Grove City veteran
marks a milestone
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
When Army private Robert ‘Bob’ Hammel was a teenager, he
was told by his superiors at the Ordnance Proving Ground in
Aberdeen, Md., that he was not likely to survive his assignment
on the bomb disposal unit during World War II.
More than 80 years later, dozens of individuals from across
the state and around the country came together for a special
Veterans Day ceremony to recognize his bravery and service during
the prolonged conflict that saw more than 75 million casualties.
They were also there to help him celebrate his 100th birthday.
“I am just thrilled to death to be able to experience this occasion,”
he said with a grin.
Hammel, a long-time resident of Grove City, does not usually
like it when people make a fuss over him.
“He is a very humble man, never wanting the attention to be
on him,” said his daughter, Janice Hammel. “In fact, me and my
brothers were not even sure that he would want us to throw him
a party but we overrode those thoughts because we felt that he
deserved to be celebrated.
“We wanted him to know that he has been a blessing to us and
we wanted to show him how much he is loved and how much he
has meant to this family and to just about everyone who has ever
met him.”
He said while looking around the room that was filled with
friends and his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great grandchildren that he was glad they decided to make
a fuss.
“There is nothing I love more than my family,” he said. “To see
them all here together means the world to me.”
Robert Samuel Hammel, or ‘Bob’ as he prefers to be called,
was born on Nov. 30 1923 just outside of Wheeling, W. Va. It was
there that he discovered his passion for currents and his desire to
become an electrician.
“I was always playing with batteries and switches, trying to
build stuff so I could get the electric working,” he said. “It probably
wasn’t always safe to do but it was what I enjoyed the most.”
After his mother’s death at the age of 10, the Hammel family
moved to Columbus so his engineer father could look for work in
On Nov. 11, dozens of family members, friends, and acquaintances
of Bob Hammel traveled throughout the state and
across the country to join together in celebration as the longtime
Grove City resident turned 100. In addition to recognizing
his life and accomplishments, he was also honored by the
American Legion Paschall Post 641 and the American Legion
Don Gentile Post 532 for his service during World War II as a
bomb disposal technician. Pictured here with Retired Army Sgt.
City considers license
plate photo program
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
Grove City Council is considering legislation
that would give the division of police
a new crime-fighting tool.
On Nov. 20, the council is scheduled to
vote on an ordinance that would appropriate
$150,429 from drug law enforcement
fund to contract with Flock Safety, which
uses license plate reader technology to collect
visual evidence across the city that
would help law enforcement solve and prevent
crime. According to the legislation,
the agreement will provide a connected
platform for license plate readers with live
video and audio detection integrated with
the city’s computer-aided dispatch system.
“We hope to see a reduction in crime
and keep citizens safe,” said Lt. Justin
Gallo, with the Grove City Division of
Police.
Flock Safety created a public operating
system to enable neighborhoods, businesses,
and law enforcement to work together
to collect situational evidence across the
city.
According to Gallo, cameras would be
placed throughout the city, especially in
high-traffic areas. These cameras take pictures
of vehicles and license plates. This
could be helpful for example, if a car is
stolen in Columbus. That vehicle information
is entered into a national database. If
that car comes into Grove City, the Flock
System would recognize it as a stolen vehicle
and then alert police.
“Often those who steal a car will use
that vehicle to commit more crime,” said
Gallo. “This system allows us to put a
response together before they commit
more crime in our city.”
The lieutenant said this system helped
police apprehend a suspect that assaulted
two Grove City officers. Last year, two offi-
the industrial area. It was here that he discovered his
passion for Della Worley and his desire to become her
husband.
“She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen,” he
recalled of the brunette with hazel eyes. “She had a
great smile, a great shape, and she had the biggest
heart.”
World War II broke out during their courtship and
the two married during his senior year so they could
“spend more time together” before he was sent to basic
training. It was there that the Army discovered his
aptitude for mathematics and mechanics and he was
reassigned to the bomb disposal unit.
When he arrived at the Ordnance Proving Ground
in 1943, he was told the percentage of Allied service
members assigned to these units had a mortality rate
of 80 percent. He was warned not to make plans for the
future.
Hammel said he thought that recommendation was
a bit absurd.
“We all wanted to think of our future,” he said. “We
all wanted to live.”
He said he came to realize that it was sound advice
at the time, especially as his unit drove to sites across
the east coast to decommission unexploded and possibly
booby-trapped ordnance shipped from overseas.
“You just cried and prayed and kept your mind free
of your wife, your family, your hope for the future,” he
said.
Hammel said by the grace of God he and his buddies
defied the odds.
