In the Music, Arts, and Design (MAD) department,

we celebrate the diversity of thinking and creativity

of our faculty and students. Whether it is students

building a tiny house, designing interiors, building

a 3D model, creating art work, music recitals, or the

graphic arts, we strive to challenge our students

to think differently and critically. The collaborative

culture allows us to cross over disciplines and

create a vibrant community of learners who will

impact and change their communities through

their creativity and design.

We started AVANTART Magazine as a way to document

and celebrate our students’ hard work. As visual designers

and image makers, we like to “see” things come to life and

we encourage students to put their work out in the world

with confidence. Being published can seem like something

unattainable —we want to show our students that nothing

is out of reach. AVANTART exposes students to the “art” of

the submission process, the excitement of seeing their work

published and adds a line to their resume. This publication

is also a semester’s work for a small group of students that

chose to explore publication and layout. We play a big part

in the creation of the magazine, but the design students are

the creators of each piece.

We hope AVANTART serves to inspire current students as

well as future students. We seek to make the interaction with

AVANTART one of curiosity, community and connection.

An interview

with David Wiatrolik

Music Program Lead, Front Range Community College

“Collaborating with community at Front Range is a huge

blessing. I can remember spending tons of time in the

recording booth there, appreciating everything the program

has to offer.

Being an engineer has taught me several things, firstly that my

problems are always somewhere in between my headphones.

Secondly, I like mixing music and film. I love the fresh and

inspiring options that spatial and surround sound offer to music,

and I am forever and always blown-away that I can spend

time with engineers doing what we believe in, with people who

believe in our success and contribution.”

What makes your classes unique?

There’s sort of a renaissance happening right now in music

education. For a half century or more most colleges offer

music degrees based on the study of either jazz or Western

classical music. All that seems to be changing and FRCC

has been leading the way as one of the first colleges in

Northern Colorado to offer degrees and certificates in

Recording Arts and Technology (RAT) in addition to our

associate in music degree. I was lucky enough to start

teaching here as the RAT program was just beginning

and I had the opportunity to be a part of building and

shaping the curriculum.

I believe what makes my courses unique is that they are

taught heavily through hands-on projects and there is

a strong sense of community within each class cohort

where students support and learn from one other. This is

possible by creating a classroom culture that embraces

the diversity of musical styles and allows for creativity and

self-expression. As the instructor, I contribute and take part

in these activities in an effort to break that teacher/student

barrier. The class periods seem to fly by. It’s pretty magical

seeing how relationships and collaborations form over the

course of the semester!

What is your favorite part

about working with students?

Working with students keeps me open to learning new

things and helps me stay humble. As a teacher I think

it’s easy to sit back and recycle the same information

and curriculum year after year. But, music and culture

changes constantly and you can easily lose touch and

that makes it harder for you and your curriculum to

connect with students. I’m always learning about new

artists, bands, discovering new software tools and

techniques from my students.

I often find myself questioning the truths and habits that

I’ve held onto for years. I’ve really grown to enjoy that part

of teaching and settle into being a facilitator of learning

rather than a perceived content and process expert. I

now see teaching and learning is this fluid and reciprocal

process where instructors teach and learn, as do the

students and that takes the weight off you as the instructor.

It’s pretty fun to build that into the curriculum and then just

hang out, facilitate and watch it all unfold.

What new implementation strategies

do you have to grow your program?

We are really putting effort into growing out Music and

Recording Arts Technology (MRAT) program at FRCC.

Generally, I see an under-representation of popular music

styles in college music education. I personally struggled

with the disconnects between the culture and music I

was passionate about, and what we studied in many of

my college music classes. I’ve played music with a lot of

people that had no interest in perusing music in school

because they didn’t fit into the classical or jazz boxes. I

think we can increase enrollment and build our program

and capture those students by offering rigorous and

relevant music curriculum that doesn’t have cultural or

stylistic preference. Many of our music instructors at FRCC

incorporate popular music and jazz into music theory and

history classes. We are also launching a Popular Music Band

Ensemble and a Hip Hop/ DJ Ensemble course this coming

fall, as well as additional courses in Film Scoring / Sounds

Design, and Post-production / Audio Mastering. I’m really

excited about what’s coming! We’re listening to what our

students want and being in-line with industry needs.

Where’s your favorite local jam session spot?

I’m embarrassed to say it, but I haven’t been to a jam

session for a long time. I like jamming and rehearsing with

folks I play in bands with at my home studio. But outside of

rehearsals, gigs and my personal practice time, I’m kind of

maxed out with free time these days.

12 2023 | AVANTART FRCCMGD.COM | 2023 13

What inspired you to become

an instructor/ musician?

The earliest desire to play an instrument that I remember

having was definitely the guitar. My dad had this old

electric guitar that didn’t have any strings sitting in a closet.

