CAMP TERRA
By J W Copp
JAKE AND HIS friends are due
to spend their first summer
at Camp Terra; a selfproclaimed
haven for teenagers
that encourages eager campers
to surrender their grip on
technology, in the hope that
they can ‘reconnect with
nature’.
However, it doesn’t take long
before what was meant to be a
summer of bonding soon turns into
a chilling mystery, as members of
the group start disappearing under
strange circumstances.
Despite the camp’s technologyfree
ethos, dozens of security
cameras watch their every move
as Jake and the others desperately
try to uncover the dark secrets
of Camp Terra. Will they be able to outsmart the suspicious
counsellors and menacing security guards, or are they in way over
their heads?
J W (Joe) Copp lives in Glenfield with his fiancée and their
mischievous cat. He is a British MBA graduate with experience
working in central government, banking and pharmaceuticals,
but has always harnessed a flair for creative projects. Alongside
writing, he has also produced music that has been played on
national radio and is a keen runner. Camp Terra is his first novel.
Joe explains: “Growing up, I was a huge fan of R.L. Stines’
Goosebumps series, and those chilling tales have always stuck
with me. It was those stories that inspired me to write my own spin
on a classic horror concept - an eerie summer camp where all is
not what it seems, and relatable characters are truly put to the test.
Stine always did an excellent job of writing in a way that appealed
to a range of audiences (right from childhood through to early
adolescence) and I truly hope that Camp Terra can follow in his
momentous footsteps, whilst introducing a modern audience to a
timeless genre.”
Joint bank or savings accounts can be a good
idea for those in long-term, trusting and stable
relationships but you should be aware of the
pitfalls before pooling your fi nancial resources.
• Understand the legal implications of a joint
account. In most cases, both parties are equally
liable for any debts or overdrafts incurred
on the account, regardless of who made the
transactions. If you are concerned about this,
you can have an account where both parties
must authorise the release of funds. However,
if you feel you need to do this, it might be a sign
you shouldn’t be joining forces.
• If it’s not practical to have two signatories for
every transaction, be aware that one person will
have the legal right to withdraw all the money.
• For current accounts, you’ll need to discuss
and agree upon how the account will be used,
who will deposit money, who will pay bills, and
what the spending limits are.
• Particularly if you are pooling day-to-day
spending, bear in mind that relationship
confl ict can arise if one party considers the
other is spending unnecessarily or paying a
higher price for goods than they should.
• If you are feeling pressured to open a
joint account, particularly if it’s early in the
relationship, ask for someone else’s opinion. It
might just be that you are apprehensive about
the step change in your commitment, but
equally, your reticence could have grounds.
• It’s essential to have a plan in place for what
happens to the joint funds if the relationship
ends or if one of the account holders falls ill.
Discuss and document this plan beforehand to
avoid potential confl icts in the future.
Who manages the money?
Whether you have a joint account for everything
or just for bills, it’s likely there’s one person in the
relationship who is better at money management.
They may have more of an aptitude for it or have
more time to keep an eye on things.
This suits many partnerships, and you aren’t
going to force a change just for the sake of it.
However, for the non-managing party, burying
their head in the sand and not knowing how
to access accounts is dangerous. If you lose
your partner or they become incapacitated, not
having access to your own money is going to
pile on the stress.
Create a factsheet detailing all your products:
savings, debts, insurance, bank accounts
and important fi nancial dates such as when
car insurance is due for renewal. If the nonmanaging
partner is IT literate then an online
shared fi le will be fi ne, but printing it out will be
easier for most. Of course, don’t put important
passwords on the same piece of paper.
In summary, having a joint account can be a
very convenient part of your daily life together,
provided you’ve discussed and planned
how to manage funds, both now and should
circumstances change.
Financial Arrangements
A survey of over 24,000 people on the
MoneySavingExpert website showed a
marked difference between the generations in
the adoption of shared funds.
“I did find it rather
“It’s not a reflection on you, sir,”
insisted the churchgoer. “Ralph
THE ENIGMATIC LLAMA:
UNVEILING NATURE’S
CURIOUS CREATURE
A Symbol of Perseverance
Native to the harsh terrain of
the Andes mountains in South
America, llamas have adapted
to thrive in some of the most
unforgiving environments
on Earth. Their remarkable
resilience and ability to endure
extreme conditions make them
a symbol of perseverance and
strength.
Their efficient digestive
system produces relatively
little methane compared to
other livestock, making them
an eco-friendly choice for
agricultural practices.
Known for their vigilant
nature, llamas have been used
for centuries as guardians
of herds, protecting livestock
from predators such as coyotes and wolves. Their fierce loyalty and quick
reflexes make them invaluable allies in the protection of other animals. In
many Andean cultures, llamas hold a sacred place in traditional practices
and beliefs.
From serving as pack animals for trade to being featured in colourful
festivals and ceremonies, llamas are deeply intertwined with the cultural
identity of the region. The soft, hypoallergenic wool of the llama is highly
prized for its warmth and durability. By shearing llamas for their wool, local
communities can create sustainable livelihoods while promoting the use of
natural, renewable resources.
An Eco-Friendly Companion
Unlike other pack animals, llamas have a gentle tread that minimises
damage to delicate ecosystems. As llamas are herded from one place
to another, they help our planet with their grazing patterns, which help
subdue invasive species and clear dead or overgrown brush that might
cause wildfires.
