supporters as being the last to be played in front of
the much-loved Spion Kop and Tilton Road terraces
which dated back to when St. Andrew’s was built 88
years beforehand.
The second largest crowd of the season gathered
for what was dubbed ‘The Kop’s Last Stand’ but
Robins’ striker Scott Partridge had not read the
script and soon put the visitors 0-2 up before
second-half goals from Steve Claridge and Louie
Donowa ensured the last game in front of the Kop
ended just as the first had in 1906, in a draw.
As well as this emotional occasion, the simple
but stylish new strip was also worn in another
stalemate, at Bolton Wanderers, a fortnight later,
but for the eagle-eyed, there was a subtle difference
which distinguishes it from the following season’s
outfit.
For these two unexpected appearances at the
back end of 1993/94, the shirt numbers were printed
in a 3D-style font with the Admiral logo at the base
(as seen on the photo of Roger Willis, Scott Hiley
and Andy Saville celebrating at Burnden Park) but by
the following August, these had been changed for a
more traditional sewn-on design.
It is little quirks such as this that can ultimately
create collectors’ items.
So, can we expect Blues to trot out in newly
designed shirts for tonight’s game? We certainly
do not think so but when it is Bristol City who are
coming to St. Andrew’s, you can never be too sure!
