Dear Friends:
After an action-packed fall full of exciting changes and
new directions for YHS, we’re cautiously optimistic
as we head into a winter full of both challenges and
promise. In this issue you’ll read about our new Thrift Shop, which opens this
month, as well as the success of our new Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic! Both
of these efforts will help us succeed in our mission to promote the welfare and
humane treatment of companion animals. The new clinic directly addresses our
efforts to combat pet overpopulation in Yavapai County by offering low-cost spays
and neuters, and the Thrift Shop will become a new revenue source for us, which is
badly needed in the midst of this current recession.
Unfortunately, this economy has been very tough on nonprofits in general and
especially hard on the Humane Society. Our surrender or “intake” rate has
increased an astounding 100% over this same period in 2008. Last year, we took
in an average of 223 dogs and cats per month. In 2009, we are currently averaging
442 dogs and cats per month, in large part due to owners surrendering their pets
due to financial hardship. Sadly, donations have not kept pace with this increase.
We are now facing the prospect of cutting our services in this community due to a
lack of funding.
While I hate to be the bearer of bad news during the holiday season, our financial
situation is a sad reality that all animal lovers in Yavapai County need to be aware
of. The Yavapai Humane Society is the only “open admission” shelter in this area.
Since I came on board as executive director last year, it has been our policy not to
turn any animal away. We are confident and hopeful that we can continue on this
path, as it is the best way to save animal’s lives.
So this holiday season, as you celebrate with your friends and family, please
think too about the companion animals in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley
and Dewey Humboldt. For more than 37 years, this community has faithfully
supported the Yavapai Humane Society. We are confident that our donors and
supporters will step up now, when we need it most.
Sincerely,
Letter from the
“Tea & Mystery”
Coming in February
The third annual “Tea & Mystery” event takes place Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the
Prescott Resort and Conference Center, 1500 E. Highway 69 in Prescott, starting at 1:00 p.m.
New York Times best-selling author J.A. Jance will be back for a command performance to
speak at the event about her career as an author and sign her bestselling books. Her latest
thriller “Trial by Fire,” will be available December 1st. Guests can bring their own books
for signing or purchase books at the tea, which are being provided by The Worm Bookstore
in Prescott. A percentage of book sales will be donated to YHS to help us save companion
animals in Yavapai County.
Jance, who grew up in Bisbee Arizona and currently splits her time between Tucson and
Seattle, has numerous NY Times bestsellers among her 40 mysteries and thrillers including
collections about detective J.P. Beaumont, broadcast journalist Ali Reynolds and Sheriff
Joanna Brady.
Tickets are being sold in advance for $35 per person and can be purchased by calling the Yavapai Humane Society at
desserts are included in the admission price. For more information, call Bi Sallomi at (928) 776-1676.
YHS Thrift Shop Now Open!
We now have our own Thrift Shop! The YHS Thrift Shop opened last week at Willow Creek Plaza near the old K-Mart
store in the former 99-Cent Store space. Sales are brisk and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to raise more money
to save animal’s lives.
“Opening this thrift shop is another way for us to fund our programs and operations so we can keep up our good work
in this challenging economy,” said YHS Executive Director Duane Adams. “This is a critical time for all non profits in
Yavapai County. This economy has resulted in a 100% increase in surrendered animals over last year, and, unfortunately,
donations have not kept pace with that increase. Rather than
compromise our services, we need to look for new revenue
streams so we can keep saving animal’s lives in this community.”
The Thrift Shop is open from 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through
Saturday and closed Sundays. Gently used merchandise of all
kinds is accepted during operating hours. Also, YHS is looking
for an individual or business with a used moving truck they would
be willing to donate to YHS so we can start picking up donations
of large items on a regular basis. YHS will create magnet signage
for both sides of our moving truck identifying the donor and their
business for as long as we retain the vehicle.
Please contact the Thrift Shop at (928) 445-5668 if you have
questions about donations or have a large donation that needs to
be picked up.

Success Stories
Buddy
Buddy came to the Yavapai Humane Society in September in
very bad shape. The four-month-old brindle shepherd mix had
been hit by a car. He lost one of his eyes in the accident, and
one of his hind legs was severely injured. According to our
shelter Veterinarian, Dr. Lisa Darling, most of the muscle mass
in Buddy’s injured leg was destroyed, and he was in extreme
pain when he was surrendered to
YHS. Not a pretty picture to be
sure, and the prospects for Buddy
at another shelter might have been
very grim.
But rather than put Buddy down,
which 90% of shelter veterinarians
probably would have done, Dr.
