Big projects set
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
The city of Groveport’s 2024 budget includes several significant
capital improvement projects.
These include:
•$600,000 for street maintenance.
“This year’s street maintenance program will consist of doing
portions/sections of multiple streets,” said Groveport City
Administrator B. J. King.
The following streets will have sections repaved: Golden Grove
Court, Felicity Court, Scout Court, Bixford Avenue, Peach
Canyon, Landmark Road, Tallman Street, Private Alley
(Blacklick Street to Buckeye Alley), and Maple Street (from
Private Alley to Walnut Street — this will also include replacement
of the deteriorated storm drainage pipes).
“The sections of these roads have been chosen due to deteriorated
pavement conditions,” said King. “We anticipate having the
program advertised for bids by the end of February. We are currently
working with our engineering consultant to design the
plans and prepare bid documents.”
•$1 million for pickleball courts. Currently there are six pickleball
courts sharing space with three tennis courts in Degenhart
Park. The courts in Degenhart Park will remain as combination
tennis and pickleball courts. King noted there is a growing
demand for pickleball courts as the sport gains popularity. He
said the new pickleball courts would be for pickleball only and
would be located in the southeast part of Groveport Park near the
baseball field.
•The 2024 budget also includes $500,000 for “improvements”
to KidSpace (a 3,100 square foot building located at 630 Wirt
Road) and $920,000 for public parking lot reconstruction and
design.
“As for KidSpace and the parking lot reconfiguration, no determination
has been made yet. We are still working on the best
option for both,” said King.
Other projects for 2024 include: $30,000 for sidewalk replacements;
$55,000 for street maintenance and stormwater: $110,000
for Groveport Park pedestrian path maintenance; $750,000 recreation
center HVAC replacement; $250,000 for golf carts; $200,000
for Maple Street improvements; $132,000 for Port Road reconstruction,
Phase 2; $189,900 for new police communication radios;
$20,000 for Wirt Road and Main Street study improvements; and
$278,000 Elmont Place sewer force main Phase 3A.
Cruisers making a splash!
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
The Cruisers are making a splash!
Did you know the Groveport Madison High School
swim team has been around for several years and
has even produced state champions in the past?
There are 10 swimmers this year’s team - four
boys and six girls - and they are coached by Rachel
Owens and Ilana Webber. Webber has been a coach
since the team started in 2016. The team competes in
the Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye Division.
“Because we are a small team compared to our
competitors, we don’t win very many meets, but overall
our swimmers are setting personal records at
each meet,” said Owens. “We have a great group of
kids who work really hard and support each other in
both practices and meets.”
The team partners with the Groveport Recreation
Center for the use of its indoor pool.
“We have had an amazing partnership with the
Groveport Rec Center,” said Owens. “We practice
there for two hours after school Monday-Friday. We
hosted Grove City for a home meet at the rec center
in December and we most recently hosted Canal
Winchester, Hamilton Township, and Liberty Union
for our Senior Night meet on Jan. 19. This year, we
had 11 regular season meets all over Central Ohio,
including the A.J. Glover Invitational at Kenyon
College and the Athens Invitational at Ohio
University. Our varsity athletes swam in OCC’s on
Jan. 28 at Kenyon College and OHSAA Sectionals on
Feb. 10.”
Owens said two of the team’s top swimmers are
freshmen Taze Owens and Collin Hart.
“They have brought a new level of competition
that the team hasn’t seen in several years,” said
Owens. “Taze specializes in the sprint freestyle and
breaststroke events and Collin specializes in the fly
and backstroke events. Taze and Collin both swim on
a club team and swim for the Groveport Fighting
Fish in the summer. They make great training partners
and are leaders on the team, as they show up
and work hard in practice every single day, even putting
in extra practices with their club team on the
weekends.”
Owens said the officially sanctioned swim team
started in 2016, but Cruiser swimmers have competed
for several years before that.
“I represented Groveport Madison as the only
swimmer in the late 1990s while I swam with my
club team,” said Owens. “A few years later, state
champion sisters Jenny and Heather Bradford represented
It’s time for the Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir’s annual show
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
A musical “British Invasion” is coming to
Groveport.
