I can truthfully say that
the words “Vail/Beaver
Creek” may have never
sounded so sweet as
they did on June 3 in
Antalya, Turkey as FIS President Gian-
Franco Kasper made the announcement of
the host site for the 2015 World Alpine Ski
Championships.
While our victory certainly marked the
end of an extremely long and often arduous
road, it also represents a new beginning,
not only for the Vail Valley Foundation,
but for the Vail Valley community. It is a
tremendous opportunity for all of us to
refocus on something incredibly positive:
getting ready to welcome the world to our
homes once again in a short five years.
The Vail Valley that the world will return
to is vastly different, better, than the one
they met in 1999. Our community has, in
every way, invested in itself these last few
years and those investments will pay off in
the long run, not just for those who visit us
for the Championships in 2015, but for all of
our guests and residents leading up to that
period. We should be so happy that we live in
a community that understands that to be the
best, you must always be moving forward.
In many respects, this philosophy is
also what guides the Vail Valley Foundation
each day. We are not just about making our
events and programs the best they possibly
can be, we are about making our valley the
best place it can be.
This attitude is clearly displayed in
our ever growing education initiatives,
including our two pilot projects, Sowing
Seeds and First Notes. It’s evident in our
recent improvements made to the Gerald
R. Ford Amphitheater and it’s evident in the
breadth and quality of our annual Dance
Festival.
The Vail Valley Foundation truly mirrors
this community in the desire to never sit
back and rest on our laurels.
President’s
Message
Vail Valley Foundation President Ceil Folz and Vail Resorts Mountain Division Co-President John
Garnsey react to the announcement that Beaver Creek/Vail has been awarded the 2015 World Alpine
Ski Championships. Photo by Tom Kelly
Beaver Creek Vail 2015 Comes Up A Winner
Take the word “Candidate” out of the logo,
Beaver Creek/Vail is the host of the 2015 FIS
World Alpine Ski Championships!!!
The third time was indeed the charm
for the Vail Valley when FIS President Gian-
Franco Kasper announced to a crowd of 1,000
Congress delegates in Antalya, Turkey June 3
that Vail and Beaver Creek would host their
third World Championships.
Going into the vote announcement,
most anticipated that the voting would be
extremely close as Cortina, Italy seemed
to have gained considerable momentum in
the closing days. However, when the vote
tally was revealed, Beaver Creek/Vail was
victorious on the first ballot, garnering the
necessary 8 votes, while Cortina recorded 4
and St. Moritz, Switzerland 3.
The announcement set off a raucous
celebration within the 18-member Beaver
Creek/Vail delegation, with tears of joy
flowing freely as a wave of emotion washed
over the entire group.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be able
to represent the United States and the Vail
Valley through this victory,” explained Ceil
Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation.
“We knew from the outset that we had our
work cut out for us with three world class
candidates and only one 2015 Alpine World
Championships. We congratulate St. Moritz
and Cortina on their campaigns and it was
truly an honor to be considered along with
these great resorts. We can’t wait to get home
and share this with our community.”
A sincere thank you goes out to all of
the people that worked so hard on this bid,
as well as all people who supported and
believed that we could bring this home.
Renowned Cellist Yo-Yo Ma To Help Celebrate
Vail Valley Arts Education
When the Vail Valley’s school children first became involved in a number of arts education
opportunities, they could have never imagined that they would someday share the stage with
one of the world’s foremost classical performers.
That dream will come true on Saturday, June 26, as the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and
the Vail Valley Foundation have enlisted the help of none other than world renowned cellist
Yo-Yo Ma to help celebrate the arts with the children of the First Notes, Celebrate the Beat
and Bravo! Young Composers programs at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail. Dubbed
“Imagination Celebration: Adventures in the Arts”, the free festivities are scheduled to run
from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Imagination Celebration will feature individual performances by third through fifth graders
of Celebrate the Beat, the second grade First Notes orchestra and Bravo! Young Composers
Ben West and Jeremiah Johnston.
Yo-Yo Ma and Bravo! Artistic Director Eugenia Zukerman are slated to accompany West and
Johnston on their original piece, while Mr. Ma will team with local pianist Katherine Bellino
for a number before joining Vail International Dance Festival director Damian Woetzel and
the Celebrate the Beat dancers for the finale.
2010 Teva Mountain Games Highlights
Stand Up Paddling Debut and
U.S. World Cup Climbing Win
The big island of Hawaii came to the Vail
Valley and the U.S. climbed to the top step of
the World Cup bouldering podium as the 2010
Teva Mountain Games took Vail by storm
June 3-6.
Record crowds combined with a record
number of participants to celebrate the
nation’s largest celebration of adventure
sports, lifestyle and music as top professional
and amateur athletes from around the globe
descended on Vail’s mountains and rivers.
River and ocean lifestyles melded for the
first time at the Teva Mountain Games as the
sport of Stand Up Paddling made its debut on
Gore Creek in the Eddie Bauer/First Ascent
SUP Surf Sprint, presented by C4 Waterman.
