’s been a real
life lesson for me to learn how to time manage
and set myself a plan in order to stay on top of
everything and is something I’m still figuring out.
Advice I have for students at MAC would be to
make sure you make the most of school. Everyone
tells you it’s the easiest and best time of your life
and… they are right. I thought they were all lying
but now I really do know how easy school is and
how you should embrace it while you are still there.
I think it’s also important to study something you
are passionate about, because a lot of hours for
the next three or so years is dedicated to it. Take
the time to figure out what is really best for you.
Finally, my last piece of advice is to appreciate
your parents while they are right at your fingertips
because I can tell you they have your back like
nobody else ever will and the distance they go to
make you happy – well, words can’t describe that.
Overall the next step people make after high
school leads everyone down different paths and
none of them are wrong. Enjoy university if you
decide that’s what you want to do, work hard and
have fun. It’s only for a short period of time that
you’ll never get to relive. Maybe university isn’t for
you - for my best friend it wasn’t what was best
for her and that’s OK because I have never seen
her as happy as I do today in our rare but hours
long Facetime calls.
The point I’m trying to make is to trust what you
want to do and do it at 110% because when you
leave high school, nobody but you can dictate
your life.
“Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve
greatly.”- John F. Kennedy
JUNIOR
Council
The Junior Council is made up of four students from each year eight class, a head boy and head girl plus two deputies. The head boy
and head girl meet every Friday to discuss issues that come up in their class meetings. The main issues that we have discussed are
uniform, whanau, bell times, rubbish and cell phones. Part of our meeting is dedicated to Health & Safety and making Mount Aspiring
College a better place for all of the students. We also arrange challenges between classes for the Year 8 Shield, like the singing and
dancing competition held in term four. The council is holding a formal(ish) social evening to support fundraising for a trip to Nepal
next year. Mrs Watson-Taylor would like to thank the junior council for their consistent effort and contributions; they are an amazing
group of Year 8 students.
Council members are; 8WT - Matilda Metcalfe and Cade Cameron, 8LB - Eve Bretherton and Max Roughan, 8JN - India Yule and
CAMPS
The yellow clay mud cakes my boots and various leaves stick to the side of my blue trackies. As the lodge
comes into view the students let out a whoop of delight and the parents heave a sigh of relief. Soon the
thunder of footsteps on the wooden deck fills the air and the argument of who’s sleeping on the top bunk start.
Welcome to Camp Berwick ... it’s only Monday.
Year 10 Camp 2017 - The Stewart Island Traverse
On the 4 th of December 2017, 12 students (including me)
and two teachers set off on an epic adventure. After a
four hour drive to Invercargill, we caught a tiny plane to
Masons Bay, a beautiful beach in Stewart Island. My first
impression of Stewart Island was that it was one of the most
gorgeous places I had ever seen. An untouched paradise
where people are mere visitors. Over the next four days
we traversed the island, walking a total of 18 hours and
38km through sand dunes, swamps, and rainforests.
It was a fun and challenging experience that pushed our
physical strength to the limit and taught us valuable lessons
like teamwork, and how to be mindful of the abilities of others.
Some of the highlights for me where when the group come
together to help a student who was injured, and helped by
carrying their pack. Another was swimming in a cool river
after a tough first day of walking. Other highlights include
seeing wild kiwis, the breathtaking scenery and playing
cards in the evening, but the best part was seeing how
much more comfortable we all were with each other by
the end of the tramp. We all made new friends that we
probably wouldn’t have otherwise.
I feel so lucky to have had this experience and have made
memories that I will cherish forever.
Outdoor
Pursuits
38 MAC Mag 18 18
The highlight of Outdoor Pursuits for me
has definitely been tramping- it was really
good for our class to get together and become
friends close to the start of the year. I also loved the
winter sports, being able to build a snow cave with
your friends and go skiing on a Monday.
I've really enjoyed all of the different pursuits we
have done this year, but the one I really want to
continue to learn more about is rock climbing.
For me, it's also a good mental challenge as well
as physical, which is an aspect that I find more
interesting when you're in the outdoors.
Kayaking - super gnarly getting thrown about in
the fluids and chucked under the water for a solid
breath-holding extravaganza!
This was my first season snowboarding and I felt
like I learnt a lot from my instructor.
Just have a go at everything and keep an open
mind because even the activities/pursuits you think
you might not like still have super valuable lessons
and awesome learning opportunities.
It is the most amazing experience, and when else
in your life are you going to build a snow cave?
I have learnt about working with people at all
different levels as in each different activity that we
do there is different people that are strong or weak
at them. This meant that people that were stronger
could help the people that needed it.
OP has taught me to be more confident in my
ability and to trust my body more. I feel like now
I can plan my own outdoor trips and know what I
need to ensure it's a success.
MAC HOSTEL
This was a year to remember. Learning to put our differences aside,
we have come together. Frankie, with her randomly timed meme
references that no one truly understands. Nat, the triathlete, who
somehow managed to only cook twice during the year being either
away or asleep when it came to dinner time. Luci, the walking
juke box, spilling musical notes and distressed conversations. Izy
managed to ‘actually’ make the whole house her room, with her
stuff found in every corner. Tilly’s intentions to make you a feed
always came with her eating half straight from your fork without
you realising. And Liv, the house hippie. Namaste.
The Outdoor Pursuits on Sunday definitely tested us all, despite
this we still learnt lots and had an epic time. The highlights
definitely included freezing in Mt Cook and being rewarded
with the views by being able to see Wanaka from every angle.
Some may have found the mountain biking a challenge, while
others sped ahead and got sendy at every downhill opportunity,
all making the most of what we were learning and doing.
Through these summer months we were introduced to not
only new activities but a variety of life skills to get us through
the mountains. When it came to winter, we all found a love for
skiing (successfully turning Liv from snowboards to skis). We all
improved and made the most of each weekend, even though
Izy broke her collarbone and was out for the rest of the season.
Safe to assume this year has been a blast - each and every
member of our house has definitely come out of their shell and
begun to appreciate the newly formed friendships we have
made (along with the delicacy of home-cooked meals). We
wouldn’t change it for the world and are so happy to have come
down to spend Year 13 in Wanaka.
CASCADE
HOUSE
Us Avalanche girls, from the beginning, have been like a little family.
We have dinner together every night. We do a lot of sports together.
