Staff, volunteers, and children at the Run the Race Center gather together for a photo in the new gymnasium. This month marks
the completion of the year-long expansion project that saw numerous delays due to supply chain issues and frequent break-ins
to the construction site. The community will be able to schedule times to use and rent the multi-purpose room in the near future.
A new multi-purpose room for community
gatherings, family reunions, and
sporting opportunities will soon be available
for public use.
In the coming weeks, the contractors
who have been tasked with the major
expansion of the gymnasium at the Run
the Race Center will put the minor finishing
touches on the year-long project.
Now encompassing 10,000 square-feet
of space, the amenities include a performance
stage with a private dressing room,
retractable basketball hoops, home and
visitor bleachers, and an official capacity
that will allow hundreds of individuals to
be in the room at the same time.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to
share this wonderful new gymnasium
with the children of the city and with the
people of the community,” said Rachel
Muha, founder of the Run the Race Center
— a part of the Brian Muha Foundation. “It
has been a long time coming and sometimes
I never thought I would be able to
say those words.”
The long road of the expansion project
began to take shape more than a decade
ago when Muha moved the non-profit
organization that allows inner-city children
and adolescents to have a “safe space
to learn and play” in a faith-based setting
to the current location at 880 S. Wayne
Ave.
Officially opening in 2012, some of the
older children who were more sports-oriented
could see right away that the size of
the gymnasium would not be well-served
in the long run.
“It was way too small,” said Daniel
Houston, a former adolescent visitor of the
center who is now employed as an adult
mentor and program specialist. “There
were so many kids all trying to fit in this
middle school-sized gym.”
Although the children made an
attempt to maintain the condition of the
gymnasium, he admitted they might have
shaved a few usable years off its lifespan.
“We were kind of rough back then,
especially with the nets and the basketball
area,” said Houston.
At the time, Houston and his friends
discussed the merits of addressing the
need for a new gymnasium with Muha but
ultimately decided against taking that
step.
“None of us were going to ask Ms.
Rachel to buy a new gymnasium,” he said
with a laugh. “We have always felt like we
could talk to her about anything but we
definitely weren’t going to talk to her
about our need for more space so we could
burn off energy.”
As the years passed, Muha started to
see for herself that an expansion of the
5,000 square-foot gymnasium was needed:
At first, the number of children who came
to the center for respite increased. Then
came the calls from the city to host community
events and meetings. That was
followed by inquiries from the community
asking if the site was available to rent for
gatherings. And then some of the more
creative-minded children at the center
Housing advocate
selected to serve on
Hilltop commission
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
An affordable housing advocate has
been chosen to serve on the Greater Hilltop
Area Commission.
At its meeting on Jan. 3, the commissioners
accepted the nomination of Ashley
Montana to fill an open appointed seat.
Pending approval by the office of
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther,
Montana will begin serving her three-year
term next month.
Nominated by commissioner Dean
Smith, the westside resident is no stranger
to area commissions.
While working toward her degree in city
and regional planning at The Ohio State
University, the undergraduate served as
an intern for the chair of the Fifth by
Northwest Area Commission, which covers
approximately 700 acres on the northwest
side of Columbus.
In 2016, she was selected by the commission
to serve as the chair, becoming one
of the youngest individuals to be chosen for
that position. Smith said that was just one
of the reasons why he nominated her to fill
the at-large seat on the GHAC.
“A lot of us would not have been as prepared
to hold that position (when we were)
in our early 20s,” he said.
Montana served as the chair of the Fifth
by Northwest Area Commission for three
years before resigning in 2019. She said
she stepped down from that advisory board
so she could attend more GHAC meetings
as a way to learn about community concerns
when she took the position of com-
meeting.
As the ‘home’ subcommittee chair of Envision Hilltop, a
community-based action plan that aims to overcome
decades of disinvestment in business and housing
on the westside, Montana advocates for mixed
income housing and affordable housing, especially
for low income families.
She said as the ‘home’ subcommittee chair and
as an advisory committee member for Envision
Hilltop, she wants to continue their overall mission
as a member of the GHAC.
“I think they (the Hilltop commission) have done
a really good job so far (in supporting the Envision
Hilltop plan), but I would like to reiterate some of
the things that are featured in the plan, in particular
the alignment with mixed use housing, low
income housing, and land bank properties that are
city owned,” said Montana.
