Mayflower Club<br />

moving<br />

DUE TO unforeseen<br />

circumstances and with<br />

much regret we must<br />

inform you that after<br />

many happy years at the<br />

Community Centre we have<br />

moved both the Monday<br />

and Wednesday afternoon<br />

Mayflower Clubs from the<br />

Centre.<br />

We are determined to keep this<br />

invaluable project going in the<br />

village. After all, over the years it<br />

has provided a much needed and<br />

appreciated service and facility for<br />

our elderly, lonely and vulnerable<br />

residents. We are currently<br />

exploring a new “home” for the club<br />

and it has been heart-warming to<br />

receive offers of help and support<br />

from other venues in the village.<br />

One way or another we WILL keep<br />

it going. Our sincere thanks go<br />

to those local venues that will be<br />

hosting the club in the immediate<br />

future.<br />

from the Club<br />

ON 9TH AUGUST Steve<br />

Robinson came along to<br />

give us his renditions of<br />

funny poems and ditties to<br />

cheer us all up and make us<br />

laugh.<br />

On the 16th August, following a<br />

number of nasty falls experienced<br />

by members, we provided a Falls<br />

Awareness Session provided by<br />

material from Independent Age<br />

and an insight in to personal safety<br />

alarm systems.<br />

On the 23rd August we had a<br />

wonderful visit and afternoon tea<br />

at Little Markfield Farm. Brenda,<br />

her family and volunteers put on<br />

a wonderful afternoon tea for us<br />

in the barn. We then had a tour<br />

around the farm itself seeing the<br />

farm animals and especially their<br />

herd of Alpacas. The vintage cars,<br />

other vehicles and farm machinery<br />

and vehicles were amazing.<br />

More than well worth a visit to<br />

something special in the village.<br />

Just give Brenda call if you want<br />

to visit and perhaps even book an<br />

afternoon tea with her. During the<br />

visit we also had “farm yard” raffle<br />

and raised £60 towards cancer<br />

research. Many thanks go to<br />

Brenda and her “crew” for putting<br />

on a splendid occasion for us.<br />

We must also mention that during<br />

Pat celebrating her 90th<br />

birthday<br />

the tea we also celebrated Pat’s<br />

90th Birthday.<br />

Pat has been a long- standing<br />

member of the club and always<br />

enjoys joining in with all our<br />

activities no matter how hard the<br />

challenge!! Happy birthday from<br />

us all.<br />

On the 30th August we held our<br />

now annual Caribbean BBQ.<br />

Due to what now seems to be our<br />

customary heavy downpours of<br />

rain we had to cook the food in<br />

the trusty gas oven instead. Still, it<br />

worked out fine as members were<br />

treated to burgers, sausages, sweet<br />

potato mash followed by Jamaica<br />

Ginger cake with pineapple jam<br />

and fruit salad with condensed milk.<br />

It was all washed down with tropical<br />

fruit punch or plain tropical fruit<br />

juice. Despite being frightened<br />

to bits by an unexpected visit by<br />

Pirate Captain Ronnie Blackbeard<br />

and Cabin Boy Little Carol,<br />

members also had a laugh over<br />

some of my Pirate Jokes and a<br />

pirate picture quiz. Time flew by but<br />

we managed to pull in a Caribbean<br />

Coconut Shy competition with Bob<br />

winning the star prize of a coconut<br />

and a fresh pineapple.<br />

Despite all the changes we are still<br />

going ahead and planning events<br />

over the next few months including<br />

Harvest Festival, our annual<br />

Conkers Championship and<br />

Halloween Party.<br />

DESPITE the current<br />

circumstances, we will<br />

ensure that the Markfield<br />

Good Neighbours Scheme<br />

remains in place and ready<br />

to help and support those<br />

in need.<br />

Remember that it is still “OKAY<br />

TO ASK” if you need any help or<br />

support and our volunteers will do<br />

their level best to help. Just pick up<br />

the phone and give us a call.<br />
