A confidence-building companion to help 7+-year-olds

Encourage your child to explore their emotions, overcome their fears and boost

their self-confidence with this positive and playful book. Bursting with activities,

handy tips and simple exercises, Grow Your Confidence is the go-to guide for

empowering children.

Key Selling Points:

• Similar to You’re a Star (ISBN: 9781786852359) which has sold over 180,000

copies.

• CBT techniques are endorsed by child psychologists globally, with proven

positive effects on children’s mental health and happiness.

• Greater self-confidence in children correlates to better performance at school

and better relationships.

GROW YOUR CONFIDENCE

GROW YOUR CONFIDENCE

A true friend:

• Listens to you

• Talks to you kindly

• Stands up for you

• Includes you

• Celebrates your

achievements

A false friend:

• Ignores you

• Talks to you unkindly

• Leaves you out

• Hurts your body and/or

your feelings

• Teases or

embarrasses you

Listening to your

body and mind

Confidence is a feeling inside your body together with a way of

thinking about yourself. Sometimes the feeling might be small

like a candle flame. Sometimes it might feel big like a bonfire.

There will always be lots of feelings going on in your body –

emotions and your organs working, as well as the things you can

touch, smell, taste, see and hear.

Can you close your eyes and feel what

is going on in your body right now?

There’s no need to name the feelings or

write anything down – just listen to your

body for a moment.

Feel Braver

As we’ve learned in this book so far, often you have to do things

while you still feel a bit scared in order to grow your confidence.

Here are some ideas to help you on your way to feeling braver

and more confident:

Sing along

Say an

to a confident Hold a lucky affirmation

song (loudly) stone, crystal five times

or teddy

Hug someone

Draw your

special

Stroke a pet

feelings

What makes a

good/bad friend?

How can you tell if someone is a good

friend to you? It can be harder than it

sounds, and school can sometimes feel like

a competition to have the most friends – no

matter if they’re good ones or bad ones.

Just because someone spends time with

you and calls themselves your friend doesn’t

mean they’re a true friend. When you’re with

a true friend, you can relax and be yourself.

If you’re being bullied, it’s not your fault

and you don’t deserve it. Bullying can be

with words or actions and it’s never OK. If

you think you’re being bullied, you can go

to a trusted grown-up and ask for help.

Now, can you do the same with your

mind? Imagine sitting inside your own

head and looking at thought bubbles.

Again, there’s no need to do anything

– just watch and let your thoughts

naturally come and go.

Write down your

worries and rip

them up

Shake your body

Stretch

Take three

deep breaths

Do some

jumping jacks

Blow up

With a false friend you might feel tense,

worried and like you need to keep secrets

about yourself.

Gender Expression

Gender expression is how a person chooses to

display or express their gender identity. Society is a

strange beast… when you think about it; it seems

odd that almost everything you do, say or wear

is a form of gender expression. Haircuts, makeup,

or no make-up, are unofficially categorised as

masculine of feminine as are the way a person

walks and talks and the gestures they use. Even

some jobs are seen to be more suited to one

gender than another. But times are changing

and people are realizing that they don’t have to

stick to the gender bias that tradition dictates.

This 30-step journal will take you on a unique journey to discover who you are

and who you want to be. With interactive CBT-based activities, journalling prompts

and actionable advice to deepen your self-awareness, this book will be your guide

to understanding and empowering the most important person in your life: you.

Key Selling Points:

• Sally Hope is a recovery coach specializing in supporting women who have

experienced domestic abuse. She uses her personal experience alongside her

professional knowledge and her gentle, down-to-earth humour to empower

women to live lives full of joy and hope.

• In a post-Me Too era, many women are realizing that their voices and

experiences matter, and that there is nothing wrong with putting themselves

first. This book provides readers with the tools to do so.

Can you think of any other reasons why it’s

useful to have a strong sense of self?

TO THINK ABOUT

Consider why it’s important to you to get to know yourself better.

Have there been times in your life where you think you might

have done something differently if you’d been practising the art of

“knowing thyself”? Is there anything you hope for from the future

that you think knowing yourself will help with? Think about what

you already know about yourself. Do you like it? If not, why not?

step 1

Who Cares?

• Strong self-esteem enables us to set boundaries and protect ourselves

in relationships. If we understand our own values about what is and isn’t

acceptable, and we realize we deserve to be treated with respect, we are

more likely to be able to build healthy relationships. We’ve all got one

of those friends who gets into a new relationship and begins to change:

suddenly they don’t like the things they used to like; they don’t care

about the things that used to matter to them; their values and priorities

suddenly change. Perhaps you’ve been that person? When we don’t have

a good sense of who we are, it’s easy to become “we” in a relationship

and lose sight of “me”.

• Having a good sense of who we are can help us to be successful: if we

know what’s important to us, we can focus on it; if we know what our

strengths are, we can play to them.

In Chapter Five, we’ll be looking at what success looks like for you (it’s

different for all of us).

Imagine the stickwoman below is you. How well

do you currently feel you know yourself? A half?

A quarter? More? Or less? Colour in the amount

of the stickwoman that represents this.

Know thyself.

ANCIENT GREEK APHORISM

“Who cares who I am? I’m just me: I bumble along, taking each day as it comes.

I don’t need to sit down and think about this stuff, do I?”

Does the above resonate with you? Maybe you’ve never really given much

thought to who you are, what makes you tick, what you love or what really

grinds your gears and why. Perhaps you’ve never really considered what

makes you different from other people, what your unique qualities are or

what you’re particularly passionate about. Do you really need to?

From the time of the ancient Greeks, philosophers, psychologists and wise

sages have urged their students on the quest for self-discovery. But why?

Why is it important to have a good sense of who you are?

• Having a strong sense of our identity means we can understand our place

in the world. If we understand what really matters to us, we can prioritize

those things and give ourselves a sense of purpose.

• A good sense of identity boosts self-esteem. How can we learn to love

ourselves if we don’t even know who we are?

Anxious brain

Anxiety is our body’s way of telling us that we’re facing a threat. It’s a

completely healthy response that originates in our brain, but it affects

our body too and can lead to disordered thoughts, intense emotions,

faster breathing and a racing heartbeat.

The problem is that while our brains are an amazing piece of genetic

engineering, they are also stuck in pre-historic times and think we’re

about to be mauled by a bear. When we sense danger and our brain tells

our body to mobilize for action, it sends out signals in preparation to face

the threat.

While it’s unlikely we’ll have to fight a bear any time soon, our brains

are still hard-wired to help us out of sticky situations, which means that

sometimes they’ll spring into action if we’re facing a difficult but non-lifethreatening

scenario – like a test or a job interview.

