London’s older people ‘do
not feel valued’, report warns

JUST 13 per cent of Londoners
over the age of 60 believe the
capital is “a place where older
people are valued”, a new report
warns, writes London Democracy
Reporter, Noah Vickers.
Research published by Age
UK London has found that the
experience of older people in the
city varies significantly, with “stark
inequalities” visible.
Approached for a response
to the report, both the Mayor of
London and the Government
said they were working hard to
support the elderly.
Abi Wood, the charity’s CEO
said: “Older Londoners told us
that they really love London and
the communities to which they
belong, but they’re unconvinced
that the city values them.
“What really stood out from this
research is that inequalities have a
massive impact on how over-60s
feel about living in London on
every measure.
“Older people who are living
only on state pensions, in social
or private rented housing and
who are in poor health, experience
a vastly different London to
their peers. Action is needed to
make London work for all older
people.”
The report was published to
coincide with the United Nations
International Day of Older Persons
on October 1 and Silver Sunday, a
celebration of older people in the
UK on the same day.
It also found that geography
plays a key role in elderly residents’
enjoyment of life in the capital.
While 68 per cent of older
people living in inner London feel
positively about living in the city,
the same is true of just 52 per cent
of those living in outer London.
Across London, the average was
59 per cent, with just five per cent
feeling negative.
The affordability of living in
the capital and the provision of
healthcare were both found to be
of particular concern.
36 per cent of older Londoners
say London is becoming increasingly
unaffordable for them, and
only 37 per cent agree with the
statement ‘I feel confident I will
get quality healthcare when I
need it’.
Ms Wood said: “Decision
makers urgently need to look at
what older Londoners are saying
now and reflect this in every decision
they make – this is the fastest
growing demographic in the
capital and yet this isn’t reflected
in decision making.”
A spokesman for mayor Sadiq
Khan said the the city’s elderly
are “hugely valued” and that he “is
determined to continue building
a fairer and more prosperous
London that works for everyone,
including all older Londoners”.
He said: “The Mayor is working
to make the capital a more agefriendly
city via a range of policies.
He is investing in homes that meet
the needs of older Londoners.
“He is making public transport
more accessible. He is cleaning
up London’s polluted air, which is
disproportionately affecting older
people.
“He is also funding support for
older Londoners at risk of fuel
poverty and investing in basic
digital skills training targeted at
older Londoners.”
He added: “His work with
London boroughs to encourage
the take up of the Pension Credit
has helped thousands of older
Londoners receive an additional
£8.4 million in benefits so far and
he has also invested £600,000 to
help low-income and marginalised
communities, including older
Londoners.
“But there is clearly much more
to do and Sadiq will continue
working from City Hall to ensure
older Londoners not only feel
valued, but can thrive in our city.”
A Government spokesman said:
“This Government is protecting
pensioners with the biggest State
Pension increase in history this
year as well as boosting Pension
Credit – worth around £3,500
a year for those on the lowest
incomes.
“On top of this, pensioners most
in need will receive up to £600
this winter to help with essential
costs and we are bearing down
on inflation to make everyone’s
money go further.”

