of getting jabbed, and similar 

invasive procedures? 

KAY PETERS of 

Sewell became a 

registered nurse in 

1958 – she’s seen 

it all. “I was always 

interested in how 

the body works and 

how it responds 

to interventions,” 

she says. “I never 

had a problem 

watching surgeries. 

In fact, I found them 

fascinating.” 

“I don’t mind getting 

stuck, but I couldn’t 

stick you,” says 

MATT DOBOS of 

Delran. “Blood in a 

vial doesn’t bother 

me, but pouring out 

of a body? That’s 

a different matter 

altogether.” 

Haddonfield’s 

LAUREN ZONIES 

has a brother who 

was “afraid of blood 

and bodily injuries. 

So I played the role 

of the big sister and 

helped him get over 

it.” And as a mom? 

“No sweat!” 

“Since I’m a mom, 

I’m a pro when it 

comes to blood and 

bodily fluids,” says 

CONNIE BALIS of 

Mullica Hill. 

“Also, I’ve had 

multiple surgeries, 

so I’m used to blood 

draws and jabs.” 

LEE PETERS of 

Sewell is a fan of 

horror films. “The 

gorier, the better,” 

he says. “Well, in the 

movies anyway. I‘m 

not a squeamish 

person, but seeing 

someone lying in a 

pool of blood in real 

life would probably 

turn my stomach.” 

“It depends whose 

blood it is,” says 

ROBBIN MULLIN of 

Cherry Hill. “When I 

have a blood draw, 

I don’t like to look. 

But I’m perfectly 

fine with getting 

vaccinations.”

Awards for students, educators 

› Rising Sun Lodge No. 15, F&AM – located at 16 

Kings Hwy E – has announced the availability of two 

$1,500 education grants for college-bound students 

who will graduate from area high schools at the end 

of the 2023-24 school year. 

The Lodge also announced that nominations are 

now open for its 2024 Educator of the Year Award 

for outstanding educators and administrators in 

Camden County.

Twain returns 

› “It could probably be shown by facts and figures 

that there is no distinctly native American criminal 

class except Congress.” 

Mark Twain’s pithy observations on life are as 

spot-on today as they were when he first expressed 

them. Now Twain is back, to apply laughter’s 

healing balm liberally, extravagantly, immoderately, 

and with little regard for the delicacies of today’s 

political atmosphere!

auditorium at 7pm on Fri Jan 26 or 2pm on Sat Jan 

27. A $10 donation to the Haddonfield Educational 

Trust will secure a seat and be matched. 

Dogs to the rescue 

› The Haddon Fortnightly Evening Membership 

Department invites all interested members of the 

public to attend a presentation on the work of the 

Tri-State Canine Response Team. 

The Cherry Hill-based nonprofit provides trained 

and certified handler/dog teams for animal-assisted 

activities, therapy, and crisis response situations. 

A team of 50 dogs and 60 handlers has touched 

the lives of more than 167,000 people over the past 

decade. 

The meeting will be at the Haddon Fortnightly 

Clubhouse (Kings Hwy E at Grove) on Tue Feb 13 at 

7:30pm. Refreshments will follow the meeting.

of Art and the Ocean 

classes at the Markeim 

Arts Center.

explore a variety of 

art techniques as they 

create an array of sea 

creatures highlighting

ocean. Art activities 

will focus on tropical 

fish, cute crabs, magical 

mermaids, sparkling 

shells, creative pirate 

ships, and more. They 

will make torn paper 

art, mold with air-dry 

clay, paint with nontraditional 

painting 

tools, and create 

collages.

Historic hats ... and a red dress 

› An exhibit of 18 men’s formal hats from the Historical Society’s collection – 

mounted in November then removed temporarily during the Holiday season – 

has been remounted and is now open to the public thru Fri Mar 29. 

The hats on display include a stovepipe, Homburg, bowler, Aylesbury, 

Tilbury, straw boater and fedora. Top hats worn by former NJ Governor Alfred 

E. Driscoll and his father, Alfred R. Driscoll, and the derby worn by Eugene 

Kain when he directed funerals in Haddonfield give a sense of the dignity of the 

times. Two miniature hat models –salesmen’s samples – will also be on display. 

The exhibit also includes the iconic red dress that former mayor Tish 

Colombi wore for Haddonfield’s Independence Day parades during most of her 

28 years as a commissioner.

A 1999 HMHS grad and 

soccer standout, Brad 

died in 2006 of sudden 

cardiac arrest due to an 

undiagnosed and littleunderstood 

condition 

to which teenagers 

and young adults are 

particularly vulnerable: 

arrhythmogenic 

right ventricular 

cardiomyopathy (ARVC). 

Aged 25, Brad was the 

assistant men’s soccer 

coach at Hobart College. 

The foundation 

created in Brad’s 

memory supports 

local communities by 

providing scholarship 

funds for graduating 

high school seniors, 

promoting awareness 

of ARVC and other 

cardiac conditions, and 

purchasing publicly 

accessible defibrillators 

for local facilities.

› An exhibition of landscape photography by John 

Vlahakis, titled “Down the Shore,” will open at the 

Markeim Arts Center on Sun Feb 4 and run thru Fri 

Feb 29. 

The event will kick off with an opening reception

A member of the Society of Media Photographers,

The location will be the Tavistock Country Club, where Rotary meets 

for lunch each Wednesday. The hours for the Blood Drive are 9am to 2pm.

› The Rotary Club is inviting those who enjoy hitting golf balls in the dead of 

winter from one of the cozy enclosures at Topgolf in Mt Laurel to sign up now! 

The club’s foundation will hold its annual fundraiser at Topgolf on Sun Feb 

25 from 4 to 7pm. All who play golf, at any level, are invited to participate. The 

fee for food, fun, fellowship, and golf is $100 for adults, $75 for the first adult 

companion, and $50 for those to age 18. 

Proceeds go directly to funding scholarships for Haddonfield-area students 

and veterans and to grants for local non-profits. 

Sponsorships are available at a number of levels; sponsors are rewarded 

with a variety of benefits and media exposures. And tickets, of course.