Most of us will experience anxiety at some point in our lives, whether

it’s a fleeting experience related to day-to-day stresses, for example, or

whether it’s a chronic condition that you learn to manage throughout

your life.

We can’t remove anxiety completely, but we can gather tools to cope

with it, and in some situations it can be helpful. Anxiety often motivates

us and pushes us on to achieving fantastic things – but we don’t want

it bothering us all the time! There are lots of simple things you can try to

help you cope with anxiety, including a visualization activity on page 51

that will help you find a place of calm.

Thank you anxiety, next!

When anxious thoughts are circling around our heads like a washing

machine on a spin cycle, it doesn’t take long for things to escalate. Often

one worry leads to another, and another, and another, before circling back

to the original worry, and the cycle starts all over again. Psychologists

call this a “thought spiral” rather than a washing machine, and it looks

like this:

Consider what’s bothering you right now. Can your worries be solved with

a practical solution?

If you already know the thought is unhelpful, you can try to simply let it

go. Say in your head or out loud, “Thank you anxiety, I acknowledge that.

But it’s not relevant or helpful right now.” Then cast the thought aside!

Talking

and

Listening

One of the hardest parts about parenting an anxious

child is that they often don’t yet have the language

to articulate how they feel, especially when they are

panicking. Worries about how others might react can

also make your child reluctant to express themselves.

In this chapter we’ll look at how to start a conversation

with your child about how they are feeling.

Finding the right time

and place to talk

Sitting down with your child to “have a chat” might

not be the best strategy, as it could feel unnatural and

intimidating to them. Try to broach the subject while

you’re doing a calm activity, just the two of you. Perhaps

gardening, walking, cooking or colouring together.

Having something else to focus on, and less eye contact,

can make tricky conversations flow more easily.

Take the pressure right off and don’t push if they don’t

want to talk or can’t articulate what’s wrong. Have

patience, trust your gut and let them take the lead.

The right kind of listening will mean your child feels

safe expressing themselves to you. Let them have

their say and respond by using body language to

show you are listening and understanding. When the

moment’s right, paraphrase what they have said,

showing they have your full attention. It’s important

to remember that you don’t need to agree with your

child – a lot of worries can be irrational – but you can

still affirm and empathize with them.

Try these phrases:

“I hear you.”

“I can see why that would make you feel sad/

worried/upset.”

“That makes sense.”

“How does that feel in your body?”

This technique is called active listening and it’s used

by therapists to encourage the speaker to open up.

Pressed flower wall art

A dried flower can be used in many ways – in a journal or scrapbook, as a decoration

to display in your home or as an addition to candles or soaps, to name but a few. This

step-by-step guide shows you how to make a simple piece of art to hang on your wall

so that you can be reminded of the outdoors every time you look at it. Although these

instructions use only one flower, your design is completely up to you – be minimal or

fill the frame with colours and shapes that bring you happy feelings and memories.

A flower (or leaf )

Several heavy books

2 sheets of newspaper

Picture frame

PVA glue

Paint brush

White card that fits

into your frame

Choose a flower to press. Make sure that the plant is

healthy and not wilted or damaged. Remove any dirt

from the stem (but keep petals dry) then trim the stem so

the flower will fit inside your frame.

Choose a book that is the same length or longer than

your flower. Cut two pieces of newspaper the same size as

the book. Arrange the flower on one piece of newspaper,

place it inside the book, then place the other piece of

newspaper on top and shut the book gently.

Stack more books on top of the flower book so that the

flower is being pressed by an even weight, and leave the

flower to dry for 3–4 weeks.

Once this time has passed, open the book and remove the

flower from the newspaper. Be careful: the petals can be

incredibly thin and delicate.

Gently apply PVA glue to the back of your flower with a

paintbrush and place it on the white card.

Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry before placing

the card in the frame. Then, hang up your creation and

admire it!

The amazing

power of shinrin-yoku

The practice of shinrin-yoku – also known as forest bathing – is

scientifically proven to improve our overall well-being. Studies show

that after only a short amount of time in the arbour of a forest, stress

levels are reduced. Walking among trees decreases the body’s stress

response, which, in turn, lowers your levels of cortisol, the stress

hormone. This also contributes to lowering your heart rate and blood

pressure; as a result, you feel calmer and your body is healthier. It

is also thought that the quiet atmosphere, beautiful scenery and

temperate climate often found in forests all contribute to this sense

of wellness.

Forest bathing also offers a free aromatherapy session. Natural

essential oils, generally known as phytoncides, are emitted by trees to

protect themselves from germs and insects, and they have a positive

impact on humans too by naturally boosting our immune systems.

Live in each season

as it passes; breathe the

air… taste the fruit, and

resign yourself to the

influence of the earth.

planet. With the advice inside, you’ll start to feel more confident and ready to take

Key Selling Points:

• A friendly starting point for someone wanting to help themselves, or could be

• A similar title, It’s OK Not to Be OK (ISBN: 9781786859853), has sold over

Why Does

Everything

Seem So Sh*t?

1CHAPTER

ometimes, life can feel a bit sh*t. From

Spersonal crises to global fears, some days

it’s hard to filter out the bad news in order to

embrace the good bits of life that feel as if

they’re out of reach (they’re still there, we

promise). This chapter takes a look at some

of the reasons you might be feeling stressed,

low, anxious or just plain sh*t – because before

you can get back to living your best life, it can

be helpful to understand and address what’s

preventing you.

You’re not alone

If you feel like everything in your life is

a bit sh*t right now, you’re not alone.

No, really – you aren’t. Even people

who look outwardly happy and shiny will

experience feelings of insecurity, doubt

and worry. And even if they’re feeling

shiny and happy right now, chances

are they’ve had to navigate some sh*t

times in the past. The point is, no one’s

life is perfect 24/7, even if it looks

that way from the outside: all of us will

have to navigate difficult, stressful and

upsetting times, so always remember

you’re not alone.

The sliding scale

of sh*t events

There are many situations, events or

experiences that can make you feel a bit

sh*t. These can be day-to-day annoyances

(for example, your alarm not going off in the

morning, a cancelled train or a spilled coffee);

temporary stresses (such as struggling in

an exam, financial worries or social media

pressures); or huge life upheavals (such as

bereavement or relationship breakdown).

It’s a bit like a sliding scale of sh*t events:

we can all probably identify times when

we’ve experienced things on both ends of the

spectrum. The trouble is, when you have lots

of these sh*t events going on at once, it can

become overwhelming. And even if there are

no big sh*t events in your life at the moment,

lots of small or medium sh*t events piled up

on top of each other can leave you feeling

equally low, run-down and lacking in any

sense of happiness or joy.