Bella is very organised and onto it all the time. She never forgets
anything and reminds us what we’re meant to be doing which is
why she is considered the mum of the house. Macy is relaxed all the
time doesn’t get stressed, not much fazes her and is always telling
dad jokes which is why she is considered the dad. Jess is more
worldly which is why she’s been dubbed the fun auntie. Florrie’s quite
energetic and random which is why she’s the fun cousin. Alice likes
everything a certain way and she’s sweet so she’s the grandma. And
Kine’s kind of all over the place and had to be shown how to do a lot
so she’s been dubbed the baby.
We have little traditions like Fun Day Thursday where we’ll do
something fun like watch a movie or have a picnic down by the
lake. Everyone has a skill that’s been really helpful to the house.
Jess is really good at comforting people, Florrie is really energetic
and good at getting people onboard with whatever she wants them
to do which is a talent in itself. Macy is good at putting anything
into perspective, showing us that whatever big issue we think is
happening isn’t really that big at all. Bella is good at making sure
we’re not forgetting anything and getting us to do stuff that may not
be fun but is necessary to our lives. Alice is good at keeping track of
everyone making sure that if we haven’t been around for a few hours
we’re not injured or lying in a ditch somewhere. And Kine’s good at
making everyone laugh.
AVALANCHE
HOUSE

LIVERPOOL
HOUSE
Liverpool house, to say the least, has been
awesome. Our house has been filled with the
laughter of Tom, he constantly laughs at his
own jokes, the rest of us just stand and try
to wonder how he managed to be accepted.
Jono brings manliness and testosterone to
Liverpool. Sean has been a quiet member of
the house yet plays his part well, chiming in
on the occasional banter. And let’s just say his
cooking has been interesting. Cole is the man
at the top, the alpha male, ensuring everyone
gets along and plays their part. Ashdon, who
is arguably 1.5 times smaller than Cole, has
still managed to boss the house and is best
friends with the vacuum cleaner.
The outdoor pursuits side of hostel has
also been wicked. The tramps have been
stunning along with the views and we have
all experienced NZ to a far greater extent and
have learnt lots from the outdoor experiences.
Only a handful of people had done mountain
biking regularly before they came to hostel,
so that has been one of the more challenging
activities. The snow sports have been what
it’s all about! Everyone has enjoyed this and
improved so much. We have been lucky
enough to have stuck a good season with a
few pow days in between and Liverpool have
been in amongst.
I guess we can collectively say that this has
been one of the most sensational years of
our lives. We miss Jakey, but we’ve stuck it
out without him and have definitely made
the most of the extra food at the dinner table.
If you try to compare the first day of the hostel to now, you
could say things have changed a little. Friendships have been
made, new places have been explored, and best of all we
have all made it without any “serious” injuries. We’ve had
some concussions, some torn ligaments and some illnesses
but being the boys from Arawhata, we are still climbing
mountains to this date. The mountains we have climbed,
rivers we’ve floated down, and lakes we’ve swum have
developed the characters we are today. The hostel has been
an unforgettable experience with not only new adventures
but meeting new people and creating new friends.
Moving to Mount Aspiring College was a big move for all us.
Living with six other lads and no parents was a major change
- to cook, wash and clean for ourselves! Everyone had to do
their part to keep the house fed and clean. But in the end this
has been the best decision for all of us and a thrilling year.
Some highlights of the year for us were skiing and bouldering.
Dangling off rocks four meters above the ground with no rope
was a breathtaking experience that we won't forget. Flipping
and spinning off jumps and rocks that were way out of limits
was also a thrilling way to test the strength in our knees and
hips. Skiing and boarding every weekend was tiring but
something we all will never get to do again.
ARAWHATA
HOUSE
ROB ROY
HOUSE
Us boys at Rob Roy - Michael,
Sam, Bowen, Ethan, Lucas and
Max - have all thoroughly enjoyed our time at Hostel and
the experience of getting to know new people and pushing ourselves
in the outdoors. The big ol’ highlight of the year was definitely the ski
season. We were all out there two or three times a week on the slopes.
It’s been amazing to see ourselves progress. Another favourite of ours
was the Catlins trip on the long Easter weekend. The weather was
great, and we all enjoyed getting some gnarly pits at Curio Bay.
It’s sad to see the year come to an end but we have all made the most
out of our year and are just thankful for the opportunity we’ve been
given to immerse ourselves into this environment down here.
A tip for future hostellers is to buy milkshake syrup. It tastes tu meke as
with the free milk you get given but you’ll only have one or two weeks to
exploit this as Cat and Duncan start to get a bit worried for your health
when you start chucking four bottles of it on the checkout counter.
We wish all the Year 13’s the best going into next year, y’all have been
an awesome bunch of people. And we’ll leave you all on a great
quote from a great ogre (Shrek): “After a while, you learn to ignore
the names people call you and just trust who you are.”
GATEWAY
This year Gateway was a great
course for me. It allowed me to go
out into a workshop and learn so
much about being a mechanic,
while getting automotive credits
in class.
Shea Williams
This year I found Gateway a great
experience. My industry was travel
and tourism. It's given me a better
idea of where I see myself in the
future. My placement was at World
Travellers Wanaka and I learned a
lot about working as a travel agent.
I also liked getting my First Aid
and Health and Safety Certificates
which will help me in the future.
Heidi Niederer
This year I found Gateway to be
a great way to get some aviation
industry work experience. I
worked at Performance Aviation
and enjoyed the experience. I
would recommend this to anyone
who wants to get out there and
get their hands dirty.
Ben Fussell
This year through Gateway I
took helicopter engineering at
Helisupport. I have learned lots
of key information about the
components and systems that
make a helicopter fly. I would
recommend the course to other
aspiring pilots like myself.
James Glynn
This year I found Gateway to be
a great learning experience. I
enjoyed being part of an aviation
engineering team. I learned how
planes are fixed and how they work.
Max Swift
Gateway has helped me make
decisions about my future career.
It has given me time to experience
real work. I enjoyed the
independent study and learning
new skills by being with the kids at
Montessori Children's House.
Ellise Price
This year on Gateway I spent one
day a week working with sparky
Pete Cartlidge from Elecnet. I
thoroughly enjoyed it. He showed
me the good parts and the rough
parts of the trade. I also improved
my teamwork skills and got better
at interacting with people. I also
learned about work ethic and
getting down and doing a task
until it was complete.
James Beere Flies Solo!