I was totally enamored by it and would play air guitar on

the invisible strings, but I don’t think my parents were stoked

on the idea of me playing electric guitar. So, I ended up

playing trumpet in grade school joining the school band.

Although I stayed with trumpet all the way into college

doing the jazz big band thing, in junior high school I bought

my first electric guitar from a friend for $65 and began

teaching myself to play. Freshman year in high school I

joined my first “rock band”.

We were all pretty serious for high schoolers and recorded

an album on cassette tape, played a lot of shows often

opening for regional touring punk and ska bands. It was

the mid 1990’s, so Ska & Punk music and skateboarding

was our jam. That first band during the angsty teenage

years really planted the seed for what I do today. As far

as teaching goes, I kind of stumbled into that. I needed a

job in college and started teaching private guitar lessons

at the local music store. I really enjoyed teaching and

felt I had a natural disposition for it. So, for most of my 20’s

and 30’s I was a career college student, playing in bands,

studying music, teaching music. Naturally, after all that I

found myself teaching music in college.

What’s your favorite class project?

I’d have to say my favorite class project is the group

song project in my Computer Music Applications class. It

came about in a very impulsive / chance way. I was in

front of class introducing our next song production project

and for some reason I decided it was too much like the

last assignment. I said: “what do you all think about this:

we write, produce, record and mix an original song as

a class?” They were into it! So, I helped guide the class

through writing lyrics, creating a melody from those lyrics,

and building the chord progression and settling on a song

form. After some playing around, we went into the studio

to record it. Everyone contributed something different.

The students got the raw audio tracks and produced their

own versions of the song. It was a lot of fun and now that’s

formally one of our class projects.

14 2023 | AVANTART

What about your personal musical repertoire

do students find most interesting?

So, lol…I make these short music videos of GoPro footage

from snowboarding and mountain biking trips I’ve done

with friends and post them to my social media accounts.

It’s kind of fun...silly little pet project I’ve been doing it for

years. It’s a way of working out and dialing in my creative

process muscles. I’ll bust out a 1-2 minute video edit and

compose original music in a couple hours and quickly post

it. Sometimes it’s rap, EDM, sometimes pop, or rock. It’s

often kind of weird and all over the place and sometimes

I’ll share it with my students as we listen to their song

projects and they get a kick out of it.

How do you share your entrepreneurial endeavors

with your student?

From time to time I’ll share some anecdotal stories and

things I’ve learned in my personal journey of piecing

together a living as a musician. Sometimes discussing

how to do your own taxes and accounting, starting and

running LLC’s, how to get gigs, advertising, using social

media, etc… I also try to be real about how tough it can

be to make a comfortable living off of music. Almost all

the folks I work with in bands have day jobs. They’re

weekend warriors and play on the weekends. Some gig,

run home studios, do live sound, teach on top of another

career or combined with a few other side gigs.

I don’t want to paint an unrealistic picture of how easy

it will be or that one job will be able to support them.

But, It’s a tough balance because I want to encourage

and inspire students, but also don’t want to create

un-realistic expectations. I tell them my path and their

paths are probably going to look very different. Much

like culture and technology, the music business is always

changing. The landscape of career opportunities and ways

of generating income are constantly evolving for creatives.

Some folks can make a handsome living off a successful

YouTube channel, or being an Instagram influencer, starting

a podcast, inventing some cool product, or other things

on the peripheral of music. It’s the wild west out there. Be

bold, try things and follow your dreams, but also be realistic

about how you can support yourself and sustain your ability

to do music. There’s no shame in landing a full-time job and

doing music in your free time. That’s a wrap!

Hello, my name is Matt Mosher. I am an audio engineer and owner of Blue Galaxy Audio

Productions. I am an alumni from FRCC Larimer campus. I received an AA degree in Liberal Arts

with a focus on audio production and music. I graduated in 2018, then I returned in 2019 and finished

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL

As a returning student looking to find a new career path after being

a stay-at-home mom for over a decade, it was a challenge to find

an area of study where I could feel confident of building off the

experiences and knowledge I gained during my previous career.

CAD

Prior to attending FRCC, I worked in a computer-related field and

have always enjoyed drawing, so I was intrigued by the CAD

Certificate program. The first semester was challenging because I

struggled to balance duties as a mother with the expectations of

being a full-time student. I relied on instructor office hours, CAD lab

hours, and the assistance offered by my classmates to be successful.

Ultimately, I knew I made the right choice when I successfully earned

the Basic CAD certificate. After speaking with the CAD Program

Director, Mr. Yates, he let me know that there would be more career

opportunities available to me if I completed the degree program. I

accepted the challenge and refocused my efforts on obtaining the

CAD Degree.

