Lời chào của trưởng ban tổ chức

OON BEHALF OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, VAYA and

the Vietnamese Federation of San Diego are proud to present

the San Diego Tết Festival. Since 2006, the highly anticipated

event has become integral to the San Diego cultural scene.

The festival has brought fond memories to thousands of people, from

the non-stop entertainment and the awe-inspiring lion dances to the myriad booths

and the savoring scent of cultural foods. We hope the 2024 Tết Festival, Year of the

Dragon, will bring you even greater enjoyment.

This year’s event is fueled by energy, wisdom, creativity, generosity, and kindness, more so than

in previous years. This 2024 festival was challenging to produce in many ways, but our team

overcame those challenges. For that, we would like to thank our staff, the 200-plus volunteers,

the advisors, the numerous sponsors, the local leaders, the performers, and the festival attendees.

We are ever grateful for your support.

Tết 2024 also marks the 19th time VAYA brought this cultural festivity to the great city of San

Diego. We have succeeded in the face of turbulent economies and unpredictable weather. We

have donated thousands of dollars to local charities, schools, and organizations. We have adhered

to our mission of empowering youths toward leadership and community development. For

an organization founded 18 years ago, that is not an easy feat to match.

We, however, could only have ever done it with the people who have come before us. Therefore,

on this joyous occasion, we would like to especially thank the VAYA founders, former VAYA officers,

former Tết staffers, and volunteers because there would not have been a seventeenth, sixteenth

or even a first Tết Festival without them. Happy New Year to all.

giới thiệu quý khách Hội Chợ Tết 2024 Mừng Xuân Giáp Thìn. Bắt đầu từ năm 2006,

Hội Chợ Tết của VAYA đã trở thành một phần quan trọng trong sinh họat văn hóa của

San Diego. Từ những chương trình văn nghệ không ngừng đến các hương vị thức ăn

đặc thù, Hội Chợ Tết đã in đậm trong ký ức của mọi người. Chúng tôi hy vọng quý

khách sẽ tìm thêm nhiều điều thích thú ở Hội Chợ Tết năm nay.

Cũng như những năm trước, quá trình tổ chức Hội Chợ Tết 2024 là sự kết hợp hài hòa của lòng

nhiệt huyết, sự thông thái, sáng tạo, hào phóng và tình thân ái. Chúng tôi rất may mắn đã đựơc

sự hỗ trợ của nhiều thành viên BTC, 200 thiện nguyện viên, các vị cố vấn, các nhà tài trợ, và tất

cả quý khách. Chúng tôi xin thành thật cám ơn.

Hội Chợ Tết 2024 cũng đánh dấu lần thứ 19 VAYA đã đưa sự kiện văn hóa Việt Nam đến thành

phố San Diego. Đối với một tổ chức mới đựơc thành lập từ năm 2004, đó là một kỳ công ngoài

sức tưởng tượng. Để có được ngày hôm nay, các thành viên đi trước đã phải trải qua rất nhiều

gian khổ. Cho nên nhân cơ hội này, chúng tôi muốn đặc biệt cám ơn các nhà sáng lập, các thành

viên cũ của VAYA, và các thiện nguyện viên đi trước chúng tôi.

The Vietnamese-American Youth Alliance (VAYA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan, volunteer organization

founded in 2004 as a means for Vietnamese-American youths to organize socially & culturally

within the local communities. VAYA is committed to educating youths in cultural awareness, social

activism, and community development. As such, we organize projects that challenge youths to explore

their potentials, take on leadership roles, and to direct their individual talents toward making a positive

difference in the community.

Liên Hội Tuổi Trẻ (VAYA) là một tổ chức từ thiện, vô vụ lợi và vô đảng phái được thành lập dưới điều

khoản 501(c)3 năm 2004. Với mục đích giúp đỡ giới trẻ người Việt tại Mỹ trong việc hoạt động xã hội

và văn hóa, VAYA thành tâm hướng dẫn các bạn trẻ nhận thức về văn hóa, vấn đề xã hội, và phát

triển cộng đồng. Chúng tôi tạo ra nhiều đề án để thử thách giới trẻ tìm hiểu tiềm năng của mình, nắm

giữ vai trò lãnh đạo, và dùng tài năng của mình để làm ra nhiều điều tích cực cho cộng đồng.