Darling decided instead to bring
in three other veterinarians for a
consultation on Buddy’s condition.
After reviewing his case, the team
decided amputation was the best
choice for Buddy. So Dr Darling
contacted one of our partners from
the Arizona Humane Society, Dr.
Leo Eagar, who just happened to
be at the shelter that day helping
out with spays and neuters in our
shelter clinic. Dr. Egar amputated
Buddy’s right hind leg at a huge discount, right here at the
shelter.
Buddy responded beautifully! Amazingly, just one day after
surgery, the little puppy that’d been through so much was
romping around the YHS administrative trailer, working out
those three good legs and getting into mischief! The staff was
amazed at the determined little dog’s upbeat disposition in
spite of all he’d been through, but Dr. Darling noted that finally,
after several days of excruciating pain, Buddy was pain free and
it was a tremendous relief!
When he was well enough to leave the
clinic, Buddy was placed in a foster
home and ended up in a great one! His
foster family had several other dogs,
horses, and lots of land for Buddy to
run. He thrived! After a week in
Foster care, Buddy came back to the
shelter and moved into the kennels
with the rest of the shelter dogs
waiting for their new families to find
them. Fortunately, Buddy didn’t have
to wait long. Two days to be exact.
Buddy’s home now with his forever
family and they are thrilled to have
him! But his story might have ended
much differently had Buddy been
dropped off anywhere but the Yavapai
Humane Society. That’s why we are
here, to save dogs like Buddy. That’s
why we have a motivated staff who are passionate about saving
animal’s lives, and that’s why we have scores of volunteer
foster families, volunteers, dog walkers, and cat caregivers.
Together, we are all in the business of saving animal’s lives.
Thank you, for your continued support.
New Spay/Neuter &
Wellness Clinic Update
Our new Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic is now fully operational and doing a steady business
in combating pet overpopulation in Yavapai County! Since the clinic became fully operational
on September 17th, we’ve performed nearly 600 spay/neuter procedures and provided low-cost vaccinations for more than 120
pets. We have treated more than 700 pets in the past six weeks, which exceeds our expectations for the clinic’s initial opening.
Included in our opening numbers are spays and neuters for 119 pit bulls and pit bull mixes as part of our “Pitstop” program,
which was funded by a grant provided through the sale of Pet Friendly license plates in Arizona.
The clinic is still not at full surgical capacity and there is currently no waiting list, so please help us spread the word that low-cost
spays and neuters are available at the YHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic at 2989 Centerpointe East, Suite B, in Prescott.
Call (928) 771-0547 for an appointment for your pet or visit www.yavapaihumane.org for more information and a fee list.
Community Partners
The Yavapai Humane Society is looking for local Community Partners that will help us
further our mission of promoting the welfare and humane treatment of companion animals.
Our Community Partner program allows local businesses to assist the Yavapai
Humane Society in raising much needed funds that will be used to help house, feed
and provide medical treatment for our homeless pet population. These funds may also
be used to help in our future expansions, including our new Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic
which opened in September.
For as little as $125.00 a month your business can participate in our Community Partners
Program. These funds can be raised from donation jars at your location, with donations from
your clients and customers or from programs such as the “round up program” which allows
customers to round up their purchase price to the nearest dollar. The additional monies come
to YHS.
Special thanks to these Community Partners:
Do You Know Someone Who can Help YHS?
Please help us care for an animal in need. Your contribution, large or small,
will help to underwrite veterinarian care for a sick or injured animal in our clinic,
or a pet who brings affection and comfort to a lonely elderly person on a very
small income. Or, it could help feed, medicate, and spay/neuter a dog or cat in
our Adoption Center.
If you have a well-loved
pet, think of all the
homeless animals who
long to have the same
good fortune. By
Q&A with
Sam Kabbel
Pets and a New Baby
Q: How is my pet likely to respond to the
new baby?
There are lots of variables so that’s hard to predict. However,
there are some considerations that might give some insight
into your pet’s most likely reaction.
The first of these considerations is how much exposure to
children your pet has previously had, and his reaction to those
children. The most serious concern, of course, is if the pet has
previously behaved aggressively or fearfully around children.
If there have been previous problems, you should consult with
a behaviorist to determine the situations that have previously
led to aggression, and the safest way, if any, to make the
transition.