Congratulations to James Beere, pictured, who has just completed
his first solo flight. This is an important milestone in gaining a Private
Pilots Licence (PPL). In addition to soaring through the skies it is
necessary to pass six theory exams which are the equivalent of first
year university papers. The pass mark for these is seventy percent
and James has aced the first three:
Human Factors - 94%, Flight Radiotelephony - 84%, Aircraft
Technical Knowledge - 93%
So what made James decide to sit his PPL? While still in Year 6 his
school organised a fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter
Service. The four students who raised the most money were
rewarded with a flight across Auckland in the Westpac chopper.
“I managed to raise the most money” he says, which meant that
“I ended up in the front seat of the chopper. Ever since then I've
wanted to fly.” When he saw that aviation was an option at MAC
he seized the opportunity and is really grateful to his parents for
supporting this decision. To date he has clocked up thirteen hours
of flying time, two of these flying solo. He needs a minimum of 50
hours flying before he can gain his licence and is looking forward
to the end of the inversion to start clocking these up.
Here is what flight instructor Reuben Swafford had to say:
“It often appears effortless from the outside. To the onlooker it looks
to be a bit of fun in a plane doing some turns and other manoeuvres
amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in our country. True
enough, it is a fun, exhilarating, picturesque wind-borne playground.
Likewise, it is a fast-paced, high-pressure, high workload learning
environment not fit for the faint of heart.
A keen interest in aviation accompanied by an insatiable tenacity
is pivotal in becoming a capable pilot. James is a good student and
has already passed half of the six theory exams which accompany
the in-flight training he has received. James takes the airborne
environment well in his stride with a comprehensive grasp of flight
manoeuvres and in-flight checks.”
Next year James plans to attend aviation college in either Nelson
or at Ardmore to study a Diploma in Aviation which can lead into
a career in general aviation, flight instruction, or as an airline pilot.
Well done James!
wish the students of
Mount Aspiring College
every success.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
The Academic Committee have enjoyed another incredibly successful year.
From hosting the Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern and a variety of other
incredible speakers for MACTalks to continuing the MACademics initiative
every Wednesday, 2018 has been overflowing with great opportunities for MAC
students. Inter-house debating had an awesome level of participation and
effort from all year groups and displayed the real talent MAC has in debating.
All of the Academic Committee members have loved not only continuing the
previous initiatives but creating new ones this year too and we look forward
to maintaining this level of participation and excellence next year!
MACADEMICS
MACademics is an after-school study group which is held once a week at school
for an hour. Each week there is a different subject focus and a teacher there to
help with any questions students may have. It is open to all age groups and anyone
can come even if they aren’t coming for the specific subject that week. We have
older students involved in MACademics to help out the younger years in their
work towards NCEA. We have received a large amount of positive feedback from
students and parents. We as a committee feel very grateful for the chance to be
able to help out the younger students of our school.
This year we have had the opportunity to host a number of brilliant speakers as
part of our MACtalks initiative: Grahame Sydney (a Central Otago painter), Dougal
Allan (a triathlete with a BPhed with honours), Calum MacLeod, (Deputy Mayor
for the QLDC), Sue Telford (local pilot, and flight instructor), Tom Brownlee (North
American/Asia Pacific Sales Manager for Mons Royale and the Director of a small
content creation company, All Us In Winterland) and Dr Lisa Argilla (one of New
Zealand’s best-known wildlife veterinarians who had appeared in the TV series
“Wildvets”) as well as our Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern.
MACtalks
These MACtalks were started by the Academic Committee three years ago, and we
have strived to continue their hard work to provide the students with opportunities
to meet with and talk to these professionals about their personal journeys and what
they did to get to their current careers. We are working on bringing in more speakers
from a variety of different professions, from in and around the community, in order
to diversify the people that the students have access to.
Debating
The 2018 Inter-House Debating competition
was held in the final week of Term 2 by the
Academic Committee. Over 35 students
debated in a total of nine debates over
the course of the week. The competition
was split up with Junior, Intermediate
and Senior categories, each of which had
two heat debates and one final debate
to decide the winner. Each debate was
judged by two members of staff who all
did an excellent job adjudicating and
deciding the winners.
An awesome effort was put in by all debaters
and some well-written persuasive debates
resulted in the final results being very close,
with Iron swooping in to take first place!
The Academic Committee look forward to
running the competition again next year
and want to give a huge thanks to all of the
staff and students that were involved. In
term three of 2018, six MAC students were
involved in the Central Otago Debating
Tournament, held at Cromwell College and
run by New Zealand ex-politician Michael
Laws. Senior and junior teams from Mount
Aspiring College, Wakatipu College,
Cromwell College and Dunstan High School
battled it out over the course of two days.
Each team debated in two prepared debates
and one impromptu debate on the Sunday,
with the finalists debating on the following
Monday night at the Cromwell Town &
Country Club in front of a large audience.
Both MAC teams won all three debates on the
Sunday and made it into the finals. The MAC
Junior team, consisting of Emma Davies,
Nicole Meyer and Lucy Fenton, gained 2 nd
place overall after a very close final debate.
The MAC Senior team, consisting of Jake
Nicholson, Joe Strawson and Isobel Smith,
came out victorious and gained 1 st place at
the tournament after winning every one of
their debates. A huge effort was made by
the MAC debaters, who all demonstrated
tremendous skill in preparing and delivering
each debate.
Thank you to MAC teachers Kris Logan and
Joanne Waide who organised and supported
the debaters. We are looking forward to
another outstanding tournament next year!
-Soviet SUSHI-
Place an iron curtain length wise on an Eastern European rolling
mat, shiny-side down. Position the sheet about one inch from
the edge of Germany closest to you and leave some of the West
Europe mat exposed on the other side of the Germany sheet. Wet
your hands in cool communist propaganda and take a handful
of red army rice. Place the rice in the center of the country and
use your fingers to spread the rice evenly over the country. Be
sure to leave a 3/4 inch strip of Germany uncovered on the far
side. Place communist ideals strips and some under-your-control
politician, cucumber or avocado along the center of the rice. Be
careful not to overfill the country (The communists will rebel).
Place your fingertips over the fillings to hold them in place and
stop the rebellions. Then, use your thumbs to lift up the edge
of the country rolling mat closest to you. Begin rolling the mat
away from you, while applying pressure to the fillings to keep the
countries firm. Roll the mat over slowly until it covers the rice and
the near and far sides of rice join, still leaving the 3/4 inch strip
of Germany, rice-free, exposed. While holding the bamboo mat
in position, apply military oppression to the countries with your
fingers to make the countries firm. Slice the countries in half, then
cut both country rolls to make 7 equal sized pieces. Now enjoy
your Soviet sushi!
