Upholding Ethical Standards
A CRUCIAL IMPERATIVE FOR
SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS SUCCESS
There is a saying in the business world,
“Ethics is knowing the difference
between what you have a right to do and
what is right to do”
In the late 1980s, energy drinks were becoming vastly popular among nightclubs and
partygoers. This was one of the issues faced by Red Bull during the early founding of their
business; the market for energy drinks was becoming increasingly popular with alternatives.
How could Red Bull stand out from the crowd? Well with a truly unorthodox approach.
Picture this:
London’s rubbish bins are filled with empty cans of Red
Bull, free samples being given to nightclub DJs, and
insurmountable empty cans left lying outside of clubs.
The goal: To create an illusion of popularity. With so
many empty Red Bull cans floating around, people would
automatically assume that Red Bull was THE energy drink
of choice.
However, despite the significant popularity of this
guerrilla marketing tactic, many considered it unethical
due to the aftermath it left in its wake. The marketing
campaign resulted in severe environmental pollution
and uncleanliness in the surrounding areas, such as
neighborhoods and city walks.
In the dynamic landscape of any industry, the success of a
business is measured not solely by profit margins and
market share. Like proper financial management and
marketing, ethics has become an integral business
function, with shareholders and consumers recognizing
that integrity and responsibility are indispensable to
long-term success.
But why? In this section, we will explore the reasons why business ethics is crucial for firms
and future business professionals.

II. Business Division
Some of the key reasons why ethical standards are important include:
1. Trust
Ethical business practices are instrumental in building trust among
customers, employees, and stakeholders. When a company operates with
integrity and transparency, it fosters a sense of trust that is essential for
sustainable relationships.
2. Reputation
Maintaining a positive reputation is crucial for overall business success.
Ethical conduct contributes significantly to upholding a positive image in
the marketplace, thereby help increased customer loyalty and,
consequently, greater profitability
3. Risk
Adherence to ethical standards helps in risk reduction, protecting
businesses from potential legal and financial consequences associated
with unethical behavior.
4. Talent
Ethical business practices are instrumental in attracting and retaining top
talent. Employees are more inclined to work for companies that prioritize
integrity, creating a positive work environment and contributing to the
overall success of the organization.
Ensuring adherence to ethical standards stands as a fundamental necessity for achieving
lasting success in business. The cultivation of ethical business practices plays a pivotal role
in establishing trust among customers, employees, and stakeholders.
This trust, in turn, contributes to maintaining a positive reputation within the marketplace,
mitigating risks associated with unethical behavior. Furthermore, the commitment to ethical
standards serves as a magnet for attracting and retaining top talent, fostering a work
environment that values integrity.
Embracing ethical business practices not only generates long-term value for companies but
also plays a vital role in contributing to a more sustainable and responsible future.

Animal Welfare
Animals have a crucial role in our lives! They contribute to ecological
balance, our well-being, and the overall health of the planet Earth!
For example, they provide
companionship and emotional support to
humans, which may help individuals cope
with stress, anxiety, and various health
conditions.
However, the well-being of animals,
encompassing their physical and mental
health, should also be considered by
humans!
The key aspects of animal welfare include
but are not limited to, their basic needs,
freedom from discomfort and fear,
proper husbandry, as well as the liberty
to express normal behavior.
We, humans, are often unaware of the well-being of animals around us.
Many of them are exploited for our entertainment and they suffer from
our negligence and cruel behavior.
1. In Bali alone, there are
500,000 stray dogs and up to
250 million stray cats in
Indonesia.
2. By 2022, out of the 5,500 videos
that were aired worldwide, the
research found that at least 1,626
of them featured animal abuse in
Indonesia.
Did you know?
3. Animal protection organizations claim that every year, hundreds of
thousands of stray and pet dogs are slaughtered mercilessly for
consumption in Indonesia's dog meat trade.

Animal Welfare
4. Animal abuse affects not only stray animals but also
endangered species.
5. Several zoos have been
investigated for alleged abuse of
endangered animals such as
Sumatran tigers, and cases of abuse
towards Sumatran langurs have
been reported in Indonesia. If
these cases keep happening, it may
lead to the extinction of
endangered species in our country.
Therefore, as humans, we must realize and be responsible with
our own actions. We can be a responsible pet owner by
knowing and fulfilling the needs of the pet.
Other than that, if you witness animal abuse around you, you
can stop it or seek help from other people around or report it
to the responsible authorities. We must properly consider the
well-being of animals, also their physical and mental health.
Let’s protect all of the animals together from abuse that can
lead to extinction!

VI. SCi Highlight
To celebrate Animal Welfare Day, SCi’s Community Outreach
Division, in collaboration with the Communications Division, held a
new online campaign that ran across 9–13 October 2023.
This time around,
we decided to give
the spotlight to
animal welfare,
which is included as
the 15th goal listed
in the UN’s SDGs,
which is “Life on
Land”. A total of 165
campaigners signed
up for and partook
in this campaign.
Throughout the campaign, campaigners were tasked to post animal
welfare-related contents on Instagram to promote the good handling of
animals living around us. For instance, campaigners posted an
Instagram feed post with the theme “Human Negligence Towards
Animals” as well as a brief microblog or infographic with the theme
“Endangered Animals”. Not only that, campaigners also had the chance
to showcase and gain information regarding animal welfare through
fun activities like bingo and crossword puzzles.

Lastly, not only did this campaign fulfill its aim in sharing awareness,
but we also managed to collect funds through our offline business
selling and donations in the form of money or animal-related items. All
profits and donations collected during our campaign period were
donated to Pejaten Shelter, a nonprofit organization based in South.
Jakarta. This shelter is known to foster hundreds of stray animals,
including dogs, cats, and monkeys, and prioritizes caring for their
health and wellbeing. Despite the short duration of our campaign, we
hope that all of us will continue to support and take good care of all the
animals we meet. Thank you for your participation during our campaign
and watch out for future campaigns from our very own Community
Outreach Division!

Week 2023: Le Trône
Starting off strong, SCi’s Welfare Division had successfully organized
their first big event in the 2023/2024 cabinet with Sports Week
2023! As we all know, Sports Week is i3L’s annual event that aims to
develop sportive mindsets and active physiques within the i3L
family. This year’s theme “Le Trône”, French for “the throne”,
narrates the hopes of our players to fight for the kingdom and sit on
its coveted throne. In addition to the event, this year, Sports Week
was held in collaboration with Dies Natalis, a celebratory event of
i3L’s 10th Anniversary.

Week 2023: Le Trône
Sports Week was held on 8-10 November, not long
after our midterm exam ended, which is a perfect
time to relieve stress and have fun. Competitions
ranged from physical sports, such as basketball,
billiards, and table tennis, and also electronic sports
(esports), consisting of Mobile Legends and Tekken,
streamed online on SCi’s Youtube channel. The
basketball court was filled with cheers in support of
the audience’s favorite teams, as well as bustles and
laughs of joy across the many booths that sold
snacks, beverages, and even toys! Not only that, the
indoor billiards, table tennis, and esports
competitions were also intense, with fierce players
going all out to take the win. To commemorate the
days of battle and victory, a photobooth area was
also prepared for students to take memorable
pictures, complete with a throne that anyone could
sit on. We truly hope that Sports Week 2023
brought smiles and happiness to you all. See you in
our next one!