The next most serious concern is the pet that has had little
or no exposure to young children or babies. A lack of early
socialization to children may lead to some initial anxiety or
fear associated with the sights, sounds and odors of the new
child. If there are no unpleasant experiences when the child
first arrives, and the first few introductions are made positive,
there may be no problems. Even if a pet has shown no
previous problems when interacting with children, keeping all
introductions positive will help to get the relationship between
your pet and your new child off to a good start.
One final concern is your pet’s behavior and temperament
in general. Behavior issues that don’t come into play with
an infant may become more problematic with the growth and
development of your child. Some pets that were ok with a
child that was carried everywhere may have trouble adapting
to the same child learning to crawl, walk, and play more
interactively. Fear, dominance challenges, possessive displays,
and even some rambunctious playful behaviors can result in
aggression toward the child.
Q: What can we do to prepare for the arrival
of our baby?
Behavior problems (destructiveness, house-soiling,
compulsive disorders, increased demands for attention,
generalized anxiety) may not develop directly from the arrival
of the child, but rather from the changes in the household
routine associated with the new arrival. The best way to
minimize problems and help the pet to cope is to make
changes gradually so that they have been completed prior to
the arrival of the child. Consider any changes that you may
need to make in the pet’s schedule, housing, play, exercise,
or attention, so that adjustments can begin to be made well
before the baby’s arrival. Set up the nursery in advance and if
the pet is to be kept out of the room, access should be denied
before the child’s arrival. If your intention is to allow your
pet to continue to enter the room when supervised, begin to
accompany your pet into the nursery so that it can adapt to
the new odors and new setup. The dog should be allowed to
investigate the baby’s room, blankets, and new furniture, and
Winter 2009/10
praised or given a small food treat so that it can develop a
positive association with each of these new cues. Any existing
behavior problems should be resolved before the arrival of
your baby.
For cats, the most important adaptation is to any changes that
will be needed in the cat’s home. Although fear and anxiety
to the sights and sounds of a new baby are possible, adapting
to changes in the household are often the most trying for
cats. For example, obtaining new furniture, altering the cat’s
feeding, sleeping, elimination or play areas, and trying to
keep the cat out of certain locations such as the crib, should
all be considered before the arrival of the baby. To reduce
the chances of the cat marking new furniture, the first few
introductions to the new areas should be well supervised.
Once your cat has investigated and rubbed against the new
furniture, spraying is far less likely. Similarly, when the crib
or cradle is first set up, the cat may wish to mark the area, or
investigate, or even to sleep in the crib.
Q: What should be done when the baby
arrives?
Progress gradually, avoid any situations that might lead to
fear, anxiety or discomfort in the baby’s presence and make all
associations and experiences in the baby’s presence positive.
Maintain or even increase the amount and type of training,
exercise, and play.
Even a curious and affectionate pet may have some problems
adjusting to the new arrival. Jumping up to greet when the
baby is being carried, barking during the baby’s sleep or
nap times, raiding the diaper pail, licking the baby’s face,
or cuddling up to sleep against an infant who is still unable
to shift position are just a few of the concerns and potential
problems that pet owners may need to deal with.
Many pets soon learn that the presence of the baby is a time
for inattention, confinement, or even punishment, while the
absence of the baby is a cue for “good things” to happen. This
must be reversed. Every effort should be made to allow the
pet into the room for food, play or affection when the baby
is present. Feed the pet when the baby is being fed, or have
another family member give affection to the pet, play with the
pet, or do some reward training (tricks or other obedience
training) when the child is in the room. Take your dog
outdoors for play or a walk when you are taking the child out.
The goal is to teach the pet that positives or “good things” are
most likely to happen in the presence of the child.
Q: What should be done if aggression arises?
Such behavior is very upsetting, regardless of its reasons. An
immediate decision on whether to keep and work with the pet
or remove it from the home must be made. Dogs targeting
children may be motivated by fear, dominance, possessive,
redirected, playful or predatory aggression. For most
aggression cases, especially those directed toward children, a
behaviorist experienced in such issues would need to evaluate
the situation, determine a prognosis and create an effective
treatment program if it is safe to do so.
Thank you for always stopping by our
Shelter on Christmas eve! We’re so
grateful for all the wonderful gifts you
leave our animals!
This year, the Yavapai Humane Society
could really use:
• A Moving Truck for Our Thrift Shop!
• Racks and Shelving for Our Thrift Shop
• Blankets
• Dog and Cat Food
• Copier Paper & Office Supplies
• A Golf Cart or 4-Wheel Buggy
• Paper Towels/Toilet Paper
And most of all Santa, please help us
find loving homes this Christmas for all
our shelter animals!
Love,
The YHS Staff