-Red ARMY RICE-
Rinse the workers in cold leninist ideals while stirring briskly
to remove any oligarchs. Drain the rice completely of food.
Place the rice and the six cups of famine in a medium sized
Russia and cover it with a pig-headed tzar. Bring the anger
to a boil over medium heat. Allow the water to boil for three
minutes and then reduce the heat to low and continue
cooking 15 minutes without removing the tzar. Remove
the workers from the streets and remove the tzar (the old
monarchy should no longer be visible). Turn the people out
evenly on a well-greased communist scheme sheet using
a spatula or Vladimir Lenin. Sprinkle the workers with the
propaganda, anti-capitalist ideals, and salt while mixing
with a spatula or rice paddle until the workers reach an
ineffective communist state. Keep the rice covered with
new oligarchs or napkin until the workers are ready to form
an army and take on the capitalists.
Tom Millis
Stop, listen. Hear that? That is the sound of isolation. The gentlest of breezes drift past your
ears, as you take in the soft surrounding sounds. A finch elusive against the blue sky, a
bellbird yodeling his daily track and the creek’s pitter-patter as it meanders down the lazy
valley. Stop, breath in. Smell that? That is the smell of wildlife. The sensation of smell fills
your mind as the next wave of scents gush into your nose. Redolence of the tundra flowers,
parched and sour from the insensate meadow grasses and the musty from the decayed
bush. Stop, now take one step. Feel that? The crisp dry grass gnaws at your boots with
every step, lukewarm air flows through and desiccates your mouth.
Jack Wilson
Saying Hello
Sometimes the complexity of saying the word goodbye can
make us miss the simplicity of when we first say hello. Those
little words that we were taught to say to the eyes in front
of us at an early age, can sometimes make us forget what
they actually mean. As time drags itself out day by day,
month by month, year by year, and lifetime by lifetime, we
forget the person who we first spoke to and got to know.
We forget the first time we laid eyes upon them, the first
sentence we put together, and the first time a smile was
created by a joke or an event in front of us.
We miss the now cherished memories and what that
brought to our lives, how it changed us, and how that
person and their memory is etched in us for years to come.
We may not realise at the time how much it will hurt us when
they leave, and how much we focus on the end that we forget
to live in the present and what is happening in these passing
fragments of time. Remember, that this person you now
choose to share a portion of your life with, whether it be big
or small, will be crucial to how your perspective is impacted.
All of us need to remember that the person who we first see
walk through those doors won’t be how we see them as they
leave. These people are the ones who show us our paths and
make us happy and smile and laugh until their lives call and
they need to depart from us. We need to understand that the
simplicity of a hello is more special than we think. Remember
to not take for granted the small time, and remember to say
hello when you first see your new best friend.
The Desert
Cracked fragile lips desired moisture. Every sharp swallow stung
as the remaining drops of fluid I had left, trickled down my throat.
Eyes hardly opened, dried and worn out. How could I sleep with
this deathening sun glaring down at me? I had been going crazy
in this desert, which made it even harder to try and keep track of
the days. Every day grew worse and the silence become louder.
Hearing my own heartbeat, day after day, minute after minute.
Until the day everyone dreaded, that one unpredictable day, that
heartbeat, would stop. With no warning at all, just like that. Imagine
your life coming to a sudden halt. The things I wanted to achieve,
say, do, before I died. I was tired. Tired of finding things to keep me
distracted. Tired of waiting for help. Tired of anticipating whether I
would make it through the day or not. But worst of all, I was tired of
searching for hope. All my hope I started with, soon drained out of
me. No more positivity, no more faith, no more excuse to live.
I knew my actions led me to this day, but I couldn't help think
that this wasn't my fault. I was vulnerable. I had no other choice,
the secrets grew inside me until they ate me alive. I should have
gone to someone, told them the truth from the start, they would
understand, wouldn't they? It was self defense, but of course, no
one would forgive. My only choice was to run, abandon my life I
created and let it all crumble. Lose everything I loved and watch
my future fade. I could not live normally, pretending and faking my
actions. The only thing left, was to keep on going. I walked for weeks
upon weeks. Stopping on the odd occasion, whenever I felt the
rubber on my shoes start to burn through. The oasis was bone-dry,
hard blazing terrain, it was a waste of space and played the main
role in my nightmares. Each day, I found it harder to breathe, the
thick opaque air strangling me with every step I took. My smell was
immune and could only smell one thing. Rain. I have never longed
for anything this badly up to now. The smell of rain dragged me
through the pain. The sharp prickly cacti stood upright, as if they
were laughing at me shamefully. A slight swift breeze ran through
my dry roots as I came to the horrifying conclusion, I licked my
brittle feeble lips and sighed, I was stuck.
The Cultural Committee at Mount Aspiring College is the committee responsible for organising
and being involved in cultural events at MAC and upholding/representing the culture of the
school. We are responsible for organising events such as house singing, MAC’s Got Talent,
musical, mufti days and more. As well as organising events such as these, we are also expected
to be involved in and promote various other cultural events within and outside of MAC such as
Rockquest, MACstock, art exhibitions and drama performances. This representation of culture
at MAC is crucial as we believe that the arts are essential to humanity and its existence. Our
objective for this year was to continue to promote and support the growth and recognition of
cultural activities.
Cultural Committee Co-Chairpeople 2018 - Riley Christie and Leo Munro-Heward
2018 has seen the Cultural Committee’s strong relationship with the International Language
Centre (ILC) continue, and has included international student representation at committee
meetings, and shared lunches to encourage student integration. The Cultural Committee and the
ILC this year both enjoyed the campus tour organised by the Cultural Committee to introduce
new students in Term 3 to MAC. This was an important step in bringing them together with the
local students, to show the cultural aspects of the school and all of the great things that MAC
has to offer. We as a Committee are looking forward to maintaining and strengthening this
relationship with the ILC in the years to come.