Grazing llamas also help carry and plant seeds that catch onto their woolly
coats as they pass by plants and flowers. Because they’re quite territorial,
llamas are surprisingly effective at defending their living space against
foxes or predators . Because they eat any available plants and drink less
water than horses or mules, they’re seen as both cheaper and better for
the planet when it comes to pack animals.
Conclusion
The llama is a true marvel of nature, embodying a unique blend of utility,
grace, and cultural significance. As we continue to explore the wonders
of the natural world, let us not overlook the humble llama and the many
lessons it has to offer us about resilience, stewardship, and harmony with
the environment.
St Peter’s Church News
MY DAUGHTER is in a dance show later this
summer. She’s been rehearsing for a while
now. I have no idea if she’s getting the
dance moves right, but she’s doing well at
learning the songs she’s dancing to: she’s singing them
over and over and over again! I wouldn’t mind but one
of them is the Steps line-dancing song, released in the
late 90s, my mid-20s, which I had carefully forgotten
all about but now is stuck in my head again. And it
seems I can still remember most of the words too.
It may be because I have one of those annoying birthdays
with a ‘0’ in it this year, but I seem to be getting lots of
nostalgia/sudden memories of things long gone. Memories are
strange things. Sometimes they hide – we don’t even know
they’re there until they are triggered by something and come
flooding back to our consciousness – like lyrics. Sometimes
they cling on, even when many other things go.
Apart from 90s line-dancing songs, the other thing which
I’ve noticed has been remembered this month is a familiar
prayer. I’ve visited a few people recently in end-of-life care,
some who have suffered from dementia and clear memory
loss. And I’ve noticed that they’ve held on, aware or not, to
the Lord’s Prayer. Something learned in childhood, for some of
them repeated weekly ever since, for others not used hardly
at all, yet still there – familiar and able to be voiced. For many
people it remains the only prayer they know by heart.
In May we join in
the international
prayer movement
‘Thy Kingdom Come’,
focussed on part of
this prayer. Maybe
it’s a good time to
refresh your memory
of this prayer which
has shaped our
understanding of our
relationship with God
through Jesus, and
to discover again the
depth of what God
longs to do in us, with us and through us in his world.
The project will create an eighteen-mile heritage line stretching from the
north of Leicester to the south of Nottingham, centred on Loughborough.
General Manager of the Great Central Railway Malcolm Holmes said, “We’ll
be submitting our planning application in a matter of weeks, so we want
to tell people about our plans. The new image shows a train running on
the proposed viaduct. Originally we had expected to build an embankment
around 300 metres long but the space we have available would have made
that quite complex. Our new plan needs 100 metres of embankment,
then 200 metres of viaduct. It should be slightly cheaper and simpler to
construct.”
This section of railway will also include two steel bridge spans, one to
carry the railway across a culvert, the other to take it over Railway Terrace
road in Loughborough. The full designs will be included in the planning
application along with the necessary reports.
Malcolm continued, “After we have submitted our planning application
we’ll need to spend around half a million pounds taking the design
documents and turning them into construction and engineering blueprints.
Those documents are essential - as is planning consent - before we can
build again. While we have £2m already raised for the project, we want to
protect as much of that fund as possible for actual building work. Our new
appeal for half a million pounds is to fund the vital next steps and get this
epic project ‘shovel ready.’ The more money we raise, the sooner we can
build again and the more we can achieve.”
Donations can be made online at gcrailway.co.uk/unify or via
post with a cheque made payable to ‘David Clarke Railway Trust’
marked ‘Reunification’ on the back. Cheques can be sent to Lovatt
House, 3 Wharncliffe Road, Loughborough, Leics LE11 1SL.
Originally opened in 1899, the Great Central was a fast Victorian Main Line
to London. It was closed in the 1960s by British Railways. Two sections
have survived but five hundred metres of track between them was also
removed.
Restoring the missing section has been underway since 2017. One new
bridge has been built, one replaced and a third completely refurbished.
Supported by local, national and international well wishers, millions of
pounds have been raised to fund the work.
The Great Central has also confirmed the two bridge decks secured for the
scheme in 2012 are no longer needed.
“The bridge decks were kindly donated by Network Rail when they
were removed from Reading station. They were absolutely instrumental
in getting the whole Reunification project started,” concluded Malcolm.
“However with our design changes they would require expensive
modification to fit with our plans so with regret we have decided they will
be disposed of in due course. Instead the two steel bridge spans required
for the Reunification line are more than likely to be brand new structures.”
What is AUDIBLE?
AUDIBLE is an Amazon service offering a huge variety
and number of titles, all wrapped up in an affordable
subscription package.
It’s great for those who are struggling
to find time to read, or for those on
the lookout for a new podcast to get
stuck into. Books are either read out to
you by a narrator, the title’s author or
a well-known celebrity, while podcasts
often have famous hosts.
How much does Audible cost in the UK?
The cost for an Audible membership depends on the plan you sign up
for. Plans range from £7.99 per month to £109.99 per year. Paying £7.99
a month, you’ll receive one book credit per month whereas the top yearly
membership at £109.99 sees you receive 24 book credits for the year.
By signing up to Audible on the standard membership, you receive one
new audiobook every month you are a member. You can choose from a
range of membership plans and which one you have will determine how
many Audible ‘credits’ you receive each month, which can be exchanged
for audiobooks on the service.