But don’t despair – by learning the tools to

strengthen your resilience and mindset, you

can make it through even the toughest times.

increasingly pressing global topic.

CHAPTER 1:

ANxIeTy AND yOU

You have probably felt it before; thoughts seem to whirl around your mind

at the speed of light, your heart starts thumping, your stomach churns,

your breathing speeds up, you can’t focus on anything else.

This is anxiety.

Maybe you feel all of these symptoms when something stressful happens

to you, or maybe you feel just one of them. Or perhaps your worries show

themselves in another way. Anxiety is our mind and body’s reaction to

stress, and this looks different for everyone.

Believe it or not, we were designed to feel anxious. Evolutionarily, anxiety

serves a purpose; when danger is around, our body prepares itself to take

action by sharpening and increasing some of our physiological functions,

INTRODUCTION

Has your anxiety been holding you back for far too long?

If so, you’re in the right place.

A little anxiety is normal for everyone, but it doesn’t have to be a dark cloud over your

life. The Anxiety Fix is designed to help you identify your anxiety triggers, interrupt

the worry cycle before it spirals out of control, reframe negative thoughts, and calm

your nervous system during life’s stressful moments.

Any time your brain starts to run away with anxious, unhelpful thoughts, you can use

this book as your very own box of tricks to steady your mind, relax your body, and

bring your thoughts back to a neutral (or better yet, positive!) place.

The exercises in this book will prompt you to discover why you feel anxious, and how

to acknowledge your emotions without letting them take over your day-to-day life.

The WORRy CyCle

When we come up against something stressful or start to ruminate on things that

we lack control over, the worry cycle kicks in. What begins as a harmless thought

can take on a life of its own as worries compound. Eventually, a feeling of overwhelm

sets in.

Below you can see the worry cycle in action.

INTRODUCTION

Confidence – if you could bottle it and sell it, you’d be rich. So what if there was a

way you could boost your own confidence – and you don’t need a magic potion to

make it happen? This book will help explain why your confidence is low, how you can

give yourself a boost and help you change the way you look at your life. You don’t

need to sit down and read it all in one go either. Some days you might want to dip in

and find a practical exercise to help lift you up. Or maybe you just want to read an

inspirational quote or mantra to see you through your day or use one of the practical

exercises to focus your mind. There’s no right or wrong way to move towards a more

confident you – the most important thing is that you make a start. So prepare to

remaining pages of this chapter are here to support you.

How it shows up

Panic attacks

a feeling of doom

Use the fill-in section below to explore the reasons why you think

you might have health anxiety. Allow yourself to write as freely as

possible. You can keep this for yourself or show it to a trusted friend

or loved one and get them to give you some feedback.

I can’t stop thinking about what’s going on in the news

around a health scare

If I knew how to stop worrying I would, but it feels like it’s

in control of me

I worry about the fact that I’m worrying

I keep checking my symptoms online

I have stopped eating certain types of food just in case I

get ill

I am convinced I’ve got a serious illness, or I’m going to die

of a horrible disease

I have recently changed jobs, moved house or abroad,

broken up with someone, changed my life, lost a loved one

I am going through puberty or menopause

A panic attack is the sudden onset of a feeling of terror. It comes

along with lots of physical symptoms, like shallow breathing,

clammy hands, a racing heart and even fainting. Sometimes, the

experience feels so intense, you might think you’re having a heart

attack or dying. You’re not, but it can feel frightening. When you

have health anxiety, a worry can grow into a panic attack slowly,

while at other times, you might suddenly panic at the idea that

what you’re going through is never going to leave you. If you have

lots of panic attacks, you might start to fear having more, which

can trigger more panic.

Ruminating

You might fear having a serious illness or worry that you’ll develop

one. The types of worry might be focused around a specific

theme, such as cancer, or dying young. This might be as a result

of something you’ve seen or watched, or can be as a result of an

experience you’ve had, such as a long stay in hospital, family

members falling ill, or a period of your own illness that has triggered

Even when you’re not panicking or dwelling on specific thoughts,

it’s common to experience a feeling of general dread or doom

in your body that sits there with you most of the day. This may

ebb and flow at specific times of the day, and you might notice

a pattern around what time of day it comes and goes. It can be

helpful to keep a diary of times of day this happens, and anything

you did (such as food you ate, what you drank, people you spoke

to, activity you did) just beforehand.

“What if” thoughts

A classic hallmark of anxiety is a thought process that always

begins with: “What if…?” Here are some examples – can you relate

to any of them?

“What if I never get over this and end up in a hospital ward?”

“What if the doctor missed something serious?”

“What if it’s a tumour?”

a phobia around it happening again. It is common for worries to

build on top of each other, so that you start worrying about the fact

“What if I go out and there’s no exit to escape if I need to?”

you are worrying. It’s common to try to think your way out of these

loops, only to find the more you think about or try to shut out the

thoughts, the more intense they become.

Life has plenty of challenges, and it’s normal to feel anxious from time to time. But

when social anxiety starts to affect your day-to-day life, it’s time to take action. This

friendly guide will help you take the steps towards managing your social anxiety

and provide the tools you need to approach every social situation with confidence.

Key Selling Points:

• A practical and easy-to-follow workbook offering actionable advice and

guided exercises to help readers work through their social anxiety.

• Contains diet, exercise, lifestyle and general well-being advice.

• In any given week, one in six adults will experience some form of neurotic

health problem. This book aims to open up the conversation about social

anxiety and help the reader to feel more confident in addressing their feelings.

What does social anxiety

sound, feel and look like?

Social anxiety is a self-perpetuating cycle that begins with negative thoughts

about social situations, leading to self-doubt and fear. This, in turn, influences

your body’s response and the safety behaviours you adopt, such as scrolling on

your phone to avoid eye contact or someone striking up a conversation.

Imagine you’ve been invited to a party where you won’t know many people.

Social Anxiety thoughts and beliefs sound like:

Before the party

I’m rubbish at

I may blush

making conversation.

I’ll get it wrong.

or get sweaty.

What if they think

I’m awkward?

During the party

I sound boring.

They’re talking about me.

After the party

I made a fool

of myself.

I’ll stumble

on my words.

Everyone is looking

at and judging me.

I sounded

cringy.

I’m a failure.

I’m anxious.

I’m not good enough.

I won’t fit in.

I’m blushing and

shaking; they can see.

I can’t think of what to say.