Bob Hammel takes singer Betty Douglas Londergan
for a spin around the floor at the Eagle Pavilion at
Fryer Park. The song that was playing during their
dance number was “Dearly Beloved” by Dinah
Shore. It was the favored dance song by Bob and his
late wife, Della.
“My unit never missed a mark,” he said proudly.
“Every bomb was recovered and defused.”
After he was discharged from the military,
Sgt. Hammel was finally able to focus
on a future that included three children and
the arrival of what seems like hundreds of
descendants.
“We have too many to count accurately
at this time,” quipped son Greg Hammel.
Although Bob was a tireless worker — his
health forced him to retire as a supervisor
of the Westinghouse Manufacturing Plant
in the 1980s where his claim to fame was
bringing the company into federal compliance
by removing unclean emissions — he
was also a tireless husband, father and
grandfather.
“He worked so much but he was always
there for us, always allowing us to try new
things, giving us grace when we failed and
encouraging us every step of the way,” said
Janice. “I can’t begin to fully list all the
things he has done for what, what he has
meant to us, and what he continues to mean
to us.”
When reflecting upon his life thus far,
Bob said he does not think he would be the
person he is today without his family by his
side.
“They are everything,” he said. “I think
they are the reason we live.”
He added that family can even be the
reason why someone who is nearing the
century mark can still dream of the future.
“I feel blessed to be able to wake up and
go about my day,” he said, “but I am also
excited because in another hundred years I
will be in my Della’s arms and we will be
surrounded by our loved ones.
“There we will live forever.”

Crime Prevention Tips:
Consider investing in an anti-theft device
for your vehicle or an alarm. Especially
if you own a vehicle that is
commonly stolen. Park in well-lit
areas, close to security surveillance if
possible. Remove your valuables.
Close your windows and lock the
doors. Do not leave keys in the car.
Never leave your vehicle while it is
Earl is a senior
sweetie with eight
years of experience
in cuddles and taking
hearty naps. He loves
going for walks and
like to take his time
while sidewalk perusing,
watching people
walk by and smelling
the pleasant air. After
a good walk, he will look to take a snooze. Earl
is the gentlest couch potato you’ll ever meet.
Adopt this gentle boy from the Franklin
County shelter.
Rose is a 10-year-old
who could be your
perfect match if you
like the easy life. She
is a relaxed, laid back
kind of dog who
enjoys long naps,
watching movies,
curling up on laps,
and walking very
short distances from
the couch to the food bowl and back. Stop by
the county shelter to meet sweet Rose.
Coats for the kids
www.columbusmessenger.com
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
Last week, the students at Finland Elementary and Highland Park Elementary went
home with new winter gear as their schools were selected to participate in Coat Day
Columbus, a local and national initiative that supplies thousands of children with stylish
and warm coats at no cost to their families. The jackets were manufactured by the
national nonprofit organization Operation Warm while the coats were purchased and
donated to the area schools by the local nonprofit organization Bonzy Charities and
their community partner, Germain of Columbus. Employees of the company served as
the personal shoppers and the fitting guides for the more than 800 South-Western City
School students who received new coats just in time for the turn of the weather. Evan
Debo, the executive director of communications for SWCS, said the district was fortunate
to have such “philanthropic and generous” donors who are committed to making
an impact on the lives of their students. Pictured here (right) demonstrating how finding
the perfect coat had a positive impact on their day is fourth grader Juan Rangel
Ramirez and his personal shopper Kevin Lunsford, an account executive at Germain
Insurance Company. Rangel Ramirez said he had a great time trying on all the different
coats and that he looked forward to showing off his “cool blue jacket” this winter.
Sonya Muska, a fourth grade
student at Highland Park,
looks through the pile of
coats, trying to find the perfect
one. Although she says
she liked the variety of colors
and patterns that were presented
to her, she ultimately
chose a sharp black coat
because it came in a slightly
bigger size. “I like big coats,”
she said. “You can tuck yourself
into them better when
you get cold.”
Ohio House
Nonvoting
Session
A little-known anecdote about the Ohio
House of Representatives is that, during each
General Assembly (the two-year term of the
Legislature), the House must convene at least
once a week—even during a recess or a holiday
period. As a result, if the House is not
scheduled to meet as an entire body, a small
subset of members must convene in a nonvoting
or “shadow” session.
The agenda for the nonvoting session consists
of noncontroversial business such as first readings
of proposed bills (by title only and so they
become eligible for assignment to and consideration
by one of the House standing committees),
nonpolicy resolutions (congratulatory
kudos for noteworthy achievements in respective
House members’ districts), communications
from the Ohio Senate, and
announcements of appointments of members
and the public to standing House committees
and state-mandated councils. All votes taken
are procedural ones with no objections. The
entire meeting lasts only about five to ten
minutes and is scripted for participating
House members by the House Clerk’s office
staff.