You’re not limited to one book a month, though, many are available for
free and you can buy more. Also, you can listen to all the Audible Original
Podcasts with unlimited streaming and there are also a number of exclusive
offers and deals throughout the month, including the ‘Daily Deals’ which
offer a different title for up to 80% off each day.
Audible credits are the service’s internal currency, with one credit
purchasing one audiobook: nice and simple. But different memberships
afford different credits, so while the standard £7.99 per month subscription
grants you one token a month, the £14.99 subscription gets you two,
the 12-credit annual membership is £69.99 per year, and the 24-credit
membership will set you back £109.99 each year.
You can access Audible via your internet browser. However, it’s easier to
install the app on your device of choice; Audible is compatible with nearly
every single phone and tablet out there. One thing you’ll need to make
sure is that you have an Amazon account.
THE GARDENING year seems to be rushing by but the
weather isn’t quite keeping up. To say it has been a damp
spring, would be a gross understatement. It’s been well
and truly soggy!
Practical gardening may have stalled
but we can still make plans. It was
great to welcome Melanie Arnold
to our April meeting as she brought
inspiration by the bucket loads. Melanie
is a British cut flower grower and grows
her delightful blooms at Cornerfield Farm
in Leicestershire. She spoke about the
challenges of setting up her business and
how to successfully grow flowers for a
business while battling our tricky weather.
She was very entertaining and we all
picked up tips on how to get more out of
the flowers in our gardens. She suggested
starting off annual flowers much earlier
than we all expected to get a better show.
OUR ANNUAL SHOW is fast
approaching and the schedules
will be out soon so you can get
creating and selecting which
plants would be best to exhibit.
Some more categories for you to think
about are in baking, Rhubarb and Sultana
cake and Lemon Drizzle cake and in
crafts, a memory box or a ‘picture using
alternative materials’. We would also love
to see some potted ferns and fuchsias.
If anyone would like more information
about the show or would like to help out
either before or at the event then please
do get in touch. The show schedule with a full list of categories will be
available shortly in the library and Park House.
OUR SPEAKER next month is Chris Ensell from Glenfield
who will be introducing us to his world of tropical exotic
plants and how he has achieved this in his newly created
Leicestershire garden.
All are welcome to come along to our meetings. You don’t have to be a
member. We meet at 7.30pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month in St
Peter’s Church Hall. Yearly membership is just £18 or you can come for the
evening for £3, an absolute gardening bargain and there is always tea and
biscuits. Check out our facebook page for more details: www.facebook.
Boost Garden Butterfly Numbers by
up to 93% with One Simple Step
A NEW six-year study
proves that leaving areas
of grass to grow long
in gardens can increase
butterfly numbers by up to
93%.
This the first scientific evidence
that wildlife-friendly gardening
practices, such as having long
grass and flowering ivy, boost the
numbers and types of butterflies,
particularly in urban areas and near
farmland
The research is great news for
gardeners and non-gardeners alike,
proving the free and easy action of
letting an area go wild can make a
positive impact for butterflies
Letting parts of your garden grow
wild with long grass can increase
butterfly numbers by up to 93%
and attract a wider range of
species, according to new research
from leading wildlife charity
Butterfly Conservation.
The study, published in the
journal Science of the Total
Environment, provides the first
scientific evidence that having long
grass in your garden increases
butterfly abundance and diversity.
Creating such wild spaces may
help to reverse the decline of these
beautiful insects.
Undertaken by Butterfly
Conservation scientists Dr Lisbeth
Hordley and Dr Richard Fox,
the research analysed butterfly
sightings from more than 600
gardens across the UK, collected
by members of the public over six
years through the charity’s Garden
Butterfly Survey. The results show
that gardens with long grass had
a significantly higher number of
butterflies recorded, with a greater
variety of species, than those
without.
Importantly, the biggest benefits
of these wild spaces were found in
urban areas and intensively farmed
landscapes. In highly arable areas,
gardens with long grass saw up to
93% more butterflies, and those
in urban areas showed an increase
of 18%.
The potential to provide wild
spaces for butterflies and moths
to thrive is huge. Gardens make
up more than 728,000 hectares in
Great Britain - the equivalent of
over a million football pitches. If
each of these gardens had a space
that was allowed to go a little
wild, with grass growing long, it
would make a huge difference for
butterflies and moths, providing
spaces for them to feed, breed and
shelter.
While the research specifically
studied gardens, the benefits
to butterflies of long grass and
wild spaces are likely to extend
beyond the garden gate. Public
green spaces such as parks, school
grounds, allotments, and road
verges, could also provide vital
spaces for wildlife, and enable
more people to see more butterflies
if allowed to go a little wild.
Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science
at Butterfly Conservation and coauthor
of the study, said: “Nature
is in crisis; 80% of butterflies have
declined since the 1970s, so we
need to take action now to protect
them. We wanted to be able to
give tried and tested gardening
advice that will benefit butterflies
as we know lots of people want
to help. This study proves, for the
first time, that allowing a patch of
grass to grow long will attract more
butterflies into your garden.”
The study also found that the
presence of flowering ivy in
gardens increased the number
of certain butterfly species, such
as the Holly Blue, Red Admiral
and Comma, which use ivy as a
breeding habitat or nectar source.