I shouldn’t have gone.

I can’t handle

social situations.

I looked

awkward and

nervous.

Social anxiety feels like: Shortness of breath.

Shaking or trembling.

Racing heart or

palpitations.

A choking feeling.

Tightness in

your chest.

Feeling dizzy

or lightheaded.

Sweating.

Blushing.

Headache.

Feeling sick or

upset stomach.

Hot flushes or

Dry throat

chilling feeling.

and mouth.

Blurred vision.

Lump in throat.

Shaky Numbness, tingling

voice. or muscles tensing.

Even the thought of meeting new people or attending a party can trigger

physical changes in your body.

Social anxiety behaviour looks like:

Cancelling plans.

Staying out of

the limelight.

Sitting near the

exit to escape.

Using social media to

replace real life connection.

Rehearsing

conversations

in advance.

Not speaking up

in groups or classes.

Finding excuses to leave early.

Saying no to invites.

Relying on comfort friends

or family to go to events.

Afraid to ask questions

when unsure.

Not taking part in social activities (avoidance) or engaging in social activities

but relying on safe people or props to make you feel comfortable – like sticking

to your best friend or sitting at the back of the room where no one will see you

(safety behaviours) – are unhelpful and make social anxiety worse.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s quite a normal part of social anxiety.

MY SOCIAL ANXIETY

What makes you feel anxious? Perhaps it’s a specific situation you go out of

your way to avoid because it fills you with dread or a thought that keeps you up

all night worrying. It could be everyday interactions or meeting certain people

that worry you.

Writing it all down is like a safe space where you can open up to explore your

thoughts and feelings, plus it helps to lighten heavy thoughts, so you have more

head space. Remember, be honest with yourself as best as you can. Here are

some prompts to help you work through anxiety.

Write down any social situations which trigger negative thoughts or fear.

Example: I am anxious of meeting new people and worry about saying something

ridiculous.

Stay Hopeful

Hope is the unshakeable belief

that there is light at the end of the

tunnel, even when all seems lost.

OPRAH WINFREY

As you’ve seen, when social anxiety strikes, it’s a vicious cycle that

can easily spiral out of control, leaving you feeling like you’re sinking

with no hope in sight. When hope is lost, you lose motivation to

change. But the cycle can be broken by learning about your anxiety

and ways to help yourself – you’ve already taken a superb step to

do just that.

When heavy and painful thoughts take over, and you’re struggling

to feel hopeful, even taking one step from this workbook plants a

seed of hope – you’re moving forward. Don’t forget, there is always

hope and it is entirely possible for pain to pass.

Keep building on your progress, even if changes don’t happen

quickly, that’s okay –keep going, they will happen. Be kind and

patient with yourself because we all have good and bad days and

that’s OK, too. Every day is an opportunity for a fresh new start.

By celebrating your wins no matter how small –your confidence will

grow. Keep working towards your ideal outcome, the next pages are

with you every step of the way. You’ve got this!

Welcome to this workbook. Whatever your reasons

for holding this book in your hands right now, the

intention is that the following pages will be a supportive

companion as you come to understand the impact of

grief and find healing. Your experience will be unique

to you, yet there is a shared, underlying natural process

which helps us move - unpredictably, yet intentionally -

from the grip of grief towards healing and wholeness. It

is normal for this process to feel lonely, but you are not

alone. Right now you might not be sure what you want

to get from this workbook. That’s okay. Even calling it

a workbook might sound off-putting, but the process

If you’re someone who regularly feels trapped in a negative thought loop,

Overcome Don’t Overthink can help you break this cycle of self-criticism so you

can feel confident in everything you do. This supportive guide will help you quieten

racing thoughts, declutter your mind and embrace positive thinking.

Key Selling Points:

• A practical and easy-to-follow guide offering actionable advice to help

readers free themselves from racing thoughts and anxious thinking.

• Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems affecting adults

today, and overthinking is one of its most common triggers. This book aims

to open up the conversation about anxiety and help the reader to feel more

confident in addressing their worries.

What is Overthinking?

What is Overthinking?

1

What is

Overthinking?

Whether it’s worrying about what could happen, or

ruminating on what did happen, our ability to think

critically – about situations or about ourselves – can be

a double-edged sword. Spending time in our own heads

can sometimes be insightful; but if it’s interfering with our

ability to take action when we hit an obstacle, then it’s

probably doing more harm than good.

Before we start tackling our overthinking habits, it can

be useful to understand why we overthink in the first

place. Read on to find out why your worries might have

gone rogue, and what that looks like for you.

Why am I overthinking?

Whether it’s worrying about what could happen,

sometimes we manage to convince ourselves that

dwelling on a problem will help us find the solution.

But when we label our overthinking as ‘problem solving’

we’re doing the exact opposite to what we should be

doing – problem fixing.

Here are some reasons we overthink:

~ You’re dwelling on the problem rather than focusing

on a solution.

~ You’re indecisive – you’re not looking at a problem

from every angle, you’re procrastinating!

~ You’re struggling with low self-esteem, stress, or

anxiety – all can cause you to question your decisions,

meaning you overthink both the problem, and a

potential solution.

If you run into

a wall, don’t turn

around and give up.

Figure out how

to climb it.

Michael Jordan

Negative thoughts are normal

We all carry a little negativity around with us; it’s practically

impossible to spend all day, every day floating on your own

personal cloud of happiness when you’ve got a deadline

looming and a toddler providing a soundtrack that is

making your brain hurt. So, it’s important to recognise that

negative thoughts are a typical experience for all of us –

and they aren’t something that can be solved with positive

thinking alone. The aim is to stay realistic, to recognise

that you’re human, and to remain hopeful during the

tough times.

Making a birth plan

As you approach the third trimester, it’s worth sitting down with your

partner to discuss your birth plan. A birth plan is a set of preferences

for how she’d like the birth of your baby to go, from the location and

environment she wants to create during labour, to how much intervention

she’s willing to accept from the doctors and nurses. Keep in mind, these

should be preferences, not certainties… birth is unpredictable and rarely

goes exactly according to plan, so you’ll need to bake in some flexibility

and be open to compromise when the time comes (see page XX for

more details).

Things to decide in advance

Where – hospital or home birth?

Who – who does she want in the room during the birth? You / another birth

partner / doula?

Environment – music or quiet space? Dimly lit? Diffuser with

essential oils?

Type of birth – vaginal or elected caesarean / C-section? Water birth / on

bed / off bed? Hypnobirthing?

