New research has put the UK bottom of 28 leading economies when it comes to trust in the media. The survey by PR company Edelman found that just 31% of Britons trust media institutions to ‘do what is right’. The reasons will be manifold, but with Prince Harry successfully exposing patterns of historical phone hacking, and with presenter scandals at the BBC and ITV, having faith in the media may be a leap too far for many. Don’t believe everything you read… Across the world, journalists have become less trusted to tell the truth. It’s a sad state to be in, but it could be worse. I’m reminded of an encounter at the Wanstead Festival a number of years ago. Among the many conversations had in front of the Wanstead Village Directory stall (Evergreen Field plans, local policing and the type of shops we need on the High Street are recurring festival discussion topics), one particular chat stands out. A young man – who I later discovered was visiting Wanstead for the first time – approached with great interest in the magazine, specifically how we got permission to publish it. He was astounded we were able to distribute so many copies. His astonishment made sense when it transpired it was also his first time to have left his home country of China. When it comes to trust in the media, China actually ranks top of the table. But it also ranks near the bottom of the World Press Freedom Index. So, there are certainly things worse than having media institutions that sometimes get things wrong. The concept of a free press was an alien concept to our visitor from China, but it means – among many other benefits, of course – the Wanstead Village Directory has been able to publish the thoughts of so many local residents over the years.