The Vietnamese Federation of San Diego (VFSD) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serves the Vietnamese-American

community of San Diego County. Originally founded in 1984 as a mutual assistance association

for refugees providing much-needed social services, the VFSD has become the largest Vietnamese

American umbrella organization in San Diego. VFSD consists of 38 association members, such as seniors,

veterans, student, religious, youth, and professional associations as well as individual representatives of the

Vietnamese community. VFSD continues to cater to the cultural and social needs of the growing Vietnamese

American community in San Diego.

Miss Vietnam San Diego is established with the primary focus

of elevating the Vietnamese American woman as a national symbol

of beauty and pride captured internally and externally

through her poise, grace, intellectual strength, and individuality.

The pageant promotes Vietnamese culture by retaining the

functions of the traditional ao dai, developing teamwork

through cultural dance, and directing questions that

demonstrate Vietnamese culture through the

eyes of today’s young Vietnamese women.

Lastly, the Miss Vietnam San Diego pageant

brings our community together. Uniting the

women who participate, friends and family in

the audience, and all those involved in its formation,

Miss Vietnam San Diego brings the Vietnamese

community of San Diego closer together.

Cultural Village

Làng Văn hóa Việt nam

Welcome to the Cultural Village! It is a cozy place for both young and old to visit, learn, and enjoy

the wonderful village-like environment. Created for our fellow countrymen and visitors, we welcome

you to our three-day event, packed with Vietnamese traditions, history, education, entertainment

and activities.

Our mission emphasizes village life — a return to our agricultural roots. As Vietnam progresses into

a developed nation, many traditional ways and customs are being lost. This Cultural Village is a way

to revisit our past, which has always had a central role in Vietnamese life. As the popular folk saying

goes, "The emperor's law is no match for the village's custom."

Come and join us, dress up, and help us improve the overall program or be a part of Cultural Village

to add flavor and color to the Heart of the Tết Festival.

Tết năm nay, hội chợ Tết mang sắc thái của nền văn hóa Việt Nam qua bao thế hệ. Nền văn hóa

đã được gầy dựng bởi dân tộc Việt qua bao thập kỷ và đã được bảo tồn cho đến ngày hôm nay.

Mặc dù dân tộc Việt đã trải qua bao thăng trầm trong lịch sử nhưng vẫn gìn giữ được bản chất của

dân gian qua các di tích như Chùa Thiên Mụ Huế, nhà thượng Tây Nguyên và đền thờ các vua

Hùng.

Nay nhân dịp Tết Giáp Thìn 2024, một lần nữa dân ta lại có dịp thưởng thức các di tích văn hóa

của ông cha ta tại Làng Văn Hóa của hội chợ Tết như múa lân đầu năm, lì xì đầu năm, bút pháp,

ông đồ, lô tô, văn nghệ dân gian qua câu hò Huế, Bắc, Trung và Nam, cùng các lễ hội cổ truyền sẽ

được trình diễn qua ba ngày hội chợ Tết. Ngoài ra sẽ còn nhiều màn ca múa kịch góp vui trong ba

ngày Tết năm nay.

Ban tổ chức rất mong quí vị hãy đến hội chợ Tết để cùng chung vui với gia đình và bạn bè xa gần,

hầu mang lại nhiều sắc thái đón Xuân Giáp Thìn đây đủ và nhiều may măn.

The Dragon Lord of Laïc

Sử tích Lạc Lông Quân

he story of Lạc Long Quân, the “Dragon Lord of Lạc,” resides somewhere between history and mythology.