Intervention – is she willing for the doctor or midwife to use forceps,

ventouse/suction cups, or do an episiotomy (an incision made in the

tissue between the vaginal opening and the anus during childbirth) if they

need to get the baby out quickly? You should be aware that forceps can

cause bruising, cuts or marks on your baby’s head while a ventouse can

temporarily affect the shape of your baby’s head after they’re born.

Pain relief – nothing / paracetamol / TENS machine / gas and air / epidural?

Guided pushing – does she want the midwife to guide her through the

final stages of labour, and/or support the baby’s head through the crowing

stage (this can reduce the risk of vaginal tearing)?

Gender reveal – do you want the midwife to say what the baby’s sex is

when they’re born, or would you rather see for yourself at the right time?

Delayed cord clamping – otherwise known as “wait for white”, some

parents choose after the birth to delay clamping and cutting the umbilical

cord until it stops pulsating and turns white. This usually takes just a few

minutes, and means your baby gets all the vital blood from the placenta

that it needs. In an emergency, this won’t always be possible.

Vitamin K injection – after the birth, you will be offered an injection of

vitamin K for your baby, as this helps prevent a rare bleeding disorder

called haemorrhagic disease of the newborn. While this injection is highly

recommended, some parents decline it as they don’t like the thought of

injecting their baby straight after they’re born.

Delivering the placenta – after your baby is born, your partner will still

need to deliver the placenta which has been keeping your baby alive for

the past nine months. To do this, your partner can either choose:

active management – where she receives an injection of oxytocin

into her thigh after the birth, to make her womb contract and deliver

the placenta faster. It lowers the risk of heavy bleeding after the

birth but can cause additional nausea and make your partner’s

afterpains (contraction-like pains after birth) worse.

physiological management – where she has no intervention and lets

everything happen naturally (which can take up to an hour).

DID YOU KNOW?

Many mums today are choosing to eat their placenta after birth,

either by turning it into smoothies (blending small chunks with fruit

and juice) or through placenta encapsulation (where the placenta

is dried, powdered and turned into pills to swallow). Though the

benefits aren’t scientifically proven, fans of this believe eating the

placenta can help increase milk supply, balance hormones and lower

the chances of postnatal depression. If your partner wants to try

this, look into getting the placenta professionally prepped and make

sure your midwife knows your plan so that they store the placenta

correctly after birth.

Once you’ve written everything down, save your birth plan on your phone

or print out a copy to put in your hospital bag.

Intro to hypnobirthing

If your partner is feeling anxious about giving birth, unsure how she will

get through it or deal with the pain of labour, hypnobirthing could be

the answer.

First things first, hypnobirthing has nothing to do with being ‘hypnotised’.

It is a long-established antenatal programme designed to release fear,

build confidence during labour, and provide you and your partner with

the knowledge and techniques you need for a more comfortable, calm

and positive birth experience.

If this sounds too good to be true, you aren’t the first to think that.

Most new dads start off as sceptics when hypnobirthing is first brought

up. But if you look into it properly, you’ll quickly appreciate just how much

about hypnobirthing makes sense.

Addressing the culture of fear surrounding birth

Hypnobirthing is about training the mind to think about birth and ‘pain’

differently. There is so much fear that surrounds giving birth, made worse

by exaggerated depictions of childbirth on TV and horror stories passed

down through the generations. Even the language around childbirth –

like ‘going into labour’ and ‘contractions’ - conjures up images of pain and

suffering. It’s no wonder that most new mums’ minds are loaded with fear

and negative pre-conceptions as they approach their due date.

When it comes to childbirth, fear is a mother’s worst enemy as it makes

her body release adrenaline which slows and can ultimately halt the

progress of birth. But, when fear is removed, her body produces the feelgood

hormones - endorphins - which prevent the production of adrenaline

and other stress hormones and should help a mother have a shorter and

more comfortable birth experience.

Part of the hypnobirthing training is changing the narrative around

childbirth and using different language – for example, talking about

“powerful surges” rather than “painful contractions”. Another key element

is removing fear from the process, by surrounding yourselves with positive

birth stories and avoiding reading, watching, or listening to negative ones.

Positive affirmations and the important role dads

can play

Positive birth affirmations play a big role in hypnobirthing and can be

incredibly powerful for boosting your partner’s birthing confidence. These

affirmations – usually provided as scripts for you to read to your partner

– help her visualise the different stages of birth and what her body is

experiencing, while giving you a clear role in helping her have the positive

birth she wants.

By learning about hypnobirthing together, you will play an integral part

in preparing your partner to give birth, practising the techniques, and

working on the affirmation scripts together. You will get to know her birth

plan and preferences intimately, earning your spot at her side during the

birth, while knowing exactly what to say to reassure her and help her to

stay calm, relaxed, and focussed when the time comes.

Being prepared for anything

One of the key benefits of hypnobirthing is that it can be used in any

birthing scenario, keeping you and your partner focussed and relaxed

even if your birth plan changes unexpectedly. No two births are the

same, and sometimes you might need to change your plan for the safety

of your partner or your baby. Hypnobirthing gives you the techniques to

stay calm and avoid fear in any situation.

DADVICE:

It’s never too late to learn hypnobirthing, but it’s recommended that

you start around the halfway point of pregnancy (the longer you

have to practise the techniques, the better). To get started, order

The Hypnobirthing Book by Katharine Graves, which will teach you

everything you need to know. You can also take online or in-person

hypnobirthing classes if you’re short on time or your budget allows.

Inside these pages you will find guided exercises designed to empower you, shift

your perspective and help you break free from the cycle of comparison. Packed

with simple advice and methods to challenge your inner critic, this book helps you

develop a personalized roadmap to prioritize self-care and self-acceptance, and

banish self-doubt for good.

Key Selling Points:

• This guided journal taps into the key themes raised in Cheryl Rickman’s successful

previous title, You Are Enough (ISBN: 9781800070028), but contains all-new material

for a hands-on approach to banishing comparison and self-doubt.

• Interest in emotional well-being continues to boom, with hospitals, schools

and workplaces introducing new initiatives to focus on this growing issue.

Part One

Balance

The key to “enoughness” is balance. We can feel good enough and

like we have enough when we find sufficient balance between

appreciation and achievement, between compassion and comparison

and between self-improvement and self-acceptance.

In this section we'll redress the imbalances that external and internal

influences can have over our lives. We’ll balance acceptance of

our weaknesses with development of our strengths and counterbalance

our default negativity bias with positive reframes that swing

the enoughness pendulum back to a happier, healthier and more

reasonable medium.

A sense of balance enables us to be enough, have enough, do

enough, look enough and feel enough. It helps us to focus as much

on appreciating what we already have and who we already are with

striving for what we want to have and who we hope to become.

