WhenAustralian surfer and outdoor enthusiastRob Lorenzon adopted Spike from a dogrescue centre, he was thrilled to have found apal for life… but he never imagined he’d getthe dream surf buddy too.“Spike seemed to know he was a winner. Itwas like he was saying, who’d have thoughta dog like me, that nobody wanted, wouldbecome a dog surfing champion?”Despite having never seen the sea, Spike,who Rob jokes is part kelpie, part bordercollie, part ridgeback and maybe even partpenguin, wasn’t content with watching hisnew human companions swim and surf – hewanted to be involved! He became a skilledswimmer, diver and even surfer, joining Robto catch waves on his stand-up paddleboard,and in 2018 taking the award for best waveat the Noosa Dog Surfing Championship inQueensland.It might sound niche, but dog surfing hasa long pedigree. It was first documentedin the 1920s in California and Hawaii. Inthe 1930s, a silent film called On The Wavesin Waikiki showed Phillip K Auna and histerrier Night Hawk surfing together on awooden surfboard. The first dog surfingchampionship was held in 2006 in California,with events becoming popular in the USAand Australia… and the phenomenonreached UK shores in 2018.Held at the dog-friendly Branksome DeneChine beach near Poole in Dorset, the UKDog Surfing Championships has grown yearon year, with 2022’s edition also seeing livemusic, food stalls and fancy dress (mostlyfrom the humans). Media attention hasbeen extreme. The event featured on TheOne Show, This Morning and Sky News,with organisers Mark and Jules saying, “Wewere astounded by the media interest. Everynational paper and every local paper in theUK (we mean every single paper includingScotland and Ireland). But why not – it’s sucha fun day!”The 2024 UK Dog Surfing Championshipwill take place in July 2024; see www.shakasurf.co.uk.