The Groveport Madison Area Community Choir’s
(GMACC) next production, “The British Are Coming:
A Musical Variety Show,” will be held at 1 p.m. and
7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at Groveport Madison High School,
4475 S. Hamilton Road.
According to GMACC Director Terri Christensen,
“Every year we try to make the show different and
this year was no exception. The British Invasion (of
the 1960s) had a huge impact on music around the
world and we wanted to bring that to the stage.”
She said the GMACC members will perform lots
of Beatles music as well as songs by Elton John, The
Hollies, The Rolling Stones and Queen.
“We will feature artists from Wales, Scotland,
Ireland, Canada and Australia,” said Christensen.
“The show will also have a scene with folk songs
including, ‘Danny Boy.’”
Highlights of the show this year will be the many
special costumes and set pieces.
“This year our set pieces are being built by the
construction trades class at Groveport Madison High
School and their instructor Chad Gibbs,” said
Christensen. “It’s a great learning experience for the
kids and helps us out tremendously. Our finale will
be, ‘He Ain't Heavy He’s My Brother,’ which should
be a big number! It’s going to be amazing!”
Other highlights include appearances from such
British characters as Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson,
Mary Poppins, and more.
Plus, the entire evening involves a chase to find
the elusive “Waldo,” from the cartoon “Where’s
Waldo” which originated in England
The GMACC has grown over the years and now
has 78 adults members in the choir and 14 kids, who
come from all over central Ohio.
“There are also countless volunteers that help out
backstage and behind the scenes.,” said Christensen.
“It takes over 125 to pull everything together and
bring it to the stage and all of our help and members
are volunteers, from the director right down to the
guy that pulls the curtains. We have folks from
Groveport, Canal Winchester, Reynoldsburg,
Circleville, Gahanna, and Delaware and more. Over
25 of our members are graduates of Groveport
Madison High School and I think they just love giving
back to this community.”
Christensen said she hopes the GMACC has a
positive influence in the community.
“It was my hope, when starting this, that it would
bring people together and raise money for local charities,”
said Christensen. “It has gone so far beyond
that and in my wildest dreams I never imagined the
impact it would have on our members and our community.
We are a family - pure and simple. We love
each other, pray for each other, care for each other
and the list goes on. And we do it all to bring hope
and help to the community we love.”
The 1 p.m. show is sold out, but there are still
tickets available for the 7 p.m. show.
In person ticket sales will be offered at the
Groveport Zion Lutheran Church (6014 Groveport
Road - enter in the rear office door) from 9 a.m. to
noon from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2. Order tickets online at
GMACC.Booktix.net. Reserved seats are $20 and
general admission seats are $15 each. There is a
small convenience fee added for online orders ($1.75
and $1.50, respectively). Credit cards can also be
accepted for in-person sales. All patrons must have a
valid ticket for entry. For information visit
and Heather won the state championship
in the 100 butterfly. Both girls went on to
swim at the University of Kentucky.”
Owens said the future of the Cruiser
swim team is bright.
“We have a young program consisting of
mostly freshmen and sophomores,” said
Owens. “The partnership with the city of
Groveport and the Groveport Recreation
Center has been an incredible support to
our program. We are looking to continue to
build our program, hoping to add another
10 swimmers next year. Swimming is a
great sport to stay in shape during the offseason
of other sports, like football, crosscountry,
and track. We are hoping to
encourage multi-sport athletes to join the
swim team next year.”
Owens said swimming is not only great
exercise, but also an important life skill.
“We do not have any requirements to
join the high school swim team,” said
Owens. “We will teach anyone who wants
to learn. Swimming is for all ability levels.
It is a great sport that teaches self-motivation
and personal goal-setting. While we
are a team, each swimmer is competing
against themselves to achieve personal
best times.”
