Western Wrestling Conference Gears
Up for Sixth Season of Competition
Coming off their best season, the
Western Wrestling Conference, an NCAA
Division I wrestling-only alliance,
will begin its sixth year of competition
in 2011-12.
Charter members of the Western
Wrestling Conference include: the
United States Air Force Academy, North
Dakota State University, the University
of Northern Colorado, the University
of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State
University, Utah ValleyUniversity and
the University of Wyoming.
The WWC had a breakout year in 2010-
11, with three league wrestlers earning
All-American honors. The conference has
now had nine All-Americans in its first
five years of existence. In 2011,
Utah Valley’s Ben Kjar (125) became
the Wolverines’ first-ever wrestling
All-American by placing fourth at the
NCAA Tournament, while Wyoming’s Shane
Onufer (165) and Joe LeBlanc (184)
placed fifth and sixth respectively at
the NCAA Championships. Two out of the
three wrestlers will return in 2011-
12, as Onufer and LeBlanc will both be
seniors for the Cowboys.
LeBlanc has already become the
conference’s first three-time All-
American as he also finished fourth at
the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and fifth
in 2009. Northern Iowa’s Moza Fay was
a two-time placer during his tenure by
finishing sixth at 165 pounds in 2009
and fifth at that same weight in 2008.
In 2010 Northern Colorado’s Justin
Gaethje (157) finished seventh to earn
All-American honors and UNI’s Jarion
Beets (174) placed eighth to accomplish
the same feat.
In all, 17 wrestlers from the WWC
qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division
I Wrestling National Championships,
15 via automatic slots and two atlarge
selections. The WWC had four
competitors who were seeded in the top-
12 of their brackets. At 141 pounds,
Air Force’s Cole VonOhlen was the No. 9
seed and at 165 pounds UW’s Onufer was
slotted in at No. 7. In the 184-pound
weight class, the Cowboys’ LeBlanc,
received the No. 5 slot, while the
Panthers’ Ryan Loder was right behind
him earning the No. 6 seed.
The 2011 NCAA West Regional served as
the conference tournament for the fifth
straight season. The tournament was
held at Clune Arena on the Air Force
Academy grounds in Colorado Springs,
Colo. In the team race, Wyoming held
on to win its second straight West
Regional team title by beating the
former 24-time champion Northern Iowa
Panthers by six points. UNI however
won the league’s regular season dual
title with an unblemished 5-0 record.
In years past Wyoming won the regular
season championship in 2010, UW and UNI
tied for the title in 2009, and the
Panthers were tops in the league after
both the 2008 and 2007 seasons.
The league’s three major postseason
awards in 2011 were given to UVU’s Kjar
for Wrestler of the Year, Loder from
UNI took home the Freshman of the Year
award and Wyoming’s Mark Branch won
Coach of the Year honors.
In the near future, the goal of the
league is to replace the West Regional
with the conference tournament, which
would then serve as the NCAA qualifier.
This year’s NCAA West Regional will
be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at
the McLeod Center on the campus of the
University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls, Iowa.
The WWC recognizes student-athletes
on both a weekly and full-season basis.
Individual awards include Wrestler
of the Week; All-Conference teams;
an Academic All-Conference team; and
Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach of the
Year awards. The league also crowns a
team champion following the conclusion
of the regular season conference
competition and the postseason
tournament.
The governance of the Western
Wrestling Conference remains primarily
with the member institutions. Scheduling
of contests, assignment of officials
and certain media relations functions
remain with member institutions.
With league members spread out over
six states and two time zones, schools
are required to compete against five
league schools in dual action to
be eligible for the regular season
conference championship. However
schools are encouraged to schedule all
conference members.
A major benefit of having a league
that is geographically spread out so
far is the added exposure - both in
terms of media and recruiting - in new
destinations. Theconference affiliation
also generates much interest within the
seven schools’ substantial alumni base,
which numbers nearly 800,000 combined.
North Dakota State, Northern Colorado
and South Dakota State have all made
the move from Division II to Division
I since joining the WWC. UVU moved
directly from Junior College (NJCAA)
Athletics to NCAA Division I and
completed its reclassification before
the 2009-10 season.
