Another year of achievements, remembrances, milestones and celebrations has
come and gone for us all. Regular readers will know that at Rutherford we enjoy
sharing some of these moments with you. This year, we were overjoyed to welcome
our first granddaughter.
We have continued to search the world to source rare pearls, gemstones and
jewellery that will help you mark your own personal special events. The best way
to keep up with our constantly expanding collection is to register on our website so
that you receive our regular emails. Alternatively, contact one of our staff members,
who will be glad to help you find that special, memorable piece.
Some of you may not be aware that we also create modern and bespoke jewellery in
our workrooms. On pages 19 and 21, you will glimpse the process with examples of
beautifully crafted jewellery and sketches alongside. These include carved gemstones
and some unusually cut diamonds – pieces that are timeless, unique and distinctive.
At Rutherford we cherish the beauty and history of purely natural diamonds.
The worldwide demand for pearls has grown significantly over the last 12 months. As
Melbourne’s first pearl specialist, we are known for our vast range and are confident
we have beautiful pieces to suit all tastes. Pearl jewellery is available at our city
pearl store and also our Camberwell store. We would particularly like to draw your
attention to the rare, large pearl pendants on page 41 and also the large, shaded
Tahitian strand on page 43.

Rose cut diamonds originated in the 1500s and are often seen in Georgian and
Victorian jewellery. They are recognisable for their flat backs and domed tops.
The triangular facets are inspired by the petals of a half-opened rose bud. Rose
cut diamonds sparkle under candlelight and when used in modern jewellery,
such as the pieces on this page, give a romantic, vintage look and feel.

In the late 16th century mosaic artists from Venice were brought to Rome
to teach their trade to local craftsmen. The Romans then magnificently and
painstakingly decorated the interior of St Peter’s Basilica.
In 1727, the Studio del Mosaico Vaticano (Vatican Mosaic Studio) was formally established.
This workshop housed many of the best micro mosaic artists and jewellers in Rome.
The striking brooch featured here is hallmarked with the papal mitre and crossed keys of the
Vatican. This hallmark represents high quality materials, workmanship, and design.
The Studio continues to operate today, both creating new works and restoring antiquities.