2024 Select Housing
Committee Insights
Dear Neighbor,
As the Chair of the first Senate Select Committee
on Housing, I’ve traveled across our
great state and engaged with Ohioans from
all walks of life to take a deep dive into the
housing crisis and gain a better understanding
of the challenges people face on a personal
level. The committee’s collective
efforts are geared towards unraveling the
complexities and paving the way for more
Ohioans to attain available, accessible and
affordable housing. Recently, the committee
convened in Cleveland, where we had the
invaluable opportunity to listen to the concerns
of local elected officials, housing advocates,
community stakeholders, and
residents regarding the current state of
housing in Northeast Ohio.
I am excited to announce that our next hearing
is scheduled for January 31, 2024 at the
Ohio Statehouse, where all local elected officials
are invited to testify. Please subscribe
for updates to stay informed about the
meeting's specifics, including location and
time. Your participation is crucial as we embark
on this journey together.
Looking ahead, we are consolidating the
feedback gathered from our statewide hearings
into a comprehensive report slated for
completion this spring. This report will serve
as the foundation for our recommendations
and actionable steps in 2024. I extend my
heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has
played a role in helping my colleagues and I
comprehend the gravity of the present
housing crisis. In this collaborative effort, we
are partners, and I am unwaveringly committed
to safeguarding your path to prosperity
by ensuring that your voices resonate
in the decision-making process.
It’s winter, so I thought it would be cool to write about ice.
I can recall from
Editor’s Notebook
Rick
Palsgrove
the days of my youth
when older adults
referred to the electric
refrigerator as the “ice
box.” This was a carryover reference from
their own youths when refrigerators did not
exist and people had an actual ice box in
their homes to keep perishable food cool and
fresh.
Ice boxes were popular in the 19th century
and the early 20th century and were usually
wooden boxes with a tin or zinc lining
insulated with sawdust or straw. A big block
of ice was placed in a compartment of the ice
box to keep the interior of the box cool for a
short amount of time. People bought blocks
of ice, weighing between 25 to 100 pounds,
which were delivered by the “ice man” via
horse drawn wagons, and later by trucks, to
households on a regular basis, often daily because the ice melted
fairly quickly.
Ice was harvested naturally from frozen ponds in the winter. In
Canal Winchester and Groveport ice blocks were also cut from the
frozen Ohio and Erie Canal. The harvested ice was kept cool and
stored in insulated ice houses often covered with straw or sawdust
to insulate it.
The Groveport Ice Plant was located at the rear of the
Groveport Creamery on the northeast corner of Blacklick and
Church streets. Ice was usually delivered daily from the ice plant
to homes. Customers placed order cards on their doors or windows
stating how many pounds of ice they needed. The ice man would
then cut the necessary amount from a large block of ice, carry it
into the house using large tongs, and place it in the ice box.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, as the story goes,
some kids in Groveport would distract the ice delivery man while
other kids broke off pieces of ice from the back of the ice truck. The
kids would then sell the small chunks of ice to street laborers or
other workers in town for a penny a piece on hot summer days.
While the use of ice boxes and ice delivery was common in town,
it was a different story on rural farms.
According to Metro Parks Slate Run Living Historical Farm
Program Manager Ann Culek, “In the time period we portray
(Ohio in the 1880s) at the farm there is little evidence that anyone
used an icebox at the time, as there was no place with water. Our
pond was not here then, but was added by Metro Parks. In looking
at probate inventories of the time we did find people who lived
closer to streams having ice saws. I do believe there were a few ice
houses along Walnut Creek Pike.”
She said farmers could cut and harvest ice if they lived close to
a body of water.
“There was no ice delivery from the ice man this far out in the
countryside, said Culek. “We have seen, but cannot document
(because my memory is hazy), farmers in the 1880s may have purchased
ice from a store closer to town, perhaps for ice cream.”
She said, to keep perishable foods cool, the farmers most likely
used a root cellar or a spring house.
Culek related a personal experience involving ice harvesting
she and her husband had when they lived in Maine and worked at
an 1870s farm museum.
