A message to the pupils,

The Annual Art Exhibition and the catalogue that accompanies it, bring to a conclusion a period of study at either A-level or GCSE.

It marks a fitting end to a sustained period of study and offers a chance to draw breath and to take time to reflect on what has

been achieved.

Both courses offer pupils the opportunity to develop ideas and to explore media and techniques freely, safe in the knowledge

that making mistakes and changing direction at a mid-point are part of the learning process and often lead to more accomplished

resolved work. Of course, it would be all too easy to adopt a rather formulaic approach, however, the Department is firmly set

against this, and by contrast seeks to develop an individual response. Furthermore, the development of a contextual understanding

to support the practical work is encouraged, as we believe that being able to negotiate the broader relevance of Art in today’s

society is important. Evidence of this is contained herein, in work that spans traditional themes such as the still life, portraiture,

movement and architecture, along with more unusual and sometimes challenging subject matter.

Among the range of media and techniques employed in addition to painting and sculpture, are drypoint and lino prints, collagraphs,

silk painting, ceramics, 3D relief, monotypes and photography. At the core, however, is evidence of an ability to record observations

in visual form, in other words the ability to draw, and it is drawing that is at the root of all we do.

In conclusion, I want to congratulate you for your willingness to engage with the subject over the two years of the course, and for

the determination and good humour shown when faced with the challenges associated with all creative endeavours. I hope you

enjoy looking through this catalogue now, and in years to come; you should take great pride in seeing what you have produced.

Finally, my colleagues in the Department join me in thanking you all for helping to make the Art Department such a fantastic

environment in which to teach.

Richard Davies, Becci Upton, Katy Gate, Thekla Kampelmann, Michelle Brooks and James Dixon.

I would like to congratulate all of the pupils for

producing such an excellent collection of work.

The standard is incredibly high and the skill,

imagination and determination of the pupils

shine through. I am most grateful to all the

Art Department staff for teaching, advising and

inspiring our talented pupils.

Dr Paul Owen.

Head

The Art Department is a dynamic and important

part of Stockport Grammar School and the 2023

Art and Design Exhibition provides an excellent

opportunity to enjoy and admire the impressive

and varied art work of the pupils of the School.

The students and staff of the Art Department

have put a great deal of time and effort into

preparing the exhibition and I would like to take

the opportunity to thank them for this and to

congratulate them on the results of their efforts.

Christopher Dunn.

Chair of Governors

When Mrs Upton lets me in to have a

sneak preview of the Summer Show I

always feel incredibly privileged, as often

pupils are still finalising their displays and

it gives the chance to interact with both

the artists and their work. Listening to our

pupils reflect on their art with a critical

and discursive mind-set is a door left ajar

into their thoughts; a rare opportunity.

This year’s work is a richly vibrant and

triumphant culmination of a journey

involving hours spent filling up sketchbooks

with observations, experiments and artist

research and making numerous other

supporting works. The variety here is

astonishing and you will derive as much

pleasure from examining the careful

precision of pencil drawings as revelling in

the physicality of the 3D making process,

much as I imagine our Artists did. They

are a cohort of enquiring, passionate

individuals who use art as an investigative

tool for powerful personal expression,

as they explore and examine the world

around them. I congratulate our pupils

on their wonderful work and thank them,

and their teachers, for sharing their talent

and hard work with us.

Nurtured passionately by the brilliant SGS

Art Department.

Mrs J Fitzgerald, Head of Middle School.

GCSE Art pupils have spent a lot of time

and effort in completing their portfolio of

work and the standard is clearly very high.

Their commitment to their studies and the

attention to detail in the work is incredible.

It is great to see such talent in the year

group and I applaud the whole range of

design and artistic skills on display.

Mr N Clarke, Head of Fifth Year.

It is marvellous and truly inspiring to

have the chance to see and celebrate

the wonderful range of creations that

form this year’s body of work for GCSE

and A Level assessment. I am sure that

each contributor will value hugely the

opportunity to share their work with

their friends, family and the wider school

community. As a historian, it is interesting

to me to try and work out the inspiration

behind these often very personal pieces,

with each in their own way telling a very

personal story.

It is amazing, and very much to their

credit and that of their teachers, that the

pupils have produced work of such a high

standard and they should be very proud

in displaying their work, in the exhibition

and also in the catalogue.

Well done to all of this year’s A Level and

GCSE exhibitors!

Mr D.J. Stone, Head of Sixth Form.

Dear Upper 6th Artists, I have spent

the last two years watching you work

extremely hard to achieve your Art

and Textiles A Levels. I am in awe at

the creative prowess you possess; the

patience with which you have worked

and the commitment and dedication over

hours and hours to produce pieces which

reflect your abilities and artistic intentions

is staggering.

Looking through this catalogue I am

impressed by your efforts and proud of

your final achievements and have enjoyed

seeing your final pieces on the walls

around School. You have all produced

a standard of work which is out of this

world.

You are truly very talented and I am very

proud of each and every one of you. Very

well done to you all.

Mrs Katrina Britton, Head of Upper Sixth
