PUMPKIN PANCAKES HAVE ARRIVED
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Oceanview Restaurant on the corner of Beach and Grant
Avenues in Cape May. It’s right across the street from Cape May Beach
Patrol headquarters.
The vibe: We ordered takeout, so we popped in and out rather
quickly. They did have a good crowd for a Friday afternoon with their
booths filled with guests enjoying a late breakfast, a few cups of coffee
and a club sandwich or two. A few patrons chose a spot at the counter
instead to enjoy their meal, very much giving into the diner atmosphere.
Servers were hustling around refilling coffees and clearing plates, but
not one without a smile on their face. We’ve always noticed the staff’s
happy attitudes when we visit and today was no different. When everyone
is in a good mood, it boosts morale and service which will definitely
keep us coming back!
The food: Comfort diner food was the theme of Friday’s lunch. Jack
went for the turkey pesto panini filled with bacon, sundried tomatoes
and mozzarella. Kayla chose the chicken Caesar wrap with a side of
fries that also came with fresh coleslaw that had a nice sweetness to it
and a side of pickles. Courtney needed a nap after enjoying her meal —
an open-face hot turkey sandwich with fries slathered in gravy. After
all that goodness, a few boxes were still left with some scraps to pick
at later on. The menu at Oceanview is so versatile, there’s something
for everyone. Think hometown diner that serves all your favorites and
friendly people serving it. What more do you need for a simple, delicious
meal? We’ll be visiting again, hopefully to give breakfast a shot,
too — there’s plenty to try on that menu.
The takeaway: Oceanview Restaurant is currently open daily from
7am-2pm serving breakfast and lunch. Mark your calendars because
beginning October 20, they’ll only be open Fri-Sun, but not closing for
the season until December 3. On a more important note, their pumpkin
pancakes are back, which means that we will absolutely be returning for
breakfast before the season ends.

www.luckybonesgrill.com
This local legend of an eatery serves up their signature
breakfast items, mouth-watering lunches and
generous dinners all in a welcoming and relaxed
environment.
Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
food (the thin-crust pizzas are excellent), great bar
vibe and service. Lucky Bones gets it right every time.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
The two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
still coming to our feeders reminds
me that it is transition time. Summer
birds are leaving, winter residents are
arriving. Ma Nature deals a new hand
every day, making every day a natural treasure
hunt no matter what the season.
When I head down to our riverfront park,
I’ll find our summer troop of Laughing Gulls
greatly diminished. Adults shed their black
hoods in August, but birds still linger on our
beaches into November. New for the winter
season will be Ring-billed Gulls. Brandishing
yellow legs and a dark ring near the tip of
the bill, these nimble, terrestrial gulls breed
on inland freshwater lakes and split for the
Jersey Shore in fall to spend the winter. Less
aquatic than the larger Herring and Great
Black-backed Gulls, Ring-billed patrols the
shore searching for food items deposited by
the tide or profligate humans.
Taking advantage of America’s burgeoning
fast food culture, many Ring-billed Gulls
have taken to patrolling the parking lots of
fast-food joints and shopping centers. Setting
up territories, surveying their realm from
streetlamps. When you drop your super-sized
bag of fries, it belongs to the gulls.
I’ve amused myself for hours watching
parking lot gulls duke it out for top-gull honors.
Here at our riverside park, the arrival of
food profligate humans is greeted by squealing
“long calls” and a squabble for good positioning.
Yes, the birds recognize the cars.
So don’t help a good gull go bad. There is
plenty of natural food available and gulls are
good at finding it.
As the winter season progresses, other
gull species will infiltrate our region. Lesser
Black-backed Gulls have increased exponentially
on our beaches. Once rare enough
to mandate a written species description by
the state bird record committee, now these
European gulls are almost as common as
Herring Gull, our most common beach gull.
But out in the chop, it is the tiny Bonaparte’s
Gulls that will wheel and dance. Among them
will be the occasional Little Gull (distinguished
by sooty underwings).