“We cut ice there regularly,” said Culek. “An incident happened
one day when we were cutting ice as one of our team of oxen wandered
onto a recently cut and refrozen section and fell in. Imagine
one ox up on the ice while the other ox, still yoked together, was
in the water. It was quite the ice rescue. One person jumped in to
put a rope on the ox and my husband fetched a team of horses to
pull the ox out of the pond. One staff member ended up afterward
in a hot bathtub with a stiff slug of scotch. The cold, wet ox ended
up in the 1870s era woodstove heated kitchen to warm up. The
floors needed a good cleanup at the end of the day. The ox also
backed into one of the kitchen windows and busted it out. Every
Men cutting and harvesting ice on the Ohio and Erie Canal in
Groveport in the early 20th century.
time we saw that broken and mended wooden window sash it
reminded us of the ox and the ice incident. All survived and now
we have a story to tell. Sometimes ice cutting and doing living history
can be really interesting.”
Ice boxes remained in common use in homes until the advent of
the electric refrigerator in the 20th century. While there were electric
refrigerators in the early 1900s, it wasn’t until the 1920s and
1930s that refrigerator technology improved and they became
more affordable and therefore more common in homes.
Some ice boxes remained in use until World War II, but by the
1950s they mostly melted away into history.
Township fire inspector retires after 37 years
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Madison Township Fire Inspector Jeff
Fasone is hanging up his hat–somewhat–
after retiring from full time service that
started with the township fire department
in 1987.
Fasone, who said he still plans to help
out on a part time basis, was promoted to
lieutenant in 1994, interim chief in 2018,
and joined the fire bureau in 2019.
Madison Township Fire Chief Derek
Robinson told the Madison Township
trustees at their Jan. 23 meeting that
Fasone was the last person to serve in the
township’s dispatch office.
“You have been instrumental in the
transition for me,” Robinson said before
presenting Fasone a flag that flew over all
township firehouses.
Other Madison Township news
•Robinson reported the department
responded to 10,721 calls for service in
FASONE
2023. Over 8,500 were
EMS related and 2200
were fire related. The
statistics reflect
responses with mutual
and automatic aide
partners as well.
•According to
Madison Township
Police Chief Gary
York, his officers
responded to 35,753 calls for service including
2,474 traffic stops and made 63 OMVI
arrests.
“All of our officers did a great job,” said
York. “They’re very active out there.”
•York asked the trustees for approval
for a letter indicating the township’s intent
to purchase two 2025 Ford police cruisers
this year. He said the manufacturer still
needs to fulfill 2024 product orders before
starting on 2025 orders. He has used the
same process for the last two years as vehicles
become harder to obtain.
“It puts us in line,” said York, who also
announced the department received a partial
$32,615 award for body-worn cameras.
“That is not the full amount, but it is better
than nothing. It’s great news.”
•A free women’s self-defense class will
be held on March 23, 9 a.m. to noon, at the
community center, 4575 Madison Lane.
The class is limited to 30 participants who
can register online at policeadmin@madisontownship.org
or call 614-836-5355
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
•In 2023, 355 nuisance properties were
identified with violation tags, which resulted
in 129 township issued nuisance letters.
There were 61 assessments on 34 properties
totaling over $30,628.
“The tags are definitely working,” said
Madison Township Administrator Susan
Brobst.
•The township’s electric and gas aggregation
programs end this year in the
spring. Brobst said rates are lower because
of the weather and suggested the board
might consider securing pricing at the
February meeting.
Board members agreed with the administrator
to continue offering budget billing
and waive fees for residents joining or exiting
the program.
“That has, in the past, eliminated some
suppliers,” said Brobst, who said she will
share information and updates with the
Groveport and Canal Winchester councils.
•There is a new county zoning inspector
assigned to the township and the administrator
said she is looking forward to working
with the inspector on several long-time
issues. Residents with violations can
expect little tolerance for non-compliance.
Cases sent to the prosecutor are moving
through the system much faster, with
fewer cases being continued.
“It’s been too complacent for too long,”
said Brobst. “Residents in the past have
been very non-chalant and that’s going to
change. There’s going to be some complaining.”
Hockey players prowl the ice for 100 points
By Theresa Garee
Staff Writer
The Prowler Hockey Association
Hockey team recently celebrated nine
players at their senior night.