This past summer, I participated in an internship with a local

engineering design firm. This experience allowed me to demonstrate

the skills I had acquired through my FRCC coursework and provided

me a valuable opportunity to gain some industry exposure, which will

help with acquiring full-time employment.

The FRCC CAD program offers several certification programs, as well

as classes in architecture, mechanical, and civil disciplines. There are

classes that teach students valuable skills needed in the field such as

print reading for CAD, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, Fusion,

character modeling and many more. My FRCC instructors are very

helpful, encouraging, and always offer additional support for me to

learn the material properly. The CAD labs are up-to-date and well

equipped, and the 3D print class gave me an opportunity to learn

a skill using the latest technologies on a variety of 3D printers. It has

been a challenging and rewarding journey. The program has given

me the courage to embark on a new career with more confidence.

–Sarah, FRCC Student

Don Rothfuss: Capstone Project: For years, I have

been contemplating the idea of designing and

constructing a Benchtop Lathe. The classes

I’ve taken at FRCC, in pursuit of my Computer

Aided Design and Drafting Associate of Applied

Sciences degree, provided me the knowledge,

experience and tools to design and 3D print this

functional machine for my Capstone project.

The conceptualizing and modeling process was

enjoyable. After hours of modeling the components

and detailing engineering drawings, I refined the

design to accommodate purchased parts to ensure

the design would assemble and function as desired.

After many test prints to help define specific fits for

bearings and other mating parts, assembling the

parts was rewarding and there was very little post

processing. I am very proud of the way this project

turned out, I believe defining a Capstone project

that was rewarding yet challenging and achievable

led to the successful completion of the project.

The FRCC CAD

program is excellent.

This program provided

me with experience in

multiple types of CAD

and allowed me to

focus on the areas

I enjoyed most.

Kaylee’s Story

I started my time at FRCC studying nursing. I never

expected to be working in creating buildings for people

instead. While studying nursing, I learned to love the

structure of the body. Yet, after taking architectural

hand drafting, I found that my love for structure and

understanding of how things worked was more than

skin deep and I began pursuing Architectural and

Building Science.

Now that my time at Front Range is coming to an end,

I cannot help but express my appreciation for those who

work in this field as well as those who educate others.

My education was able to open a door to a new chapter.

Before my last year at Front Range, I was given an amazing

opportunity to get a job working with an electrical

engineer. Something I could have never achieved without

the help of my teachers.

My time at Front Range and the amazing teachers I have

been able to meet and learn from, will hold a special place

in my heart and within my work.

My time at Front Range

Rosemary’s Story

When I started at FRCC, I thought it would just be a

stepping stone to some “better” school. As I finish my

Associates in Architectural and Building Science, I have

found that I have gained a well-rounded education.

I have been introduced to all sides of design and

implementation: from: studying materials, structure,

codes, and aesthetics, to designing whole houses and

building parts of them myself. I have heard the different

perspectives of architects, engineers, contractors, and

subcontractors, as I witnessed how they all work together.

I learned more than I could have hoped.

My teachers at Front Range Community College have

been more than just teachers, they have been mentors and

friends. Their decades of experience and genuine passion

for their fields have been an inspiration as they set a

powerful example of resilience, adaptability, and endless

optimism for their students. I am incredibly thankful for

the experience I have gained and for the diverse, inspiring

people I have met.

Range Community College

We have passionate industry-experienced

instructors, a student-led design agency, design

and social media internship opportunities, honors

options, a student exhibit every Spring and a tight

community of students and instructors.

Emma Cory

Our program teaches software skills, design

basics, communication, and problem-solving

conceptualization. MGD social media engages

students year-round. Student graduate with a

professional portfolio.

The MGD program prepares students for their next

step, whether that is planning to get a job after

graduation or pursuing further education. Get the

skills you need to have a creative career in design.

The MGD program at FRCC has not only taught

me the technical skills of graphic design,

as in the creative programs and principles

of good design, but it has also taught me

confidence. Through sharing my creative

work with my instructors and peers, I’ve been

able to develop and better understand my

own unique style. Communicating about my

pieces and gaining others’ insight on my work

has helped expand my creative horizons and

appreciate more deeply the powerful role we

have as communicators. –Rachel Peterson

Ode to Friends We’ve Lost

Erica Montgomery

A kinder being you would not meet,

this jolly giant fearless and sweet.

The gift of friendship, a true treasure,

your heart we could not measure.

Seeking to show your true iridescence,

laughter and love echo your presence.

Flickering, dimming so fragile,

mind fighting, the need to unravel.

Like solitude needs serenity,

an angel, his wings.

Britt is a queer designer, passionate about using her

creativity to spread awareness and promote social

justice. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, who grew up

surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of

services field. Anticipating the birth of her son, she

became motivated to change career paths and promptly

enrolled in school just a month into becoming a new