She intends to serve as a member of the commission’s
planning and economic development committee
and the public safety committee.
Commission chairman Dan Fagan said he was
“thrilled” that Montana was chosen to serve on the
advisory board.
“She is already very involved in our planning
and economic development committee and she is
already very engaged in what is happening in our
community and trying to find solutions to some of
the problems in our community,” he said.
“I think that with her background in city and
regional planning and her interest in making our
communities safe and walkable, Ashley will be a
real asset to the commission.”
Unlike last year which saw only one individual
nominated for the at-large seat, the commission
mulled the nomination of five individuals. In addition
to Montana, the individuals also considered
were:
Adhanet Kifle, he wanted to serve as a representative
for the local Hispanic population and assist in the
establishment of a new park in the area.
•JD Groves, a former commissioner who is the president
of an electric company. Nominated by commissioner
Rachel Wenning, he wanted to work toward providing job
opportunities and job creation for the community.
•Ricky Kitchen, an educator who has a passion for
health equity. Nominated by commissioner Dan Fagan, he
wanted to serve as a representative of the Georgesville
area and shine a spotlight on the development that is taking
place in that area of the westside.
•Steve Sheets, a life-long Hilltopper who is a retired
educator and coach. Nominated by commissioner Jennie
Keplar, he wanted to serve on the commission as a way to
“give back to the community.”
After three rounds of voting, the current 14-member
commission was deadlocked between Manuel Cruz and
Montana. Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Fred Brophy
was tasked with picking a name out of a canvas tote to
determine who would receive the at-large seat. Manuel
Cruz’s name was selected but he did not accept the nomination,
stating that he believed the commission would be
better served with Montana’s experience.
The commissioners held another vote to determine
whether the outcome would have been affected had
Manuel Cruz not been in the running. By a majority vote,
the commissioners selected Montana to fill the at-large
seat.
In other news, the commission selected its officers for
the new year. Victoria Bates-Frye will serve as the chairwoman
while Dan Fagan will serve as the vice-chair.
Joseph Argiro will continue to serve as the secretary and
Dean Smith will serve as the treasurer.
Assignments for the committees will be announced at
next month’s full commission meeting. It will be held on
Capital
Budget
Update
In a previous communication with you, I outlined
the capital budget process. As you may recall, the
capital budget encompasses construction projects
funded, at least in part, with public dollars and is
passed in even-numbered years. For this biennium,
it will total about $4 billion and will include a onetime
supplement of $700 million, which was inserted
as a result of a surplus in tax revenues during
the operating budget process last year.
Most of the construction projects are determined
by various state entities and public universities
based on budget amounts in previous two-year
budgets. About $180 million are allocated for community
projects around the state. This will be supplemented
by the one-time $700 million referenced
above. Franklin County’s share of this $880 million
will total about $90 million.
I have been meeting with folks representing projects
asking for the state to fund a portion of them.
In addition, I have conferred with the state representatives
from the other Franklin County house
districts in an attempt to gain consensus on the relative
worthiness of larger projects for the greater
Columbus community. Our work has been aided
greatly by the Columbus Partnership, the chief economic
development group for Central Ohio, which
has collected and vetted over 100 capital budget request
submissions.
As of now, we are looking to focus the bulk of our
available funding to assist with up to five large Central
Ohio projects. These include the Ohio Center
for Advanced Technologies, a workforce development
center to be located on the Columbus State
Community College campus, the Columbus Symphony’s
new concert hall and learning center, the
new John Glenn International Airport terminal project,
a Columbus Downtown development project,
and the modernization of Nationwide Arena. Some
resources will be allocated to fund a portion of
some medium-sized projects for non-profit, social
service-oriented entities such as Maryhaven, Buckeye
Ranch, the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, and the PAST
Foundation for mathematics and science education.
Finally, some funds may get allocated to smaller
local community projects such as playground
equipment for the Grove City Town Center Park,
Green Lawn Cemetery restoration, and the Heinzerling
Community’s roof replacement and HVAC modernization
projects.
We are submitting our lists of priority projects this
week. They will be reviewed by the House Finance
Committee. Its recommendations will be voted on
by the entire House later this spring. The Senate will
utilize a similar process after we finish. We anticipate
an approved capital budget by early summer.
these improvements will enhance the
DCS’s heating and cooling capabilities and
reduce utility costs in the long term.”