One senior, Heath Scofield, has a goal
of reaching 100 career points before the
end of the season.
The Prowler Hockey Club is a high
school club hockey team participating in
the Ohio Scholastic Hockey League -
OHSL (formerly the Greater Columbus
High School Club Hockey League - GCH-
SCHL).
Currently, the Prowlers’ territory consists
of students who reside in the following
school districts: Amanda-Clearcreek,
Bloom-Carroll, Canal Winchester,
Groveport Madison, Madison Christian,
Hamilton Township, Liberty Union-
Thurston, Logan Elm, Pickerington,
South-Western and Teays Valley.
The teams currently playing in the
OSHL for the upcoming season consist of
Athens, Columbus Ice Hockey Club,
Dayton, Hilliard, Miami, Newark,
Northeast Storm, PHA and Westerville.
Scofield, a forward, asked to play hockey
at age three. His goal to reach 100
career points began at the start of his high
school hockey career in 2020.
This season Scofield has fought through
a medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain
which slowed his progress toward his
goals,
“Personally, I am aiming for 100 points,
200 hits, and 700 shots on goal, however a
MCL strain incurred on Jan. 6 has shortened
the number of games to accomplish
that to 11 (10 JV games + 1 Varsity
game),” said Scofield.
Scofield is not alone in this goal as
Jarret DiPietro, a junior from Groveport
Madison, also plays forward for the
Prowlers and is working to reach 100
points.
DiPietro has played for a variety of
hockey leagues both in Ohio and out of
state. He began playing hockey at age
eight. He has played with the Prowlers
since moving to Ohio in 2021.
DiPietro plans to reach 100 points at
the end of this season stating, “It’s important
to me because I want to leave my
name in PHA history and I want to break
records.”
He added, however, that points don’t
define one as a player.
The Prowlers have both a junior varsity
and varsity team that both Scofield and
DiPietro play on, depending on need.
February 11, 2024 - GROVEPORT MESSENGER - PAGE 7
A film with layers of beauty, charm, and eccentricities
In 2014, author and illustrator Emma
Yarlett released her second children’s picture
book, “Orion and the Dark.” A quick
skim over the summary on the back would
lead you to believe that it was the standard
fare of the genre: it centers around a little
boy who is scared of the dark, which then
comes to life and shows him the wonders of
the night, thus teaching him how to overcome
his fears.
Opening the pages of the book quickly
dispel any notion that it was the standard
fare as the content is so immersive.
Employing the use of mixed media artwork,
Yarlett takes the reader into the
mind of the anxiety-ridden protagonist
where every corner, every glance, every
interaction is a threat to his very existence.
For a book that is geared toward children
— the younger ages, in particular —
“Orion and the Dark” is off-beat and trippy,
which could be why it did not make a big
splash upon its initial release here in the
states. It did, however, garner the interest
from the entertainment industry who saw
the potential of the material.
Around two years ago, DreamWorks
Animation announced it was collaborating
with Netflix to adapt and distribute the
film version of “Orion and the Dark.” In an
effort to bring the beautiful bizarreness of
the book to the big screen — and also in an
effort to make it stand out from the crowd
— the studios hired Charlie Kaufman
(“Adaptation,” “Being John Malkovich,”
and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind”) to pen the script.
The idea of Kaufman writing a movie for
children may sound absurd, but “Orion and
the Dark” proves his signature brand of
existential dread and off-kilter humor
works perfectly for a story about a child
learning to face their fears. Kaufman tones
down some of his trademark weirdness to
make the movie accessible to children, but
he retains the complexity, nervousness,
self-awareness, and vulnerability that his
work is known for. The result is a bizarre,
beautiful, and humorous
that works at every
level — and for every
age.
In the book on which
the movie is based, the
titular character is a
young child around
the age of 6 or 7. To
make his character a
bit more relatable to
the viewing audience,
he raised the age up to 11 — right around
the time when puberty is about to hit.
While blissfully unaware of that impending
stage of his life, Orion (voiced by Jacob
Tremblay) has other horrors to occupy his
mind such as bees, dogs, falling from skyscrapers,
talking to his crush, using the toilet
at school, being called on in the classroom,
and sewers which may harbor killer
clowns. These are a few of the things that
run through his mind during the day. At
night, much scarier thoughts lay waiting.