Butterfly Conservation is calling
for everyone to create their own
Wild Space, no matter how big or
small, to help butterflies survive
and thrive. Through its Wild Spaces
programme, the charity aims to
transform 100,000 areas across
the UK to help support butterfly
populations.
Dr Fox added: “The simple act of
creating wild spaces by allowing a
patch of grass to grow long, or a
border edge to go wild is free and
easy to do, and can significantly
boost butterfly numbers, especially
in urban and agricultural settings
where they are most under
pressure. The benefits of each
individual wild space are small, but
if thousands of people get involved
the boost to butterflies could be
huge.
“Whether you have a large
garden, a small patch of grass, a
community or school space, or a
balcony or window box, anyone,
anywhere can help. We hope that
our Wild Spaces programme will
inspire people across the UK to
take action and help to create
a national network of butterflyfriendly
habitats.”
Wild Spaces can be created by
anyone, anywhere – from gardens
to shared community spaces,
balconies, terraces, or patios. No
matter the size or location, every
Wild Space can contribute to the
recovery of butterfly populations
and support biodiversity.
eScooters on footpaths
“POWERED
TRANSPORTERS” is a
term used to cover a
variety of novel and
emerging personal
transport devices
which are powered
by a motor, including
e-scooters.
Given how e-scooters
are motorised and
designed, they fall within the legal definition of a “motor
vehicle”. Therefore, the laws that apply to motor vehicles apply
to ‘e-scooters’.
It is illegal to use an e-scooter:
• in spaces that are set aside for use by
pedestrians, cyclists, and horse-riders; this
includes on the pavement and in cycle lanes
Any person who uses a powered transporter on a public road
or other prohibited space in breach of the law is committing a
criminal offence and can be prosecuted.
Please ensure that your eScooter is NOT ridden on the
pavement!
Former Western Park Golf Course:
Biodiversity Net Gain
GLENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL has commissioned a
Biodiversity Baseline Assessment report for the part of the
former Western Park Golf Course within Glenfield to aid us
in the fight against development on this site.
From February 2024 Biodiversity Net
Gain Surveys are a mandatory part of the
development of all large residential and
non-residential development schemes,
with only the smallest development sites
exempt from the new regulations.
A Biodiversity Net Gain Survey, provides
a detailed ecological assessment of the
current habitat within a development
site. A competent assessor measures
the size, condition, and distinctiveness of existing features like
ancient trees, woodlands, grasslands, ponds, and hedgerows.
They then use a metric which factors like habitat type, richness,
age, connectivity, and rarity on a geographic scale.
After proposals for the development are drawn up, ecologists
will reassess the projected habitat structure and biodiversity
post-construction. It measures the impact of the proposed
development on the site’s biodiversity. If the proposed
development plans fall short of a 10% uplift in biodiversity
units, further onsite habitat creation or offsite biodiversity
enhancement will be necessary before local authorities can
grant planning permission.
Developers must also submit a long-term maintenance plan
for preserving gains over at least 30 years. Regular ecological
monitoring and site inspections will check that enhancements
are cared for as agreed and that short-term habitat gains do
not lapse over time due to a lack of appropriate stewardship.
It is very much therefore in our interest to be forearmed
with an independent assessment to put before any planning
inspector.
THEYWORKFORYOU was founded twenty years ago to
make Parliament more accessible and accountable.
They believe that information about our elected representatives should be
easily understandable and accessible to everyone, and not just insiders or
those who can pay.
They now work across the UK’s Parliaments to bring information together
in one place, and make it accessible to both citizens and to civil society.
Through TheyWorkForYou and WriteToThem, they want to make
it easy to understand what the UK’s different layers of representation
do, and make the actions of our representatives and governments more
transparent.
They do this by:
• Making parliamentary debates searchable for all Parliaments.
• Making it easy for people to write to their representatives at any
layer of government.
• Powering email alerts that let citizens and civil society stay informed
about their representatives or areas of interest.
• Adding new information and summaries that build on the information
that Parliament releases (such as voting record summaries and more
accessible registers of members interests).
77% of homebuyers want gazumping
banned, though 46% would consider doing it
A NEW SURVEY of more
than 1,100 homeowners
in England and Wales has
revealed the prevalence
of gazumping, and their
attitudes towards it:
• 38% have been gazumped
by a rival bidder while buying
a property in the last decade
• 78% are in favour of the
government introducing laws
to ban gazumping
• However, 46% would
consider gazumping a rival
buyer in the future
More than three quarters
of homeowners believe that
gazumping should be banned in
England and Wales, new research
from Market Financial Solutions
(MFS) revealed.
The specialist lender
commissioned an independent
survey of 1,183 people who have
bought a property in England
and Wales since 2014. It found
that 38% were gazumped by a
rival bidder while trying to buy a
property in the last decade – an
increase of 7% since MFS last ran
this survey in Q2 2022.
Four fifths (78%) of respondents
are in favour of the government
introducing laws to ban the practice
of gazumping in England and
Wales, as the Scottish government
has done.
However, almost one in three
(29%) homebuyers admitted to
gazumping a rival buyer by coming
in with a higher bid on a property
for which another offer has already
been accepted, and half (46%)
would consider doing so in the
future if it meant getting the
property they wanted.
MFS’s research also found
that three quarters (73%) of
people believe gazumping and
gazundering tactics have become
more common place in recent
years due to high demand and
limited supply. A further 67% say
that the property market is too
competitive.