Find balance between best and

worst for authenticity

When suffering from anxiety, our brains tend to focus on the worst

possible eventuality and we can find ourselves caught up in spirals of

doom as we imagine what might happen. One way to counter this is to

play the “Worst-Case, Best-Case, Most-Likely-Case Scenario Game”

to find a more balanced perspective and bring your thoughts back to

reality. It involves imagining the worst-case-scenario and attributing

a percentage of likelihood to that happening, doing the same with an

equally outlandish best-case-scenario, before considering the mostlikely-case

scenario and attributing a percentage of likelihood to

that happening. This exercise helps to bring our brains back to what

is most likely, most real and most authentic. We can do something

similar with our thoughts about our enoughness to move from best

self and worst self to authentic true enough self.

What does your best-self look like, feel like, have, do/achieve?

What does your authentic real-self look like, feel like, have, do/

achieve?

How does it make you feel when you consistently don’t measure up

to being your best self?

Is it reasonable to expect to be your best-self 24/7 or is it more

reasonable to accept that you will sometimes look a mess, feel a

mess and achieve very little? And that's okay?

We’ll explore how being your best-self 24-7 is unreasonable and not

sustainable and what your authentic realistic self looks like, feels like

and accomplishes so you can create a more reasonable definition of

what good enough truly is.

What does your worst-self look like, feel like, have, do/achieve?

Crime

Deviance

The term “criminology” is a combination of the Latin

“crimen”, meaning accusation, and the Greek “logiā”

meaning the study of. Today, criminology is known

as the scientific study of crime. As one of the largest

criminal law… committed without defense or

justification, and sanctioned by the state

Paul Tappan

Criminological research goes beyond crime and explores

all actions that wander from the norm. Some studies focus

on rebellious behaviour, or “deviants” – those who dare to

break social rules or group expectations. Deviance can be

criminal or non-criminal, and its definition varies across

and fastest-growing branches of Sociology, it explores

crime as a social rather than a legal phenomenon.

Lawyers are concerned with the content of the law,

legal process and if an individual has committed a

specific offence. Instead, criminologists investigate

why people engage in illegal behaviour, when actions

are outlawed and how to prevent offending generally.

This chapter sets out the meaning of crime and

introduces you to the science and research that defines

the discipline. The different elements of a crime will

be explained, like intent and harm, to understand

how the different parts shape criminological theories.

The presentation of crime in the media will also

be discussed, and how it can influence the criminal

justice system. With a clearer understanding of the

discipline, you will see how criminologists play a

A crime is an act that violates criminal law, like murder or

theft. Unlike torts, which are wrongful acts against private

individuals (that can lead to civil action, like negligence),

crime relates to offences against the public or the state.

This means the classification of crimes and responses to

them depend on the culture and the political environment

of each society. These differences are all decided and

enforced by people, and this is why criminology falls under

the umbrella discipline of Sociology. Criminologists look

violate formal laws, while informal deviant behaviour

refers to actions that violate social norms. All forms of

deviance can result in negative consequences. For example,

if you break the law, you could be fined or arrested, and if

you break social etiquette, you may be ostracized by your

peers. Studying deviance helps criminologists understand

how social control operates and the way cultural norms

How to Read the Universe

How to Understand Signs, Synchronicity

and Other Cosmic Clues

Discover the ancient language of the universe, decipher its messages and unravel

its mysteries – all you need is this book and your own intuitive powers. Filled

with advice and inspiration, this book will be your essential guide to reading the

cosmos, helping you to discover your true path and find both magic and meaning

in the everyday.

Key Selling Point:

• Manifestation has become a massive trend on social media platforms such

as TikTok and Instagram. The concept of “asking the universe” for a sign as a

way to monitor the progress of your manifestation and to determine whether

you are on the right path is integral to this practice.

Vibrations

What are signs from the

UNIVERSE?

Have you ever seen the most beautiful butterfly right

at the moment when you were thinking of a loved

one who has passed on? This chapter introduces us

to the beauty of signs from the universe: what they

are and how our understanding of them has grown

over the last 70 years.

From Carl Jung to Oprah Winfrey, we’ll look at the

meaning of the terms “synchronicity” and “paying attention”

and understand how we can apply these concepts

to reading the universe. We’ll also learn a little

bit about how the universe works energetically, how

to ask the universe for a sign, and how to spot and

interpret those signs that will make your heart melt.

Universal Energy

Let’s look at how universal energy creates synchronicity.

Albert Einstein proved that everything in our universe

is made up of energy. This energy constantly flows and

changes form, and it lasts forever, so it can’t be created or

destroyed.

Universal energy sustains life, providing vital energy to

all living systems.

Life force energy is all around us, and whether we can see

it or not, it’s an indisputable part of our existence. Our

thoughts, emotions and actions are all created from this

source. By understanding this, we can bring enormous

healing, grounding, personal power and synchronicity

into our lives.

The concepts of vibration and frequency can help us to

understand the law of attraction more fully.

Because everything is energy, and energy is constantly

moving, everything has its own vibration (including us).

We are each spinning whirlpools of interactive energy,

with our own unique energy signature.

Different energies vibrate at different frequencies, and

so we will attract things or people vibrating at a similar

frequency to ourselves.

Our experiences, thoughts and emotions also have a

vibrational frequency. In order to prevent negative things

entering our life, we need to change our frequency so

we can attract something that we might desire more. We

have to make ourselves a vibrational match to our goal, so

that “like can attract like”.

Question: What or who would you currently like to attract

into your life, and how might you change your current

thoughts or behaviours in order to become more of a match

to that person or thing?

perfect for beginner and established crystal lovers alike. Whether you’re looking

to harness the nurturing qualities of jasper or the creative influence of citrine,

there’s really no end to what these natural treasures can do for you.

crystals to help you make the most of your healing journey.

HOW TO SELECT

YOUR CRYSTALS

HOW TO CLEANSE

YOUR CRYSTALS

AGATE

AMBER

There is no scientific way to choose crystals but, as

with everything in life, try to go with your instincts.

Spend time picking them up; see which ones hold your

attention. Set an intention with the crystal(s) that you

choose. You can do this while meditating and holding

the stone in your hand as you state what you need from

the crystal’s energy.

The myriad different choices available may seem

overwhelming at first, but a crystal’s colour will give

you a clue to its properties. Red is associated with

courage, so carry red jasper if you need a bravery boost.

Orange aids creativity and yellow instils happiness.

