THE FREEDOM COACH Pictured is a group enjoying an outing on the Freedom Coach. This local charity provides affordable transport for outings, shopping and allows local people (some with mobility issues) to access groups and activities which they would otherwise not be able to attend. There is a rear passenger lift making it wheelchair accessible. Fundraising has been carried out and grants have also been applied for by Blairgowrie and District Seniors Outings which allows us to offer outings at a very reduced rate. If you would like to find out more about any of our services please contact Charlie Bisset (administrator / relief driver) on 07746567528 or Ian Dennis (driver / coordinator ) at i.dennis@sky.com At a recent Blairgowrie Freedom Coach Association meeting the new Chairman Malcolm Davidson presented James Gibb with an engraved clock and thanked him for his service to the association as Chairman and previously as secretary/ trustee for BFCA. James has been involved with the Freedom Coach for over 25 years and is a staunch supporter of this affordable, wheelchair accessible community transport provider for people in Blairgowrie and district. Malcolm expressed his thanks for everything James has done over the years and also that he is willing to continue on the committee now for advice and support for Malcolm in his new role. In only a few years, Blair Ukes has grown up from being just a handful of people meeting in someone’s house to the crowd of over 20 who now meet every Monday morning in the Life Plus church hall in William Street. Some of us are also meeting on Wednesday nights and some go out and about to entertain various groups in the community. All this increased activity has made it necessary for us to get insurance – and to incur a cost which we had not expected. To help cover this cost, we needed to become a properly constituted organisation, with agreed aims and principles. So, if you are still reading this, we are now a ‘non-profit-making group whose purpose is to promote ukuleleplaying for reasons of: enjoyment, education and well-being; promote interaction within the community; and support charity through fundraising and provision of entertainment.’ Our mission statement contains much more detail (yawn) but I’m sure you’ve had quite enough of this already! News & Articles In spite of all this bureaucracy, our existing membership remains enthusiastic – such that we still have a waiting list for new members. And, in keeping with our aim to ‘interact with the community’, we are booked for three gigs in November: • at West Muir SWI on Thursday, November 2nd; • at the Stroke Club on Monday, November 13th; and • at the Christmas Lights Switch-on event on Saturday, November 25th. Three more gigs have been scheduled for December: • at Meigle Senior Citizens on Tuesday, December 12th; • at the Friendship Café on Thursday, December 14th; and • at Ashgrove Court on Monday, December 18th (t.b.c.). Big thanks once again to our fantastic leader, Jane Ward. The main contact point for Blair Ukes is now: blairukes@gmail.com This year we were fortunate to be able to book two picking times at the Blueberry fields and raised £420 to help feed the children of Kankhunkwe School in Northern Malawi, thanks to the very generous decision of the Thomson family to share their blueberry crop with local charities. Blairgowrie and District Group of volunteers for Mary’s Meals aim to raise £6,000 each year to support the 559 children in our school. Due to the great success of the charity more children attend the school each year. The Kankhunkwe children are mightily blessed to receive this latest collection. They send their grateful thanks to the Thomson’s and to all those who took time to come along, donate and pick the berries. Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries. Many families live through farming, but struggle to grow enough food. It is home to our largest school feeding programme and, today, almost one in three primary school children in the country receives Mary’s Meals. Our next fundraiser will be the Ceilidh in the Blairgowrie Town Hall on Friday 12th January 2024. This is a very popular event and tickets sell fast. If you wish to be there contact Margaret 01250 875086 and enjoy a great night of dance with Nicol Maclaren and a fabulous supper produced by the volunteers for only £15.