The scope of the project at the
Transportation Service Center on
Southwest Boulevard will primarily be cosmetic.
“There are some doors that need to be
replaced and the exterior of the building
will be painted,” he said. “A new heating
system will be installed in the mechanics
bay as well as replacing some ventilation
units.”
He added that lighting will be upgraded
throughout the facility with energy efficient
LED fixtures and restrooms and
break areas will be renovated to provide
better facilities for staff. The office area
will also be renovated to provide a “more
functional work space for scheduling and
routing students each day.”
Detterman said the project could start
sometime this winter, but most of the work
would take place in the spring and summer.
The district believes both of the projects
will be completed near the start of the
2024-25 school year.
Unlike a majority of the infrastructure
improvement projects that have been
approved by the board within the past several
years, this project will be funded by
permanent improvement dollars and not
federal dollars that have been allocated
through the American Rescue Plan and the
Elementary and Secondary School
Emergency Relief Fund (APR-ESSER).
Some of the district infrastructure
improvement projects that has been
approved through the utilization of federal
dollars include the construction of a new
Stiles Family Resource Center, HVAC
replacement and repairs throughout the
school buildings, a new addition to Hayes
at the recreation centers, and an
event center expansion at the South-
The ARP-ESSER dollars have also been
utilized for learning loss initiatives caused
by the COVID-19 pandemic. The district
has spent approximately $16 million to
combat learning loss by hiring additional
counselors, intervention specialists, social
workers, and student support liaisons. The
district has also offered online tutoring
services, expanded upon its summer school
RUN THE RACE
Continued from page 1
wanted to access the space to stage original
productions.
“It was time for me to do something
about it,” said Muha. “Or according to some
people, way past time.”
In 2021, Muha and the supporters of the
Run the Race Center started a fundraising
campaign to cover the cost of the expansion.
Since they do not accept local, state,
or federal dollars, the non-profit organization
had to hit the ground running to raise
roughly $700,000 for the project.
“We had to rob a few banks to do it,”
Muha joked.
With the financial assistance of “a very
generous community,” the Run the Race
Center was able to break ground on the
gymnasium expansion in the summer of
2022. Delays in the supply chain would put
the project on hold for the next several
months and then vandals would further
delay the construction — and add to the
overall expense of the project by roughly
$700,000.
Houston said he remembers the sick
feeling they had when the construction site
was broken into for the first time. Then
came the fire that destroyed some equipment
and materials. Then came more
break-ins and thefts of the site and the center
itself.
“Our morale was so low, we all just felt
terrible,” he recalled. “It felt like we were
working against the devil. Every time that
the contractors would let us know they
were making progress, someone would
come in and break in and take something
or mess with something and it would put
us back to where we were.”
“I didn’t understand why people kept
doing this to us when we are the people
who are trying to help the community,” he
said.
The frequent break-ins were particularly
rough for the staff, volunteers and the
children at the center, said Muha, but they
were determined to see it through to the
very end.
“You get to the point where you start to
think ‘Oh yeah? You think you’re going to
stop us? Because you’re not,’” said Muha.
“It just made us more determined for the
kids’ sake because this is a place where the
children know that they can come and that
they’re safe and they can be who they want
to be when they are here.
“That is what was so aggravating and
what made it hurt so much, but we are
almost to the end now and it is going to be
good for everyone, especially for our children
because God loves them so much,” she
said.
For the past several weeks, the children
at the center have been able to get a feel for
the new gymnasium for themselves.
Emone Allen, 13, said what she likes
about the new gym in comparison to the old
gym is how much room there is to move.
“It’s really fun to be able to play around
more,” she said.
Liam Smith, 10, said he is thankful that
the extra space allows him to practice his
Dayvion Foster, 11, said he is grateful
that he and his friends now have more
room to burn off energy with some of their
favorite games such as basketball, dodgeball,
or sharks and minnows.
He said it is his hope that no one else
comes in and vandalizes the property.
“I would like it to not get wrecked
because we really love it,” Foster stated.
