An Examination of
the Impact of School
Mobility on the Reading
Skills of Poor and Non-Poor Children in the
demographic variables in school mobility
studies, they have not examined the impact of
school moves in conjunction with changing
school-level socioeconomic status on the
educational outcomes of children. In this
book, Dr. Lee uses nationally representative
data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal
Study (Kindergarten cohort) and evaluates
the influence of school transitions on the
reading skills of several million children who
attended kindergarten through fifth-grade in
the United States.
Presidential Election Holds Special
Meaning for UH West O‘ahu Student
The LeBlanc Family: Joshua, Akira, Lemuel and Christopher. Photo: MidWeek
On election day in November, UH West O‘ahu student Akira LeBlanc was hard
at work on a class paper, but her mind was not far from Barack Obama’s historic
presidential run. Originally from New Orleans and now living in the islands after
her husband Lemuel joined the United States Army, Kira continued to write her
paper while her two sons, Christopher and Joshua, provided regular election updates
until the final results were in. Reflecting on the news of President Obama’s victory,
she remarked in a MidWeek column by Professor Dan Boylan, “I was so thrilled,
obviously, being an African-American woman. His election alone changes the country,
it changes the country’s dynamic. It opens up possibilities for Mexican-Americans,
Native Americans, women. It brings balance to the society, access. It’s such an
achievement. We’ve come so far.”