Year 13 Drama - Antigone
This year Year 13 Drama performed “Antigone” written by Sophocles, translated by Don Taylor. The class had the challenge
of interpreting a noble text and taking a symbolic, modern approach to this historical two-thousand-year-old play. There
are lots of important political messages that show woman standing up against men, gods, and the law that still rings true in
a current audience because these messages are still very important and relevant in society today. The text challenged our
interpretation and performance skills. I had the privilege of being one of the people playing the character Antigone. It was
a very challenging character that I was able to learn from, allowing me to grow in my personal integrity and skill sets as an
actor. This play allowed all of the drama students to become a lot closer by working together with such a mature piece of
text, that allowed us to be able to explore the world and its meaning. This was a very valuable performance for all of us, that
we will never forget; all the friends and the memories that we have made over the years. We of course couldn't have done it
without our amazing drama teacher/ director Emily McRae. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our class we
couldn’t have done it without you. - Casey Scurr
Year 12 Drama
Year 12 Drama Performances: This year in drama the year 12’s performed two separate plays from the Play Lunch book, Tiggy
Tiggy Touchwood and the Rosenberg sisters. Tiggy Tiggy Touchwood has a very deep story, revealing how the relationship
between Melissa Denham, partner to Jess Mackie was treated within a small community in rural NZ during the 1980s. Set
during this time, same sex relationships were extremely taboo. As a result, Melissa Denham (Jasmine Murray) struggles
beneath the community’s pressure of rehoming Tig (Stellar Nepia) into an institution, who has a deteriorating mental state
(similar to a child) as a result of serious abuse. We spent many lessons experimenting and playing in the space to find our
characters’ unique voice and body characteristics, and worked through unit by unit, often dropping the script and improvising
based off our intent. To perform these plays, while communicating the underlying layers of meaning, we were challenged to
act as characters very polar to ourselves, meaning we had to be very committed and dedicated. Emily McRae’s insight and
commitment (from analysing the scripts, shaping our characters and providing feedback and direction) was of invaluable
help. This experience has challenged us and made us closer as peers, we thoroughly enjoyed presenting and preparing for
these performances. - Stellar Nepia & Jasmine Murray
Year 11 Drama
This year the Year 11 Drama class were honoured to perform “FIND ME” by Olwyn Wymark.
This thought provoking and vulnerable text follows the true story of a young girl, Verity Taylor,
and her struggle with mental health. This play, set in the 60’s and 70’s, explores Verity’s
struggle as she seeks to be ‘found’ for who she really is. It also follows her family’s struggle
to nurture and seek help for Verity when she displays abnormal and erratic behaviour.
As a class we felt very privileged to communicate such a serious and real message to the
Wanaka community: That everyone, no matter their physical or mental ability, race, gender,
sexuality, background or beliefs should be seen for who they REALLY are, and should be
supported and encouraged to be their unique and individual selves. This piece challenged all
students involved, as the mature themes and characters broadened our acting capabilities.
We grew closer as a class through the rehearsal process and collectively felt that although
our present struggle as a society with mental health has improved since the 60’s and 70’s
there is still more acceptance to be had. As a group of individuals we gained a lot from
working on ‘FIND ME’. We were able to explore in more depth the reality and isolation people
like Verity and her family feel everyday. We also experimented with multi role playing which
helped us to think more consciously about establishing voice, body, space, and movement to
each character. We thoroughly enjoyed the learning and challenges ‘FIND ME’ had in store for
us. Definitely a highlight of my year. -Thea Erichsen
Backstage is where the real stars of the show are! It was such
an amazing opportunity to work alongside so many different
people and from all different fields from the actors and directors
to the tech and costume team and all ranging in ages. We spent
many long hours gathering, making and painting props but it
was all worth it when we got to put them out on the stage and
it looked great. Organising backstage in the dark in the silence
was a mission at first but we soon got the hang of it and always
made sure the right props were ready to go. It was always a
laugh backstage (a quiet one of course) especially looking
across the stage to the other side and dancing together during
every song. All the hours we put in were well worth it for the fun
we had and great show that was produced.
Madi Mulqueen - PROPS & DESIGN
Being a part of the musical and having the opportunity to learn how to
stage manage was such an amazing opportunity for me. I've never done
anything like this before, so watching the show come together right from
the very start I was learning new things about the production process
every day. Emily was an awesome person to learn from and the respect
that everyone gave her was pretty inspiring. Watching the final show
made all the hard work for everyone who was part of it worth it!
Jess Brennan - STAGE MANAGER
My experience doing sound tech was great. Even though it was a lot of
volunteering time and effort, I got to see everyone in the cast, band and
tech team develop over the rehearsals and stage shows and that was really
amazing. I also got to work with an amazing team of people who helped
the show work as a whole like Grenville, Mitchell and Stellar who worked on
sound and mics with me. The whole thing was a great experience and I also
learned a lot about the inner workings of the backstage of what goes into a
production, hint hint: it's a lot of work. My favourite thing though was getting
to see all of my friends do so well every night and watching them perform :)
Riley Christie - SOUND TECH
The musical production was quite the journey, something I will always
remember. At times it was exhausting and stressful but in the end it was the
most amazing and unforgettable experience ever. I am sad that it is over and I
can’t wait to do more productions like this in the future. I will look back on this
moment in the future and remember the incredible experience I had being the
lead of an awesome musical alongside an amazing cast.
Max Lusty - LEAD
Being in the band has been an epic experience. At first I was hesitant to start when I heard about how many rehearsals there would
be, but once I committed myself and got to know the songs it became the highlight of my week. Playing in a group with other people
is super fun and entertaining. At some points in the term we weren't sure if we would pull it off, but after lots of practice, we nailed
it! Throughout our practices, there were lots of fun and laughs! It was an awesome time and I'm sad it has ended.
Matai Wells - BAND MEMBER
The musical was one of the best experiences I had since a long
time. It was so much fun and we've all grown so much in those
couple of months and became good friends. Everybody worked so
hard for this project and I am so grateful for all the support from
the music team. It makes me sad knowing that it is over but we are
going to take all those amazing memories with us.
Lena Peter - BAND MEMBER
The role that I took charge of in the musical
was very demanding, however, it was
worth it to see the whole musical come
together. My favourite scene to light would
have been Don't Break the Rules, as the
result was stunning.
In the beginning there was ‘Te põ’ only
darkness.
Out of the darkness came Ranginui and
Papatuanuku who were in an eternal
embrace. They had many sons whom
lived between them, however over time
their sons grew restless of their contained
life. It was decided that they would
separate their parents and after many
attempts, Tãnemahuta their eldest son,
thrust them apart by growing into a tall
Kauri tree. In this early time, although
the brothers had created more space
living upon their mother, they still lived
in darkness. Tãnemahuta was given safe
passage through the heavens to seek the
three kete of knowledge to return back to
their new found world. In these baskets
were: ngã whetu (the stars), te marama
(the moon) and te rã (the sun), with these
gifts Tãnemahuta created day and night.