Turn to green to balance the emotions. Blue allows

clear communication, indigo helps you to tune into

your intuition and violet can increase your spiritual

awareness.

If you have a specific requirement, however, you can

refer to the A–Z of crystals in the following pages to

discover the right one for your needs.

Some practitioners of crystal healing advocate the

importance of cleansing and preparing your crystals

before use, so that any negative or old energy is

removed, as if giving it a reboot. There are several ways

to do this including the following.

• Rinse in running water for a minute and leave to dry in

the fresh air – this is not suitable for brittle stones, as

they could erode in the water.

• Submerge in salt water for 24 hours and leave to air-dry.

• Bathe in moonlight or sunlight for 12 hours.

and emotional security

From the Babylonians to the medieval times – and right

up to the present day – agate has been used to protect

against bad energy and natural disasters. In Chinese

medicine it was traditionally used to clear negative

thoughts; nowadays, it is still considered to have

powers of protection, as well as the capacity to unblock

emotional centres to help release tension in the heart

and the throat, thus improving emotional connection

and helping you to find your voice – both literally and

figuratively.

Amber has the translucent quality of crystal, but it is

actually fossilized resin from pine trees. This stone has

historically been used as protection against negative

forces or seen as a good-luck talisman to ancient

peoples.

In more recent years, it has been prized for the

exceptional energies it discharges when under friction.

Amber has been shown to be beneficial in relieving

anxiety, uplifting negative moods, and even in removing

pain and inflammation when placed against the skin;

for this reason, the stone remains popular in alternative

medicinal practice.

CLAUDE MONET

(1840-1926)

As a founding member of impressionism, Claude Monet’s work was to

change the course of art history. It was the moment of art for art’s sake:

there was no longer a need for a moral purpose in painting, but rather a

desire to portray scenes from everyday life. Monet’s work is beautiful in

every way; his colours and caressing brushstrokes invite us to experience

nature just by looking at his paintings. Throughout his life, Monet always

focused on the same object: light. He believed that painting was the

most effective way to study it. “It doesn’t matter what I am painting. What

matters is the incidence of light and weather on what I paint,” he wrote.

V I N C E N T

VAN GOGH

(1853-1890)

Nature was Van Gogh’s raw material. “If you truly

love nature, you will find beauty everywhere,”

he said. He worked en plein air, painting

frantically in the sunshine. He would go out

into the countryside with his easel, canvas and

oil paints, walking until he found that magical

place to portray. Expressive brushstrokes, loaded

with oil paints in ochres, blues and greens,

formed Van Gogh’s personal style. Far from

being figurative, Van Gogh’s landscapes are

imbued with his gestural and subjective gaze.

Wild garlic banishing spell

Wild garlic has both banishing and protective

properties, so it is perfect for this cleansing spell. This

herb can be foraged from damp areas in deciduous

woodland, and is a sign that the woodland is ancient,

just like the practice of herbalism itself. Wild garlic is

best picked in February and March – you can’t miss its

distinctive garlic scent, so just follow your nose! Pick

the leaves low down, close to the ground, being careful

to leave the bulb in place so that the plant can regrow.

Chapter three:

RAISE YOUR

VIBRATIONS

Water is essential to a healthy body and a positive

energy flow. It is a remarkable substance, scientifically

speaking, and this extraordinary chemistry of energy

is absorbed by all living things. It is only because of

the molecular structure of water that energy flows to

the tips of leaves. Water clings to things and carries

cosmic energy.

Each morning, start your day with energy infused

water. Meditate for a moment with a glass of water

before you. Start with a few deep, focused breaths to

relax. Spread your hands over the glass and visualise a

stream of bright light flowing through your body and

into the water. Begin to feel the light energy as perhaps

a warm or slight tingling sensation leaving the palms of

the hands. Visualize the water glittering and sparkling

with light and life. As you drink the water sense the light

energy radiating within you, rejuvenating and enlivening

There is so much cosmic energy flowing through trees.

While the vibrant energy from the sun surges through

all plant life, trees are deeply rooted powerhouses,

storing decades, sometimes centuries of starlight. Trees

are bursting with life through the spring to autumn

months. Even in winter they maintain a powerful

potential for new life.

It is possible to see the energy field of a tree and witness

its aura outline. Gaze up at a tree’s outline against the sky

when it is in leaf. Take a little time with this and relax

into it. It may be best to try this sitting down, after a few

deep, mindful breaths. Allow your whole body to relax,

particularly your eyes. Try not to focus on the leaf outline

itself, but just beyond it.

After a time, you should start to notice the aura: it will

seem just a little lighter than the surrounding sky at first,

and quite close to the leaf outline. Sometimes it seems as

energy field.

Trees are so generous with their abundant earth energy.

Time spent under the canopy of trees never fails to raise

our energy vibration. Try an energy walk in woodland.

Walk mindfully among the trees, particularly when leaves

are abundant. Become aware of the leaf canopy as you

walk and the vibrant array of greens. Think of yourself as

bathing, submerged beneath an energy sea. Notice how

the leaf canopy ripples with sunlight.

Move slowly between the trees and spread your hands

on their bark. Remind yourself that just like you, trees

have an energy field aura. As you move from tree to tree,

become aware that you are passing between energy auras.

As your aura blends with each tree aura, try to maintain an

openness and generosity of being. Allow yourself to give as

well as receive the abundant living energy.

From the famous Arthurian legends to monsters and faeries, The Little Book of

Folklore explores the magical and mystical tales that have shaped the British Isles.

Filled with stories of iconic characters like Robin Hood and Merlin, as well as

lesser-known tales of giants and witches, this book is a beginner’s guide to this

world of myth and wonder.

Key Selling Points:

• A new addition to the accessible Little Book of... series, this title offers the

perfect introduction to British and Irish folklore, providing key information

and retelling popular stories.

• Another title in the series, The Little Book of Witchcraft (ISBN: 9781800074071),

has sold over 12,000 copies.

THE GREEN MAN

WHO IS THE GREEN MAN?

Chapter two:

THE NATURAL

WORLD

The landscape of the British Isles is amazingly

diverse. Travel its length and breadth and you’ll

find everything from craggy coastline and quiet

rolling pasture, to mudflats, moorland, snowy

peaks and wooded valleys packed in, side by side.

Take to the islands’ lanes and by-ways and

you’ll find every barrow has its resident spirit,

every hole its boggit and every stream its dryad or

troll. Even the place names reflect a passion for

folktales, like Devil’s Dyke in Sussex, The Giant’s

Causeway in Northern Ireland and Mermaid’s

Pool in the Peak District.

