Let the ‘bread of life’ satisfy your spiritual hunger 

SOUL-SPIRATION

Yesterday was Sunday, a day of worship for many 

of us. Today, as I sit here drinking a cup of coffee, I 

find myself thinking about some of the things we do 

during a church service. 

For me, the most important part is coming to the 

table to receive communion, or the Lord’s supper, 

as some denominations call it. What goes through 

your mind during this part of the worship experience? 

Are your thoughts on what you’re receiving? 

The symbols of Jesus’ last supper have deep meant 

for believers — the bread, which is Christ’s broken 

body, and the wine, the blood he shed on the cross 

to atone for our sins. 

Have you ever really given it any thought at all? 

During communion, Christ is saying to each of us, 

“Come. Be my guest.” Do you see where you fit in as 

a guest at the Lord’s table? 

Well, let me take you on a journey through history 

to show you why this is relevant to the worship 

service. 

Let’s go back a couple of centuries here in America. 

Imagine we’re visiting the home of a wealthy 

plantation owner. Now, let’s imagine that this person 

decides to send an open invitation to the workers 

in his fields, most likely slaves, with a few hired 

hands, to drop their tools and walk through the 

front door of his home. Once there, he seats them 

at a table, set with the finest China and silver, and 

share a meal the plantation owner prepares and 

serves with his own hands. 

Following the meal, he initiates an open, honest 

conversation with his (most likely extremely perplexed 

and wary) guests. 

Can you imagine the shockwaves, and the social 

outcry at that time in history, especially in the Deep 

South? But this particular plantation owner doesn’t 

care; he sees each person as a valuable individual, 

not as a possession. 

Now, let’s move further back to another time 

in history — the Palestinian Judaism era — and 

imagine the same scenario between a wealthy merchant 

in town. In addition to his own servants and 

slaves, he invites not only beggars from the streets, 

but also tax collectors and (gasp!) prostitutes. The 

laws of this time legally prohibited respectable 

members of society to even speak to such sinners,

let alone break bread with these outcasts. 

Now let’s travel back to the present time and visit 

the Middle East, where sharing a meal with someone 

is a sign of peace and forgiveness, of friendship 

and unity. To be invited into a person’s home to 

share a meal at their table is a great honor. 

Where does Jesus fit into these scenarios? First, 

during his time on Earth, Jesus extended an open 

invitation to everyone. He didn’t restrict the guests 

at his dinner table. 

One example is Zacchaeus, a dishonest tax collector. 

Jesus called to Zacchaeus to come down 

from that sycamore tree and break bread with him. 

Needless, to say, the local religious leaders decried 

Jesus’ actions, saying he was breaking the law by 

sharing a table with a tax collector. But Zacchaeus 

was overwhelmed with joy to be accepted by this 

man of God, who was known as a prophet. Jesus 

welcomed Zacchaeus and accepted him despite his 

flaws. 

“Be my guest.” 

This was what Jesus says when he welcomes 

someone into his inner circle — and he does this 

for each and every one of us. We all have flaws, 

and skeletons in our closet. But Jesus comes to us 

and says we’re forgiven, accepted and loved. Christ 

chose to share meals with the outcasts of his time to 

show the world that all are loved in God’s eyes.

Today, status seekers invite the best and most 

influential people to their table, with the hope of receiving 

a reciprocal invitation. You might call these 

people “social climbers.” Well, Jesus is not a social 

climber. He asks nothing of us except that we accept 

his invitation. He offers salvation — freedom from 

sin and a personal relationship with God. 

During communion time at church, it’s easy to 

focus on Jesus as a sacrifice, which he was, but it’s 

important to also see him as a joyous person, full of 

life, and smiling when we visit with him. He wants 

us to know we are forgiven and accepted just as we 

are. There’s no need to be gloomy when you accept 

the invitation to come to the holy table. 

Bring all your cares to His table and see what joy 

you can receive from accepting Christ into your life. 

A shared meal is a shared life. When Christ broke 

the bread and shared it at his last supper, He said to 

his disciples, “This is my body, broken for you.” And 

when he shared the cup of wine, he said, “This is my 

blood, shed for you.” 

In the breaking of the bread and the sharing of 

the cup, we are freed from the bond of sin. We now 

share the joy of a life lived in Christ. Each of us is 

like those ragtag outcasts of old, and we are all offered 

a new life in Christ. He accepts us just as we 

are.

group of concerned citizens to 

offer assistance to the City of 

Tallahassee Parks and Recreation 

Department in acquiring 

additional sources of funding 

for programs and facilities. The 

primary purpose of the nonprofit, 

tax-exempt foundation is 

to acquire properties and accept 

gifts for use in the City’s park 

system. 

Since 1981, the Foundation has 

received over $1.5 million in gifts 

and property. Gifts have included 

everything from supplies for a 

sewing class to sponsorship of a 

youth athletic league to the Oven 

Park property and house. You can 

help as an individual or group by 

making donations for specific 

programs or facilities, or you can 

let the Foundation decide where 

your donation can best be used. 

The possibilities are endless! 

Either as an individual, a 

school or scouting group, or 

a neighborhood association, 

everyone can get involved. For