So don’t be bummed because the summer
birds are leaving. Look forward to the
wealth of winter specialties like gulls and
assorted waterfowl. A walk down the beach
wouldn’t be the same without the keening cry
of Herring Gull or the frantic dash of sandpipers
playing tag with the waves. Every winter
storm deals you a new hand to play. New
birds and new possibilities.
The season of Halloween movies is
all about what scares us, and there
are some true storytelling royalty.
We celebrate the likes of King, Rice,
Peele, Shelley, Hitchcock — yes. But
there are few better spokespersons — wait,
let’s say grand marshals for the parade of horror
— than Edgar Allan Poe.
Poe is one of my favorites because of his
innovative publishing and imaginative stories,
which have been celebrated for years
in a variety of movies. These titles are at a
crossroads: still very popular but also in the
public domain. That leaves them wide open to
very loose interpretation by filmmakers. The
result is fresh perspectives on classic tales of
suspense.
The trouble is that some of Poe’s most
recognizable works are short stories and
poems. How do you get a feature movie out
of that? Well, how about an entire season to
steam! Prominent horror/suspense writer-director
Mike Flanagan has done just that.
His new Netflix series, The Fall of the House
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
of Usher, premiered last week. There have been
other adaptations of this beloved and horrifying
story. None were like this. Flanagan takes
the plot in directions few would even dream
of. In the original short story, there was no talk
about how Roderick Usher’s children died —
in this retelling, that’s most of the plot.
That’s just one element that makes this
different. Others come from Poe’s complete
catalog. All of the kids have names you’re
very familiar with if you love the author:
Annabelle, Lenora, even The Raven! So, this
series is truly an homage to Poe.
In the beginning, you are given imagery
that reminds you of Poe’s biggest fear: being
buried alive. Outstanding technique and storytelling.
Another aspect in this series that
we don’t see in any Poe is a presentation of
diverse races. Poe was bold in presenting
tough themes like incest, death, grief, insanity,
but he stopped short from presenting a
diverse cast of characters in his stories. This
reimagining corrects all that.
This is certainly not your great grandfather’s
Edgar Allan Poe! This is an imaginative,
modern, and visionary re-creation. Oh, and
scary, just in time for scary season!
Let’s stay with this season’s movies and
streaming playlists. Anything you’re watching?
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, host a gathering!
The gathering season is coming. If you’re
lucky enough to have people who love
you, some parties are mandatory. If
you’re extremely lucky, you have so
many people who want to see you that
you have to negotiate — we’ll see Grandma A
for Thanksgiving this year, and Grandma B next
year. On the other hand, perhaps major changes
have thrown your traditions into a tailspin and
you’re not sure you have anywhere to go. Both
situations can add tension to your joyous occasions.
Diffuse that tension — host a party for the
heck of it. Give yourself a chance to gather with
people who make you laugh and who don’t ask
you when you’re meeting life’s next milestone.
Hosting a party is good for you, according
to psychologists, and not just because it makes
you clean your house. Interacting with friends
boosts your immune system and helps to stave
off dementia. Humans have evolved to form
social bonds, and maintaining them makes us
feel good. And, if you’re not very comfortable
with hosting, those same experts suggest hosting
more frequently, thereby lowering the stakes.
You will stress less if you have several gatherings
a year. If you’re new to hosting, start with simple
parties — consider a two-hour gathering for
hors d’oeuvres on a Thursday night, hot chocolate
and cookies after the PTO meeting, or a
Saturday morning hike and picnic. With each
event, you’ll become more comfortable.
In your invitation, give your guests an idea
of what to expect. Call it a game night, or crafting
party, or wine tasting. Your guests will have
different expectations of welcome party for new
neighbors than a World Series party. Consider
including an end time on the invitation. Let people
know how many other guests are expected
— is it an intimate dinner party of six or a noisy
dance party for 25? Be clear that no gifts are
expected, but be gracious when presented with
one for hosting. Accept offers of help, but don’t
let anyone hijack your party. Use your “good”
plates. Don’t fret if things go awry — today’s
minor disaster becomes something to laugh
about for the next party.
Keep your bar simple — consider a pitcher
of a signature drink so no one has to bartend.
