How you can stay ahead of diabetes 

With diabetes on the rise, getting 

tested and establishing a 

healthy routine are more important 

than ever. 

We’re facing a diabetes crisis in 

the United States. About 1 in 10 of 

us - nearly 37 million people - are 

living with diabetes, and another 

96 million have prediabetes.[1] 

What’s more, 1 in 5 Americans 

with diabetes don’t know they 

have it.[2] 

The high rate of diabetes in 

this country comes at a significant 

cost. If not well managed, diabetes 

can lead to many complications, 

including blindness, kidney failure, 

heart disease and more.[3] 

Diabetes also increases the risk of 

developing serious complications 

or being hospitalized with respiratory 

illnesses such as COVID-19 

and the flu.[4],[5] People living 

with diabetes incur an average of 

$16,750 in medical expenses every 

year - more than double the typical 

cost of care for people without diabetes.[6] 

Although these statistics can be 

daunting, the good news is there 

are many steps you can take to prevent 

or delay the onset of diabetes 

and avert the worst complications. 

And the first step is as simple as 

visiting your local Walgreens. 

Diabetes Care at Walgreens 

During Diabetes Awareness 

Month, Walgreens and its partners 

are offering free diabetes 

testing and complimentary education 

to help people know where 

they stand and take action to 

manage their condition. Head to 

participating locations throughout 

November to get a free A1C 

or blood glucose test. You can 

also tune into a virtual diabetes 

education session hosted by 

Village Medical Primary Care at 

Walgreens and receive complimentary 

education materials.

Beyond Diabetes Awareness 

Month, pharmacists are a yearround 

resource for people living 

with or at risk of diabetes. Thousands 

of Walgreens pharmacists 

have undergone specialized diabetes 

training and can answer your 

questions and help you overcome 

hurdles in getting the care you 

need. 

“While navigating diabetes can 

be complicated, the most important 

things you need to do are get 

tested regularly and develop a 

routine to manage your condition 

over time,” says Danielle James, 

PharmD, a Walgreens pharmacy 

manager in the Chicago area. 

“Your pharmacist can help you 

with both of those things, whether 

you have diabetes, prediabetes or 

an elevated risk for diabetes. This 

is the perfect time to start that conversation 

with your pharmacist.” 

Testing and ongoing management 

look different for everyone, 

but they are both crucial to stay 

ahead of diabetes before it progresses 

or leads to complications. 

Here are the basics: 

Testing 

The American Diabetes Association 

recommends all adults ages 

35 and older get screened for diabetes 

at least once every three 

years.[7] People living with diabetes 

also need to undergo regular 

testing to monitor their condition 

and adjust their care regimen as 

needed. 

Blood sugar tests are the most 

common form of testing for diabetes, 

and there are several different 

types: 

• A1C testing measures your average 

blood sugar level over three 

months. This is the most common 

test to diagnose diabetes and monitor 

it over time to determine how 

well treatment is working.

Play ball! Overcome life’s strikes and make a home run

Can you believe it’s already Spring 

Training time for Major League Baseball? 

I’m a fan. I enjoy watching and cheering 

for my favorite team. But have you ever 

really WATCHED the game and thought 

about how it relates to life? 

I will explain a few things I found in 

baseball-related to our lives with Christ. 

First, I found the umpire is like God. 

He’s always watching to see what life 

throws at us and how we respond by batting 

it back. Do we hit a home run, a base 

hit or a strikeout? If we hit a home run, we 

score a “win” in our life. If we get a base hit, 

we still are in the run to get home. Getting 

home (heaven) is what we all strive for. 

But do we give up or return to bat and 

try again if we strike out? If we give up, 

then Satan wins. We have only three 

strikes before we are out in baseball — 

but with God, we can return to bat and try 

again, even after the third strike. 

Aren’t you glad God gives us that 

chance to go to bat repeatedly? He doesn’t 

want us to strike out, so he gives us many 

chances to get on base and finally get 

home. He doesn’t care if you try several 

times, just as long as you try. Don’t feel 

like a strikeout is the end. Pick yourself 

up, return to bat and try again for a base 

hit or a home run. 

Life is our baseball field. It constantly 

changes depending on what is thrown 

at us, but we must keep batting at it and 

score a win. Don’t give up just because 

you failed a few times. God doesn’t give 

up on us but is ready to forgive our strikeout 

and let us keep batting until we get on 

base and run the field to get our home run 

(heaven).

We spend our life either at bat or running 

the bases. In baseball, it’s three 

strikes, and you are out. But with God, 

there is no strike out — unless you give 

up, don’t repent for your “strikes,” and 

wind up at the end of your life unrepentant 

and striking out. 

God never gives up on us, but we 

sometimes give up on him, throwing in 

the towel and letting Satan win the game 

of our life. 

As long as we get on each base, we are 

headed for heaven and win the game of 

life. Every time we get on base, we get 

closer to home. All we need to do is stay 

focused and watch what will be thrown 

at us next. 

Sometimes we are even able to beat the 

odds and steal a base. That’s when we are 

focused on God and not on what is happening 

around us. We need to focus on 

the goal of heaven and not be distracted 

by things we have no control over.

as can be, likes cars rides, knows his name, loves 

to sleep and cuddle, is learning basic commands, 

loves peanut butter, and is also learning to use 

the potty outside. He’s a snuggle bug who is very 

friendly and likes to play outside or hang out on 

the sofa with you! Little Crush has also learned 

his nickname given by his foster mom, “Chunk!” 

Something to note: Crush can be protective of his 

food around smaller dogs but not people or larger 

dogs. Therefore, we recommend a home with no 

small animals or encourage feeding separately 

from smaller dogs. This is a simple fix and will 

just take a patient owner to work with him on!