In addition, the survey revealed
that 26% of homebuyers have
gazundered a seller by lowering
their offer late in the process.
Paresh Raja, CEO of MFS, said:
“For all the challenges that both
buyers and sellers have faced in
recent years, there’s no escaping
the fact that the property market
remains incredibly competitive. Our
research underlines one of the byproducts
of this, with buyers often
having to resort to questionable
tactics like gazumping to secure the
property they want.
“As the government’s Levelling
Up Committee launches an inquiry
into improving homebuying and
selling in England, it’s important
they take heed of this data. Not
only is gazumping becoming
more prevalent, but there is huge
demand for laws to be changed to
tackle the issue.
“Clearly, the underlying, persistent
imbalance between supply and
demand is a key factor in this
problem. It’s more important than
ever, therefore, that lenders and
brokers work together to provide
the tailored financial solutions that
homebuyers need to navigate the
challenges of today’s market, with
speed remaining a vital quality
among lenders – this closes the
window of opportunity for a buyer
to be gazumped.”
I just realized my countertop is made of marble. I have been taking it for granite all these years.

Sciatica explained
According to the NHS, around nine
million adults in England live with back
pain and, of these, it’s estimated that one
in 20 people will be affected by sciatica
at some point in their lives.
While a sciatica flare-up usually gets
better within four to six weeks – it can
go as quickly as it arrived – it can
sometimes last longer. So, what exactly
is this problem, what causes it, what can
you do to help relieve symptoms and can
you reduce the chances of it returning?
Diagnosis
A burning, stinging, electric-like shock
runs from your lower back all the way
down your leg. This pain is undeniably
sciatica, a term used to describe irritation,
inflammation, or compression of the
sciatic nerve. It is often confused with
general back pain, but sciatica isn’t limited
to the back area.
Other symptoms can include numbness,
weakness, and pins and needles in the
feet, toes, or legs. Pain and discomfort
can range from mild to severe, and
symptoms are often aggravated by
sneezing, coughing, or sitting for long
periods.
Why me?
Sciatica can happen for no particular
reason. It isn’t a condition in itself. Instead,
it’s a symptom of various other conditions
that can affect the sciatic nerve:
• Age-related changes in the spine
and natural age-related degeneration
of bones, nerves and muscles can
increase the risk of inflammation.
• Sitting for long periods or having a
sedentary lifestyle.
• Being overweight places stress on the
spine, which can lead to spinal.
• A slipped disc.
Treatments and self-help
Your GP will likely suggest exercises and stretches for
you to do at home. They may also suggest painkillers,
like ibuprofen and aspirin. In some cases, your GP
might also refer you for physiotherapy. This is free
under the NHS, but you may well find there is a waiting
list. However, if your symptoms don’t improve, are
getting worse, or prevent you from doing everyday
activities, ask for a further consultation.
Staying active
Gentle, low-forms of exercise, such as swimming
and walking, are advised by the NHS. Exercises to
increase core strength, improve hip and spine mobility
or maintain flexibility in the lower body can help. Other
movements, such as any that stretch the hamstrings,
are best avoided. For further guidance, seek advice
from your GP or check out the NHS online for
information on exercises for sciatica at
www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/exercises-sciatica-problems/
The sciatic nerve explained
The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve
in the human body, running from the lower back,
through the buttocks, down the leg, and ending just
below the knee. It then branches into other nerves
which continue down to the toes. It controls several
muscles in the lower legs and is responsible for
supplying sensations to the skin of the foot and most
of the lower leg.
LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS owners are
invited to a FREE networking event
at the Mattioli Woods Skylounge in
Leicester on Thursday 16 May 2024.
The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity is holding a
free networking event for its existing and potential
new business loan borrowers in the Skylounge at
Mattioli Woods, 1 New Walk, LE1 6RU on Thursday
16th May between 5.30-7.30pm.
With the Charity’s ambassadors, borrowers,
trustees, supporters and the wider Leicester
business community invited, the networking event
will provide the perfect opportunity for current and future borrowers to peer network, meet experts and find out
more about the application process for STWLC’s interest-free business loans.
Advisors will be clearly identified on the day by the event hosts, Lucy Womack (Chair of STWLC) and Barrie
Stephen (Patron of STWLC). The event is free to attend and will run for approximately two hours.
Lucy Womack said: “We’ve organised this event to provide an opportunity for new business owners to ask
questions and find out about the best way to start and expand their journey, surrounded by experts and people
who have been through the process before.
“This is a fantastic networking opportunity for our borrowers, but much more than that it’s a great way to bring
the STWLC family together – welcoming familiar and new faces while connecting the wonderful community that
exists around the Charity.
“The Leicester and Leicestershire business community is vibrant and co-operative, which makes it a great place
for people to launch their ideas. We hope to create an opportunity for people to ask questions and find answers,
and for a whole series of useful and exciting new links to be made.”
To register your place at this event, please visit www.stwcharity.co.uk
Established in 1542, STWLC hosts quarterly application windows each year in which people aged over 18 and
under 45 can apply for unique interest-free loans of up to £20,000 to aid local businesses, or £10,000 to support
students wishing to return to postgraduate education. The Charity’s loans are interest-free for nine years, and
become repayable by equal instalments after three years.