This story is important to the design of our
kakahu as we have included a unique line
running through the middle creating a
mirror image. The pattern represents the
separation of Ranginui and Papatuanuku
by Tãnemahuta and is significant to us as
it marks the beginning of our world. The
poutama (staircase) pattern represents
Tane’s journey that he took in reaching the
three kete of knowledge but is also a symbol
to show achievement and attainment. We
wanted to show the journey that all students
at Mount Aspiring College take throughout
their education and the success they
may achieve. You can see that where the
staircase goes up, there is also the mirror
image of the staircase going down and this
is to represent our obstacles or failures. It is
important for us all in life to achieve success
but also to acknowledge that success does
not come without failure.
The central aspect of the design has a black
diamond, the top half represents ‘te maunga
o Tititea’ (Mt Aspiring) and it’s reflection in
‘te roto o Oanaka’ Lake Wanaka.
The hour-glass shape in the middle of
the design represents each person being
at the centre of their own universe. In
teaching Te Reo Mãori we learn this
concept through mihimihi and for us as a
school we aim to put each student at the
center of their own learning.
This shape can also represent the Clutha
River (MataAu) as it leaves Lake Wanaka
and carves through the landscape of
Central Otago (Ururuwhenua).
The colours reflect our region:
Gold for the dry Central Otago summers
White for the snow in winter
Black for the many rivers and lakes that
we live among.
Kia ora e te whanau,
The end of 2018 has come around so
quickly and it's time to review our goals in
Kapa haka. A major goal for the year was
Kakahu (uniform) and we are so proud to
have a full Kapa haka uniform designed
by students and whanau to represent our
school. This has really helped lift the mana
of our performances and hope that this will
encourage others to come along and be
involved in our group.
Another goal was to perform at Polyfest
and this was the first year that the Murihiku
Maori & Pasifika Cultural Trust held its very
own Central Lakes Polyfest in Queenstown.
This was bought about by the number of
schools from our region travelling to both
Invercargill and Dunedin to participate in
this event and it was fantastic to see the
culture thriving in our community. This was
the first year that MAC has participated in
such an event and although we were a little
nervous, the students performed their own
bracket which was led and accompanied
by seniors in the group. We are excited
to learn from this experience and hope to
include more diverse items involving poi or
mau rakau next year.
A huge thank you to Jeromy Van Riel for
his support during term 3 in helping the
students to prepare. Without his knowledge
and expertise, the students would almost
be entirely self driven. We would love to
know if there are any whanau members
out there keen to support us in 2019 if you
have any experience with Kapa haka or
Maori arts, please feel free to come along
and meet our group.
Te Kareti O Maunga Tititea should be extremely proud of their brilliant performance at the inaugural Central Lakes Polyfest on
24 th October 2018. It was the first time performing in a public arena and their efforts were acknowledged by a haka performed
by the audience. Organised by the Murihiku Maori & Pasifika Cultural Trust it was held in Queenstown to enable more Central
Be yourself and make your own noise.
Rockquest
Well just a little about Rockquest is that we all knew what we had
to do and why we were doing this. It was all just a job of getting it
done on time, and all we wanted to do was have fun and play as a
band and after our two years together we ended up doing it well,
The regional final this year was held at the
Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday 16th
June, MAC had a total of 11 bands entered
in the competition. MAC band ‘Better than
Nothing’: Henry McConnell, Clarke West,
Harry Anderson and Archie Orbell took out the
People’s Choice Award. As a Year 8 student
Clarke West also took out the musicianship
award - we’re excited to see where his
music takes him next. Jessie McKenzie from
‘Iridescence’ received the APRA Lyric Award
for the songs she wrote for her band, ‘O 2
(Oxygen)’ and ‘Lighthouse.’ Finally, Year
11 band ‘Not Yet Rated’: Owen Lea, Quinn
because of teamwork and determination from our parents, friends
and ourselves.
Harry the Bass Player Anderson
Curtis, Ethan Carleton, Tom Heather and Gary
acts, a huge number from the
Year 11 classes. As well as a wide
genre of covers, we heard some
great originals including ‘Better
Dylan Rimmer. It was great to
see a large amount of younger
House Singing
This year the annual house singing event took
place in Term 2 and involved both dancing
and singing for all four houses. Iron came out
triumphant getting first place in this event with
their performance of ‘Dynamite’ by Taio Cruz.
Pisa came second with ‘Don't stop believin’ by
Journey followed by Roy with ‘Why does love do
this to me?’ by the Exponents. Barker came fourth
with their performance of ‘Slice of Heaven’ by Dave
Dobbyn. It was a great morning and everyone was
very enthusiastic and gave it their best go.
MAC Choir
This year has been a whirlwind of incredible opportunities for the MAC Choir. Starting
in Term 2, we began working on what would be our Stars in Your Eyes song, ‘This is Me’
from ‘The Greatest Showman.’ Many weeks of rehearsals later, we performed at the
Rippon Concert in late September alongside the Treble Tones and the MAC Chamber
Group. It was great for all of us to perform in a space with such good acoustics! Only
days later we were in the Lake Wanaka Centre completing the dress rehearsal for Stars
in Your Eyes, working with musical professionals from across the Upper Clutha area; it
was yet another awesome experience! The show itself was a real hit, and despite being
very tired by the end, we were all super proud of the things we’d achieved.
We were very fortunate to be joined by so many Year 7 and 8 students this year as
without them we would not have accomplished the sound that we did. It will be exciting
to welcome more next year! And as we welcome even more members, we also say
farewell to Luci McDougall and Max Lusty, two very valued hostellers who will be
missed as we continue singing in 2019. It was also nice this year to have a great group of
confident tenors and basses. Next year we plan to build on this, possibly even starting
our own barbershop group!
In the New Year, we will be representing MAC in the Big Sing, a nationwide school choir
competition, which we have already started to prepare for. It’s been so incredible
working as a part of this big family, I can’t wait for what’s to come!