Include festive non-alcoholic options, too. If
you’re cooking, prepare something you’ve made
before, including a dessert. You can also use
a caterer like Homestyle-to-Go in West Cape
May (homestyletogo.net). Or, consider a sandwich
tray from Westside Market (westsidemarketwestcapemay.com)
or wings from C-View.
Your favorite fine-dining restaurant may also
offer catering. Consider more affordable options
like pizza or Wawa hoagie box.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My 13-year-old daughter spends hours in
front of the computer, and I’m concerned. Not
only that, but the fact her sedentary lifestyle is
putting weight on her which she may never get
rid of because of these bad habits, i.e. eating in
front of the computer. Her dad is a fitness nut
and is at North Beach Gym four or five days
a week. I go occasionally, but I realize that I
should be setting a better example. She used to
be very athletic but seems to have lost interest
in the last year. What can we do to encourage
her to get up and out? — Worried Mom
Dear Worried
It is admirable that you are not only
worried but realize that your habits are also
up for scrutiny if you start lecturing your
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
daughter. Why not have the whole family
join North Beach Gym? There are plenty of
classes and machines that allow the three of
you to go your separate ways, yet the fact that
you go together ensures no one gets away
with making an excuse to stay home. Reward
yourselves once in a while with a trip to Uncle
Bill’s Pancake House after the gym. As to
eating in front of the computer, attendance at
the dinner table should be mandatory.
Dear Answer Lady
My girlfriend and I are always together,
and her husband teases us about it. We went
to Beach Plum Farm and she packed a picnic
basket with lunch and a bottle of wine. Her
husband said, “You two look like you’re going
on a date.” We go to all the festivals and have
the best time. My problem is that she loves
rainbows. She wears rainbow attire all the
time. Sneakers, T-shirts, leggings... you get
the idea. I’m still looking for Mr. Right and
I am not going to find him with her because
people think we’re a couple. Can I tell her to
wear something else when we go out? I’m
pretty sure she’s oblivious. — Rainbow Brite
Dear Rainbow
How ‘bout this? Enjoy your time together
and look for Mr. Right on your own time. You
can make a casual observation that her attire
is demagnetizing your male attraction button
and see how it lands. Most likely she will laugh
and dismiss it. The Answer Lady must say a
friend like this is rare. You seem to have a good
attitude about the “confusion,” so let it go.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
RIPLEY is a friendly three-year-old boy who
loves to be with people. He is treat motivated,
which makes his training much easier — he’s
making great progress with his impulsive
behavior. Ripley is eager to find a new loving
home. He would do best with a family who
is knowledgeable about working with food
guarding issues and is ready for some energy.
ZELDA is a young girl who came to the shelter
when her family could no longer care for her.
She has a lot of energy and loves to run in the
yard. Zelda is treat motivated which helps with
training. Her leash skills need some work, but
she is progressing. Zelda would thrive in a
home with experience training a young German
Shepard.
HARRY is a delightful four-year-old boy
who loves everyone he meets. He came to
the shelter when his family could no longer
care for him. He lived in an active home with
several children but is uncomfortable with
loud noises. Harry has excellent manners and
seems to be fine walking by other dogs and is
not one to escape through an open door.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Five beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
SHIRLEY TEMPLE AND MIMOSA came
from a hoarder house and are believed to be
mother and daughter. They love each other
and it would be best if adopted together. Shirley
sometimes shivers in fear but loves to be
pet. These girls need a safe and loving home
when they’ll be well taken care of. Other cats
in the home are perfectly fine.
BODEGA was brought to the shelter after she
was picked up in front of Shoprite. Turns out
she had five kittens behind the store and was
looking for food for quite some time. They all
came to the shelter and the kittens have all
been adopted. Bodega is a two-year-old girl
ready for a loving home — she would do well
with dogs and children.
CITRINE AND TOPAZ were rescued from a
trailer park as kittens. The pair came in with
severe upper respiratory and eye infections.
After much love and care, they’ve become the
most grateful, sweet and happy cats ever. The
scarring on their eyes does not bother them
and they’d do well in a home with other cats,
dogs and children.