WESTERN DOMINANCE
The Western Wrestling
Conference has five completed
seasons to its name. UNI has
captured the WWC dual title
four times. Last season, the
Panthers finished with a 5-0
conference record. A 19-13
victory over No. 24-ranked
Wyoming in their final regular
season dual secured the
conference championship.
RETURNING TWO NCAA QUALIFIERS
Two NCAA Championship qualifiers
return to the Panther lineup
this season. Redshirt sophomore
Ryan Loder (184) was one win
away from achieving All-American
status. Meanwhile, junior David
Bonin (157) bowed out in the
third round of consolation
matches.
PROMISING PANTHER RECRUITS
This year’s Panther squad will
feature many new faces. Of the 28
wrestlers on the preseason roster,
15 are true freshmen or firstyear
transfers. Notable recruits
include JuCo National Champion Joe
Colon (133), who transferred from
Iowa Central, as well as Iowa’s
2011 “Mr. Wrestler” and Waverly
native, Cody Caldwell (174).
OUTLOOK
A YEAR UNDER HIS BELT
Doug Schwab enters his second
season as head coach. In his
debut season, Schwab led UNI
Wrestling to its first 12-win
season since 2003. He was an
assistant coach at Iowa before
joining the Panthers. Before
coaching the Hawkeyes, Schwab was
a three-time All-American and Big
Ten champion at Iowa. He won the
1999 NCAA Title at 141 pounds.
IN THE RANKINGS
Bonin (165) and Loder (184) both
earned spots in preseason rankings
at each of their weight classes.
InterMatWrestle.com projects Bonin
and Loder as No. 18 and No. 8,
respectively, while UNI Wrestling
as a whole is ranked 39th. Amateur
Wrestling News puts Bonin at 17th
and Loder at 9th.
UNI TO HOST NCAA WEST REGIONAL
The 2012 NCAA West Regional
Championships will return to
the McLeod Center March 4. UNI
ended up six points shy of West
Regional Champion Wyoming last
season in Colorado Springs.
The Panthers have won 24 West
Regional Championships and
have never finished lower than
second place.
Head Coach Second Season
Doug Schwab
Prior to the 2010-11 season, University of Northern
Iowa Director of Athletics Troy Dannen tabbed Doug
Schwab as the Panthers’ ninth head coach in the
program’s illustrious history.
“Doug is going to bring passion and intensity back to
UNI wrestling. Panther wrestling has a long and storied
history, and Doug has the championship mentality
necessary to re-establish our program as one of the
best in the nation,” said Dannen, following the hire.
“His expectations for academic success and a
championship lifestyle outside of the wrestling room
will ensure not only competitive successes but more
importantly, enhanced educational experiences for our
student-athletes.”
In his first season as head coach, Schwab did
not waste any time. He led the Panthers to their
first 12-win season since 2003 and helped UNI
earn its fourth Western Wrestling Conference dual
championship.
“My main job is to get the guys to buy into
the lifestyle - that includes on the mat and in
the classroom. I’m looking forward to putting an
exciting product on the mat that fans in the Cedar
Valley can rally behind and come out and watch,”
Schwab said.
Schwab, a native of Osage, Iowa, served as
an assistant coach with the University of Iowa
wrestling team four years after serving as the
team’s volunteer assistant coach in 2006-07.
During his tenure as a Hawkeye assistant, Schwab
helped the Hawkeyes to three NCAA and Big Ten team
titles. During that time, Iowa crowned six NCAA
champions, six Big Ten champions, 23 all-Americans
and 24 academic all-Big Ten honorees. The Hawkeyes
posted an 82-6 dual record - including perfect
records the last two seasons (24-0 in 2008-09,
23-0 in 2009-10).
Several Hawkeye wrestlers earned individual
honors during Schwab’s tenure. Former Hawkeye
Brent Metcalf was awarded the 2008 Dan Hodge
Trophy, which is presented annually to the
nation’s top collegiate wrestler. Former Hawkeye
Mark Perry won his second consecutive NCAA title
in 2008, capturing his fourth all-America honor.
While serving on the Hawkeye staff, Schwab
remained active in international competition.
