Treloar School
and College:
A place of
possibilities
At Treloar’s, we support physically disabled
children and young adults (aged 4 to 25)
to achieve their aspirations and to live as
independently as possible.
With outstanding teaching, therapy,
nursing and independence training,
students can focus on learning; developing
their skills and understanding to achieve
their goals.
Dear Friend of
Treloar’s
Welcome to your Autumn edition of
Treloar’s Today.
All the students at Treloar’s have physical
disabilities and complex medical
needs but still have hopes, dreams and
aspirations, like other young people. One
of those students is Reuben. On page 3,
Reuben shares how Treloar’s changed
his life, giving him independence and the
possibility of achieving things he would
never have dreamed of.
But we rely on people like you to help
make it happen. As a charity, we must
raise £2 million each year to deliver lifechanging
support that helps students
reach their full potential.
“The best thing about
Treloar’s is the atmosphere
in which the students
can live, where they feel
they belong, can make
friends and can learn and
improve.” Parent of Treloar’s student
Reuben also joined us when we
welcomed our supporters to the Old
Bailey in June to officially launch our
new five-year strategy. Alongside
our commitment to excellence as a
school and college, we are committed
to making an impact on a wider
scale, sharing our expertise, to inform
government policy and public attitudes.
You can read more about how we’re
developing future living options for
adults on page 5.
To reiterate what we said to guests at
the Old Bailey event - without fundraising
and your support, we simply couldn’t
operate as a charity now and in the
future. That goes from switching the
lights on in the morning through to the
specialist services we provide that make
such a difference to our wonderful, full of
potential students like Reuben. Thank you
so much for all you do and for making
these things possible.
Best wishes
Meet Reuben,
musician, poet
and student
aiming high
Last year Reuben made a short film
about his life and how one conversation
led him to Treloar’s and a future full of
possibilities. Read his story and watch
his film on our YouTube channel https://
www.treloar.org.uk/TheStoryOfReuben
I’m 19 years old and have cerebral palsy
in both legs. My mum raised me and
taught me to enjoy life – she made sure
I got out and saw the world. I salute my
mum. She looked after me while putting
up with a lot of politics involved in having
a disability. Mum stood up for me when
nobody else could.
Whilst I was studying for GCSEs, my
mum died. I had no one else.
Some people get mopey, but some get
so angry. They can’t breathe. They can’t
think. This is what I did. There was so
much anger and rage from the pain of
it all.
Music and rapping helped me get the
anger out. I did rap battles with friends
and rapped to instrumentals on my
phone. I’d figure out what I wanted to
say with all these emotions I was feeling.
I was in a dark place, and it was nice just
to sit and write.
But I was lost. I wasn’t evolving. So I
talked to my local authority about
college. They told me about a place in
Hampshire that’s super inclusive
called Treloar’s.
“Treloar’s allowed
me to grow.”
I joined Treloar College and moved into
Campbell Court, Treloar’s community
of self-contained, independent living
flats. Now I can be an adult, and people
recognise I’m independent. With
Treloar’s, I have a safety net too.
Perceptions of me because of my
chair can make social interactions
difficult. And much of my old school
wasn’t accessible. But Treloar’s makes
everything even. I started making
connections and rapping more and
figuring everything out.
I joined a rock and pop music course.
Then I joined a band. And I write poems
too – I’m a published author!
Through Treloar’s, I have community and
socialisation. Being here has helped me
mentally because I’m able to be me.
Just because I’m disabled, I shouldn’t
have to be in a box.
Treloar’s helped me be free and a happy
soul. I know what I want to do now. And
I’ve just started a course at the University
of Creative Arts, something I never
thought possible before finding Treloar’s.
“I don’t feel alone. That’s
powerful in its own right.”

The sky is the
limit for King
We don’t let disabilities get in the way
of students’ dreams – as student King
discovered when he took control of an
aeroplane recently.
“When King told me he’d like to fly,
I made it my mission!”
says Charlotte Mills, Progress
and Transition Coordinator /
Internship Coordinator.
Staff and
supporters go
to new heights
for students
Seven dare-devil staff members and two
Treloar’s supporters took a leap of faith
for our students when they stepped out
of an aeroplane 13,000ft up!
Nerves and excitement pushed them to
the edge as they launched themselves
from the aircraft. After a breathtaking
freefall, colour broke through the clouds
as the parachutes opened and the
brave skydivers floated down to earth.
“I’ve had the best experience in my life!
I’m so glad I did the skydive and raised
funds for our students whilst enjoying
myself jumping off a plane!”
Zizan Rozman
Thanks to Charlotte’s determination,
Aerobility - the flying charity for
people with disabilities, and support
from Treloar’s Campbell Sports Fund
and people like you, King enjoyed an
experience of a lifetime.
King’s support team also included
Residential Team Leader Lamin Silameh
and Physiotherapy Assistant Peter Rose.