When the “minor, finishing touches” are
completed, the community will be able to
schedule a time to use and/or rent the
space during certain hours of the day, early
evenings, or weekends. Currently, the
Capital Regiment Performing Arts marching
band uses the space to practice and
Muha has invited those involved in a
multi-family homeschool to call 614-276-
2171 to discuss the formation of a basketball
league for children aged 7-9 and 10-14.
Email correspondence can also be sent to
BrianMuhaFoundation@hotmail.com.
Those contacts can also be used for any
question the community has about the use
of the gymnasium.
The center would also like to have their
own basketball team— or any other team
pursuit the children are interested in — and
host tournaments in the near future. Muha
said she is “so excited” about the endless
possibilities this gymnasium expansion
will provide to the area children and the
community.
“I think what I enjoy about it most right
now is how much joy it is bringing to our
children,” said Muha. “Sometimes they
walk in here (through the doors of the Run
the Race Center), kind of unsure if they
belong or they think they need to act tough.
But then they come into the gym and
they’re all playing a game that they’re all
familiar with and they start to bond
because ultimately it doesn’t matter where
they came from.
“When they are at this center, when
they are in the gym, they just enjoy being
together and being somewhere safe. And it
is a beautiful sight to see.”
Founded in 2012 by three movie producers,
A24 has garnered a reputation as an
independent entertainment company that
rarely has a misstep. In such a short
amount of time, they have altered the landscape
of the horror genre by funding psychological
thrillers such as “Hereditary”,
“Midsommar,” and “The Witch”; they have
distributed some of the buzziest television
with ELVIS
“Euphoria” on HBO; and they have disrupted
the upper crust of the academy by
believing that an off-the-wall comedy like
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” could
have a profound impact on an industry that
takes itself far too seriously.
For many who follow the work of A24,
this company can truly do no wrong. But
eventually there comes a time when a
trusted source of good taste makes a boneheaded
decision and that is what they did
in regard to their latest film, “The Iron
Claw.”
When entertainment companies believe
they have something special on their
hands, they present the film for international
audiences and professional critics at
fall festivals. If the movie, or perhaps a
noteworthy performance in the movie, generates
a positive amount of buzz, it can propel
that film or that performance to the top
of must-see lists for the remainder of the
year or even the upcoming year.
Additionally, that strong word-of-mouth
can also have an impact at the domestic
and global box office, and it can even help a
movie or a performance in that movie snag
a nomination or a statue at major industry
events.
Now, I am not certain who at A24 was
tasked with determining whether “The
Iron Claw”, a film that is centered around
a famed but tragic American wrestling
family, was worthy of a fall festival run but
their decision to withhold this quietly devastating
movie from the circuit was
absolutely moronic. Perhaps it was because
it is a movie about wrestling, perhaps it
was because the star of the film — who gives
the performance of his career — was a former
teenage heartthrob, or perhaps it was
because they were just too busy making the
switch from independent entertainment
company to a commercial conglomerate.
But whatever the circumstances were that
led to this film not being presented at the
festivals where it could receive the appropriate
amount of buzz it deserves should be
considered a criminal offense in my book.
While I have sworn that I would no
longer try to make up for the stupidity of
others, I feel it is my duty as a movie
reviewer to do what the individual at A24
would not do and wholeheartedly throw my
support behind “The Iron Claw.” Although
the subject matter, which touches upon
mental health issues, suicidal ideation and
toxic masculinity, makes it a difficult
watch, the love the siblings in this family
have for each other and the warmth the
actors exude while portraying their reallife
counterparts make that difficult watch
completely worthwhile.
Like any good wrestling match, the film
opens by introducing the audience to an
antagonist, a hulking figure named Fritz
Von Erich (ferociously played by Holt
McCallany). Wearing little more than
trunks and a snarl, he taunts the spectators
who have come out to cheer on his good
guy foe as he prepares to deliver his signature
move to incapacitate his opponent — a
crushing claw hold to the head, followed by
a back slam to the unforgiving mat. It is a
maneuver that has made Fritz Von Erich
(a.k.a. Jack Adkisson in his out-of-ring life)
famous and feared and it serves as an apt
metaphor for the iron grip he has on his
family, in particular his sons.
As a professional wrestler in the
www.columbusmessenger.com
In Entertainment
More tender moments than body slams in “e Iron Claw”
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
National Wrestling
Alliance, Fritz had
middling success
and never won a
world heavyweight
belt, a decision that
he believed was due
to his cantankerous
nature outside of the ring. The fact that he
was never promoted to champion status
rankled him so thoroughly that he has
made acquiring it via his sons his mission
in life.