Thought to have been born into royalty during the Hồng Bàng Dynasty (~3000 B.C.E), Lạc Long

TQuân became a champion of the ancient Văn Lang people and father to the forerunners of modern-day

Vietnamese.

Powerful, clever, and crafty, Lạc Long Quân’s benevolence and bravery were best exhibited in the aid he provided.

Two oppressive and terrible creatures, a giant fish spirit, Ngư Tinh, and fox monster, Hồ Tinh, once terrorized

the Văn Lang. Yet, Lạc Long Quân outsmarted and slayed them, ushering in centuries of sustained

peace.

Lạc Long Quân, however, is best known for his part in the Vietnamese creation myth. He married Âu Cơ, an

immortal mountain snow goddess, who bore a sac that carried 100 eggs. These eggs hatched into 100 boys,

the first generation of Vietnamese. The myth also symbolizes the merger of two Vietnamese tribes, Lạc and

Âu and the 100 Vietnamese tribes, some of whom still reside in China.

Their marriage was brief. One day, Lạc Long Quân told Âu Cơ that as a dragon, he must leave to return to the

sea. He said dragons and goddesses are as ill-suited as water and fire. An agreement was struck: Lạc Long

Quân would take 50 boys to the lowland South, and Âu Cơ would return to the mountainous North with the

rest, thus explaining through myth why present-day Vietnamese reside in the mountains and sea.The legend

of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ is a tale of love, courage, and origin. But it is also a story of unity. It reminds

present-day Vietnamese and Vietnamese-Americans that we are descended from goodness, eternally bound

to one another and our forebears.

âu chuyện về Lạc Long Quân nằm ở đâu đó giữa lịch sử và thần

thoại. Sinh ra trong hoàng tộc vào thời Hồng Bàng (khoảng chừng

C3000 năm trước Công Nguyên), Lạc Long Quân trở thành người anh

hùng của nước Văn Lang và cũng là tổ tiên của Việt Nam bây giờ.

Mạnh mẽ, thông minh và xảo quyệt, lòng nhân từ và lòng dũng cảm của

Lạc Long Quân được thể hiện rõ nhất qua sử tích Ngư Tinh và Hồ Tinh, một

con cá khổng lồ và một con cáo quái vật đã làm khủng bố ở Văn Lang. Tuy

nhiên, Lạc Long Quân đã dùng sự thông minh trí tuệ của mình để tiêu diệt

họ, mở ra nền hòa bình vững bền trong nhiều thế kỷ.

Nhưng nói về Lạc Long Quân thì phải nhắc tới truyền thuyết “Con Rồng

Cháu Tiên.” Ông đã kết hôn với Âu Cơ, một nữ thần tuyết trên núi bất tử,

và sinh ra 100 quả trứng. Những quả trứng này nở ra 100 bé trai, thế hệ

đầu tiên của người Việt Nam. Sử tích cho là tượng trưng cho sự kết hợp

của hai bộ tộc Lạc và Âu, và cũng nói về 100 bộ tộc Việt, một số vẫn còn

cư trú tại Trung Hoa.

Cuộc hôn nhân của họ rất ngắn ngủi. Một ngày nọ, Lạc Long Quân nói với

Âu Cơ rằng đã là phận rồng thì phải ra đi để trở về biển cả. Ông nói rồng

và tiên khó ở lâu với nhau được. Vì vậy Lạc Long Quân đem 50 đứa con

xuống biển phía Nam, và Âu Cơ đem 50 người con còn lại trở về miền núi

phía Bắc, từ đó giải thích qua huyền thoại tại sao người Việt ngày nay lại cư

trú ở núi và biển.

Truyền thuyết Lạc Long Quân và Âu Cơ là câu chuyện về tình yêu, lòng

dũng cảm và cội nguồn. Nhưng đó cũng là câu chuyện về sự đoàn kết,

nhắc nhở người Việt Nam rằng chúng ta là “Con Rồng Cháu Tiên,” vĩnh viễn

đoàn kết với nhau và với tổ tiên của chúng ta.
