feature — 2 The Parish Magazine - March 2024 17 Marie Curie's 'Great Daffodil Appeal' supports thousands of nursing shifts to comfort end of life Marie Curie Kollidas, dreamstime.com Everyone deserves expert care and support at the end of life and that’s why Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity is seeking support for its Great Daffodil Appeal this March by asking for volunteers to give a few hours of their time to distribute the iconic daffodil pins in exchange for a donation. The Marie Curie International Memorial was formally established on 6 July 1948 in memory of the life and scientific work of Marie Curie. She was a pioneering scientist known for her work on radioactivity, as well as her dedication to providing care to those with cancer. Shortly afterwards, The Marie Curie International Memorial became the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation which has grown into the charity that is now best known as Marie Curie. The charity stresses that it is not a 'cancer charity' but the UK’s leading ‘end of life charity’. It cares for people with any illness they are likely to die from including Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, heart, liver, kidney and lung disease, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, and advanced cancer. The Marie Curie charity says that one in four people don’t get the end of life care they need. Its Great Daffodil Appeal encourages people to donate and wear a daffodil pin to help them continue to support people with any illness they’re likely to die from. The appeal is the charity’s main fund raising effort each year to help fund Marie Curie Nurses and healthcare professionals to provide expert support and hospice care. The daffodil, a symbol of renewal and hope, was chosen to represent the campaign’s message of support and care for individuals with terminal illnesses. It is dependent on public donations and last year supporters helped Marie Curie provide direct care to more than 44,200 people in the UK via its nine hospices and through overnight nursing care in people’s own homes. The money raised also funds the charity’s free support line and webchat, which is available to anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, and for those close to them. The support line provides practical and emotional support on everything from symptom management and day-to-day care to financial information and bereavement support. The Great Daffodil Appeal is supported by Superdrug Stores plc the well-known health and beauty retailer in the United Kingdom that is the second largest chain behind Boots. Since 2013, Superdrug and sister company Savers, have raised over £11 million for Marie Curie. This has helped fund thousands of nursing shifts, so people at the end of life can feel comforted and cared for right to the end. You can pick up a daffodil pin in any of Superdrug's 800 stores during March as well as from volunteers who undertake house-to-house collections.