Stars In Your Eyes
Stars In Your Eyes 2018 was a last minute
decision for me and I am so glad that I put
myself out there and did it. Over show week
my confidence on stage as a soloist grew
hugely, I sung Kelly Clarkson’s idol version
of ‘Piece by Piece’ and learnt through Stars
how to express emotion while I was singing
and direct it towards the audience. The
backstage experience is something I really
miss. I was given an opportunity to perform
with others who share the same passion and
interests as I do; the Stars team was very
supportive.
Stars In Your Eyes is an amazing production
and I would highly recommend younger
students to give it a go, especially with all the
support they give to our school.
The Last Minute Charlies
The Doodlebops, or as our teacher says ‘The Last Minute
Charlies” is a jazz combo comprised of five talented
musicians from Mt Aspiring College. We have Maxwell
Lusty as Vocals, Rory Johns on Keyboard, Flynn Rosie
on Drums, Daniel Hadida on Bass and Devlin Lynden on
Saxophone. On Friday 19th October we attended The
Secondary Schools Jazz Fest in Invercargill. After weeks of
rehearsals with our jazz band teacher, Alistair Monteith,
and a productive morning of warm ups we left Mount
Aspiring College at lunch to start our journey down to
Invercargill, We arrived at 5pm and had a sound check at
6pm then we waited for our time to get up there and jam.
We all had loads of fun up there, playing together in front
of an audience, knowing that our hard work had come to
fruition. We achieved second over all and Rory won best
keyboard for the third time in a row. I think that as a band
we would all like to congratulate and thank one another
for our efforts and for being such an awesome crew to
play with. We would like to thank Alistair Monteith for all
the hours that he put up with our antics and guiding us
through to the place that we needed to be. He is a legend
and we couldn’t thank him enough. We would also like to thank
Mr Doyle for organising our trip, Driving us there and making it
all happen, We couldn’t have done it with out his efforts and are
truly grateful for all the work that he puts in behind the scenes.
Definitely Jazzy
Jazz band (we call ourselves the ‘8th Dimension’) has, this
year, been full of opportunity and fun! We started with
the school musical ‘Catch Me if You Can’ which was one
amazing feat! Soon after that we were back in the LWC
performing in MACStock with new and old members. The
rest of 2018 we have been rehearsing very busily with lots
of funky new songs up our sleeves! Here’s what the band
has to say: “It is a great place to play together with other
instruments and people,” “A great way to ‘blow off’ steam
during lunchtime. All puns intended!” “It’s pretty cool!” “It’s
a great place to work with such dedicated and enthusiastic
students,” “Definitely jazzy!”
Service is the act of giving back to our school and community, and at MAC we strongly believe in this ethos. This year
the Service Committee has had a great time organising events and activities to encourage the celebration of personal
success and to promote bonding and friendships between students. To begin the year we held an “Amazing Race” which
aimed to incorporate new students, hostellers and existing students into the Year 13 cohort. This enjoyable afternoon has
been a tradition at MAC for many years now and is looked forward to by many of the students.
Some of the smaller events throughout the year, fun and exciting nonetheless, include Valentines Day where students
and staff can purchase chocolates for each other and then we deliver them. The Polar Plunge is an activity that Year 13
students can sometimes feel a little apprehensive towards, and understandably because who would want to jump in the
freezing cold water of Lake Wanaka on the shortest day of the year?! Towards the end of the year, the Year 11 Dinner
and the Leaver's Dinner become our priority. These evenings are an enjoyable experience for the students, often creating
memories that will last a lifetime.
I feel very privileged to have had this opportunity to work alongside some amazing and hard working people this year and
on behalf of the Committee I'd like to thank Karyn Munro for supporting us to be able to achieve all of our endeavours.
TEAM GREEN
Team Green is a group of students making Mount Aspiring College more
eco-friendly. This year Team Green is a group of Year 7 students, two Year
8 students and Luci, a very busy and efficient Year 13 student - all are to be
thanked for giving away their time and energy for a greater good.
The year started with the best ever fair trade bake sale, generating $190
towards funding the purchase of more solar panels. Students made muffins,
slices and sherbert with at least one fair trade ingredient (chocolate or cocoa,
banana or sugar). We had three more fair trade bake sales, one each term,
raising more than $500 in total - that is half a solar panel!
Students have ensured that every classroom has the recycling boxes they
need, and upgraded the broken ones. This involves checking all the classrooms,
asking all the teachers, compiling the data, ordering the corresponding amount
of crates, creating and pasting signs and delivering them.
In early April, we had the honour of spending a day with former Green Party
leader Jeanette Fitzsimons and Ralph Adler and Zella Dowling from the
Climate Coalition. We discussed and brainstormed what MAC is already
doing and what we can do better in energy, transport, food and waste. We
analysed how important each issue is, which has the biggest impact, and
what costs and feasibility addressing it entails. We decided that the biggest
difference we can achieve for our school is by implementing a food waste
collection system and making compost.
This led us to audit how much food waste is generated and to evaluate
different food waste management systems and to establish four worm farms
and educate students and staff how to use them.
In Term 3, we also organised a fun scavenger hunt which was won by Barker House.
Finally, thanks to our recycling effort from 2017, we have earned 50 trees! So Team
Green students organised a tree planting event, during a long whanau in Term 4,
so that all junior students get a chance to plant a tree on the college grounds.
Team Green students meet once a week at lunchtime and practice how to
be sustainability leaders. Our thriving group welcomes YOU next year, if you
are motivated and committed to make a positive difference for our school
environment and beyond.
This partnership is student led and we are committed to creating space for every person to be accepted and respected for who they are.
We believe in a bullying-free Aotearoa and that young people are an important step in making this possible.
Our approach is effective because young people are very used to tuning out fear based, safety messages from adults as background noise,
but messages and information from our peers that engage us and empower us as leaders are more relevant, relatable and real. Sticks ’n'
Stones asks young people to put themselves forward, make an ongoing commitment, and stand up within their schools, ensuring a diverse
range of young people rather than only typical leaders maintaining ongoing activities, learning and impact.
Students have an enormous amount of experience with life online and can support younger students, their parents, families and communities
to better understand the benefits and pitfalls. Authentic leadership opportunities, decision making and spokespeople roles are at the heart of
our project to show that teenagers have the passion, commitment and knowledge to change attitudes and behaviour.
Sticks ‘n' Stones advocates are role models for all young people. The Mount Aspiring College advocates meet weekly to discuss our up and
coming projects. We work by allowing young people to be the ones to communicate with their peers to enforce the messages and morals
behind our work. The research that we have looked into has shown that we need to highlight every single person’s role in creating an accepting
and respectful environment and culture. Every step of the way we are involved in the decision making process and see it through to the end.