Top honors in the inaugural event went to
16-year-old rising SUP star Noa Ginella from
the north shore of Oahu who had never
paddled in whitewater, let alone ever been
to Colorado prior to his arrival for the Teva
Mountain Games.
En route to the win, the teen bested the
two leading whitewater paddlers, Dan Gavere
and Charlie MacArthur. Also in the SUP field
was U.S. Ski Team downhiller Steven Nyman,
who finished in 11th position.
American Daniel Woods made all the right
moves on Saturday, recording two tops and
two very near completions, to earn the men’s
gold medal at the IFSC Bouldering World
Cup Bouldering competition, presented
by Pyramide. Woods, who finished in the
runner-up spot at the Teva Mountain Games
a year ago, bested Japan’s Tsukuru Hori and
Austria’s Kilian Fischhuber for the victory,
bringing the large and enthusiastic crowd to
its feet when he held the dyno on problem 4
and very nearly hit the finishing jug.
The environmentally-friendly Teva Mountain
Games marked the second year that the
Vail Valley Foundation has served as organizational
hosts to approximately 3,000 outdoor
athletes, along with an estimated 40,000 spectators
in the Vail Valley’s kickoff to summer.
The 2010 competition featured eight sports
and 24 individual disciplines. In addition to
Stand Up Paddling and World Cup Bouldering,
sports include kayaking, rafting, mountain
biking, road cycling, amateur climbing, fly
fishing, trail running and a half marathon.
Additional events include the Outdoor
Reels film series, the Mountain Click photo
competition, the Gear Town interactive expo
area, the DockDog canine competitions, the
Mountains of Music free concerts and the
Teva Blackout Party.
The Vail International Dance Festival returns
all set in one breathtaking venue.
The 2010 Festival highlights will include
renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky’s
presentation of a world premiere as part
of the International Evenings of Dance on
August 6 and 7, featuring New York City
Ballet star, Wendy Whelan. The new ballet
will be set to music by Luigi Boccherini, and
Whelan’s costume will be designed by Tony
Award winning costume designer William
Ivey Long.
Other “firsts” will include the world
premiere of Tango sensations Natalia Hills
and Gabriel Missé’s new show Romper el
Piso; the Festival’s first Artist-in-Residence,
acclaimed choreographer and dancer Larry
Keigwin, who will premiere a new work
Larry Keigwin
on the International Evenings of Dance
and the Vail debut of BeijingDance / LDTX,
who will present a stunning repertoire of
contemporary dance, along with a world
premiere.
The two-week Festival also features the
return of Pacific Northwest Ballet for a weeklong
residency and two evenings of varied
repertoire; a one-night-only appearance
by the King of Tap, Savion Glover; and
International Evenings of Dance
Paul Taylor Dance Company, who will
present masterpieces in celebration of
the groundbreaking choreographer’s 8‚th
birthday.
“This season celebrates the magnificent
diversity and creative brilliance of dance”
offered Damian Woetzel, now in his fourth
year as Artistic Director of the twenty-twoyear-old
Dance Festival. “With BeijingDance
/ LDTX’s innovative choreography and
movement, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s superb
stagings of Balanchine masterpieces, Savion
Glover’s incomparable tap dancing and
Natalia Hills and Gabriel Missé’s gorgeous
Tango, audience members will have the
opportunity to experience a spectacular
range of dance surrounded by the natural
beauty of the Rocky Mountains at the Ford
Amphitheater in Vail.”
VVF’s Sowing Seeds
Program “Sprouts”
New Pilot Program
When the Vail Valley Foundation launched
its new Sowing Seeds program at Brush
Creek Elementary School in Eagle in the
fall, there was no telling what would grow,
both literally and figuratively. Ten months
A young gardener from Brush Creek
Elementary School tends to her plants.
later, the program has taken root and has
already “sprouted” a new initiative.
Following a May visit to the Sowing
Seeds greenhouse, located behind the
school, the Eagle County Schools Director
of Nutritional Services, Ray Edel, decided
that Brush Creek would serve as a pilot
site for a “Food From Scratch” cafeteria
program. Essentially, this means that no
food served to students in the cafeteria
may be processed and that a vegetable and
fruit bar will be added to the daily menu.
“This is tremendous news,” explained
Jean McSpadden, Vail Valley Foundation
Director of Education. “Not only is
Sowing Seeds connecting children with
their environment and helping them
make smart food choices, but it is now
beginning to have the ‘big picture’ impact
that we had hoped for.”
Vegetables grown in the Sowing Seeds
greenhouse are already being integrated
into the Brush Creek cafeteria and
students are saving their lunch scraps
to add to the composting stations in the
greenhouse.
Created in conjunction with Chef Kelly
Liken of Restaurant Kelly Liken, the pilot
program involves a greenhouse project
where students not only plant and care
for their own gardens, but also actually
sell their produce at local farmer’s
markets during the summer.