How to make Countdown
even better
COUNTDOWN is one of my favourite TV game shows, and
I watch it every
day - usually on
catch up.
I think it’s great
- particularly since
Colin Murray took
over the hosting.
But I have a bee in
my bonnet about one
aspect of the letters
round.
Sometimes, towards
the end of the
game, one of the
contestants might
be 15 points behind
their opponent and
the only way they
are likely to close the
gap is to spot a nine-letter word in the selection. (Nine letter words score
double points i.e. 18)
But then - disaster strikes - and during the letter selection process they
happen to pick aletter ‘Q’, but no letter ‘U’ to go with it.
So - there is no way to achieve their goal of a nine-letter word.
I think this is unfair, so I suggest the following rule change.
If the player’s selection of nine letters includes a letter ‘Q’, but no ‘U’,
then the player choosing the letters has the option to discard the letter
‘Q’ and request a new random letter.
Obviously, if you are leading by 15-18 points, it is advantageous to leave
the ‘Q’ in the selection as it prevents your opponent spotting a nine-letter
word.
But if you are trailing by 15-18 points, then it’s better to discard the
‘Q’ as the new letter may help you to form the nine-letter word that you
need to catch up.
I think this change would help to keep the game alive for longer, even if
one player builds up a good lead.
It would also introduce another tactical element to the game, because
depending upon who is in the lead, and who is picking the letters, the ‘Q’
may or may not be discarded.
BRADGATE ROTARY CLUB
YOU MAY well ask what is Rotary?
The organisation’s mission statement is to “provide service to others,
promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace
through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders”.
Whilst that is still true, it was written in1905, times have moved on
considerably and while the ethos still stands its interpretation has moved
with the times. Originally a male only organisation with its female support
club, Inner Wheel, Rotary is now open to both genders.
Some older established clubs still have the traditional set up but we in
Bradgate Rotary think differently. We ...
• Are a secular mixed gender club with around a 60/40 split in favour of
female.
• Are informal and are more like a group of friends than a club that meet
for breakfast weekly
• Have no egos and play to individual members strengths
• Have a common interest in helping our local community whether by
supporting a charity financially, painting a fence or providing advice and
help
• Enjoy and have fun in whatever we do
• Put a smile on faces of all ages
Bradgate Rotary’s catchment area covers Glenfield, Groby, Ratby,
Markfield, Newtown
Linford and Anstey.
We would welcome you
with open arms should
you want to be part of
Bradgate Rotary. It may
well be that you just
wish to volunteer with
us on an ad hoc basis
or join a group of likeminded
people who like
to make a difference to
others. That choice is
yours. I nearly forgot
our motto
Service above Self
Local caring superstars
LOCAL HOME care company,
care professionals
taking home two awards
at The Care Awards East
Midlands held at the East
Midlands Care Conference and
hosted by Health Innovation
East Midlands on Wednesday,
6th March.
The Care Awards East Midlands
recognize individuals who have made
a difference in the lives of their home
care residents, service users, families
of those receiving care, and care staff.
Two caring superstars were awarded
for their work at Home Instead West
Leicestershire and Market Bosworth.
Shilpa Jobanputra won the award
for ‘Home Care Carer of the Year’
after demonstrating her dedication
and commitment to providing care
to her clients. She is now taking the
next steps in career development,
progressing into her next role,
Community Liaison.
Shilpa builds an irreplaceable bond
with her clients. One story that
particularly stood out is when she
supported one of her clients with her
nutrition. Shilpa realized that the lady
wasn’t eating and had little interest in
food, so she started to get her involved
in cutting her sandwiches into star
shapes and making her food look fun
and appealing. This meant the lady felt
more independent while improving her
nutrition. Shilpa also assists the running
of Home Instead West Leicestershire’s
community lunch clubs, bringing
together clients as well as anyone else
in the community who wishes to make
friends.
Bethany Hart, Deputy Care Manager
at Home Instead West Leicestershire,
and Market Bosworth received the
‘Highly Commended’ award. Judges
were bowled over by her outstanding
mentorship. Beth is seen by many
of her colleagues as a supportive and
inspiring peer. From being deeply compassionate and understanding of
her colleagues’ anxieties and emotions to inspiring her team to strive for
perfection and mentor them into leaders themselves.
Led by Nisha Chandarana, who is also the owner of Home Instead
West Leicestershire and Market Bosworth, Nisha was thrilled to have two
members of her staff achieve such accolades, commenting: “To have not
one, but two members of my team win an award in The Care Awards East
Midlands is a huge achievement, one that I’m extremely proud of.” Nisha
continued: “Both Beth and Shilpa deserved to win their awards as they
continue to thrive here at Home Instead West Leicestershire.
“They are great team players and care deeply about continuously striving
to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our clients.”
Glenfield WI April Meeting
THE APRIL meeting was rather different to our usual
gathering, as we held a fund-raising event to which
members from other local WI’s were invited.
St Peter’s Church Room was quite full with ladies who welcomed
the chance to meet up with those from different Institutes for an
afternoon of entertainment, chat and of course, tea and cake! Our
speaker was Graham Sutherland who gave an interesting talk
on wicked women, fact and fiction. Attitudes towards such women
vary of course as time passes. Consider the Suffragettes who were
thought, at the time, to be very wicked in their stance for equality.
Now they are considered to be trail blazing heroines!