WORKING AT
THE GHERKIN

WE sat down with Martins Dacis, the general
manager working for Searcys at the Gherkin.
He talks about his role at Searcys, his
favourite cocktail and why he loves working
in the Gherkin.
Tell us about your role at Searcys.
I joined Searcys at the Gherkin in June
2021 and since then, not one day has been
the same. The role of general manager is
extremely varied, at least mine is, as Searcys
at the Gherkin offers a restaurant, bar and
different event spaces that all need managing
in tandem. Last year alone, we hosted over
909 events and saw over 37,000 guests
come through our doors. I don’t tend to
have a ‘typical day’, and that is probably what
I find most interesting about the job. One day
might be filled with meetings, while the next
might be all about managing and supporting
my team.
What’s your favourite part of the
job?
Our customers. Making each visit at the
Gherkin a special moment, whether it’s for
a birthday, an anniversary, or a private event.
Just this year alone, we’ve helped celebrate
1,500 birthdays, 500 anniversaries and
organised 530 events. I make it my priority
each month to personally check and respond
to the hundreds of customer feedback we
receive, to ensure the quality of service we
provide is exceeding expectations.
What do you love about working in
the Gherkin?
I love working in one of London’s most spectacular
buildings, home to Searcys restaurant
and Iris Bar, which are both operated by
incredibly hard-working people. I also love
that every day is unique.
What’s your favourite cocktail and
why?
SEARCYS Fizz, our signature cocktail made
with Apple and Rhubarb infused vodka, elderflower
syrup, lemon juice and Searcys Champagne.
It is the perfect aperitif before a meal,
has a great balance of flavours and it shows
how Searcys Champagne can be used in
variety of cocktails. I would also never say no
to any of the classics like an Aviation, a G&T,
Champagne or a glass of Whispering Angel.
How do you come up with new
concepts on drinks?
Creating a new cocktail is always a team
effort, starting from our experienced
bartenders and ending with the entire staff
trilling the drinks before they’re added to the
menu. We like to research what is currently
trending in the cocktail world, keeping in
mind the seasonality and availability of local
produce and the colours scheme chosen
for new cocktail ideas. We then ask each
bartender to come up with a few cocktails
for the team to test, select a couple for the
shortlist and master the chosen ones before
adding it to the menu.

Depends on the season; during summer

TRAVEL
At Madeira Valley Forest Park on the east side
of St Vincent all funds received from admissions
are reinvested in the park, preserving the
coastal rainforest of the lower Massey Valley
and agro-forestry in Biabou. Agricultural life
can be explored in further depth on a local
farming tour, including explanations of rainwater
harvesting techniques and fantastic
views of passion flower fields.
Visitors can also savour an elegant afternoon
spent in the Montreal Garden and
Botanical Gardens, where they can admire
the endemic flora and landscaped terraces
against a dramatic backdrop of rainforestclad
mountains. The banana plants are
particularly impressive and the raised altitiude
of 1,5000 feet affords wonderful views.
Diving and snorkelling in the
Caribbean
If you’re wondering where to go for diving and
snorkelling in the Caribbean, then you’re in
luck because St Vincent and The Grenadines
is the perfect place. Beneath the surface of
the glistening waters are coral reefs and
gardens, dramatic cliffs and caves to explore,
as well as marine life ranging from turtles and
tropical fish to rays, starfish and reef sharks.