Schwab represented the United States at the
2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, wrestling
freestyle at 145.5 pounds (66 kg). He won
titles at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and
U.S. Nationals. In 2007 he won the U.S. Senior
Freestyle title, earned a bronze medal at the
2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
and placed fifth at the 2007 World Championships
in Baku, Azerbaijan. Schwab’s other post-college
national wrestling accomplishments include winning
the 145.5-pound title at the 2003 Sunkist Kids
International Open and earning Outstanding Wrestler
honors in the freestyle event. In 2005, Schwab won
the 145-pound division of Real Pro Wrestling, earning
Outstanding Wrestler honors as part of the champion
Iowa Stalkers team.
Prior to joining the Iowa staff, Schwab served two
seasons (2005-06) as an assistant coach at Virginia
Tech University under Tom Brands. During his tenure
with the Hokies, the team won the 2005 regular season
Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record
for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record five
wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Virginia
Tech also crowned five conference champions and two
all-Americans, and senior heavyweight Mike Faust was
named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year.
Schwab was a three-time all-American and Big Ten
champion for the Hawkeyes from 1998-2001. He won
the 1999 NCAA title at 141 pounds and finished his
collegiate career with 130 wins, which ranks 10th-best
in school history.
Schwab was born Aug. 3, 1977. He earned a B.S.
in communication studies from the University of Iowa
in 2001, and is working toward a master’s degree in
kinesiology/sport management at the University of
Minnesota. He and his wife, Allyson, have two sons,
Hayden and Hendrix.
ASST. Coach Second Season
MARK Schwab
Former Panther Mark Schwab joined his brother, Doug, on
the UNI coaching staff, after head coaching stints at NIACC
and Buena Vista University.
At Buena Vista, Schwab was named Iowa Conference Coach of
the Year in 2007 and coached the first four-time NCAA All-
American in the 30-year history of BVU wrestling in Jestin
Hulegaard.
Prior to BVU, Schwab spent nine years as assistant coach
at the University of Minnesota, helping the program to seven
top-three team finishes at the NCAA Championships and two
NCAA team titles.
Schwab also served as an assistant coach at Purdue from
1991-93.
Prior to his coaching experience, Schwab was an All-
American on the mat for the Panthers during the late 1980s.
In his initial season as a Panther, Schwab posted a 49-9
record, the most wins by a true freshman in NCAA history, and
placed fifth in the 1986 NCAA Division I Championships. In
1987, he won the bronze medal in what was called the World’s
Toughest Tournament in Tiblissi, Russia. During his redshirt
season at UNI, Schwab trained for the 1988 U.S. Olympic team
while also winning a bronze medal for the U.S. team at the
World Cup event in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. A knee injury and
a staph infection combined to keep Schwab off the mat for
more than a year, but Schwab finished his career with the
Panthers on a positive note as a senior, earning his second
All-America honor.
As a prep at Osage, Schwab was nearly flawless, winning
106 of 107 matches and capturing four state titles. Schwab
also earned three Junior National Freestyle titles and a
national championship in the Greco-Roman category. Schwab
was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association
Hall of Fame, Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Glen Brand
Hall of Fame.
Schwab earned a bachelor’s degree in 1990 from UNI and
a master’s degree from Minnesota in 2003. Schwab spent the
past year as a full-time student at Minnesota getting a
second emphasis in sport psychology on his existing masters.
ASST. Coach 11th Season
randy pugh
Assistant head coach Randy Pugh will enter his 11th season
as a UNI assistant. Pugh joined the UNI wrestling staff
following an outstanding athletic career at the University
of Northern Iowa.
In his time as a coach, Pugh, a former Panther All-American,
helped develop All-Americans Jarion Beets (174), Eric Hauan
(174), Kyle Hansen (184), Jason Payne (197), Sean Stender
(197) and Paul Hynek (285).
Pugh trained for international competition following his
career on the mat for the Panthers. The Columbus Junction,
Iowa native finished in fourth place at the USA World Trials
in June 2002 and competed in the Trials again in 2003. In
2002, he won the Sunkist International Open and garnered a
third-place finish at the U.S. Open. In 2003, Pugh again
achieved All-American status as he placed 8th at the U.S.
Open. He also placed third at the Dave Schultz Open in 2003.
