For this one, I wanted to do something in the style of my first piece for wind ensemble
(Like Our Fathers Before Us). The ideas came quite quickly for this one, and I finished it
in under a day. During the opening, please phrase the brass soli. It should flow, ebb,
and breathe. In the first few pages, the first trumpet should blend into the french horns
and not come to the front of the texture.
When the marimba enters, it should be very clock-like and consistent. Throughout the
piece trumpet 1 has some cue notes that, although less desirable, can be played if the
part goes too high.
The string bass and alto clarinet part are optional, and no great loss will occur if they
aren't covered. I've mostly stayed away from slurs in this work, but that doesn't mean
the entire piece should be "pointy". Please encourage legato from the players where
you see fit.