In turn, second eldest son Kevin (Zac
Efron), third eldest son David (Harris
Dickinson), fourth eldest son Kerry
(Jeremy Allen White), and the “baby” son
Mike (Stanley Simmons) have made it
their mission to appease their father.
(Important note: eldest son Jack Jr. died as
a child and the sixth and last son, Chris,
was omitted by writer/director Sean
Durkin as he believed it would have been
“too much” for the audience to handle
another tragic death.)
Since childhood, the boys have dreamed
of following in the footsteps of the legendary
Fritz Von Erich, spending almost
all of their time outside of school and the
family farm pumping iron, working on
moves, and performing in the wrestling
league founded by their father in Dallas.
Although they often jockey for the patriarch’s
favor, the siblings truly care for and
love and support each other in all that they
do — even when Fritz decides that wrestling
star Kevin will take a back seat to his more
charismatic brothers, David and Kerry.
As Kevin is the only surviving Von Erich
brother — all of his younger siblings died in
their early 20s and 30s due to sudden
health issues (David) and by suicide (Chris,
Kerry and Mike) — writer/director Sean
Durkin makes him the focal point of the
film and the vehicle in which the audience
experiences the tragic downfall of this family.
It is a decision that largely works
because of how extraordinary Efron is in
this role.
Efron, who has a naturally lean build
that is capable of putting on muscle, completely
transformed his body for “The Iron
Claw.” Working with trainers Chavo
Guerrero Jr. and Farren Morgan, he put 15
pounds of muscle on his frame and even
allowed his luxurious locks to be cut into a
bowl-shaped nightmare. But primary to
that is his transformative performance as
Kevin, playing him with a discombobulating
mix of beefiness and vulnerability.
Knowing what we do about the Von Erich
family, it hits the heart hard early in the
film when Kevin is out on a date and he
tells his future wife that all he wants to do
with his life is to be with his brothers. And later, when all of them
are gone, it hits even harder when he realizes he is all alone.
It is hard not to become an emotional mess while watching
“The Iron Claw”, which is comprised of more tender moments
than body slams. It’s difficult not to want to pop through that
screen and fight Fritz Von Erich, who would have been better
served if he had simply recognized the true talents of his sons and
not pushed them into the ring; it’s difficult not to want to pop
through that screen and knock away the needles that are in the
hands of David and Kerry as it causes addiction and death later;
and it’s difficult not to want to pop through that screen and give
Kevin a big hug as he cries for all the trauma and tragedy that his
beloved family has endured. Instead, all we can do is sit and
watch as this wonderful and wonderfully difficult film plays out.
And then we can go sob in our cars for a good while afterward. Or
maybe that was just me? Grade: A-
Parental approval
now needed for
social media use
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is
making the public aware of a new state
law giving parents oversight of their children’s
use of social media websites as well
as online services and products aimed at
children.
The Parental Notification by Social
Media Operators Act, approved by the
General Assembly in July, will take effect
on Jan. 15.
“This law aims to give parents more
control over their children creating new
social media accounts,” Yost said. “So just
like any other time, if you feel like you’ve
been wronged by a company, we take those
complaints and work to resolve any issues
— this is no different.”
The Ohio Attorney General is charged
with enforcement of this law, which
applies to websites, services and products
that are targeted to children or reasonably
expected to be accessed by children.
Beginning Jan. 15, operators must
obtain parental consent before establishing
accounts for children under the age of
16. They also must present parents with a
list of censoring or content moderation features.
When consent is granted, operators
must then send written confirmation of the
account to the parent or legal guardian.
When consent is not given, operators must
deny the child access to the platform.
In cases in which operators fail to provide
notification or a parent wishes to terminate
a child’s access, parents should
contact the website operator who then has
30 days to terminate the child’s access. If
parents are unsuccessful in the account
being deleted, they are encouraged to file a
complaint with the Ohio Attorney
General’s Office at OhioProtects.org.
The new law does not require operators
to notify parents about accounts created
before Jan. 15, 2024.
OhioProtects.org features frequently
asked questions regarding the law and
offers additional resources for parents
seeking information on the upcoming regulations.