This August two Sticks ‘n' Stones advocates from Mount Aspiring College, Red Simpson and Meg Thomas along with Karla Sanders, CEO of
SnS, Vanessa Breen and Abby another advocate all from Alexandra, travelled up to Wellington for Involve the Youth Conference. The three
advocates presented to a group of 100 people for 15 minutes about how they tackle bullying at Sticks ‘n' Stones, and then they attended other
workshops and talks to extend their knowledge and come back into MAC and put this into practice to tackle bullying. Meg and Red gained a
lot from this experience such as leadership skills and valuable knowledge to help make bullying a thing of the past.
Three Year 13 students, Sonya Palmer, Jessica Curtis and Stirling Deaton have been working towards developing a programme called Project
Connect. Project Connect (PC) comes from the understanding that it can be scary asking for help (or even understanding what help is
available) and that it can often be easier to reach out to another young person. This is about connecting not counselling. Connectors are
trained and supported with strategies to reflect back the situation to the other person for them to consider their options and also to have the
information about where to go next. Connectors can also provide social and emotional support to younger students who are new or struggling
to feel connected at school. Combined, these contribute to a more positive school culture and environment.
PC helps senior students develop leadership skills, empathy, emotional skills, feel a responsibility for community connectedness and
caring for others more vulnerable. PC also benefits the younger or newer members of the school community by providing them support
and a chance to develop confidence and relationships in what can be a challenging, overwhelming time. It also develops, values and
encourages strong links between senior and junior students and encourages senior students to remain connected to younger students and
to maintaining a school culture that is positive and caring.
On behalf of the MAC Sticks ‘n' Stones team, thank you.
Meg Thomas and Sonya Palmer
POLAR PLUNGE 2018
The shortest day of winter 2018 saw many brave Year 13's jump into Lake Wanaka at 8am. Dressed in 80's themed attire, fluoroescent
colours and tights didn't provide much protection from the cold, but that wouldn't stop anyone from making the plunge. Luckily, there
were hot chocolates on standby to help warm up with afterwards. Thank you to the Year 12 members of the Service Committee who
organised this event and to St John's for being there - just in case.
The Sports Committee focuses on
making the most of sport at Mount
Aspiring College. Our goal is to
involve students in a wide range of
activities and acknowledge sporting
achievements. We are lucky as a
school to have an amazing culture
and great opportunities handed to us
involving sport. As a committee we
organise events such as athletics day
and the Kavanagh sporting exchange,
we ensure that every event is well
organised and fun for anyone who is
involved. We have had a great year
fulfilled with achieving our goal of
encouraging Mount Aspiring students
to get involved and enjoy sport.
We helped organise many different
events, working with a range of age
groups. One of the main activities
we were most involved with was
Quad and we were positioned to
be the hosts this year for such a
great sporting event. We had the
opportunity to help select an A and B
team for each year level to compete in
the fun, competitive sport based days
as well as getting to choose which
sports would be played. We made a
great effort to welcome and support
the different schools and compete
against them. Everyone was very
enthusiastic, encouraging and overall
had great sportsmanship, making it a
really enjoyable tournament.
Our two main whole school events are
swim sports and athletics. The Sports
Committee help coordinate these
events every year as both days are
really good opportunities to go out and
have fun with your friends, while trying
to improve your skills. Luckily, here at
MAC we have students who always
embrace days like these, which is
always pleasing to see. We have also
started running lunchtime activities,
social volleyball for Years 9-13 on
Wednesdays and sports games for
Years 7 and 8 on Fridays. By having
these lunchtime activities, we are
hoping to entertain and encourage
people to experience new sports and
work with different people in a team
environment.
The committee also went out in the
community at the Upper Clutha
Festival of Sport and Recreation - we
love seeing all students participating
in the activities and always love
getting fully involved ourselves. We, as
a committee, are lucky enough to be
mentored by Mr Crosbie who allows
us to have these opportunities to take
on such great activities throughout
the year, not only for entertainment
and enjoyment for the students but
creating a unique culture around
sport at this school. We also give
Jacky Toepfer and Chrissi Pettit great
thanks for all their support towards
our committee and all they do for us
and the sport in this school to allow it
to be as great as it is.
Snow Champs
Upper Clutha Ski and Snowboard Champs
On Tuesday 18 September 2018 we went up to Cardrona for the Upper Clutha Primary
Schools Ski and Snowboard champs. It was a really nice, sunny day with 50+ cm’s of
fresh powder! The race was held on a dual slalom course. It was loads of fun but also
icy and bumpy from everyone skiing\snowboarding on it. We slipped down the course
to inspect it before our race. We raced in teams and then the three fastest times
got added up. We played in the snow and did a bit of waiting around. After we had
raced we free skied for the rest of the day. The powder was very smooth and we sunk
whenever we took a turn. It was a very exciting and fun day as we got
to spend time with our friends and work in teams.
I don't, I’m yet to figure
The Youth Olympic Games, as clichéd as it sounds, were an experience of a lifetime. The ‘Olympics’
is a name known to everyone. Except, for me, it was more than that. It was a passion, a dream and
a goal that I used to define my life and who I was.
It’s reality didn’t disappoint. However, I quickly realised that it wasn’t just about competing against
the world’s best. It encompasses more than the area between the start and finish line. Despite
the five days of racing being a highlight due to the constant adrenaline rush, the people and the
village were also high points. From the slightly disappointing to incredible race results, it made a
dramatic effect on who I am. It gave me a spark of confidence that, ‘I am good enough’ and that I
belong there. It is a very rewarding feeling, especially with the challenge of racing five days in a row.
When recovery is a primary focus, to ensure you are ready to go fast the next day, you would
have to fight the urge to join in in the activities occurring at the village where we stayed. Activities
consisted of a circus corner, yoga, karaoke, speeches, pool-table soccer, spray painting and more.
This combined with the atmosphere stained with everyone’s happiness made me feel so elated - I
was breathing the very air that I had dreamed.
From the airport where nervous excitement bounced from athlete to athlete which continued when I was standing in a sea of international athletes,
to competing at the Green Park and to the sad goodbyes to close friends I had made, this journey was a goal come true.
I had never expected my cycling to bring me this incredible opportunity and I am so appreciative of all the support I have received.