There followed our social time with refreshments during which
the raffle was drawn and prizes collected. The secondhand book
and jigsaw table was also a popular attraction. As the afternoon
drew to a close, there seemed to be general agreement that the
event had been most enjoyable and a complete change to the
usual meetings.
THE MAY MEETING will be an opportunity for a final discussion
and vote on which resolution will be considered at the AGM in
London in June. Our speaker will be Paul Taberner who will
be telling us about The Real CSI. Definitely a must for anyone
who enjoys crime shows on TV! So come along and join us at St
Peter’s Church Rooms on Wednesday May 8th at 2pm. You will be
very welcome!
MAY 2024 GLENFIELD GAZETTE
SINCE THE BIRTH of the
railway there have been
places where people and
/or vehicles have needed
to cross the railway line
to access the other side
of the line. Over the
years like other parts
of the system railway
crossings have evolved.
There are different types of
crossings. The basic is a pedestrian
where there is a hand gate on
each side of the line. If there is a
good view of approaching trains
people hoping to cross can look
and listen to see if it is safe to
cross. If there is restricted view or
crossing will take time e.g. with
a wheelchair. There is a phone to
the Signalman who will tell when it
is safe to cross. I had an occasion
where a lady wanted to cross
with a horse. Having got off the
horse she rang the signal box from
observing the Signalling Panel I
saw that a High Speed Train was
approaching the crossing. As I
answered the call I heard the noise
of the train passing this shocked
the poor horse. “Stand Still!” the
woman screamed down the phone.
“I AM standing still!” I replied.
“I was talking to the
horse idiot!” she replied.
Lost for words I told her she was
now safe to cross and to let me
know when she was clear- which
she did and the Midland Main Line
was back to normal again.
Next there are the crossings that
allow vehicles to cross it is the
same as before with larger gates
either side of the line. With extra
time needed to cross it is necessary
to ring the Signalman. Some of
these crossings are on farmer’s
land and often there is a need to
cross the line to get from one field
to another. They can also be for
access to a site on a line that does
not have a lot of railway traffic.
I had a farmer ring one day to
cross. However I knew there was
a train in the area so I asked if he
had seen a train go by. He said
he had, so I told him if he had
seen a train pass, he was safe
to cross. After I had finished the
call the train showed as being
closer than I had realised. Thank
goodness the train passed ok.
The farmer called safe on the
other side not happy at the near
miss. I said “What did I ask you?”
“If a train had passed,” he said
“And one hadn’t had
it!” I was not happy!
“It had” he replied
“When ?” I asked He said that one
had gone by when he was in the
lower field. When I asked how
long ago he said some time ago!
I told him had not meant that - I
had meant within 60 seconds! I
learnt a lesson that day never to
RAILWAY LEVEL
CROSSINGS
rely on what is said, as both parties
may not be on the same sheet!
Sometimes in the school holidays
the farmer’s children will be with
their Dad and might ring to cross
over. So it is not strange to hear
a child’s voice. This day I get this
call. “Can we cross the line?” I ask
what with and I get the answer
500 sheep! I think this is not real,
however I go along with it asking
how long they want to cross -
and are the sheep in a lorry? He
answers “No - they are walking
them across!” Now I know it is
not real. However as there are no
trains I tell them to let me know
when they are clear, not expecting
to hear again. I do however get a
call to say they are clear. Still not
believing it, I say I cannot hear
the sheep so his mate on the other
phone starts making bleeping
noises and the pretending to be the
sheep dog. I say very good now
p... off. Which they did!
Where the railway crosses a road
in the past there was a crossing
keeper who was there to open the
gates for traffic or, on a road with a
lot of traffic, they might have gates
open for vehicles and only closed
for trains to pass. Sometimes these
were controlled from a Signal
Box where the rail traffic was
considerable. I worked a Signal
box that had a level crossing with
the old wooden gates. There were
times when sometimes I stopped
the wrong traffic. A car came
racing down the road at excessive
speed as I was closing the gates. I
stopped closing the gates as it did
not look like it was going to stop.
I called after him for being so silly.
I had finished closing the gates
and clearing the signals when a
car came racing down the wrong
side of road with lights flashing
and screeched to a halt and a
Policeman got from the car and
threw his cap on the road in anger!
As soon as the train had gone I
opened the gates and at a more
sedate speed the police car moved
off down the road.
Another occasion was a more
happier one. It was a great day
for the wedding at the top of the
road. After the wedding a car
stops at the crossing and a well
dressed man comes to the door.
He wants me to close the gates
to stop his mates following them
to the honeymoon hotel. So this
I do and stop the car with the so
called mates in it. An aftermath to
this is a year later the same man,
his wife and their new baby come
over the crossing tooting at me and
giving me a wave. It goes to show
closing the gates really does work
wonders!
Over the years Barriers have
replaced the old wooden gates.
On the lesser roads half-barrier
crossings have been installed and
if motorists obey the lights are
safe. There has been known for
motorists to beat the lights and go
over the wrong side to get through
before the train goes by. However
there is only 27 seconds from the
yellow light followed by the red
flashing lights before the train
passes at speed. There is a lay by
before the crossing for large or
slow vehicles to stop and ring the
Signalman. Once the line is clear
the Signalman will keep signals at
red till the crossing is reported
clear. These Barriers are fail safe
so if anything fails the barriers will
go down and lights flash. This is
annoying for the Signalman as he
gets many calls from traffic held
at the crossing. All that he can tell
them is help is on the way and to
either wait or find an alternative
way. It is illegal to pass a red light!