Two members from the majority party (Republican,
currently) are required to complete
the agenda. One acts as temporary Speaker
of the House; the other makes the procedural
motions. The motioning member makes the
scripted motions; the temporary Speaker declares
acceptance without objection. Living
relatively close to the State House, I get called
on frequently for this activity—and have
played each role at various times.
The business accomplished in the shadow sessions
serves to speed the work of the House
and minimizes the time spent on process-related
items when we meet as an entire body,
saving time then for essential votes and deliberation
on the true business of the day. If the
nonvoting sessions are missed, the House
technically would have to adjourn for the biennium.
At that point, only Governor DeWine
then could call us back into session, which
would prove to be an unnecessary use of his
time and attention.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the
Ohio House of Representatives, which consists of
parts of West, Southwest, and South Columbus,
Grove City, Urbancrest, and portions of Franklin
and Jackson Townships. He reports regularly on
his activities in this position and his campaign
has paid for this communication with you.)
“Quiz Lady” will
have viewers laughing
The Reel Deal
By Dedra Cordle
If you have been in search of a good laugh — and honestly, who
hasn’t been on that quest these days? — you might be surprised to
hear that some pretty decent comedies have been released this
year. “Quiz Lady’ is the latest comedy that could potentially make
you laugh and smile with its silly premise. With a plot that
revolves around two estranged sisters who team up after a
beloved canine companion is held for ransom because of their
flighty mother, this film takes a softer approach in the naughty
department and goes a bit harder on the heartfelt. Although it
may not elicit as many laugh-out-loud moments because it is more
subdued than other 2023 comedic offerings, its overall sweetness
could bring forth those elusive feelings of joy throughout its 95
minute running time.
In the Jessica Yu directed film that is now streaming on Hulu,
Awkwafina and Sandra Oh work against type by playing Anne
and Jenny, respectively, two sisters who could not be more opposite.
As the youngest, Anne is an extreme introvert, preferring to
spend all of her time outside of work alone on the couch, indulging
in bags of Smartfood popcorn and watching her favorite game
show, “Can’t Stop the Quiz” with her adorable and aging pug, Mr.
Linguine (played by Crosby Cookie), by her side. As the oldest,
Jenny is an extreme extrovert, preferring to spend all of her time
amongst new groups of people as she tries to find the perfect job,
the perfect passion, and the perfect life that has always eluded
her.
Since the sisters are roughly 10 years apart in age, they have
never been particularly close, going long stretches of time without
speaking to one another unless Jenny needs to borrow money
from her steady sister or has to find a place to crash for the night
— or the week or the month. While annoyed at having to be a bank
or a hotel for her sister, Anne always gives her what she needs
because it is the fastest way to get Jenny out of her life.
While at work one day, Anne receives a call from the nursing
facility where their mother resides, informing her that her mother
is “gone.” To be clear, gone does not mean dead. It just means that
she flew off to Macau with her new boyfriend and that one of her
daughters has to come to the facility to clean out her room because
she is permanently banned from the premises.
It is this news that brings Jenny back into her orbit. At first,
Anne thinks they will only have to interact for a few days as they
figure out what to do with their wayward mother. But then the
sisters learn that the matriarch owes a local gangster $80,000 and
it is now up to them to pay him back. Having no way to repay the
debt, the gangster takes Mr. Linguine for ransom and allows the
sisters a “two-week grace period” to cough up the dough or else
something bad might happen to the aging pug.
This action prompts Jenny to suggest that Anne try out for
“Can’t Stop the Quiz” because she is quite skilled at trivia — a real
genius at it, even. Despite Anne’s initial reluctance, the introvert
who doesn’t like to be looked at finds herself faced with no other
choice. As the two go on a road trip to the audition, they begin to
bond amongst their sisterly squabbling, finding common ground
and discovering a new way to look at each other — and themselves.
The script, written by Jen D’Angelo, could use a bit more consistency
when it comes to the laughs, but the physical comedy of
and the chemistry between Awkwafina and Oh more than make
up for the lack. The actresses make Anne and Jenny feel like real
sisters who have drifted apart: You can feel the pain and hurt in
the arguments they have, and you can also feel the hope and the
love they have for each other. On paper, they seem like an oddball
duo who wouldn’t quite work together, but on the screen they are
fun and dynamic, playing so well off of each other that it makes
this movie a delight to watch. Grade: B+