Every night before he goes to bed, he
curses the inky blackness that engulfs his
room and the sky outside his window. One
evening, his anxiety over the usual turning
of the day gets so bad that the personification
of darkness (aptly called Dark and
voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) appears to
him and swears he’ll help Orion get over
his fear so he can be at peace when the
night falls.
Dark’s grand plan includes introducing
him to the other nighttime deities: Dreams
(Angela Bassett), Insomnia (Nat Faxon),
Sleep (Natasia Demetriou), Quiet (Aparna
Nancherla) and Unexplained Noises (Golda
Rosheuvel). All of these characters have
fun, individualistic designs that really
hammer home their natures and purpose.
For instance, Insomnia is a mosquito-like
creature that whispers sweet terrors in
Unexplained Noises is a creepy robot-like
creature that likes to find objects to bang
together to give would-be sleepers a little
scare. None of them are included in the
book — Kaufman and director Sean
Charmatz had to stretch a 40-page book
into a feature-length film somehow — but
they fit the wonderfully odd and vibrant
style of Yarlett’s.
Orion is not at all excited about spending
more time with beings that scare him
silly. Likewise, the nighttime deities are
not at all excited about his presence as they
believe his fear could upset the balance of
existence itself. They have good reason to
believe that as his anxieties and phobias
start to eat away at the group’s eternal
friendship, the confidence they have in
themselves, and the steadfast trust they
have in their (apparent) fearless leader,
Dark.
The movie starts off following the path
of a straightforward fairy tale about entities
that help humans cope with life’s perils
— until it doesn’t. About a quarter of the
way through, Kaufman flips the script and
introduces a new framing device that is
similar to that of “The Princess Bride.” The
viewer learns that “Orion and the Dark” is
being told by an older Orion (Colin Hanks)
to his daughter Hypatia (Mia Akemi
Brown) who is trying to face her fears. It’s
a cute twist that works, especially when we
learn that the grown-up Orion still harbors
doubts and fears of his own.
If there is a flaw to this movie, it is that
it spends a bit too much time with young
Orion, especially when it seems he has
solved his problems about halfway through
the story. In order to raise the stakes and
fill time, Kaufman and the team introduces
a new and contrived hiccup that almost
grinds the movie and the character development
that has taken place to a halt. But
thankfully, the ship is righted as adult
Orion and his young daughter work together
to bring the film and the story within a
story back to its fullest potential.
I do not often get to see many animated
features throughout the year so I cannot
say if the art direction and design is wholly
original from the other animated features
out there today. But there is a funny and
warm center to “Orion and the Dark” with
layers of beauty, charm and eccentricities
wrapped around it. It might not be for
everyone, but it is definitely relatable to
individuals of all ages and worthy of a
watch.
Grade: B+
“Orion and the Dark” is now streaming on
Netflix.
Ebright Road problem
I live on Ebright Road at the 90 degree
bend. I read the Messenger story,
“Crashes at Bixby and Ebright” regarding
the accidents that take place at the intersection
of Bixby and Ebright roads.
I have been trying to get help to get a
guard rail put up or something to protect
my property for people who come straight
down Ebright Road and do not make the
turn and end up in my front yard.
I have photos to show where a car has
come completely straight down and flipped
over in my front yard. The engineer has
put a flashing sign that states how fast
you’re going right before you approach the
bend, but it has not been working for two
weeks now. We have cars that do not take
that bend slow enough. In the summer
they think it is a drag strip once they
round the bend. We have had drunks and
people high on drugs end up in our yard
damaging my property, breaking my
fence, and then there’s times where they
have come off and driven into our yard and
destroyed our yard, mailbox, and fence
and drove off and we are left to pick up the
pieces and fix it out of our own pocket.
I appreciate any help that can be given
by adding the problem at the sharp
Ebright Road curve to any solutions found
for the Ebright Road/Bixby Road intersection
so that we can all get some help.