I had one occasion when a big
lorry stopped at a failed crossing
ringing to say he cannot get his
lorry past the barriers. I told him
he was not allowed to go by the
red lights anyway, he replies that
the cars in front of him had gone,
bypassing the barriers. Well I
thought that will stop them now
he was there. A little while later I
get a call from a motorist asking
if it is safe for him to cross. I tell
him no - that is why that lorry is
there. To my amazement he says
the lorry has gone by reversing
back down the railway line to get
across and it was a good job no
train came! Sometimes if there is
work to be done on the barriers -
or on the track - which will affect
the operation of the crossing,
they have to be on local control
at site. I have been stationed at
one of these crossings over a long
weekend of engineering work. It
was late evening and dark so I
had two red lights on the approach
to crossing in the middle of each
line in case a train came before
I got the barriers down. I was
sitting in the cabin provided and I
went to check the lights they had
disappeared!
While I was looking for the lights,
thinking may be kids had moved
them, a man walking his dog came
over the crossing. I asked him if
he had seen any children nearby.
When he asked why I told him and
he said he had moved the lamps
to behind my cabin because if a
train had come it would have had
to stop! I told him that was what
the lamps were for! He was sorry
he did not know! I thought after
he had gone when he moved the
lamps he was actually trespassing.
Today most railway crossings on
major roads have barriers covering
the whole road and are either
worked from the nearby Signal Box
or by CCTV maybe from a Control
Centre which can be many miles
away.
The other day a woman described me as a bit of a looker. Well, voyeur was the actual word that she used.

GLENFIELD GAZETTE MAY 2024
Every
year, I
announce that
I’m going to take
up jogging, but
then I don’t. It’s a
running joke.
Apparently,
it’s rude to poke
someone in the
forehead and say
“Skip Intro” when
they start talking
to you.
I can cut a
piece of wood
in half just by
looking at it. I saw
it with my own
eyes.
Yesterday, I
accidentally sent
a naked picture of
myself to everyone in my
address book. Not only
was it embarrassing but
it cost a fortune in
stamps.
I went on
a once-in-alifetime
holiday.
Never again.
I like to
shower like
Frank Sinatra
did, and so I
face the vinyl
curtain.
Did you hear
they arrested
BBC removes Laura Kuenssberg episode from
iPlayer following complaint by Toby Young
THE BBC has removed a recent episode of Sunday
With Laura Kuenssberg from iPlayer following
Toby Young’s complaint to the BBC about Chris
Packham’s false and defamatory claim that the
Daily Sceptic is “put together by a bunch of
professionals with close affiliations to the fossil
fuel industry”.
It has also deleted the tweet posted by BBC Politics containing
a clip in which he said this, which was re-tweeted by
Kuenssberg.
In a statement, the BBC said: “We received complaints from
people unhappy Laura didn’t challenge a comment made by
panel member Chris Packham regarding the Daily Sceptic.
“During a discussion with the panel about various issues including climate change,
broadcaster and conservationist Chris Packham claimed that the Daily Sceptic, whose editorin-chief
is Toby Young, is ‘basically put together by a bunch of professionals with close
affiliations to the fossil fuel industry’.
“We acknowledge we would ideally have asked him to present his evidence on this, but in
a fast-moving live programme it’s not always possible to pick up on every point made by our
guests.
“We’ve removed any posts on X with this part of the discussion.”
The BBC has also removed the programme from iPlayer.
Packham had been discussing climate change and arguing that recent floods in Dubai, plus
high temperatures in the global south and wildfires, were a result of carbon emissions.
Writing about the discussion in the Spectator, Toby Young said: “And to think the BBC
launched a multi-million-pound department last year [BBC Verify] to ‘address the growing
threat of disinformation’.”
Morrisons installs AI cameras to
boost availability and staff efficiency
27
AS REPORTED IN RETAIL GAZETTE,
Morrisons is set to install thousands
of AI-powered cameras across its UK
stores by the end of the year, after
trials found they boosted availability
and increased staff efficiency.
The grocer has become the first UK retailer to
integrate US technology, teaming up with Seattlebased
AI company Focal Systems.
Chief executive Rami Baitiéh has focused on
improving patchy availability as a key priority for his turnaround at the retailer, with the
cameras able to provide real-time on-shelf data and automatically direct staff to where stocks
are running low, The Grocer reports.
The title understands Morrisons has seen significant rises in availability scores in stores
where the technology has been tested, suggesting that it could free up staff to prioritise
customer service, which is another crucial focus for Baitiéh.
Last month the supermarket reported its strongest like-for-like sales growth in three years
during its trading update for the first quarter.
It saw like-for-like sales, excluding fuel, soar 4.6% from a 0.1% rise the year before. Total
sales excluding fuel were up by 3.9% to £3.9bn.
How to copy anything that’s on your pc
computer screen
DID YOU KNOW that you can create an image of anything that appears on your
computer screen by pressing the SHIFT key, the WINDOWS key and the S key at
the same time?
The screen will go a bit dim. Then if you drag the cursor (whilst pressing the mouse
button) you can copy any or all of the screen to the Clipboard, and then paste it into a
program or document of your choice. Give it a try.