Whether snorkelling from white-sand
beaches or heading out in a boat for an offshore
dive there is something for everyone
to enjoy.
Tobago Cays
The five islands that make up the Tobago Cays
all form part of the National Marine Park that
protects these waters. Four of the five islands
also lie within a horseshoe-shaped reef,
ensuring excellent reef diving and snorkelling
excursions. Here there are abundant green
turtles, with sightings almost guaranteed
thanks to conservation efforts. Shallow waters
make it ideal for snorkellers as well as divers,
and they can expect to see angelfish and
stingrays, banded butterflyfish and lobsters.
Mayreau Island
This idyllic island is a hot spot for snorkelling
and scuba diving. With a vibrant reef,
which comes close to shore in the north, it
is home to coral gardens, turtles, sharks and
stingrays. Mayreau Gardens is considered
the most beautiful attraction, a deep reef
that can be reached by boat and offers drift
diving as well as snorkelling to spot colourful
sponges, sharks and hawksbill turtles.
Canouan
In the southern Grenadines, this island offers
some of the best shore snorkelling with long
reefs fringing the coast and calm waters.
With a small population of less than 2,000
people, it is unspoilt, mainly visited by boats
during the day to explore its bays. Here snorkellers
can expect to see colourful reef fish
as well as brain coral and green turtles.
The ideal yachting and sailing
destination
Away from the hubbub of the Caribbean
tourist spots, St Vincent and The Grenadines
offers the ultimate island-hopping adventure.
An arc of 32 mostly uninhabited volcanic
islands within the Lesser Antilles, this Caribbean
hideaway is of the world’s most desirable
yachting destinations for travellers seeking
the serenity of sun, sand and seclusion.
Landscapes encompass jungle-clad volcanoes,
lagoons and white-sand beaches, while
under the glinting Caribbean waters there are
coral reefs, turtles and reef sharks to discover.
Steady winds make St Vincent and The
Grenadines an ideal location to learn to sail
year round and with temperatures a balmy
25 to 33 degrees centigrade its the ideal
temperature for nautical pursuits.
With so many bays and beaches to explore,
it is easy to find a secluded spot, and the
small-scale hotels and resorts that dot the
islands provide a welcome spot for lunches
and dinners with sea views.
Vibrant marine life
When dropping anchor, holidaymakers can
plunge right into the warm waters to enjoy
excellent snorkelling and diving conditions
with good visibility and dazzling marine life.
Swimming among green turtles feeding
on seagrass in the secluded lagoon of
Tobago Cays Marine Park is a highlight, and
the reefs surrounding these virgin islands
are home to everything from stingrays and
butterflyfish to reef sharks and starfish.
Pristine beaches
Every sailor can find their dream beach in
St Vincent and The Grenadines, there are
perfect stretches of powdered white sands,
or even black-sand bays. Fringed by swaying
palms, lapped by calm shallow waters,
they are perfect for swimming, with some
offering other watersports such as kayaking,
standup paddleboarding and snorkelling.
Beachfront restaurants serve up grilled
catch of the day and rum punches, while
other beaches are completely deserted,
perfect for a castaway experience.
Nature meets culture
Mooring up in the harbours dotted
throughout the nine inhabited islands, visitors
can explore the riches on land as well.
Hiking trails along the volcanic peaks
enthral walkers with a cacophony of birdsong
beneath the canopy of majestic trees
and epic views across the Caribbean Sea.
There are horse riding expeditions and visits
to waterfalls tucked within rich jungles, not
to mention lush gardens to explore, filled
with exotic species.
The still active La Soufriere Volcano on St
Vincent island is a unique hiking experience,
while the walk to the Dark View Waterfall
includes a stop off at the Walliabou Site,
where Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean was

Dirty Bagel
While there are a number of tasty food stalls
in Spitalfields Market there is one that really
stands out for its simplicity and originality.
Dirty Bagel is like no other bagel that we
tried here at City Matters, while many other
bagels shop fill their menu with a plethora
of choices Dirty Bagel goes that other way
completely, they only have the one. One
bagel is all you need when it tastes at good
as it does, they are indeed pulled pork
specialists with melt in your mouth meat,
your choice of extras and tasty toppings.
By keeping the selection so limited it allows
for a focus on quality over quantity, and it
certainly delivers. Prepared right in front of
you by their friendly staff it’s hard not a stare
as your bagel is heaped with mountains of
shredded pulled pork, cheddar cheese that
is melted with a blowtorch and spicy jalapenos
with American mustard, simply divine!

Bagel Express
If you’re a fan of a hearty and alternative
bagels than Bagel Express is certainly the
place for you. With a menu almost overflowing
with options it can be hard to come
to make a choice in the moment. They take
care to make sure every detail of their bagel
is looked at to ensure maximum flavour
and enjoyment. Each bagel is buttered
which adds another layer of flavour,

Bagelmania
Here at City Matters we try our best to look
for those that try to do things a bit different
and Bagelmania does that in all the best
ways. Not only do they have all the classics
we’ve come to know and love (such as hot
salt beef and salmon and cream cheese) they
set themselves apart with their Build Your
Own bagels. If you’ve anything like me then
this can be the worst thing ever as you stand
there for the next five minutes umming and
ahing on what to get. Thankfully, no matter
what you go for there it’s always going to be
a delicious choice.
Another curiosity of Bagelmania that
certainly lives up to the name is the large
selection of bagel burgers and though at
first, I was a little apprehensive, I soon came
round to their way of thinking. On a slightly
chewy (but entirely delicious) bagel you
have your choice of 6oz burgers, chicken
fillet and hot salt brisket with various accompaniments
it was a real treat to try them. My
suggestion is to grab a tasty bagel then pop
round the corner to Finsbury Circus Gardens
and grab a seat while you enjoy, perfection.
