THE FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN 

The vibrant collection of artworks painted by the Florida Highwaymen provides a 

unique look into Florida’s scenery and history. The Florida Highwaymen were a group 

of 26 African American painters in the 1950s whose art was sold by going door-to-door 

to businesses and families across Florida. At the time, black artists were excluded from 

traditional galleries, leading the Highwaymen to come together to find new ways to 

make a living. They often sold their work directly from the trunks of their cars- earning 

them their name. Along the way, they captured Florida’s unique landscape, and today 

their work stands to memorialize the artistry and Florida’s natural beauty. 

THE GROVE MUSEUM 

The Grove Museum is a must-see historical site in Tallahassee. Built-in the 1830s by 

enslaved African Americans, the Grove Museum is one of the best-preserved antebellum 

residences in Florida. As the home to several generations of the affluent Call and Collins 

families, The Grove was sold to the state of Florida in 1985 by Governor LeRoy Collins 

and his wife, Mary Call Collins, under the promise that the home become a museum to 

preserve the State’s history for years to come. 

TALLAHASSEE: A CULTURAL CANVAS 

The City of Tallahassee is Florida’s Capital City, but its history goes much further back 

than the state’s founding in 1845. As far back as 1500, the town was the capital of the 

Apalachee Native Americans. The town was first visited by Spanish explorer Hernando 

De Soto in 1539, who established a Spanish Franciscan mission there a century later. 

Over the years, the town was influenced by Spanish settlers, Native Americans, and of 

course, our emerging American nation. The town later became a chief settlement in the 

new territory of Florida and was eventually declared the capital city. There is so much 

to learn about Tallahassee’s rich history and the various people who have called it home 

over the centuries. 

WARRIOR FOR JUSTICE 

Tallahassee is at the seat of the Civil Rights Movement and Black culture today. It 

hosts a legacy of heroic figures who have made strides to demand equal rights. Here is 

a look at one of Tallahassee’s most elite leaders and changemakers, whose impact on 

history has sculpted the future of Tallahassee – and the nation. Celebrate his legacy by 

visiting his favorite attractions and historic monuments associated with Black culture 

and getting involved in educational programs and special events that celebrate Black 

History during the month of February and every day year-round. 

JOHN G. RILEY HOUSE & MUSEUM 

Built-in 1890 by John G. Riley, a local educator and civic leader, the home is the last 

visible evidence of Smokey Hollow, an African American community that once thrived in 

downtown Tallahassee. Exhibits feature historical artwork and photographs.