Folk tales were used to explain Britain’s

many geographical and botanical mysteries,

while festivals like May Day and Michaelmas,

and practices like lighting bonfires and maypole

dancing, were used to keep Mother Nature in

The Green Man is a widely recognised symbol of

British folklore. He is usually depicted with a bearded

face thick with leaves and foliage – often with oak leaves

and acorns which were sacred symbols among the

Druids and in Celtic society.

Carvings of the Green Man image are common in

medieval churches in the UK. This has led researchers

to speculate that he represents a bridge between ancient

pagan beliefs and the Christianity which replaced them.

There are some good examples of Green Man

carvings in St David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire,

Widecombe-in-the-Moor in Devon and Rosslyn

Chapel in Midlothian.

With his face of leaves and twigs, and creepers

sprouting from his mouth, the Green Man is the male

embodiment of nature itself. He’s thought to be the

guardian of the rivers and the forests and is a symbol of

fertility and re-birth as winter ends and spring returns.

Beltane or May Day celebrations across Britain

still feature the Green Man to this day, either with

representations of him woven into the decorations of

the event or as a Green Man figure who takes part in

the parade in full costume.

OTHER NAMES FOR THE GREEN MAN

It’s thought the May King, who sits alongside the May

Queen at May Day celebrations, is just another version

of the Green Man.

As well as The May King, The Green Man is also

sometimes known as the Green Knight and Jack in

good humour and ensure a good harvest. This

chapter shares a handful of folk tales and folk

practices rooted in the natural world.

A pocket-sized guide to all things vegan grub, this little book is the perfect gift

for students. Featuring an array of budget-friendly, flavourful and easy-to-make

meals, this book gives you the vegan recipes you need to spice up your student

suppers.

Key Selling Points:

• Features guidance on cooking and staple vegan ingredients, along with

vegan recipes for a range of starters, mains and desserts.

• Almost two in every five students often cook meals from scratch, with 14

per cent following a vegan diet (compared to just 4 per cent of the general

public) and 55 per cent of UK students supporting a move towards plantbased

food.

The

Basics

This is the chapter where it’s okay to be basic. In fact, be

damn right proud of it. Most vegan essentials are more

mainstream than you think and no one expects you to

have psyllium husk or guar in your store cupboard. Not

at this stage anyway…

A basic vegan meal needs the same key essentials

as a gourmet vegan meal – salt or umami, fat, and a

balance of acid and sweetness. Thankfully, this can

be achieved with natural, readily available store

cupboard basics, with a couple of slightly more exotic

essentials thrown in, but nothing that will break

the bank.

Nachos Now

You’ve finished that essay with half an hour to spare

before that gig, sports game, or society social you’ve

been looking forward to. Smash out this speedy meal

with time for a shower!

Serves 1

Ingredients

200 g can baked beans

100 g plain tortilla chips

20 g grated vegan cheese (optional)

1 tomato

½ tsp olive oil

¼ red onion

¼ tsp paprika

Squeeze of lemon

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp vegan plain yoghurt

Method

Empty the beans into a saucepan and place on a low heat

on the hob. Don’t let the beans boil.

While they are heating, place the tortilla chips on an

oven tray and sprinkle over the grated cheese. Skip this

step if you’re not using the cheese.

Finely dice your tomato and onion, place them into a

bowl with the olive oil, paprika and lemon and mix. Add

salt and pepper to taste.

Place your tortilla chips under a grill for a few minutes

to brown. Don’t let the chips burn. Take the beans

off the hob. Transfer the chips to a plate, pour the

beans over the top, and serve with the tomato mix and

the yoghurt.

Dive into this celebration of one of the world’s most sophisticated snack-sized

dishes: tapas. Spanish cuisine combines colour, culture and company, with tapas

bars across the globe a go-to for flavour and social snacking. Filled with trivia,

tips and recipes, this little book is the perfect gift for curious foodies and seasoned

connoisseurs alike.

Key Selling Points:

• This is a new addition to Summersdale’s accessible Little Book of... series,

and is a celebration of Spanish cuisine and culture.

• Includes a brief history of tapas, the significance of sharing small plates and

an overview of the many different dishes, as well as trivia, top tips and recipes

to be tried at home.

Pimientos de Padrón

(Padron Peppers)

These small green peppers are ubiquitous as part of most

tapas offerings. Originally from Padrón, a province in

Galicia, northern Spain, they are normally fried in olive

oil until their skins blister and they soften and wilt before

being served with a good crunch of sea salt on top.

So far, so good. Right? The catch though, or the appeal,

depending on your perspective, is that with any good

batch of Padron peppers, while most peppers are mild

and sweet, about one in ten of any crop of these peppers

develops a spicy kick that packs quite the punch. It is this

little game of Russian roulette though that has led to their

popularity in the tapas arena. In any group of friends, there

will always be one who is seeking out the little firecracker,

and one who wants to avoid it at all costs, but both are

loving the sweet, charred pepper taste along the way.

One more factor that makes Padron peppers a very

welcome addition to a tapas spread is that the staples of

the menu will often tend to be potatoes, bread, tomatoes,

prawns and pork in various forms, with very little in the

way of freshness and greenery to cut through all the richer

tasty bites. As such, a little plate of Padron peppers, served

as above or sometimes even served raw, can be a very

welcome sight indeed.

Lamb Albondigas

Often translated as “little meatballs” and normally made

with minced beef or pork, these lamb meatballs are a twist

on the classic and likely originate from rural areas of Spain

where sheep are the predominant livestock.

Serves 4

Ingredients

400 g lamb mince

50 g breadcrumbs

1 garlic clove, peeled and grated

2 tsp sweet smoked paprika

1 egg, whisked

¾ tsp fine sea salt

400 g tinned tomatoes

1 tbsp sherry vinegar

Method

In a bowl, combine the lamb mince, breadcrumbs, grated

garlic, paprika, egg and salt. Mix well so that everything

is combined. With wet hands, shape the mix into about

20 medium-sized balls.

Add a tablespoon of oil to a large frying pan over

medium-high heat, then fry the meatballs, turning every

minute or so, until browned all over. Transfer the browned

meatballs to a plate and leave to one side, leaving the fat

behind in the pan as this is the secret to getting as much

flavour into your final dish as possible.

All that remains so to add the tinned tomatoes and

sherry vinegar to the pan, bring to the boil, add back in the

meatballs and leave to bubble for 12 minutes on a low heat

until the sauce thickens and the meatballs are completely

cooked through.

Allow to cool a little before serving as one of a few tapas,

or with rice or potatoes and some greens or salad as a

main meal.