Their expertise and knowledge around
his care, medication and physiotherapy
needs meant King could fly safely
and comfortably.
As King took off, Treloar’s staff and
students gathered outside and waved
as he flew over the site. It was a
dream come true for King and a proud
moment for all involved in helping
make it a reality.
Together the skydivers raised over
£5,000 which will help give young
people at Treloar’s opportunities to
enjoy the best experiences in their lives
too. Don’t worry, fundraising for Treloar’s
doesn’t have to be high-octane – there
are plenty of ways to support us with
your feet firmly on the ground! From
playing our TRELOTTERY to holding a
cake sale or joining an event, you’ll
find inspiration on our website.
Nature and
nurture in the
new outdoor
classroom
Students can now enjoy therapeutic
outdoor activities, whatever the weather,
thanks to our new Outdoor Learning
Centre classroom. And it’s gone down a
storm with student Liam. He says, “It’s
pretty amazing. It’s great to look around,
and I like being in outdoor spaces.”
Grant award
helps open
doors
We’re committed to developing future
living options for disabled adults.
Treloar’s four accessible flats and two
carer studios at Rivermead Gardens
in Alton will allow young people with
complex needs to live independently in
the community. And thanks to a grant
from The Wolfson Foundation, fit-out will
begin shortly!
For students wanting to live away from
home, having Treloar’s specialist skills
and knowledge on their doorstep makes
it possible. The safe and supportive
Gardening activities allow students
to work on their hand skills and
build up strength. Liam’s specialist
Occupational Therapist Hannah
explains, “Engaging with something
living and green is good for students’
mental health and gives them a
sense of responsibility looking after
something living.”
A safe space for everyone
The classroom makes for the perfect
sanctuary too, with bi-fold windows
opening into the garden bringing
nature inside. Hoists mean students
can leave their wheelchairs and enjoy
relaxation or physiotherapy time.
It’s thanks to our supporters that we’re
able to make sure students like Liam
have opportunities to discover their
capabilities and grow their
knowledge outside the typical
classroom environment.
environment will allow young people
to discover their independence,
opening doors to future living
options. And with a town centre
location, they’ll have a world of new
experiences and work possibilities at
their feet.
We can’t wait to welcome young
people ready for their next chapter. If
you know of a young adult interested
in independent living with Treloar’s,
we’d love to hear from you.

Gold medals
and awards
galore for
Treloar’s!
All our students deserve a gold medal
for their can-do attitude in sports. And
in July, one pair bagged themselves the
real thing! Boccia players Sophie and
Harrison returned from the World Youth
Championships in Portugal with a little
extra baggage – a gold medal each -
after winning the BC4 Pairs competition.
Harrison says, “Competing internationally
for the first time has been brilliant – I’ve
loved every minute. I feel proud to be a
part of the gold medal-winning team,
knowing I’ve played well and supported
my teammates.”
And they’re not the only award-winning
team at Treloar’s. Our PE and Swim
Team has been awarded The National
School Sports Award recognising our
outstanding commitment to developing
the sporting skills of students
through first-class facilities and
coaching programmes.
Teamwork at its best
Freya Chart, Treloar’s PE and Swim
Teacher, says, “I’m honoured to receive
this award on behalf of our amazing
students, dedicated PE and Swim Team
and wider community who have bought
into the PE vision for School.
“In everything we do, we try to give
students the confidence to have a ‘can
do’ attitude and belief they can achieve
much through PE, sport and swimming.
We’re so proud of all our students, from
those accepted into the Boccia UK Talent
Transition Squad to those who enjoy
PE. They give everything a go and give
us ‘wow’ moments every day as they
develop their fundamental movement
skills or water confidence in the pool.”
“Treloar’s goes to extraordinary lengths
to ensure that the disabilities of its
pupils do not prevent participation in
a wide range of sports. By hosting an
annual Disability Sports competition,
mainstream school students can
see how adaptations can be made
to enable all to achieve in activities
that they share an equal love for.”
Commendation from
Education Business awards.
A Royal Garden Party to remember
Former student Hayley and mum Teresa, who both work
at Treloar’s, rubbed shoulders with royalty when they were
invited to the Coronation Garden Party at Buckingham
Palace. And it seems Hayley made quite an impression on our
Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Teresa says, “We were told to wear a hat and Hayley’s flew off!
The Duchess picked it up and helped Hayley put it back on.
She told Hayley she looked beautiful in her dress. The Duchess
spent more time with Hayley than with anyone else. We met
all the members of the royal family.”
“We felt very humbled and honoured to have been asked
and, of course, very excited.”
Could you be a winner for Treloar’s?
Fancy being in with a chance to win weekly cash
prizes while helping us give students the confidence
and skills to realise their full potential in life?
One lucky supporter did just that when they won
the recent TRELOTTERY rollover of £1,400!
Rollovers can reach up to £5,000 and there is also a
weekly top prize of £500. All for just £1 per entry per week.