As an athlete at UNI, Pugh finished fourth at the 2000
NCAA Tournament at 174 pounds, capping a senior season in
which he compiled a 26-4 record. He was ranked as high as
third nationally after upending top-rated Otto Olson at the
Virginia Duals.
Pugh was a state high school champion his senior year
at Columbus Junction before enrolling at the U.S. Naval
Academy, where he compiled a 16-8 record his first year.
After transferring to UNI in 1998, he went 54-9 in two
seasons for the Panthers, giving him a 70-17 career mark.
For Pugh, the biggest change from competing on the mat to
coaching his former teammates is motivating others.
“When I was on the mat, I was doing what it took to make
myself a better athlete,” Pugh said. “But as a coach, I am
more concerned with what others are doing and helping them
improve.”
Pugh’s goal for the Panthers is for the athletes to improve
every match out and continue to be good student-athletes.
Pugh graduated UNI with a degree in Industrial
Technology.
He and his wife, Krista, are the parents of two daughters,
Hayden, 4, and Presley, born February 2010.
Former NCAA champion and Janesville, Iowa, native
Tolly Thompson is beginning his ninth overall
season as Panther assistant coach.
Thompson first joined the Panther staff as the
team’s Conditioning Specialist during the 2002-03
season. He returned to UNI after two years as the
strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska. He
was a member of the Panthers’ coaching staff during
the 1999-2000 seasons as a volunteer assistant
and recently continued those duties with the team
starting last season.
“The big thing Tolly brings with him is the
winning mentality,” UNI head coach Doug Schwab
said.
“He wants to get the most out of our wrestlers
and sets very high standards, which fits in very
well with the mentality of our staff. He is a
very demanding coach, but deeply cares about each
wrestler.”
Thompson brings a wealth of international
experience to the Panther wrestling room, after
being named the winner of the 2005 John Smith
Award as the Freestyle Wrestler of the Year by
USA Wrestling. Thompson represented the United
States for the second straight season at the World
Championships after taking first-place honors at
the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials.
Thompson placed third at the 2005 World
Championships (120/264.5 lbs.) in Budapest,
Hungary, September 28, 2005. He was a previous
member of the USA wrestling Freestyle National Team.
After waiting nearly six hours after his firstround
loss, Thompson won three straight matches
in his first trip to the World Championships to
claim his first World medal. He capped his medalwinning
performance with a 1-0, 1-0 win over past
1997 World champion Kuramagomed Kuramagomedov of
Russia. Thompson’s rally to the bronze propelled the
Americans to an 8th-place finish in the freestyle
competition. Overall, the U.S. team ended the
competition with two bronze medals.
Along with taking a bronze at the 2005 World
Cup, Thompson placed second at the Cerro Pelado
Troy Garrett enters his third season with the UNI
wrestling team. This is Garrett’s fifth year at
UNI as he has spent two seasons working with the
UNI cross country and track teams.
Garrett earned his bachelor’s degree from Truman
State University in 1995 and then his master’s
from the University of Oklahoma in 1998.
In March 2004, Thompson placed fourth at the
Acropolis Tournament in Athens, Greece in the
120kd/264.5 pound weight. That April, Thompson
continued his run for an Olympic bid at the U.S.
National Championships in Las Vegas. He was able to
put together a top finish to qualify for the 2004
Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. At the trials,
Thompson rolled through competition to win the
mini-tournament which placed him in the title bout
for an automatic Olympic bid. In a best of three
series, Thompson was defeated by Kerry McCoy 5-3
and 8-0, finishing his 2004 Olympic run with a
second place finish.
In 2003, he placed second at the U.S. Open and
World Team Trials. Thompson also was the 2002
Sunkist International Open champion as well as
the New York Athletic Club champion. His hope of
qualifying for the 2000 Summer Olympics ended at
the team trials in Dallas, where he was defeated in
the semifinal round by world and national champion
Stephen Neal of Bakersfield, Calif.
During his collegiate tenure, he compiled a career
record of 157-21 from 1993 to 1997 as a Husker.
His 157 wins once placed him on the NCAA’s alltime
wins list. As a Husker, he became Nebraska’s
sixth national champion as a sophomore in 1995 by
defeating UNI’s Justin Greenlee. He finished third
at the 1996 and 1997 championships while also
